good morning, everybody. it's tuesday, may 26th. good morning, reggie. >> good morning, kumasi. so was it pretty warm at your place yesterday? >> it was bearable. i left the window open and felt pretty good. how about you? >> yeah, it's pretty good. it's always pretty good in the beginning, but as mike knows as the days goes on it starts to build and i have a feeling by the end of the week things are going to be pretty steamy. >> that's a great explanation, reggie. yeah, the first day of the heat, the air-conditioner doesn't run much, but day two the whole house has been warmed up and it will be tougher to keep it cool, and the heat danger will rise as we head to wednesday and thursday. we have the oranges under the heat advisory. and the air quality has changed for the worst. and the north bay has been added

to the list of having poor air quality. here's a look from sutro tower. our day planner, 52 to 66. i think we will see faster warmer than yesterday. we have a small raw rein layer there at the coast while the rest of us will hit low 90s to 100s this afternoon. let's get back to kumasi with the news. or we'll go to reggie. governor newsom says the counties can now allow in-store retail shopping, however just because they can it doesn't necessarily mean they will, especially in counties like the ones we live in. the economy is a big focus for us here at abc7 and the effort to build a better bay >> reporter: however, we are going to be still window

shopping, still curbside pickup for now, and we are not allowed to go into the stores quite yet. gavin newsom did clear the way for the state to have in-store shopping but the bay area counties have not said when we will be allowed to do that. in the bay area, we have been behind in every phase of the reopening process, taking a slower and more cautious approach. the governor says this new phase is being allowed to happen because california continues to flatten the curve. he is encouraging everybody to keep up the good work of social distancing, staying home and wearing masks. he says the precautions are going to be especially important as we start to reopen california. we will be looking to our local county health officers to find out when this will be happening here locally. we will keep you posted on that, of course, as soon as we get

word. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. let's talk about the churches in our state. there are new guidelines about how they could reopen. it's up to local counties, once again, to decide whether or not to allow them to return to in-person services. masks are strongly recommended. and churches are being asked to continue to offer online and remote services. and then u.s. company has been testing a vaccine in australia. results of the trial in july. - >> we are in parallel, making

doses and making the vaccine in anticipation that we will start to deploy it towards the end of the year. >> a dozen experimental vaccines are in the early stages of testing worldwide, and news of the vaccine is giving investors hope. >> thank you, jobina. santa clara county is offering expanded covid-19 tests at six sites. drive through locations will open in milpitas, and san jose. the tests are free for everybody that lives in the county. essential workers are encouraged to get tested now and once a month going forward. abc7 is also focusing on education as part of our commitment to build a better bay area. schools across the state could face budget cuts and that could mean layoffs and furloughs.

there are six jobs on the chopping block and one could affect the cleanliness of schools. >> don't cut corners at this time because it's not time to cut corners. >> the supervisor of the palo alto unified school district making a desperate plea to keep her job. >> the health is viral. you know, disinfecting and sanitizing door knobs, and rest rooms. >> the recommended job cuts that have been announced in palo alto could be seen in other districts as well. cardosa manages the custodians at 17 school sites in the district and she believes her position would be more important next school year where we could see the older students rotating at-school days and a bigger priority on cleaning k through 5

schools all the time. >> and it's the vulnerable community, the little kids. they are not going to keep masks on. we have to make sure those are speck and span, as they say. >> cardosa says in the last two years, there have been cleaner classrooms due to much of the training she has put into place. >> we went from a stage two to stage four, and when i say stage four it means we are bringing up the cleanliness and hygiene of the schools. >> i did reach out to the union rep for the kau stowede custodi said no positions are on the chopping block but they are not adding any either. and federal officials don't

have a plan to help working parents. most schools are out for the rest of the academic year, and a lot of summer camps and daycare centers are canceled. >> my company is currently planning to reopen my office at the end of may, and there are several of us with school aged children, and they have not addressed that point yet. >> a recent abc news exit poll says even if schools were to reopen, close to 70% of parents do not feel comfortable sending their kids back to school. and then tony thurman and the superintendents from oakland, san francisco and san jose unified schools will join us for our latest abc7 listens bay area conversation. join us as we discuss distance learning and the future of our schools, and that's thursday at 4:00 here on abc7. >> it will be another hot day in the bay area in the north bay, people looking to cool off

ignored closed signs and gathered at the beach along the russian river yesterday. a few miles up, the beach is open to locals for walking. yesterday, a lot of out-of-towners showed up. >> as quick as they barricaded it, people pulled them down. >> social distancing has gone out the door. >> reporter: you are concerned? >> concerned? i am beyond concerned. >> a spare the air alert is in effect for the second day in a row. >> hi, reggie, yep, poor air quality is possible once again today and we added the north bay to that area. remember yesterday it was mainly the southbound and our inland east bay neighborhoods. when you look out, there's a little marine layer, about 800 feet and is affecting places like petaluma and half moon bay. but once the sun comes up it

will dissolve that marine layer, especially in the north bay valleys. not along the coast as much, and you will be cooler than the rest of us. and then let's look at the air quality today, do anything you are going to do anything, do it early. mid-90s to even upper 90s was head further south. we could hit 100 in gilroy and also in morgan hill today. 82 at 8:00. the north bay, 90 at noon, and upper 90s for several hours this afternoon. still 82 at 8:00. it's the east bay valleys that will be the hottest. 74 at 8:00, and 92 at noon. a couple hours with triple-digit heat, which means asphalt and cars could be as warm as 140 to 150 degrees, and that's why you

want to stay away from those if you can, and still 89 at 8:00. we have one more day of that and we will show you cooler weather coming up in the weekend forecast. first, let's turn it over to jobina and talk about our essential workers. how are they doing, jobina? >> if they are riding through oakland along 880, they could see fire crews, mike. you likely won't be able to see the issue from here but according to the chp around -- right before 4:00 a.m. they were getting a report of a fire along oak port street which is behind essentially 880. now it looks like the fire is beginning to grow and they have crews on the scene, and i will follow-up and see if i can get more information, but it does not look like it will slow down your commute because it's not on 880, it's on oak port street if you are familiar with the area.

all right. it's 5:13, and here are the seven things to know this morning. the first is look how hot it's going to be. look at all the record-high temperatures, and the only not record is in san francisco. look how old some of the records are, 1896, and napa, it's our second day of heat and more coming in the accuweather 7-day forecast. >> those numbers, mike. number two, governor newsom says

counties can allow in-store shopping with social distancing, but only if counties think it's safe and right now most bay area counties are taking a slower approach to everything so no date is set when we can shop in stores. and places of worship have new guidelines to follow. local counties can decide whether to allow in-person services to return. number four, the port of san francisco is expected to give an update on the massive fire at pier 45 at fisherman's wharf. still no word on a cause. number five, this video from new york central park is taking over twitter and spark outrage. a white woman called 911 on an african-american man after he asked her to put her dog on a leash. we will hear from the man that shot this video coming up in the next half hour. number six, we are going to

start with a live look showing the san mateo bridge, traffic looking good this tuesday morning for our essential workers. >> there's new concern stormy weather could threaten tomorrow's historic spacex astronaut launch. for the first time in almost a decade a manned mission will go into the earth's orbit and blast off from u.s. soil if the weather cooperates. this morning president trump is threatening to pull the largest republican event of the year from north carolina because of coronavirus restrictions. the president says he will move the republican national convention from charlotte if the governor cannot guarantee full atenoa attendance by august. >> this is not commit kpolitica

emotional. this is based on health experts. >> when people gather together, one person can be the spark to spread the virus to many. >> governor cooper says he will rely on data to make any decisions about the convention. he plans to address the issue during a news conference later today. reggie? >> jobina, thank you. we are hearing from east bay congressman for the first time since a running accident nearly cost him his life. he explains a bad fall happened while he was trying to cross an kp kp intersection in d.c. >> i took a fall, and i i my elbow as i flew through the air and landed on my ribs, and i broke multiple ribs and hurt spleen and was in quite a bit of

pain. >> he had pain medication and ten days later he was back at the hospital for pneumonia he developed. he ended up spending five weeks in the icu and four of them on a ventilator. >> i was able to have a conversation with the medical staff, and my family >> he says at one point he was given a 10% chance of surviving. as you can hear, his voice is still horse. doctors do respeexpect him to m full recovery. and then one 13-year-old jack rico got four college degrees, and now he has a full scholarship to the university of nevada where he will pursue his bachelor's degree. >> i am 13, so i don't want to rush everything. i am still trying to figure it out but i want to focus on learning right now because that's what i love to do. >> okay, jack.

different to raise a child like him, or maybe he raises them. who knows? day two of spare the air, and now the north bay is in the fold as one of the areas that could have poor air quality this afternoon. showers looking more promising on saturday, and the heat wave will be broken up by then. the high area of pressure getting squeezed a little today but not enough to make any significant changes away from the coast. and 98 in san jose. 102 in gilroy. redwood city, record high of 98. millbrae, 92, a record high. and upper 70s along the coast, and mid to upper 80s for downtown, and at least 20 to 25 degrees warmer in your valleys with a record 98 in napa, and 99 in santa rosa. 101 in cloverdale.

not a record, but that's hotter. 94 in richmond and 94 in oakland. record high temperatures in high word at 94. remember, walk the dogs early today or whatever pet you may have because the asphalt could get up to 145 degrees this afternoon. tonight will fall back in the 50s and 60s, and it will be comfortable again. up in the hills, 70s once again. you can seat break on thursday. friday, most of us are out of the heat, and for sure, saturday and sunday in the 60s and 70s. hope you enjoy it. >> thanks, mike. onihonoring veterans was a different this year. because of the pandemic the boy scouts could not get together and decorate each gravestone with flowers and flags. so people have been visiting on their own to honor the service members. >> i hope it never ends, the patriotism. >> ginger has two brothers

by now you know the usual ways to stay cool during a heat wave, but these are unusual times. i put it out on facebook and twitter yesterday, some of the other ways people are keeping cool, their unheated hot tubs and their kids' pool, and they are cuddling up to freezer packs, and swamp coolers, and drinking plenty of water sitting in front of fan blowing across water, and those are some of the more interesting ideas and creative ways you can stay cool today, other than the usual ones, which is stay hydrated with water before you get thirsty, and stay where you can out of the direct sun where it

wave. mike is tracking another day triple temperatures. viral images of memorial day crowds. will this summer be too soon to travel? it kind of appears to be a slit decision. >> good morning to you on this tuesday. may 26th. >> we will get to all the stories in a moment but first it's going to be hot so we are checking in with mike to see how hot and how best we can prepare for this. >> yeah, even hotter than yesterday. more record-high temperatures and more creative ways today to stay cool and we have day two of poor air quality. can you see a touch of haze as we look from san jose, where the air quality can be unhealhy in afternoon, and the north bay joined us on this second spare the air day of the season.

for a walk in the mall and get something to eat and head back out before the evening, and get to the house and let everything cool down. >> reporter: now under normal circumstances some community centers would be open. there's no word yet on whether the heat will force officials to explore that option. if you are planning on doing yard work or exercising outdoors, now would be the time to do so. recording live from san jose, lauren martinez, abc7 news. and then we saw a lot of people spending the holiday outside at beaches and parks in san francisco, and this is what it was like in ocean beach yesterday. it was crowded before noon. and volunteers with the san francisco police department chose to enforce the public health order by handing out masks and reminding people to keep their distance. in the face of increasing

coronavirus distancing, there has been viral video showing people not wearing masks or following any social distancing orders. here's jobina with more on that. >> the world health organization is issuing a new warning this morning, saying even areas with declining cases of the coronavirus are still at risk for a second peak if restrictions are eased too soon. this is one of several scenes we saw from over the weekend, a packed pool party at the lake of the ozarks pool party, and one woman said she wanted to kwoequ to have a good time. >> if you are scared and don't want to put yourself in that situation to maybe catch the virus, obviously the your choice to stay home. some people, you know, just wanted to have a good time and really everybody is always going

the crab season. a majority of the 27,000 veterans in san francisco feel lost in navigating their va benefits during this crisis. they are demanding ways to prevent the spread of the virus among vets. you might have seen this if you looked up. a special military flyover yesterday as a memorial day tribute for front-line medical personnel. a plane and two helicopters from the california's air national's guard circled the bay area skies. you are seeing what our crews captured as they flew over the eden medical center in castro valley. ♪ ♪

first, let's check in with mike for our forecast. >> hi, everybody. let's take a look at the marine layer. it's shallow and will be short-lived. it's along the coastal communities and valleys and that's what will allow you to be a little cooler than the rest of us, and even this morning you can see, places like half moon bay, low 50s, and on the bay side of the peninsula, we are in the upper 50s to low 60s, so it's showing how it can be nicer if you are closer to the ocean today. if you can, open the windows and get the fans going and bring in all the cool air because we are at the coolest point of the day, the next hour to hour and a half, draw all that in and then shut the windows and hope it lasts the rest of the day. the bay bridge toll plaza there. here are our three least hot

neighborhoods. san francisco, low to mid-80s for a couple hours this afternoon. we start off at 65 and end at 66 from 8:00 to 8:00. eastbound, 68 at 8:00, and 86 at noon, and then down to 78 at 8:00. and the peninsula warmer from 69 at 8:00, and then mid-90s for several hours this afternoon and 82 at 8:00. those are our least hot neighborhoods. i will show the record highs coming up soon. here's jobina with the morning commute. hi, jobina. >> hi, mike. thank you very much. good morning, everyone. we want to start with the look at at graphics here. in the north bay, we have an issue near calistoga. the chp is calling for a sig-alert there. there's a fire in the area a. structure fire, but all the state route 128 is shutdown tubbs lane. i would avoid the area if you

morning from sutro tower. look at that, 84 to 92 away from the coast where we will stay in the 60s thanks to the ever so shallow marine layer. still in the mid to upper 80s by 7:00. 11 million people across the state under a heat advisory, and the only reason it's not more, l.a. and san diego, they are not. they have a sea breeze there. and then look at the 63 at eureka. 47-degree spread across the state today, reggie. and then a woman is apologizing after she called 911, telling police that an african-american man was threatening her life after he asked her to put a leash on her dog at central park. >> please don't come close to me. >> please call the tops. please call the cops. >> i will tell them there's an

african-american man threatening my life. >> please tell them whatever you like. >> christian cooper posted this video and he said he got in an argument with the woman about her dog being on a leash before he started to to to >> they don't like it when you feed their dog treats, and she didn't like that at all, and she immediately grabbed the dog, as you can see from the video, and started hauling it around by its collar. >> in the evened, the police did not arrest the woman, and she issued the statement to a local station. it was unacceptable and i fully apologize to everybody who has seen the video. everybody that has been offended and everybody that thinks of me in a lower light, and i understand why they do. the woman has since surrendered her dog back to an animal rescue

and her employer has put her on administrative leave. happening tonight, protesters planning a rally outside of facebook in san francisco. they will project messages on the facebook building on fremont street, and they said they should do more to stop the spread of hate, lies and disinformation. they say it's especially important as we approach november. and then the highest number going through checkpoints from when the many shelter-in-place orders started to kick in. travel is down 88% from the same time last year. >> the health care situation is improving in the u.s. to a little extent, but in germany and europe in particular, you do see an interest in new bookings and you do see an increase in

peeks there, that's beyond the marine layer there. the coolness it creates will last at the coast while the rest of us are broiling in day two of record heat and poor air quality that will spread up into the north bay. the weekend looking the coolest with a chance of showers. nearly quarter inch of rain around seattle yesterday with highs in the 60s. quite a difference from what we are dealing with here. look at all the record-high temperatures from the mid-90s to low 100s in the south bay. look for the asterisk to the peninsula. a couple of them, 98 in redwood city, and upper 70s along the coast. the higher you are in elevation, the higher, and mid to upper 80s downtown. south san francisco, sausalito, mid to upper 80s. mid to upper 90s in the inland

valleys. santa rosa and napa have record high temperatures today. same thing in richmond. the hot spot, fremont, 96. a couple highs in concord and livermore, at 100 and 103. walk the dogs early or walk them on the grass because the concrete and asphalt could feel like 120 to 145. and then 70s up in our hills. one more run at record highs tomorrow while the coast cools. you can see the cooling hit the bay on thursday. it moves inland on friday and all of us back in the 60s and 70s by the weekend. we will touch more upon the rain coming up in the next forecast. >> thanks, mike. new at 6:00, the air force is widening the pool of people that can become fighter pilots. first, climbing costs for parents. the finance situation that many have been forced in during this pandemic. the historic lunch

canaveral florida calls for clouds, rain and even lightning. if the launch is scrubbed, it could possibly happen on saturday or sunday. you can watch tomorrow's "america's mission to space" tomorrow at noon our time. and more is coming up on "gma" right after "abc7 mornings." look how dangerous a car can be on a day like today. in 30 minutes with an outside temperature of 95, inside the car it's 130 degrees. up to 140 within an hour. if you can find shade, and don't think i will run into the store and leave my dog or heaven forbid your kid in the car and be right back. you can't do it. it takes minutes for them to saw come to that kind of heat. look where we are thursday, pretty much in the same spot, but as it draws near friday into saturday we have a chance of wet weather on the way.

let's start off -- this has not changed, the heat danger and heat advisory goes through 7:00 thursday evening away from the bay shore and the coast, and solano even with a hotter excessive heat warning. what has changed, spare the air. not that we eliminated it, but it's the north bay, east all potentially with unhealthy air quality in the afternoon and evening hours. as we look at the 12-hour planner, the coast will stay in the 60s. as you head higher in elevation you will hit the 70s, but at the coast, the 60s near the water. look at the 80s and 90s already by noon, and the records will be setting, and we will have to change the record books. relief is on the way for the weekend. i will show you that coming up. here's reggie. >> thank you. a big step forward in our state's path to economic
