the east bay say they're in talks with community partners about where to go from here. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. one place to keep cool in the south bay today san jose is opening five cooling centers. today and tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m. they will be at the may fair roosevelt and cypress community centers and capacity will be limited to keep people socially distanced and masks are required. also happening today, another path on our back to our new normal. governor gavin newsom will expect new information on reopening child care centers and camps. most of the bay area is hanging back. >> the reality is, this pandemic has just begun. it hasn't ended. and while we are moving forward because of stabilization, by no stretch of the imagination is this virus behind us. >> newsom's update allows barbershops and hair salons to

open with added safety measures but only approved counties will have the final say about this. so, locally, that is solano, napa and so far napa is giving the go ahead. coming up a live report on one bay area mall that is choosing to reopen to shoppers today and that is coming up at 5:00 a.m. why that shopping center is one of the early ones to reopen making changes to get ready. modifications are being made to reduce elevator and escalator capacity by 50%. the mall also upgraded its ventilation system to circulate more fresh air inside from the outside. east ridge says all that is left is getting the county approval for curbside pickup. >> two pickup zones. one in their upper level and lower level. it will allow all our mom and pop shops to put our products online if they don't have a digital presence. >> nearly half of the mall's 150

stores are independently owned and operated. now, these differences in what is reopening and where and what stage it falls under can be kind of confusing after a while, especially since it varies it each county. we have a complete guide to what is allowed depending on where you live. just head over to our website, ab abc7news.com. two bay area counties are looking for people to help with contact tracing efforts. santa clara county officials are planning to announce for 1,000 volunteers to investigate and contain every new covid-19 case. the bay area news group is reporting they only have 50 right now. the press democrat reports they plan to hire and pay dozens of contact tracers and this is part to curb the coronavirus pandemic. they plan to have 150 contact tracers and 230 by july 15th.

all right. listen to that. that's a drive-by protest in the east bay. trying to keep social distancing. several cars circled near oakland's lake merritt to protest the planned budget cuts. protesters argue that the city recently laid off employees are african-american and many are oakland residents. they say the cuts will be even further damaging for the local economy. well, we will definitely ask the mayor about this because happening today she is going to be joining us on "midday live." mayor schaaf will discuss the city's latest response to coronavirus and you can watch it starting right here and oakland has until june 30th to pass a budget. abc7 news is committed to four key focuses and building a bet bay yater bay area through

news mike nicco. mike, i was struggling last night. it was so hot. i ep opened the window, it was still hot. i just said i was going to be hot. >> how can i say this to you, sorry and that was it for you. welcome to the warmest morning we are going to have this week. okay. when you talk about opening the windows and trying to stay cool, like kumasi mentioned. you just haven't been able to do it overnight and through this morning. temperatures are up to ten degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. so, we're going to have a small window from about 5:00 to 7:00 and that is when is the best time to open the windows. otherwise look at the numbers along the east bay shore. nice around richmond and berkeley and then get up around 64 degrees and into the hills and look at the mid 70s concord, antioch, brentwood. the hottest area in the morning areas while the rest of us are

pretty much in the 60s until you get down to san jose where it's 71 degrees right now. watch out for hot cars while you're driving today. if you saw my post on twitter. my car was 177 degrees yesterday. the interior upholstery was. i have a black car and interior was silver. you could boil water on my steering wheel yesterday. south bay mid to upper 90s will be several hours today. 78 at 8:00. let's look at what is going on in the north bay. 90 at noon and upper 90s for several hours this afternoon. 81 at 8:00 and our hottest are our east bay valleys, once again. 75 at 8:00 and mid 90s at noon and 100 for a couple hours this afternoon and then 86 at 8:00. the heat does break tomorrow and for more of us friday and thunderstorms on the forecast for the weekend. we'll talk about that coming up, first, is this the first time we're seeing jobina this morning?

90 to 100 at 4:00 and under sunshine at 7:00. we're not the only ones dealing with record high temperature. tahoe 84, two days in a row. sacramento 104 and fresno 108 and notice that southerly surge from santa barbara to monterey. that is our saving grace and we'll try to time that out and breaks the heat in your neighborhood coming up in your seven-day forecast. back to kumasi. >> thanks, mike. new this morning, we're taking a look at a really destructive house fire in san jose overnight. you can see firefighters are still at the scene. this is at one crater lane and north capital avenue and you can see how much damage that fire has done to that home. here's video from earlier. fire investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what caused this fire. it started just before 11:00 last night. a fire captain said it's just soon at this point to tell but

he does suspect an appliance in the garage overheated. luckily, a family of five safely got out. the red cross right now is trying to help them. now on abc7 news live desk update. >> at the live desk, i'm following the froes minneapolis over the death of an unarmed blackm man in custody. here you can see a look at the violent clash overnight. protesters threw wrarocks at officers and officers fired tear gas. this started after cell phone video surfaced of officers arresting george floyd on monday. shows pinning floyd down to the ground with the officer's knee on floyd's neck. floyd later died at the hospital. four police officers have been fired. >> being black in america should

not be a death sentence. this officer failed in the most basic, human sense. >> police say floyd was suspected of trying to pass a check at a store and he was not armed, but he resisted officers. the fbi is investigating the incident. kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. this could only be described as a really strange vacation to china. one local san carlos couple is speaking only to abc7 to tell us about their bizarre experience. they took a cruise there two months before the virus was officially reported. as abc7 news reported everything was going according to schedule until they got to wuhan and now raising questions about how much china knew about the virus and when. >> reporter: call it a cruise of a lifetime that had a bit of a rocky start. >> the whole thing was just a little off. just didn't quite make sense at the time. >> reporter: this is charlie and

margaret describing their brief stop in wuhan, china on november 5th. >> we arrived late afternoon. they told us that there was going to be a change. >> reporter: their relaxed overnight stay turned into a mere three-hour visit and it was literally bam, bam, bam out. >> reporter: within minutes of getting off the plane, the two were rushed to the wuhan history museum. we were the only ones at the museum and we were the only ones at the concert. >> reporter: quickly escorted back on to the ship and we are told we immediately have to leave that night, not the next day. >> reporter: no warning and no explanation. when they tried to question it. >> oh, well, a lot of traffic on the river. i sure as heck didn't see so much traffic. we went zipping right along. >> reporter: is it a coincidence this only happened in wuhan and not any other city on their trip?

maybe, maybe not. the chinese government first reported the virus to the world health organization december 31st. the cdc was notified on january 23rd. more than two months after the getz's visit. >> possible they knew something about what was going on. >> reporter: we asked uc berkeley scientist who studies infectious diseases. >> the fact that they weren't allowed to go into the markets, it sounds like something was already going on in early november. >> reporter: it's all speculation, but -- >> it could have all been nothing but we don't know. >> reporter: stephanie sierra, abc7 news. >> one week after the getz left wuhan several people in their group got sick with coronavirus symptoms but not clear if those people tested positive. we reached out to vikings cruises, but we have not heard back yet. time is 4:49 and checking in with mike still talking about

this heat but maybe some relief, maybe. >> yes, it's not going to be quite as hot along the coast in san francisco and parts of the bay like the east bay, but inland is still going to be just as dangerous as it has been the last three days. we will get our relief starting tomorrow and more so friday. let's talk about the next seven days. we have quite a wild ride. let's start with my accuweather highlights. a lot of 60s and 70s out there and that will lead to record highs, again this afternoon. the cooling sea breeze arrives tonight and doesn't get to all neighborhoods ubtintil friday a saturday chance of dry thunderstorms. thunderstorms, lightning without any rain to make the ground wet that could heighten our fire dangerous. here's a look at our areas of high pressure. still dominating the west coast but starting to get pinched of these two areas of low pressure and those are going to eventually push the high away and open the door for milder temperatures. today low to upper 90s in the

south bay. 92 to about 99 degrees from sunnyvale to los look at the upper 70s along the coast and downtown and sausalito and north bay a little breezy in the afternoon hours along your coast, temper whiches could drop from near 70s to near 60 this afternoon. inland 99 in santa rosa. along the east bay shore. 82 in richmond to fremont at 90 and as you head into the east bay valleys, widespread 100s and record high temperatures, once again. look at the better sleeping weather tonight. more 50s and 60s outside of our hills in contra costa county. upper 60s to low 70s. the 100s kngo away after today d the 80s go away after friday. and 60s and 70s with a couple chances of wet weather and we'll talk more about those next. back to you. >> thanks, mike.

amazon is reportedly in talks to buy a self-driving car company based here in foster city and harry potter author is out with a new children's book and it is free online. kenneth moton has the details in today's tech bytes. >> amazon's effort to increase it automation. reportedly in talks to buy a driverless vehicle start up. completing the deal would help amazon manage its rising shipping costs. google plans to reopen a number of its offices after the july 4th holiday weekend. the company's ceo said returning to brick and mortar locations will be optional for the rest of the year. workers who will stay home will get a $1,000 allowance for equipment. harry potter author j.k.j.k. rowling published a new children's book. she wrote it years ago while working on "harry potter" but not part of his

the plan will address health and safety concerns. there's no official reopening date that's been announced yet, though. disney world has been closed since march because of coronavirus. it's a sign. that's all we needed. just a sign. some hope. let's talk about what is going on. speaking of hope. look at the temperatures for tomorrow. still going to be hot in the inland east bay neighborhood where we can push 99 in antioch and look at the 60s and 70s around the bay and 80s and 90s else where. watch the winds coming out of the south. the southerly surge that brings relief to all of our neighborhood by friday. 60s, 70s and 80s. and look at that saturday 60s and 70s. a 30-degree drop in our inland neighborhoods over a two to three day span. area of low pressure, our savior. our heat breaker. as it draws closer, saturday our best chance of dry thunderstorms will be up in the north bay. couple hundredths of an inch of rain is possible and that's why
