this is abc7 news. and right now at 6:00, hair salons and barbershops have approval to reopen in many parts of the state. it could be a while before you could get a cut in the bay area, but starting today, there are more shopping options available with social distancing. plus, san francisco's new plan to get the economy back on track includes parks, plazas and streets to keep people safe. good morning, everybody. it is wednesday, may 27th. and we are starting this morning with our friend mike and he's talking about dangerous heat that is taking a hold of the bay area. good morning, mike. >> good morning, kumasi, reggie, jobina. hi, everybody. thanks for joining us. we got rid of the poor air quality, but the heat is still around. the areas in orange and red. nothing has changed in our heat advisory or our excessive heat warning. more records today but not as many as yesterday as the core of the hottest air was on top of us yesterday and linger in the north bay and east bay and today the areas hottest and most

likely set some records. still a little hazy as we look from sutro tower. i know you didn't sleep well last night, this morning is our warmest morning. better sleeping starting tonight. you can see the coast. that's where the local sea breeze is most dominant. 50s and 60s and 63 at noon and 83 around the bay and 93 inland and 62 at the coast and we're 90 to 100 around our bay and inland neighborhoods and 58 and the rest of us are still too hot at 80 to 87. talk about our chance for that cooler weather coming up. here's reggie. i know a lot of you are itching to get a hair cut and you will be able to do it 47 counties across the state. here in the bay area, as you know, we take a little longer. the governor announced the state is moving into phase three and an important step in reopening the economy. the economy just one thing we are tracking in our effort to build a better bay area. solano county is one of the

counties that is allowed to reopen barbershops and salons. abc7 julian glover is live with what they are reopening today. julian? >> yeah, good morning, reggie. with indoor malls given the okay to reopen, we do expect the solano town center mall to open their doors for the first time in a long time at 11:00 a.m. this morning. it will be an experience with social distancing guidelines in place. first of all, all the stores not open on the first day back. a staggered reopening with all the vendors back in there by june 2nd. fewer tables and chairs that are farther spread out and masks are only recommended, not required while doing business in solano county and you will not see any signs recommending people to wear them, but you will have to keep your distance from other se said they're just happy to be back. >> i'm so excited. i'm excited to see all my regulars. >> i was waiting for this moment

for a long time because i got nothing else to do. just being at home. so, i'm excited to be open tomorrow. >> so some good news for most business owners in solano county, except for hair salons and barbershops as reggie mentioned. the state has approved their reopening in napa and solano counties but local counties have not yet finalized their health orders and clear to launch to reopen. now the reopening of the town center maul is right on time. when it happens at 11:00 this morning, many of the regular mall walkers will be back seeking refuge from the really high temperaturs today looking nice place to keep cool and that is the place to do it as we near the triple-digit temps that mike was just telling us about. reporting live, julian glover, abc7 news. >> we'll see how that works out for them. thank you, julian. restaurants and businesses in san francisco will soon be able to move outdoors. mayor london breed said the shared spaces program will give

president biden for wearing a mask on memorial day. >> he was standing outside with his wife perfect conditions, perfect weather. >> reporter: while biden fired back on cnn. >> he's a fool. an absolute fool to talk that way. i mean, every leading doc in the world is saying we should wear a mask when you're in a crowd. >> today disney will present its plans to reopen walt disney world in orlando. disney shanghai opened earlier this month with social distancing measures in place. ines de la cuetara. >> live desk update. i have the results on a new study that shows how americans are feeling about a coronavirus vaccine. if a vaccine was approved, only 49% of americans say they would be vaccinated. we're also learning this morning that the study conducted by the associated press and public affairs research surveyed more than 1,000 adults.

most believe a vaccine will become available some time next year. 49% say they will get vaccinated. 20% say they will not get vaccinated and 31% of americans say they're unsure. older americans and people who seem to worry about infecting a family member were more likely to say they would be vaccinated. kumasi? >> thank you, jobina. antibody tests for coronavirus may not be as reliable as previously thought. the cdc now warning they might have been wrong up to half of the time. antibody tests look for evide e evidence. because of the lack of accuracy, the test should not be a factor in determining factors around reopening. tomorrow the dmv will reoper more offices including eight here in the bay area. the dmv reopened 25 sites earlier this month. going to show you a map now with the bay area offices that are reopening tomorrow.

daly city, fairfield, fremont, pittsburg, santa clara and the oakland coliseum. well, these social distancingcircles that started popping up at san francisco parks last week are now getting a lot of use, especially with this warm weather that we have been having. there are 300 in total at four different parks. dolores park, jackson playground and little marina green. >> i think it's helpful to have some guidelines and helpful parameters for folks, especially when we bring our kid. >> well, it was these images from a park in brooklyn, new york, that inspired the idea here in the bay area. the circles in san francisco are eight feet in diameter and spaced eight feet apart ensuring social distancing and now they're getting e-mails from physicists about trying different shapes. >> suggesting that if we try a certain type of triangle, you could fit more spaces and, you know, this is one big, you know,

for the most part, a relatively smooth morning. i do want to take you to the maps of san francisco, though. so i can show you the biggest disruption for our essential commuters is going to be the full closure of state route 1 between 101 and gary boulevard. this is in the northbound and southbound direction. this started at 10:00 p.m. and this will wrap up around 8:00 p.m. and that is due to road cnstruction in the area. avoid this because you will not be able to get through. now to a live look in the south bay, check out 101 in san jose. pretty clear ride for the most part. again, as we continue throughout the week, we will see more and more people head out on the roads. check that out. looking good. everything is, you know, pretty clear. so, i'll let you know if anything changes. reggie and kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. a low-budget movie number one in america and it could be because of drive-ins. also, this video will stop you in your tracks. the shocking video of a bear walking right behind

abc7 mornings. >> all news, all morning. >> welcome back, everyone. five people had minor injuries after a tree branch snapped and fell at a san francisco park. it happened just before 6:00 last night at washington square park. a witness says that there were quite a few people there celebrating a birthday. it was at filbert and stockton street and a person who saw it saw how quickly everything evolved. >> a crackling and splitting noise from the tree and all of a sudden that huge branch came down. i couldn't register what was happening. it just split and then it fell. >> this is the same park where a huge branch fell in 2016 and landed on a woman while she was watching her kids on the playground. that accident left her paralyzed.

all right. also new thisern morning the academy of sciences is facing a shortfall because of the pandemic. the museum says 75% of its staff will be impacted as itg fun to operations during the shutdown and this includes feeding and caring for the nearly 40,000 animals a that academy. they are hoping to reopen in july. the san francisco botanical garden will partially reopen this monday. visitors are encouraged to buy tickets in advance to reduce transaction times at gates. capacity will be limited and social distancing and face coverings will be required. well covid-19 has forced movie theaters across the country to shut their doors but movie goers are finding a more traditional approach and we're talking about the drive in. one film has stood out above the rest at the box office. a horror movie you may not have heard of "the wretche."

upda upda update. i have an update on the confrontation in central park. many of you have seen this video by now. it was captured by chris cooper after getting into an argument over whether the woman's dog should be on a leash. the woman called the police on cooper. she could be heard on the phone repeatedly describing him as, quote, african-american man p. police say when officers showed up cooper and the woman was both gone. the woman has since been fired from her employer based out of san mateo. the shelter did take that dog back. kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. despite being in the middle of bankruptcy, jcpenney launched a new brand. the company announced its linden

temperatures coming up in the weekend forecast. until then, here's kumasi. >> as mike just mentioned, we're expecting another day of extreme heat and that could mean some power outages. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with that warning from pg&e. amy? >> power outage would really hurt today, kumasi, as everyone really needs their air conditioning because there aren't many places to go to cool off. this pool here at heather farms in walnut creek would be so refreshing and cool, but it is closed because of the pandemic. that is the situation all over the place. the malls that we usually go to, movie theaters for air conditioning. those are closed. same as libraries. even cooling centers that they often will open for seniors on hot days like this are not available. ice cream shops are even closed. this is a doublese seniors who are most vulnerable in the heat. county officials say they're getting a lot of worried phone calls. >> we're asking them to stay

solano county mall that is getting ready to reopen. others are making significant safety changes to get ready for their own opening. at east ridge center modifications are being made right now to reduce elevator and escalator capacity by 50%. the mall also upgraded its ventilation system to be able to circulate more fresh air from the outside. east ridge says all that is left is getting county approval for curbside pickup. >> our new click to curbside pickup will have two zones one on our upper level and one on the lower level. >> nearly half tof the mall 150 stores are independently owned and operated. so, obviously, a lot of differences as you go from county to county regarding what stage we're in exactly. we do have a complete guide to what is allowed depending on where you live. just head over to our website, ab abc7news.com. new this morning two bay area counties are looking for

people to help with contact tracing efforts. they are looking for 1,000 volunteers to investigate and contain every covid-19 case. our bay area news group reports they only have about 50 right now. in sonoma county, the press democrat is reporting that officials plan to hire and pay dozens of contact tracers as part of its plan to curb coronavirus. sonoma county plans to have 150 planned contact tracers by june 15th and 230 by july 15th. building a better bay area during these unprecedented times. helping you navigate through the changing workplace, health, economy and education. to whatever our next life looks like. when it comes to education, the state is still working on guidelines for school districts to reopen and improve distance learning. happening today, we are expecting to hear again from state superintendent tony therman. last week he reminded us that the districts decide when to reopen and how.

in the 80s at 7:00. today we'll focus on know the signs. it's day three of the heat. in fact, when i was taking those temperatures yesterday, my neighbor's lawn service guys were out there long sleeves, jeans, 100 degree heat mowing and landscaping their lawn. i couldn't believe it. i felt so bad for them. if you get sweaty and hot, go inside. if you stop sweating, call 911. that's when it becomes an emergency. now an abc7 news live desk update. protests in minneapolis over the death of an unarmed black man in police custody. protesters threw rocks at officers last night and in return officers fired tear gas. this all started after cell phone video surfaced of officers arresting george floyd on monday. the video shows an officer pinning floyd to the ground as floyd says he cannot breathe.
