state of agony. this as more protests erupt in american cities, the anger growing across the country fromt george flo in police cus >> alex restar uoff minneapolithis morni with the very latest where a state of emergency has been declared. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the situation here is still very active. i want to show you what it looks like. take a look behind me here. you can see some of the state authorities working to keep the peace here and in the distance they're working to put out a fire. if you look over here, a lot of buildings like this one reduced simply to a shell. overnight, chaos in the streets of minneapolis. buildings and cars on fire. thick, black smoke filling the sky as protesters demanding justice for george floyd clash with police. some demonstrators smashing windows of this police precinct. officers on the roof firing smoke and flash bang grenades.

the crowd dispersed,uthe precinct. police evacuating as protesters set fire to the building. many watching the building go up in flames as the city of minneapolis warned of unconfirmed reports that gas lines of the third precinct have been cut and other explosives are in the building, pleading, please retreat in the event the building explodes. the city's mayor declaring a state of emergency, minnesota's governor activating the national guard to try and maintain order, sending 500 soldiers to the area. this as clashes erupt across the country. in denver, one car drove into a crowd of protesters knocking one person to the ground before the crowd chased after it. in downtowatli dozens were arrested. one officer punched in the face and another hit with a trash can. one person allegedly attempted to take an officer's gun from their holster. protesters gathering around the

country, a rally outside this police station in los angeles. in phoenix, tensions rising as protesters and police come face-to-face and in columbus, ohio, people storming the statehouse smashing windows. the country on edge after federal and local authorities called for calm but did not announce charges, saying they're working on the investigation as quickly as possible. >> i can't breathe. >> reporter: the violence is sparked by this shocking video showing white police officer derek chauvin jamming his knee into floyd's neck pinning him down until he loses consciousness. chauvin and three other police officers have been fired and the mayor wants chauvin arrested. this as we learn more about the man floyd was. a newly surfaced video showing the security guard calling for an end to gun violence. >> one day it's going to be you and god. you're going up or you're going down. >> reporter: a city trying to pick up the pieces and find peace. >> i'm absolutely sorry for the

pain, the devastation and the trauma that mr. floyd's death has left on his family, his loved ones, our community here in minneapolis and certainly across the country and the world. >> reporter: and look at this scene behind me here. you can see that dark billowing smoke behind me. that smoke can be seen across the area for miles. protestors will tell you that police station that was burned, that was a symbol of the anger and lack of trust that they have for authorities here in this area. those protests scheduled to continue. >> alex, you were there on the ground overnight. what was it like? >> reporter: well, michael, i can tell you this was a nonstop operation on all sides here. protestors and demonstrators, officers and authorities all here through the night. there were several fires burning at the same time and also several clashes at the same time. these protests expected to

continue. officials calling for peace. >> all right, very tense situation, thank you so much, alex. amy. we turn to washington and president trump tweeting his reaction to those protests overnight. twitter then flagging his comments saying the tweet violated rules about glorifying violence, escalating his showdown with the social media giant. senior white house correspondent cecilia vega has more on this. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: amy, good morning to you and this is sure to escalate that war even more. this happened just before 1:00 a.m. president trump tweeting, i can't stand back and watch this happen to a great american city, minneapolis, a total lack of leadership. he then goes on to blast the city's mayor as weak and to get it under control or he will send in the national guard, and saying, quote, these thugs are dishonoring the memory of george floyd and i won't let that happen. the president adding, quote, any difficulty and we will assume control, but when the looting starts, the shooting starts, he says. now twitter flagged that as a

violation of its rules about glorifying violence. that means users can't see that shooting line unless they specifically click on it. minneapolis's mayor responding quickly saying, weakness is pointing your finger at somebody else during a time of crisis, but of course, this move by twitter overnight is just the latest salvo in all of this. the president signed that executive order targeting social media companies yesterday after twitter put those fact-check labels on his tweets earlier this week, but legal experts say the order will likely end up in the courts and without action from congress, whit, they are predicting this move by the president might prove to be more bluster than anything else. >> all right, cecilia vega for us, thank you. now to the urgent investigation into the death of george floyd. the fbi launching a probe. the doj calling it a top priority, but again, no charges yet against those officers involved. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas joins us now from washington with more on that. pierre, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. faced with that explosive video of a black man pleading for his life at the hands of police the

justice department and fbi are quickly stepping in, a sign of just how volatile this situation is. with anger spiking and fire and looting erupting in minneapolis, the fbi and justice department are beginning a full-scale investigation into the death of george floyd. federal authorities making it clear they plan on interviewing scores of witnesses and looking for any additional video that may be helpful. >> each little piece of the puzzle helps us complete the big picture. >> reporter: at a press conference thursday authorities vowing they would pursue an aggressive probe but it reignited questions of race and policing. >> give me and give the united states attorney the time to do this right and we will bring you justice. i promise. i will say this, that that video is graphic and horrific and terrible and no person should do that. but my job in the end is to prove that he violated a criminal statute.

>> reporter: this morning we're learning that police records show derek chauvin, the officer who had his knee on floyd's neck for several minutes, has faced more than a dozen complaints over the course of his 19-year career with the minneapolis police. disciplined for two of them. it's uncertain what the complaints were for. the fbi is looking for any new videos showing the deadly encounter and will be dissecting every frame of that video of floyd's death and sources say the fbi plans to do a detailed background investigation of all the officers, especially the one who had his knee on the back of floyd's neck to prove a civil rights case. the fbi would likely have to show some level of bias by the officers and specific intent to violate floyd's civil rights. michael. >> all right, thank you so much, pierre. we turn now to the latest on the coronavirus emergency. in the past 24 hours there have been more than 21,00 cve1,000 new deaths in the united states. at least 14 states reported an increase in cases but there's hope for hard-hit new york city

inching closer to taking the first steps towards re-opening. eva pilgrim joins us now with the latest. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, michael. new york city is preparing to re-open and the mayor here says he's confident that the city will be ready in a matter of weeks. this morning, concerns over how to keep workers safe as america re-opens. the mayor of new york city saying, phase one is likely to begin in the next two weeks with 200,000 to 400,000 new yorkers returning to work. new york governor cuomo thursday signing an executive order authorizing private businesses to deny entry to people without face coverings. >> that store owner has a right to protect themselves. that store owner has a right to protect the other patrons in that store. >> reporter: this as we're learning of more outbreaks at food packing plants, hot spots for the virus. one fruit packing plant in washington state announcing 70 employees recently tested positive for covid-19.

61 of the cases were asymptomatic. the company's ceo pointing to a breakdown of wearing masks and social distancing when employees were on their breaks. >> we could have done better. i think to this process we learned that we didn't do enough and i sure hope that through our experience which obviously has been very painful for many, that others will learn from it. >> reporter: and at the tyson food plant in sherman, texas, more than 300 employees tested positive for the virus, more than 20% of that plant's workers. 49 have been cleared to return back to work. but as some are preparing to head back into the fray, more than 40 million americans are out of work. 2.1 million people filing new unemployment claims last week, 40 million in the last ten weeks. around the country, people waiting in line for food that stretches as far as the eye can see. as some states try to return to

normalcy, texas' governor abbott announcing overnight that fans will be allowed at professional sporting events in most counties at 25% capacity starting today. meanwhile, others still canceling events. the boston marathon which was postponed earlier this year canceled for the first time in its 124-year history. health officials in the atlanta area are investigating cases that could possibly be tied to graduation parties, but they haven't been able to figure out the size of that cluster because many are reluctant to talk, showcasing the issue with tracing. it is dependent on people cooperating. amy. >> yeah, it's so complicated. eva, thank you so much. well, dr. jennifer ashton is going to join us now, and dr. ashton, let's start with the headline coming out of washington state saying that nearly half of all new cases are people under the age of 40. what does that tell us and what should we be keeping in mind as we head into the weekend and summer? >> well, amy, it's a reminder that no one is at zero risk from this virus, unclear exactly why

it's hitting this age group right now particularly hard. leading theories are it's due to behavior, either socializing or work. but, again, it really underscores how everyone has a role to play in stopping the spread because anyone can get infected. >> it's so important to remember that. there's also a new study that was released about covid-19 and people with cancer. what were the findings, and what can we learn from it? >> yeah, very important study, amy, just out in the journal "lancet," looked at 900 patients with cancer in the united states, canada, spain, and what they found is that 30 days after diagnosis with covid, they faced a 13% mortality rate. that is more than double the average global rate. so it's a reminder this is a special and vulnerable population with a compromised immune system and it's possible that this kind of data could potentially lead to differences

in screening or either treatments for both covid and patients dealing with cancer in the setting of this pandemic. >> all right. dr. jen ashton, as always, thank you so much. whit. amy, now to the kansas soldier being called a hero after taking down an active gunman speaking out this morning about the quick thinking that saved countless lives when the shooter started randomly firing at drivers crossing a bridge. diane macedo joins us with more on that story. diane, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit. master sergeant david royer said when he hit traffic on the centennial bridge he was just thinking about getting home but then he saw a man with a rifle and knew he had to take action. this morning, a kansas soldier and father is telling his story after taking down an active shooter with his own vehicle. >> my adrenaline kicked in immediately. i felt like i needed myself to do something. i was closest to the suspect and knew people were in danger. >> reporter: police say it all started late wednesday morning when a suspect stopped his car on the centennial bridge in leavenworth, got out and started

firing at random, hitting several vehicles. master sergeant david royer tells me he was in traffic behind the suspect's stopped car and on the phone with his fiancee when he realized what was happening. >> he pulled a rifle out of his trunk. i was talking to my fiancee on the phone at the time. i was kind of shocked. this guy has a rifle, and he began to fire his rifle. so i kind of looked around real fast and just the only decision i thought i could make was to hit the suspect with my vehicle. >> he said, there's an active shooter on the bridge. call 911. i immediately switched over to 911. >> reporter: police have not identified the suspect, but say he's from missouri and remains in critical condition. the one victim shot who is also a soldier is said to be recovering but police say there would have been many more victims if not for royer's actions. >> he won't call himself a hero. i will. let's be absolutely crystal clear. his actions yesterday were heroic.

he saved countless lives. >> reporter: and while royer credits his military training for his actions, he also credits his upbringing. his father was a truck driver who pulled several people from car wrecks. his brother is also in the military and also saved lives so it appears bravery runs in the family, guys. >> definitely the right person in the right place at the right time. >> imagine what his fiancee was thinking on the phone listening to that. >> thank you so much for that, diane. we are following a lot of other headlines this morning, including the new normal for las vegas. our exclusive look at how two of the most famous casinos plan to re-open next week with new safety measures. and murder hornets on the move. the new evidence that the huge insects are covering more territory than expected. what experts say needs to be done now to stamp them out. first though, let's get a check of the weather and get out to rob marciano. rob, good morning. >> hey, good morning, whit. we had some rough weather across the midsection of the country yesterday. seven reports of tornadoes and a lot of rain across kansas city.

right now the unemployment rate is the highest in the country. but soon, some of those people can get back to work. each year more than 42 million people escape to vegas filling hotels, pools and casinos. and while the lights have remained on, the entertainment week casino doors that were designed to remain open 24 hours a day bolted shut. >> to walk through and see it quiet, again, it's eerie and sad. >> reporter: the governor giving the okay for casinos to open their doors at 10:00 a.m. june 4th. ultimately people come to las vegas to have fun. how do you create that fun experience for them while maintaining all these new safety protocols? >> of course, the health and safety of our guests and employees was our top priority before and it will always be our top priority. i think for us, we still want to be able to do this in a measured way. we definitely want -- we're in no hurry to fill the place up. >> reporter: bellagio and flamingo among the first

properties to open, and they gave "gma" an exclusive look inside. >> the stage is set. the two elements that are missing are the guests and the employees. >> reporter: on a normal day 20,000 people walk through bellagio's doors opening at 30% capacity, evidence of their new normal is everywhere. >> so this is the new blackjack table. >> that's right. at least at an mgm resorts property you will see we put plexiglas in at each of our table games, especially with blackjack and we've reduced the number of seats down from 6 to 3. >> so this partition is not regulated by the gaming board, though. you guys did this, right? >> that's exactly right. >> reporter: additional cleaning and safety measures in place for high-touch playing pieces. >> we'll be regularly cleaning the cards and the dice, like, for example, in craps every time a new shooter takes the dice, the dice will be disinfected. >> reporter: for guests staying at strip hotels, they will have their temperature taken before they check in.

>> there will be a walk-through thermal check just to the right of that. >> just like at tsa. >> exactly. >> reporter: in an effort to encourage people to return to the city, one vegas hotel ceo offering up a thousand free flights. they were claimed in just two hours. >> great to see people want to get out and we've done a lot to enhance safety and we want people to come out and have some fun. >> reporter: he added more flights and more optimism that the city will be vibrant again. temperature checks are going to be a huge part of the new safety protocols. properties like the venetian are using infrared thermal scanners and all will have medical staff on hand and some will even offer on-site covid testing. and while everyone i spoke with said it's still the vegas you know and love, it might just look a little bit different for a while. michael? >> and now what happens in vegas

may not stay in vegas. may go with you. all right, kayna. now to the return of the so-called murder hornets, the aggressive insects that pose a threat to honey bees and sometimes people appear to have resurfaced in the pacific northwest and will reeve joins us with more. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, michael. more and more murder hornet sightings keep popping up all over the region. photos circulating of them found as experts do what they can to try to find more. this morning, scientists are investigating reports of several possible new murder hornet sightings in the northwest. experts say this unusual looking insect killed two weeks ago by a woman in her canadian home just over the border from washington state was an asian giant hornet. officials now investigating to see if this hornet was a queen, if she had made it, and are doing dna testing to see where it came from. >> the newest find is beyond the normal foraging range of this

particular hornet. >> it tells us we do have an impending infestation on our hands. >> reporter: now researchers in washington state are investigating this hornet found dead on the side of the road less than 20 miles away in the town of custer. this hornet found just eight miles away from where two were found last year. >> the good news for that is that that's two nests that can't start now because they're both dead. the bad news is that means there are probably more queens in the area that might be establishing nests. >> reporter: the asian giant hornet popularly known as the murder hornet can grow up to two inches long and up to five times larger than a honeybee. its stinger long enough to pierce through a beekeeping suit and its venom can be fatal especially if stung repeatedly. the hornets killing up to 50 people in japan annually. due to the climate of washington state, experts are concerned they may spread even further. >> there is this potential of these hornets eventually migrating farther south and who knows how far south. >> reporter: at the same time authorities issuing a warning,

alerting the public that signs like these left at several trail heads in washington claiming giant hornets were nesting in the area are fake. experts say overall there really aren't that many murder hornets in the pacific northwest and they're more interested in other insects than they are in humans or their pets. the biggest challenge they say is eradicating them before they can move south to places like oregon and even california. guys? >> wow. >> 2020. >> continues to sting. >> oh. >> wow. >> extra slow response. >> that's like when you hit -- >> you nailed it. >> shut the music down in the club. you just did that. >> an early last call on that one. okay. >> wow. coming up later in the show, sailor brinkley-cook, daughter of supermodel christie brinkley is opening up about her struggles with body image.

that week of summer vacation when you can really relax, well, unfortunately it's going to take a lot more thought and planning this year. getting away from the stress of everyday life is adding stress to those planning summer trips. across the country at least 22 states have some form of travel and quarantine restrictions. in my home state, hawaii, there is a 14-day quarantine rule. you can't leave your hotel room at all. violations come with a $5,000 fine and up to a year in jail. so far aut dozens of visitors have been cited and arrested. the visitors bureau coining it aloha later but it's a very different story in wyoming. the slogan is wy responsibly. stating it's a wide-open safe haven for visitors. >> we really haven't gone anywhere. that's probably why we're ready to do something outside our home. >> reporter: this family is planning to go from idaho to montana for some r&r, but -- >> we're trying to be prepared for potentially needing to cancel the trip. >> reporter: that flexibility is

smart, says the former head of the cdc, dr. tom frieden. >> think ahead and think about the risks and benefits. >> reporter: he says research the local travel restrictions extensively and think through the steps of getting there. winging it, he said, is not a good idea. yt to makha g goi to be welcome and able to do the things you plan to do. >> reporter: for the clump family of louisville, kentucky, they're considering a flight to florida for a family reunion in july. >> i can see it being a bit challenging to keep a mask on our 6-year-old for -- it's a two-hour flight there and then we have a layover in baltimore for four hours. >> reporter: so they are considering driving to the sunshine state. but florida, one of the most popular destinations, has another consideration for visitors. if you're coming from the tri-state area of new york, new jersey or connecticut, you must self-isolate for 14 days in your vacation lodging. >> if you're in an area that is low risk you don't want to go to a high risk place.

if you're in an area that is high risk you need to be careful. >> reporter: no matter where you're going -- >> if you have an underlying health condition like diabetes or kidney failure or you're older, you really need to think twice about exposing yourself to that kind of risk. >> reporter: vacation this summer is a lot more complicated. overnight the governor of hawaii just said he will extend the quarantine order past the original june 30th end date. there had been high hopes the 50th state would re-open july 1st. we were slated to go july 2nd and that means no visits with my parents for an indefinite amount of time. whit, this is the longest my kids have ever gone not seeing their grandparents. i think your in-laws are there too. it's hard for the kids and the grandparents. >> we've been having the same conversation. my wife's from hawaii. her parents are there. we have a trip planned, not sure what to do. the question, how will local authorities enforce some of these rules? >> yeah, when a state mandates self-isolation or quarantine,

the third precinct that was also on fire overnight after so much chaos and another night of violent demonstrations tearing that city apart. anger boiling over after the death of george floyd in police custody. >> not just there in minnesota, more protests erupting in cities across the country. from denver to new york to los angeles. >> let's go back to alex perez who is on the scene for us in minneapolis. good morning again, alex. >> reporter: good morning, michael. the situation here remains very, very active. i want to you take a walk with me. i want to show you the scene behind me. you can see some of the state authorities here right behind me, and in the distance there you can see those national guard vehicles. the national guardsmen here deployed to help keep the peace. even beyond that, you can see the flashing lights and there's a fire truck. that ladder in the middle of the street there, authorities working to put out multiple fires. the protests here and across the country turning violent. overnight, chaos in the streets of minneapolis.

crowd chased after it. in downtown manhattan, police say dozens were arrested, one officer punched in the face and another hit with a trash can. one person allegedly attempted to take an officer's gun from his holster. protesters gathering around the country. a rally outside this police station in los angeles. in phoenix tensions rising as protesters and police come face-to-face. and in columbus, ohio, people storming the statehouse smashing windows. the country on edge after federal and local authorities called for calm, but did not announce charges saying they're working on the investigation as quickly as possible. a city now trying to pick up the pieces and find peace. >> i'm absolutely sorry for the pain, the devastation and the trauma that mr. floyd's death has left on his family, his loved ones, our community here in minneapolis and certainly across the country and the world.

>> reporter: and we've turned the corner here. to give you an idea of the magnitude of the situation, look behind me. you can see all of that water coming from this building, what's left of the shell of this building here. authorities trying to extinguish a fire. down in the middle of the street you see another line of authorities there trying to keep any crowds or people out of the way and behind them it's very clear that billowing smoke, another fire burning behind those officers there. now, if you talk to protesters here they will tell you that that police station building that burned, that was a sign of the anger and lack of trust that they have for authorities here. the protests here and across the country, expected to continue. guys. >> yeah, and minneapolis still burning there. alex perez, thank you. well now as protesters continue to demand justice in the death of george floyd, some are stepping in to lend a helping hand to his family

disillusion black people who are forced to see these things that we know are happening. >> reporter: but these incidents are all happening at a time when african-americans are disproportionately dying and feeling the economic impacts of covid-19, and what we see play profound exhaustion in the black community that makes this moment feel different that we're dealing with racial tensions that are nothing new. >> black loved ones have to communicate the realities of the world as it exists to young black people and to black children so that they understand the world that they are navigating, but the question is how do you do that without then making it seem as if the reality that one has to navigate are somehow their fault? exng have do with look, we're in a pandemic now. about a quarter of covid death, african-americans who only make up 13% of the population. we are at 16.7% unemployment for

black america. that's 2 percentage points higher than the average. there is a sense of exhaustion with all going on, we have to see this play out on our screens. people that look like us going through that and there's his words, a profound exhaustion in the country right now. >> a few years ago eric garner, we watched that play out. >> yep. >> on tape. you have perpetrators who have gone into black churches who have murdered, you know, the church members and they were arrested peacefully after these incidents and yet you have black men who are on the street, not resisting, who are killed, and i think you see this over and over again and at some point people are tired of it, t.j. it has to change at some point p so >> you see someone victimized, and then the community feels victimized again after a press conference like yesterday. was a knee on a man's neck for nine-plus minutes.

"gma's" ultimate backyard barbecue and "gma's" resident chef michael symon is joining us from home where he has unfortunately had to move inside because of the weather. so he's not at the grill but still going to talk to us about how to get it done. hey, buddy. how are you doing? >> doing good. got a little drizzle today so we're keeping it inside. anything you could cook, you know, outside you can cook inside.

no problem. >> right. i love that. i like how you can pivot like that you'll show us something inspired by a dish from one of your favorite restaurants? >> yeah, this is one of my dear friends, doug katz's restaurant in cleveland, ohio called zhug, and it's a roasted cauliflower dish and really spectacular even for a carnivore like myself, you get all chose big kind of meaty flavors from roasted cauliflower as youou carnorik h i love that. i'm moving a little more toward plant based so excited about this. we even got the folks at zhug to show us how they do it. take a look. >> today we're going to be making our signature cauliflower dish. you got a head of cauliflower. i removed the root and the stem.

it's got a lot of smoked paprika in it, turmeric, cumin, kosher salt, a little bit of white sugar and a healthy amount of olive oil. this is going to go into the oven at 400 degrees for about 15 minutes. when it's ready, it's going to look something like this. we'll start with our orange chimichurri and have toasted sliced almonds, some golden raisins, shaved and pickled carrot. mint, parsley and finish with olive oil. there you go, guys. >> all right. so you saw it from your buddies at zhug. now, michael, youit. cauliflower is one of the hottest vegetables. it's trending because we are on the cutting edge as always, but it's also a great option because of thebout this meat shortage. talk us through it, buddy.

>> well, we love a trending cruciferous vegetable. also inexpensive which is great. if you were doing this on a grill, you get the grill like one side would be very hot, one is cool so you turn it into a pan in an oven. i have a cast iron pan over a medium high heat. we drizzled our cauliflower steaks and getting two steaks per piece of cauliflower and then we save all the pieces so we get like a double whammy here and i just put a good amount of olive oil, salt and pepper on here and put the pan on the medium high heam sear for about four, five minutes a side to get them nice and caramelized. as that is happening, i have the juice of one orange and the zest, a quarter cup of water, some golden raisins, garlic, chili flakes and cumin. if you don't like cumin, you can use other spices, use whatever kind of fits your fancy. to that, i'll add about a quarter cup of flat leaf parsley, quarter cup of mint and quarter cup of

toasted pistachio and some capers and we mix this all together with a couple good glugs of olive oil. glugs is a technical term, big cooking term, a glug or two, and then a splash of sherry vinegar. and a good amount of cracked black pepper, and then this becomes almost the dressing for not only the roast, the pan roast cauliflower, but also for this little shaved, raw vegetable cauliflower the pieces, parts that fall off when we get the steak because waste not, want not and dump this on top of your raw cauliflower. you give it a little toss. so then have you this beautiful, raw cauliflower salad that just gently warms through with almost nattand thi llome here and you can see, see, that's

what you want. you want that deep caramelization. whether doing it on a grill or at home, that gives it that meaty deliciousness and you put that guy down and then i just take a little bit of my raw cauliflower salad which turns into the sauce for this and you get this beautiful dish that would be a great -- like if you are a carnivore and can't live without the meat, this would be delicious with like a roasted chicken, or you could just eat it as an entree as a side for yourself too so it's inexpensive. it's a great substitute if you're looking for something different or if you wanted to have an interesting side, it works both ways and one of the things i love about zhug through this entire -- zhug, i'm sorry, through this entire situation they've been doing carryout really feeding the people of cleveland and doing this beautiful, clean, delicious food
