looting, vandalism and multiple officers injured. this, after large violent protests in the bay area over the killing of george floyd. significant businesses left behind to businesses already struggling during the pandemic with the outrage now spreading across the country. good morning, everyone. it's saturday, may 30th. i'm liz kreutz. we have a lot to get to today. we'll have much more on those protests. first, let's get a quick look at the weather. here is meteorologist lisa argen. hey, lisa. >> hey, liz. definitely hearing rumbles of thunder out there. maybe you can smell that fresh scent of rain. as we look at our storm impact scale it's a level one today with scattered showers, gusty southerly winds and a chance of those thunderstorms. look at this radar. look at all those lightning

strikes. i don't think i've seen so many in one spot. as we go in closer, the main activity is in the north bay, showers around bodega bay, santa rosa. richmond/san rafael bridge, overnight showers. lightning strike east of lafayette. looking at the mild temperatures from the upper 50s in vallejo, mid 60s in hayward. we're warmer because of those southerly winds this morning. upper level winds anywhere from 12 to 35 miles an hour. it's a breezy day today. winds out of the south, 10:00, in the mid to upper 60s with that area of low pressure traveling to the north bay. we'll have the clouds, scattered showers, chance of a thunderstorm and temperatures will be in the 70s in our inland valleys. we'll track the rain and talk amounts coming up. liz? >> lisa, thank you. we continue to follow the protests in the east and south bay over the death of george floyd, the man in minneapolis

who died in police custody earlier this week. in oakland, protesters seemed to disperse around 1:30 this morni morning, about 5 1/2 hours of marching and demonstrations. no word yet on how many people were arrested during the protests. police say they are investigating, though, an incident involving two contract security officers for the federal protective service who were shot. they say one of those officers has died from his injury. the other officer is in stable condition. this happened at the federal building on clay street at 9:45. the fbi says a person inside the vehicle began firing gunshots at contract security officers. police say they are investigating to determine whether the shooting is related to the protests. protesters were in that area. the federal protective service, which falls under the department of homeland security provides security and law enforcement service at homeland security. we'll bring you any updates as

we get it. oakland police say no current protests are ongoing right now. officers are still patroling the streets. protests turned violent after demonstrators clashed with oakland police last night and shut down interstate 880 for some time. you could even see them running on to the street, almost getting hit by cars. hundreds started marching around 8:00 last night. that's when they began. the demonstration escalated about an hour later when officers lined up to block police headquarters then sprayed tear gas at protesters who threw bottles. their condition is not known at this time but this is what it looked like at the start of the gathering. a peaceful protest at frank ogawa plaza. several people spoke before they began marching. and take a look at this. this is how things turned,

mercedes-benz dealership in oakland. protesters went on to set some of the cars on fire. they sprayed graffiti on some of those cars. really intense video there. no word yet on the cost of danl to that building or to the car. and looters broke into the target on broadway in oakland. you can see them breaking the glass outside that target inside they're looting, it looks like, beer, took alcohol, some took video games. no word on how much was stolen from the store or what the damage is going to cost. and self-cell phone videos and photos are being posted on social media of these protests. luz pena has more. >> reporter: many of these people have been using the #georgefloyd, many asking for revenge. many of the video i started seeing started around 3:00, many of them asking for them to meet at city hall in oakland. crowds began to meet at city

hall and quickly spread into i-80 around 9:00 p.m. we have shocking video of protesters walking into incoming traffic in hopes to stop the flow of cars going 60-plus miles per hour. we can see protesters almost getting hit by a chp officer. on the side of the freeway, protesters throwing heavy objects to the officers' cars as they avoided the crowds. after several minutes of taking over part of i-80, protesters began to walk down into the streets of oakland, where many can be heard saying, let's keep moving, let's keep moving and remember his name, george floyd, george floyd. let's continue to the next video. this next video, we can see protester grabbing a chair, throwing it into the business. on the side we see protesters breaking a glass of chase bank in downtown oakland and see shattered glass on the ground as more protesters vandalize this bank. fourth video, this crowd moved on to vamdi ivandalizing walgr r

pharmacy. looting and what seems like smoke inside this walgreens as crowds of people are rushing in. similar to those scenes in minneapolis of protesters looting and starting fires. luz pena, abc 7 news. >> this all began quite peaceful. jobina was in oakland and described the scene there. >> reporter: everyone is moving alongside the streets, the crowds down here at 12th and broadway. i have to say for putting this all together today, so many people are here. everyone has on their masks. people are even trying to social distance themselves as we move down the road. people are emotional. they want to make sure that their message is heard, and i think that it's definite ly

continuing to grow, people of all anal, all walks of life, coming down here from all over the east bay to oakland to be here for this moment in history really. and it's not clear exactly where the crowd is marching to, moving down the streets in oakland right now. and i'm seeing on the ground what you all are seeing right now. a lot of people heard about this on social media. it spread pretty quickly, that 8:00 would be the start time for this. as far as why people are here, i think black people, brown people, allies are all deeply frustrated and hurt by what they've been seeing across the country, not just with george floyd, and it's reached a breaking point. this is generations of issues that have gone on and not been addressed and now it's all coming to a head. yeah, people are cheering. people are happy. people are outside of their cars, supporting the movement, honking their horns as we continue down the road. the crowd is getting toward the

square and the crowd is specifically saying our street. listen in for a minute. [ crowd chanting ] >> clashed with police after shutting down highway 101 last night. that demonstration started out as a peaceful protest but tensions ran high. a standoff at one point, you saw a protester charge at officers -- another place, sorry. that was individuvideo on the hf bashing cars. officers started -- there was an exchange and clash between some of the police and protesters. some of the officers grabbed the man and took him into custody. san jose police chief eddie garcia took to twitter to address the protests saying, quote, we will not tolerate

lawlessness. and there was one major incident during the protest in san jose. several videos, including this one here posted on social media, showing an suv barreling through a crowd of protesters at 6th and santa clara streets downtown. the person in the video appears to be okay, but we don't know the extent of any injuries. this video was posted around 9:20 last night. sheriff's office says at 9:00 in the same intersection, a deputy was involved in the shooting. they did not say if this was connected to the car or provide any further details. the deputy is okay but again this is something we will continue to dig into and provide updates as we get them. police and protesters faced off. his report from the streets as he was on the air yesterday afternoon. >> here is a new thing, somebody that's happening right now. people are taking a knee. probably 40 people right now taking a knee right in front of the officers. >> we don't have that shot yet

on sky 7. yes, now we see it. >> we see it. >> we've got it. we see it. >> reporter: so the protesters have decided best to take a knee and not move. you have probably 30 people right in front of you and then behind the officers you have another, i'm guessing, 60 people also taking a knee, shouting "i can't breathe." >> it has definitely escalated some. i've got to say when you're feet away from a flash bang grenade, it will get your attention. that's just what happened a few seconds ago. you can see a guy on the ground here. we've got to clear out a little bit. you see there's another flash bang grenade. they are definitely -- police are escalating their response. they are taking more extreme measures to clear the protesters away. the protesters have picked up

some of the tear gas, throwing it back at the police, going back and forth. like i say now, they're throwing tear gas in all different directions, over my head, down the street. the protesters are taking the tear gas canisters and throwing them back at the police officers. that is the sound of a flash bang grenade. that will do a very good job of clearing it out. my eyes are now burning from the tear gas. wow! >> sorry, dan. i've had that happen to me before. it's no fun. don't rub your eyes. it makes it worse, as you know. >> reporter: yeah, yeah. it's interesting. tey aren't just going out at the protesters right in front of them. they are firing off to the side over our heads as well. i just want to talk a little bit about what may have been the tipping point.

whoa! that's a -- >> fire works. >> reporter: serious flash bang grenade now, dan. dan, i don't know if you can see this now, but there are protesters who are taking newspaper stands. >> yes, i was seeing that. it's like a barricade. >> reporter: the police are firing on them right now. >> yes. >> reporter: the police are firing the projectiles. now these are not live rounds but they're firing projectiles at the people who have taken a car and it looks like it's a -- whoa! it looks like it's a car they've outfitted before. there's a protest sign on the back of it. >> very dramatic reporting from dan noyse. a san jose police officer was injured. you can see he's lying underneath the car, but he is moving. and then three fellow officers, and it appears a bystander dragged that officer to safety. wow! around 7:30 last night, handful

that in a few minutes, but speaking of emeryville and the east bay, we have been following along a night of protests in oakland over the death of george floyd. that is something that we have been following this morning. nationwide, protesters have taken to the streets over the death of george floyd. the former minneapolis police officer at the center of this is now facing third-degree murder charges. prosecutors are investigating if the other former officers involved will also face charges. abc news reporter karina mitchell has the details. >> reporter: another night of outrage and violence in minneapolis, following a black man dying while being pinned to the ground by a white police officer. 500 national guard soldiers deployed. an 8:00 curfew in place but crowds still on the street. >> the situation is incredibly dangerous. we, as a city, can be so much better than this.

there is no honor in burning down your city. >> reporter: all of this hours after former officer derek chauvin was arrested and charged with the murder of george floyd. >> please, please, i can't breathe. please, man. please. >> reporter: this video, sparking national outrage, showing chauvin digging his knee into floyd's neck while handcuffed. >> not resisting arrest or nothing. >> reporter: prosecutors say the defendant had his knee on mr. floyd's neck for 8:46 in total, 2:53 of this was after mr. floyd was nonresponsive. >> former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin has been charged by the county attorney's office with murder and with manslaughter. we are in the process of continuing to review the evidence there may be subsequent charges later. >> reporter: abc affiliate kspt

was there as floyd's girlfriend reacts to charges. >> this is a piece of justice, first piece, and it needed to -- it needed to be done. >> reporter: other officers involved in floyd's arrest, thomas lane and jay alexander kung, were fired. >> they're under investigation. i anticipate charges. >> reporter: following those charges, nationwide protest continued last night. these protests in atlanta and these in houston. in washington, d.c., at the white house, the lapd declaring all of downtown los angeles an unlawful assembly, following repeated acts of violence and property damage. and this was the scene here in new york. floyd's family says through a lawyer they want to see chauvin face first-degree murder charges. they also want to see the other officers involved arrested. karina mitchell, abc news, new

york. a police officer in louisville, kentucky, fired pepper bullets at a news crew reporting live on a protest. take a look. [ screaming ] >> reporter: i'm getting shot. rubber bullets. rubber bullets. it's okay. it's those pepper bullets. they just shot me in the shin. at us. like directly at us. directly at us. why? i don't know. we are behind their line. >> the reporter and crew for wabe are okay. the bullets are being used to disperse people that have been protesting for two days now. it's unclear why they were being directed toward a reporter and her crew. spokesperson for the louisville police has since apologized and said, quote, it's not our intention to target the media as they are reporting this. this, after a cnn reporter was arrested. and at the cnn headquarters

in atlanta, the building was damaged. spray painted messages on the building and a car was set on fire before the scene was cle cleared. in new york city, violent protests continue there. this is what it looked like at barclay center there in brooklyn. destroyed and burned police cars last night and several people were arrested. more than 100 protesters were detained outside barclay center for throwing bottles and other disturbances. about a dozen officers were hurt in the clashes with demonstrators. one person is dead after shots were fired into a shot of protesters in detroit. no officers were involved. hundreds of people, though, took over the streets there and police have made several arrests as well. and for the second night in a row, protesters in denver, colorado, took to the streets again. they made their way to the state capital and then to the downtown area. and in oregon, protests in

portland have led to the mayor to declare a state of emergency. there is now curfew ending at 6:00 a.m. this morning and starting up again tonight at 8:00. a state of emergency in portland. a lot going on. protests across the country. that's just a handful of some of the cities we've seen protests in overnight. let's switch gears for a moment ago. we are expecting rain this morning. lisa, i know you're tracking the thunder and the lightning, which both of us saw on our drives in this morning. >> it was pretty wild, wasn't it? >> yeah. >> we certainly used the wipers. the pavement was wet. i had that smell, it's raining somewhere, even if it's not right in front of us. we have a system that will be with us throughout the day today. and the most activity we'll see is in the next couple of hours toward sunrise. live look here. check out all those thunderbolts. it is amazing how much lightning, i should say, is out there right now. as we continue a little closer to home as we get into the north

bay, check out sea ranch right along highway 101, over toward geyserville and further south. our sweep on top of mt. st. hellena. and looking at the lightning bolts here down through santa rosa. looks like some wet weather. certainly hearing the thunder, rumbles of thunder if you're not seeing the lightning. not a whole lot of rain out there. as we look at this radar and satellite perspective, wow, it is certainly impressive, isn't it? as we go through the next several hours, you can clearly pick out the low here, that counterclockwise circulation. this all lifts up to the north. as it does, most of the activity will be in extreme northern california. we'll get the chance of some showers, isolated thunderstorm throughout the day today. mild weather with those southerly winds at 61 degrees in fremont, 67 in oakland. 59 in santa rosa. a level one on our storm impact

scale for scattered showers, gusty south winds and the possibility of thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. as we look live outside, you can see the cloud cover here. looking at this possibility of unsettled weather through about 3:00, 4:00. the main activity throughout the morning hours, that low lifts to the north. the showers will be ending throughout the day today. looking at that warmer pattern. in fact, our inland valleys getting really warm by the middle of the upcoming workweek. as we look at our wind profile, it is certainly breezy out there. 9:00, up to 20 miles an hour at the coast. by 2:00, it's about 10 to 20-mile-an-hour winds. gusts higher than that throughout the day. here is a look at what you can expect throughout the morning hours. 6:00, some showers here. doesn't look too impressive, does it, through the afternoon? peeks of sun in the east bay, in the south bay. and looking at the rest of the activity, quieting down. rainfall amounts throughout the

this morning, backlash over president trump. his explanation? he didn't know the history of the phrase. presidential candidate joe biden offering his own message to the nation. good morning, everyone. we have much more on the race against coronavirus in a moment and on the death of george floyd and the protests that have sparked across the country in the past few days. we're going to start this half hour if you're just joining us

with a look at the weather because we are tracking that thunder and lightning, lisa. >> certainly a light show out there this morning. if you're not seeing it, maybe you're hearing it. as we look at our storm impact scale, it is a level one today. light system bringing showers, a chance of a thunderstorm and check out this radar. it is unbelievable how much lightning there is to the north of us. as we go in closer around the coast in cloverdale, plenty of lightning strikes there around our sweep. mt. st. helena. looking further south, a few areas of light scattered showers from vallejo, highway 29 and highway 12. otherwise the rest of you, east bay to south bay. that could change. 67 in oakland. 63 in san jose. we're mild this morning thanks to the southerly winds. as we look towards 10:00, there are showers around. we're in the 60s. could see some scattered showers

or thunderstorm throughout the afternoon. they'll become more isolated. the main activity will be throughout the morning hours and then we'll look for a much quieter sunday. details on that. and a warm-up for some of you coming your way in a few minutes. liz? >> lisa, thank you. president trump facing outrage over his tweets after using the phrase "when the looting starts, the shooting starts." the president sharing he did not know the history of that phrase. former vice president joe biden offered his own message to the nation and his reaction to the pesident's words. abc news chief white house correspondent jonathan carl with the details. >> thank you very much. thank you. >> reporter: president trump called a press conference, but he abruptly walked out without saying a single word about the growing of anger over the death of george floyd. with the streets of minneapolis ablaze, he seemed to call for violence, tweeting "these thugs are dishonoring the memory of george floyd and i won't let that happen." he said the military was ready

adding, quote, any difficulty and we will assume control, but when the looting starts, the shooting starts. and with that, the president echoed a phrase with a racist past. one used in the late 1960s by miami's then police chief who called for violence against african-american rioters. the president also took aim at minneapolis' mayor, calling him the very weak radical left mayor jacob frey. mayor responded in a middle-of-the-night news conference. >> weakness is pointing your finger at somebody else during a time of crisis. donald trump knows nothing about the strength of minneapolis. we are strong as hell. >> reporter: twitter declared the president's tweet about shooting looters a violation of its rule against glorifying violence. the president tried to get around that by posting the same words on the white house's official twitter account. twitter marked that tweet, too. meanwhile, joe biden addressed the country with live remarks

from his home, saying he had spoken to george floyd's family. >> we see plainly that we're a country with an open wound and none of us can turn away. none of us can be silent. none of us can -- any longer can we hear the words "i can't breathe" and do nothing. >> biden then condemned the preside president's tweets. >> you know, this is no time for incendiary tweets. it's no time to encourage violence. this is a national crisis. we need real leadership right now. >> reporter: former president obama also weighed in saying, quote, for millions of americans being treated differently on account of race is tragically, painfully, maddeningly normal. adding that the country needed to move on to, quote, a new normal in which the legacy of bigotry and unequal treatment no longer affects our institutions or our hearts. the current president finally spoke to the cameras, saying he, too, had talked to the family of

george floyd. >> well, i just expressed my sorrow. that was just a horrible thing to witness and to watch. and it would certainly look like there was no excuse for it. >> reporter: jonathan carl, abc news, the white house. floyd's death was the first thing governor gavin newsom talked about yesterday during his briefing after updating us. the governor got emotional when sharing how his young children reacted to individuvideo of the. abc news reporter has that story. >> reporter: in a unique daily briefing, governor gavin newsom started with sharing a personal story of how his kids learned about the death of george floyd. his 10-year-old daughter sharing a video on tiktok. >> she was tearing up because she knew it was wrong. my son, 8 years old, said it's not just wrong, dad. it's worse than wrong, he said, because bad people are supposed to be bad, but good people are supposed to be good. that's what makes this wrong. >> reporter: a solemn start to a

typically busy briefing, but this time the governor's message focused on addressing racism dividing our country. >> i don't have to raise my kids like my friends' kids are raised and so many other millions of americans' kids are raised. if you're in a car, pull over, put your hands on the wheel. not to go out with a hoodie on. >> reporter: it didn't take long for that discussion of race to transition to covid-19. the issues of race, the issues of racism, the issues are a big part of the real work that we have in front of us as it relates to addressing the issue of public health, public safety and economic growth. >> reporter: the governor clearly highlighting how covid is disproportionately affecting minorities and how testing should be diverse across the state. >> the number of deaths substantially higher in the black community and the

african-american community. it's a point to highlight. and it's an incredibly important point about the structural challenges that we have as a state and a nation. >> reporter: while these trends are visibly similar across the nation, it doesn't mean the response to address them will be universal. >> each county has a little bit of a different story from vermont to virginia. and nobody would expect vermont and virginia to behave the same. they aren't. >> reporter: neither is any county in california, but as a state, we are making progress in testing capacity, contact tracing and access to personal protective equipment. >> we bought time. we bent this curve. in fact, we didn't bend it. we never allowed that curve to take off like other parts of this country. >> reporter: stephanie ciara, abc 7 news. >> as this country tries to reopen amid this pandemic, the cdc is out with important guidance as well as a new and alarming projection as to where

the death toll could go. >> reporter: new york rolling out its road map for reopening the city. >> reopening to a new normal. it's a safer normal. people will be wearing masks. people will be socially distanced. >> reporter: starting june 8th, stores can reopen for curbside pickup along with nonessential construction and manufacturing. up to 400,000 workers could be back on the job. >> we are trying to get subways and buses to be as clean and safe as possible. really, really imperfect situation. >> reporter: in boston where offices are starting to reopen tuesday, trains and buses disinfected. the number of riders will be limited. >> i think it's a real concern. i don't know how they're going to implement certain things but i think they should, because i'm always like smushed next to people. >> reporter: in los angeles county, a green light for hair salons and restaurants to reopen with limited in-person dining, effective immediately. >> this is like the honor system because we're all in this

together. >> reporter: many americans now looking to travel safely this summer. rv sales and rentals soaring. >> who knows what the new normal is going to be, and we feel we'll be safe and sound. we'll only have to get out to get gas. >> reporter: the cdc now out with guidance for summer travel, cautioning road trips come with risks because of stops along the way. travel on planes, trains and buses a challenge for social distancing and for those staying at campgrounds. risks at picnic areas and at trails. the cdc adding staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from getting sick. a new pronl projection the death toll could pass 150,000 by june 20th. cases of the virus rising in 14 states. hot spots flaring in places like montgomery, alabama. >> our hospitals are just flooded with coronavirus patients, in particular in the intensive care units. every day our unit beds are

happening today in the east bay, graduating seniors are throwing the students a special ceremony in the midst of the

coronavirus pandemic. a cruise into the sunset parade for pittsburg high school and black diamond high school seniors. parents are decorating their cars and the seniors will wear their cap and gown. it starts at 6:00 this evening at the pittsburg marina. all right, lisa of the rain this weekend, you're saying? >> just a little but what we're seeing is pretty dynamic in lightning and hearing rumbles of thunder. here in santa cruz, it is 59 degrees. high notice 60s. you could see a couple hundredths as well. not a whole lot being put down by showers and thunderstorms, but we could see some interesting lightning out there over the hills. we'll detail it for you and talk about another warming trend. it's not going to be for everyone. that's coming up. >> thanks, lisa. also ahead, shining bright. how an artist is sharing his love for neon

doppler 7 in a moment. you can see all those lightning strikes. go golden gate bridge, you see the clouds, hazy skies. we certainly have wet pavement out there. winds are breezy, accompanying an area of low pressure. most of the activity will happen this morning toward sunrise and then after sunrise, things will begin to quiet down. we're not eliminating the chance of showers or thunderstorms. you can see the winds up to 20 miles an hour through the next few hours. and they really dialed back throughout the day as this area of low pressure moves away from the bay area. we are certainly looking at some inclement weather and some showers. used my wipers this morning out there and definitely could see some activity as we get towards the afternoon hours. look at all the lightning strikes toward i-5. closer to home, middletown, around clear lake. as we widen the view, not a lot is happening to the south of the north bay. bt as we look at the big picture, it's incredible, isn't it? look at all those lightning strikes from the sierra nevada, last night, this morning.

extreme northern california. a few of these slipping down into the north bay. here is the area of low pressure. you can see that quite defined offshore. this is going to lift to the north. as it does, we'll begin to see the possibility of some showers over the higher elevations, a thunderstorm. but most of the activity, it's not going to be a whole lot out there. we're going to be in the vicinity of the showers, a thunderstorm throughout the day today. here is a look at walnut creek with all the clouds stacked up. it is 62 in san francisco, 67 in oakland. quite mild. 63 in redwood city, san jose. pacifica is at 60. a look at sfo, where it's pretty quiet. cloudy, 59. petaluma. so with that area of low pressure offshore, the thunderstorms around, it's a level one system with the scattered showers, gusty southerly winds. higher elevations certainly could see thunderstorms throughout the afternoon. there's our roof camera. through the morning hours, sunrise till about now, 8:00,

9:00, we're seeing the activity. and throughout the afternoon, a warmer pattern arrives. wait till you see the temperatures inland by the middle part of the week. here is a look at the pattern throughout the day today with the cloud cover. the showers here on and off. this is 9:00. then we've got some sun in the east bay, the south bay, clouds in the north bay, the breezy winds and still a possibility of a few thunderstorms. in terms of our temperatures, we warm up on monday, we're back to some sunshine. look at tuesday. mid 90s inland. by wednesday, once again, flirting with 100 inland. cooler by the coast. with that rain we could see a tenth of an inch in some spots. less than that around concord. down to ben loman. here is that level one system. pretty interesting for the morning hours. looking at partly cloudy skies on monday. here comes the warming trend. it's really going to be significant inland tuesday and
