okay, so we're kicking off our new series, "dollar dinner challenge," where we put a chef to the test to make two meals for four people for under 20 bucks. >> that's right. we're saving money for everybody. we want to help keep our viewers on a budget during these difficult times. so this morning, we're
8:49 am
challenging the host of the "starving for attention" and "food court" podcasts, chef richard blais, and we're asking him how low you can go. he joins us now from his home in san diego, california. richard, it is so great to have you on this morning. good to see you. i understand that you have two meals for us that you've come up with. tell us about the ingredients that we need for those. >> that's right, two meals, four people, under 20 bucks. we're doing a breakfast and a dinner. we're making bagels and pizza and you're going to need some yogurt, some flour, a can of tomatoes and maybe some cheese. minimal ingredients. lots of flavor and for not a lot of money. so i'm going to start right off the bat by talking about how you can make bagels at home. and this is a very simple dough recipe. what i've done is i've combined equal parts yogurt and self-rising flour to make this dough right here. this is how i'll make my bagel dough. you don't need yeast. you don't need to start a mother dough. you can make this in five minutes and get bagels on the
8:50 am
table in less than 30 minutes. and what i'm going to do, i roll out the dough right here on my board and i make sort of a nice sort of -- a little roll. then i just roll that into itself to make a bagel shape. again, this is yogurt and self-rising flour. the self-rising flour enables us to get some rise because there's baking powder in it so we don't need any yeast. and then very simply i'm going to brush my bagels with a little bit of -- you can use butter at home or i'm just using one egg that's been whipped up. a little egg wash and then because i'm a native new yorker, i'm going to go everything spice. i just feel like to me that's what a bagel is. and then i just pop that right into the oven. you see up here these are the bagels. they were made and baked all within 30 minutes, we got four bagels. there's some cream cheese over there. but, wait, there's more, crew. we can take that same dough and
8:51 am
we can basically roll it out to make pizza, so we'll make two types of pizza. we're going to roll out the dough. i par baked one right here. what i'm going to do is make tomato sauce. this is something you can buy in the store and it's very expensive. all you have to do is buy a can of tomatoes. pop it into a food processer or just even crush it up with a fork. it's an onion, tomato and a little bit of dried herbs, okay, dried herbs, you know, they usually don't -- they get a bad rap. i don't know why. just a little bit of dried basil right into the tomato sauce and that's pizza sauce, that's classic pizza sauce. now, can you make the classic pie. everybody loves that. my kids love that. but i'm going to take this to the next level. i'm going to make a barbecue pizza, okay. so i am going to replace the tomato sauce for this recipe with richard blais coffee barbecue sauce because i'm shameless, and it's saturday.
8:52 am
but this is going to add a lot of flavor. it's going to be smoky, a little bit of sweet. most barbecue sauces also have lots of tomato so it's not a far stretch to use it as a replacement for tomato sauce. and then i'm going to top it with rotisserie chicken, a little bit of cheddar cheese, some cilantro if you have it. we pop that into the oven and you can see over here we have both of our pizzas, tomato and our barbecue chicken pizza. two meals. >> looks delicious. >> for four people. >> time to review the grocery list, and let's see if richard made his meals for under $20. >> okay. >> and the grand total is -- [ drum roll ] >> -- $19.23. well done. well done. >> we did it, crew. >> we did it. richard, thank you so much. i like the pizza bagel idea. i used to live on those in college. >> he has 75 cents left over. don't spend it all in one place. >> that's right. all right. thank you, richard. appreciate it.
