now from abc 7, live breaking news. and that breaking news is in san francisco. sky 7 over the city right now, you see protesters there on the move. they started around noon with a rally outside city hall. this follows protests in oakland last night that ended in vandalis vandalism. >> we have severe damage, the whole showroom floor pretty much was destroyed last night. >> the protests in bay area cities are in solidarity with those across the country we've seen and in minneapolis where now former police officer has

been charged in the murder of george floyd. the officer was caught on camera kneeling on floyd's neck for several minutes. floyd later died. we have team coverage across the bay area of the response to last night's protests. we begin with abc 7 news reporter luz pena tracking the current protest you were saying in san francisco. >> the bay area woke up to shattered glass, looted businesses and protesters began to gather peaceful at u.n. plaza across from city hall. let me show you this video, after two hours waiting for the crowd to grow protesters began to move to market street while chanting "no justice, no peace" and, quote, "say his name, george floyd." with police officers following protests with motorcycles and blocking side streets. in this next video we can see how protesters began to turn from peaceful to violent when officers were getting in their vehicle away from this crowd when at one point we can see an

officer pointing a nonlethal weapon to the crowd as they drive away, a protester comes out of nowhere from the side of the frame and throws an object that looks like a rock, breaking the back window of this police patrol. now, around 4:00 p.m. the crowd made their way to harrison street just blocks away from the entrance of the bay bridge where police officers were waiting for them in a line blocking the entrance to the freeway. that's where we got several videos from viewers stuck in their cars as they saw protesters vandalizing the google shine while shouting chants like "say his name, george floyd." now, what we're seeing right now through sky 7 is a crowd moving through fifth and harrison, initially they were headed towards the offramp of the bay bridge but a line of those san francisco police officers was blocking them from getting on the freeway. we have not seen any damage or storefronts destroyed at this point, for the most part it's been peaceful. we will continue to update you here and on our website abc7news.com. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc 7

news. >> something we will of course continue to follow, many thanks. a block of oakland's chinatown is filled with shattered glass and spray painted windows. a family-owned pharmacy and a cricket phone store are among the line of businesses looted and vandalized last night in chinatown. oakland police have released a preliminary informational report about other incidents at last night's demonstrations. to the numbers here, 60 looters were detained for further investigation, 18 people were arrested by oakland police, four people arrested by outside agencies, six oakland officers were injured, seven officers from outside agencies were injured. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard joins us now from oakland with a look at more of the aftermath. cornell? >> reporter: we have been all over downtown oakland today. the damage is extensive and remarkable. we came from a news conference

with mayor libby schaaf she said 70 local businesses were targeted and damaged and she says the violence must stop. >> i'm very saddened and sickened to talk about the events of last night. >> reporter: mayor libby staff stood alongside oakland business owners appealing for calm and denouncing violence friday night. >> we are sickened to wake up this morning to the destruction and the violence of our beloved oakland. and we want to make clear that this will not be tolerated. >> reporter: a sea of shattered glass covers much of downtown oakland. the cleanup almost overwhelming, businesses big and small were targeted by vandals. the demonstration began peacefully on friday to protest the death of george floyd while in police custody in minneapolis. but it quickly changed. fires were set and windows smashed. vandals set fire to a car inside the showroom at mercedes benz of

oakland. the service manager says seven cars heavily damaged. >> we're already struggling with all the coronavirus that's going on, you know, the business doesn't need this. >> reporter: windows were smashed at this walgreens store, looters rushed in to grab what they could. the chase bank across the street had its windows smashed along with dozens of other storefronts. check out this target store on broadway, it was trashed. suspected looters were still inside on saturday morning until police arrived. >> to me it's sickening. it's sad. >> reporter: oakland resident homer stafford was upset about the damage and the message sent by some protesters. >> all these cops not racist cops, you know, we've got a lot of racism, we're going to live with it the rest of our lives, but, come on, man, enough is enough. >> reporter: we found graff graf the front of the bar. >> most of the time it's not people who are from oakland,

it's people coming in taking advantage of the situation that is completely super serious right now. >> reporter: the damage estimates could be in the millions. mayor schaaf had a message for anyone considering coming out tonight to cause damage, possible harm. she says stay home. just in case, police are preparing for more obl protests this evenings here in oakland. live in oakland, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much for that. governor newsom is responding to the protests last night. he said today, quote, we have seen millions of people lift their voice in anger, rightfully outraged at how systemic racism is allowed to persist. every person who has raised their voice should be heard. he want on to thank everyone who helped protect human life including law enforcement. the golden state warriors with their deep ties to oakland also released this statement today saying we condemn in no uncertain terms racism and violence perpetrated against members of the black community and we call on all people to

channel their justifiable anger into creating a more just and equitable society. the deadly shooting of a federal police officer in oakland is being called an act of domestic terrorism and we're learning new information about the investigation into whether it's related to last night's protests. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez joins us now live with the latest. lauren? >> reporter: eric, senior dhs official told abc news that the shooting involving two federal protective service officers and the overnight protests are related, but the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. the fbi says one federal officer was shot and killed, the other was injured. now, this happened at the federal building off clay street in oakland around 9:45 last night. the fbi says that a car pulled up to the building and started iring at the contract security officers. now, today in washington the department of homeland security said this is an act of domestic terrorism. >> let me be clear.

when someone targets a police officer or a police station with an intention to do harm and intimidate, that is an act of domestic terrorism. >> it's likely that there was a targeting of uniformed officers to the extent with which they were involved with our demonstration we're really not sure. >> reporter: now, the fbi is working with the oakland police department on this investigation. now, federal protective service officers usually protect federal buildings so oftentimes you will see them in front of court houses and government buildings. reporting live from oakland, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> lauren, thanks. now, in the south bay protesters clashed with police after shutting down highway 101. several people were taken into custody in downtown san jose. the demonstration started out peaceful but some people on the freeway as you can see here had their windows smashed. today san jose mayor sim

liccardo said if those protests continue stay home for your safety. he said, quote, despite peaceful intentions of most protesters, a few seek violence and destruction of our city. mayor sam liccardo joined volunteers cleaning up graffiti today. they were at horace mann elementary school on santa clara street. some volunteers were out as early as 5:00 a.m. >> we had a few protesters from last night join us who said, hey, we want to show this wasn't what the protest is about. we are part of this community and we don't like seeing this happen, either. >> the mayor also recognized a community member who said he couldn't help because he was on his way to work, but he did drop off pizzas for the volunteers. as the bay area braces for protests this week, we are also taking a look at the demonstrations across the country. from minneapolis to l.a. and beyond, and the president's response to it all. and diving deeper into race relations during this tumultuous time, a professor weighs in on

once again back live. let's take a look from sky 7 this vantage point of the protest march through san francisco. you can see right now they are quite disbursed making their way in one direction. we have been following this situation for hours now. where at one point there were law enforcement officials blocking off the highway, preventing what appeared to be several hundred of them from entering the freeway. we will stay on top of this and dip in once again in a few minutes. there have been demonstrations in cities across the country following the death of george floyd. hundreds gathering here in los angeles, a city under curfew to protest the 46-year-old black man's death in police custody.

andrew dem bert has details on the heart of the protest in minneapolis. >> reporter: protests continued this weekend in cities across the country following the death of george floyd while in police custody. the outrage ee lupted after derek chauvin the white former minneapolis police officer was seen in this difficult to watch video of floyd's arrest. according to prosecutors the defendant had his knee on mr. floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total, two minutes and 53 seconds of this was after mr. floyd was nonresponsive. police have trained that this type of restraint with a subject in a prone position is inherently dangerous. three other officers involved in the arrest, thao, lane and and d you think were also fired and could still face charges. >> the outrage of our national community about what happened to george floyd in minneapolis is real and legitimate. accountability for his death

must be addressed and is being addressed. >> reporter: minneapolis under a mandatory curfew, but officials say they don't have the resources to contain the protests. the minnesota national guard is now being fully mobilized and the pentagon saying active duty army military police units are now under prepare to deploy orders for minneapolis. overnight at least 150 people arrested in new york city as protesters clashed with police. protests continuing today in austin, indianapolis and denver. in wilmington, delaware, police headquarters surrounded. and in philadelphia hundreds flocking to city hall where they kneeled for nine minutes in memory of floyd. andrew dim bert, abc news, washington. we talked to a cal state east bay professor who said the violent in these protests is sometimes a manifestation of the frustration protesters are feeling. >> if you look at the -- the the

beforehand of peaceful protesting, police officers are using rubber bullets, they are hosing people down. that's for a peaceful protest and you are not being heard. so how -- it's a frustration. how else are you going to get your point across that this is not okay. so you resort to this idea of we have to be louder. if they are going to push back, we're going to push back also. >> dr. lee teaches in the political science department and her focus is on the political participation of minority communities. the sonoma county sheriff has said he will not enforce the county's health order. >> up next, the response from the district attorney's office who says the sheriff's views is at odds with other agencies. and i'm meet just drew tuma. a rather stormy day across the bay area, numerous thunderstorms popped up. we will take a loo our house was built in 1926.

let's get you the latest news now on the coronavirus. memorial day weekend partier in the ozarks has tested positive for covid-19. health officials in missouri say the person visited a bar and grill and entered a pool. meantime, governor andrew cuomo has set new york city's reopening date for june 8th. this is citing tremendous progress. locally san mateo and marin county will open more businesses monday as phase two progresses. outdoor retail, office space and

outdoor dining opening in marin county, while churches, retail stores and beaches will open with restrictions in san mateo county. the sonoma county sheriff maintains that he will not enforce the county's health order. he says come monday his deputies will only educate the public. earlier this week the public health officer halted further reopening of the economy because of coronavirus outbreaks at three workplaces. the sonoma county da's office says the sheriff's position is at odds with other law enforcement agencies and that charging decisions lie with the da. the office released a statement saying, quote, we are tired, scared and worried, but we are resilient and we must be vigilant rather than arguing about rules and orders, let's keep the focus on saving lives. graduation celebrations continued across the bay area this weekend. a graduation parade was held yesterday for the 2020 graduates of acolains high school in lafayette. it will take a unique format

because of social distancing. all diploma presentations will be recorded in advance and then played while families will be invited to attend portions of the socially distanced ceremony. if you went outside today you were likely to have been rained on, drew tuma. >> yeah, guys, it was a stormy morning and afternoon, especially in the east bay, just a few hoursing a. let's show you live doppler 7 right now, what we're dealing with a lot of storms have really pushed off towards sacramento right now but i do want to press into alameda and contra costa county. around san ramon, walnut creek, livermore, danville, concord, we had a couple thunderstorms pop up and just slowly trail to the north. a lot of folks saw lightning, heard thunder, we saw small hail as well and some quick downpours so heavy rain associated with those storms. thankfully that has quieted down in the east bay. just a couple light sprinkles

around mt. hamilton at this hour. in the north bay we did have a cell over lake berryessa that has dwindled to a light sprinkle and that is moving into the central valley. i want to take you back to early this morning at around 3:30 in the morning. look at how many lightning describes we had around the bay area, nearly 150 lightning strikes at that hour, in fact, a lot of you were telling me on social media between, say, 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. you saw lightning, you heard thunder, that woke you up, and it's all because of an area of low pressure that is pushing into northern california as we speak. we're pretty much rain cooled in most cities, down into the 60s in a lot of spots, rain cooled 68 in concord right now, the same in san jose, 66 in santa rosa the city, down to 62 degrees. live doppler 7 along with satellite, look at the numerous lightning strikes that have occurred around the bay area and northern california over the past 24 hours as that area of low pressure just spins on shore

kind of instigating the atmosphe atmosphere, creating that instability and thunder showers to pop up. the good news as we advance the clock into this evening it is much quieter. by 7:00 p.m. any rain is light, we expect dry conditions as we head towards midnight tonight. overnight tonight we will hang on to a lot of cloud cover, we're drying out, it's muggy and it's mild. temperatures only in the low to mid 50s, tomorrow is a much calmer day but we will hang on to mostly cloudy skies and temperatures mainly in the low 60s to upper 70s. so highs tomorrow it will be a dry end to the weekend, breezy along the coast, 65 in the city, 69 in oakland, 75 in san jose, about 78 for antioch. the accuweather seven-day forecast a couple of days with that cloud cover and then we track a really brief warm up, nowhere near as intense as last week, but you look at wednesday and beyond and it is warm to hot. much cooler air rushes in and by
