oakland where protesters were on the move for a time on friday and only the situation escalated throughout the night. we know in san francisco there was also a protest that started around noon and has continued throughout the day. we recap the situation where cities across the country are showing their solidarity in the form of protests where an officer was charged the murder of george floyd. that officer seen kneeling on floyd's neck for several minutes. floyd later died. >> we have coverage now across the bay area to the protests last night. and again a reminder there are protests going on right now. we begin with abc 7 news reporter luce penna. >> the bay area woke up to shattered glass. in san francisco protesters began to gather peacefully across from city hall after

about 2 hours way frg the crowd to grow protesters began to move to market street while chanting no peace and no justice and say his name george floyd with police officers following protesters on motorcycles and blocking side streets. in this next video sikh see how protesters began to turn from peaceful to violent when officers were getting in their vehicle away from the crowd. even at one point we can see an officer pointing a nonlethal weapon to the crowd. a protester comes out from the side of the frame and throws an object that looks like a rock breaking the black window of this police patrol. in this third video around 4:00 p.m. the crowd made their way to harrison street just blocks from the entrance of the bay bridge where police officers were waiting for them in line blocking the entrance to the freeway. that's where we got several videos from viewers stuck in their cars as they saw protesters vandalizing the google sign and while shouting chants, like say his name,

george floyd. we also spoke to the president of the san francisco branch of the naacp about these protests. >> be smart and by burning down your communities. an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth philosophy will leave us all eyeless and toothless. somebody's got to say enough is enough. and i will say to the young people and all the people upset, if you're upset make it make iti register and vote. >> reporter: protesters are now kneeing outside the san francisco mission district police department. we have not seen any damage or store fronts destroyed at this point. for the most part it's been

peaceful. we'll continue to update you here on and on website. in to the newsroom, luce pena, abc 7 news. >> a block is filled with shattered glass and spray painted windows. a family owned pharmacy and a cricket phone store are along the line of businesses looted and vandalized last night in china town. oakland police are released preliminary information about other incidents at last night's demonstrations. take a look at the numbers here. 60 looters were detained for further investigation. 18 people were arrested by oakland police. four were agencies. abc 7 reporter cornell bernard in oakland with a look at the aftermath and right there that boarded up storefront. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, you're right,

dion. we've been all over downtown oakland today. the damage is extensive and really amazing. plywood is everywhere. this is the hyundai dealership along with three other dealerships last night. windows being boarded up across the street. mayor libby shaft says 70 businesses were targeted. she says the violence must stop. >> i'm very saddened and sickened to talk about the events of last night. >> mayor libby shaft stood alongside oakland business leaders appealing for calm and denouncing violence friday night. >> we are sickened to wake up this morning to the destruction and the violence of our beloved oakland. and we want to make clear that this will not be tolerated. >> reporter: a sea of shattered glass covers much of downtown oakland. the cleanup almost overwhelming,

businesses big and small were targeted by vandals. the demonstration began peacefully on friday to protest the death of george floyd while in police custody in minneapolis, but it quickly changed. fires were set and windows smashed. vandals set fire to a car inside the showroom at mercedes-benz of oakland. the owner says seven cars damaged. >> we're already struggling with the coronavirus going on. the business doesn't need this. >> reporter: windows were smashed at this walgreens store. looters rushed in to get they could. suspected looters were still inside on saturday morning until police arrived. >> to me it's sickening, it's sad. >> reporter: oakland resident homer stafford was upset about the damage and the message sent by some protesters.

>> all these cops are not racist cops, you know? we've got a lot of racism, we're going to live with it the rest of our lives, but come on, man. enough is enough. >> reporter: we found these neighbors scraping graffiti off the front of a bar on broadway. they believe the damage was not caused by locals. >> it's people who come in taking advantage of a situation that is completely super serious right now. >> reporter: damage could be in the millions of dollars. mayor shaft says she's urging everyone to stay home tonight. she says police are prepared for more possible demonstrations tonight. police at this point say they have no plans to enact a curfew for the city of oakland. no plans at this point. we're live in oakland cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> thanks a lot. governor newsom is responding to the protest last night. he said today, quote, we've seen millions of people lift their voice in anger rightfully

outraged how systemic racism is lowed to persist. every person who raised their voice should be heard. the golden state warriors even weighing in with their deep ties to oakland. they released this statement today saying we condemn in no uncertain terms racism and violence perpetrated against members of the black community. and we call on all people to channel their justifiable anger into creating a more just and equitable society. the deadly shooting of a federal security officer in oakland is being called an act of domestic terrorism, and we're learning new information about the investigation into whether it's related to last night's protest in oakland. it happened last night right outside a federal building. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez joins us now with the latest. lauren? >> reporter: eric, a senior dhs official told abc news the shooting involving two federal protective service officer and the overnight protests are

related, but the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. now, the fbi says one federal officer was shot and killed, another injured. this happened last night around 9:45 in front of the federal building off clay street. the fbi says a car pulled up to the building and started firing at the contract security officers that stood watch over the protests. now, today in washington the department of homeland security said when a police officer is targeted that is an act of domestic terrorism. the dhs says they're seeing a pattern of people turning peaceful protests into something else. >> we're interested in all groups, all violent groups, all extremist groups that are going to take advantage of individuals exercising their first amendment right to do that peaceful protest and turn it into something else, and that's what we're eseeing. we're seeing a pattern of that and we're very concerned about that. >> we want to express our

condolences to the two federal security agents who were shot at last night, one of whom died. >> reporter: now, the fbi is working with the oakland police department on this investigation. reporting live from oakland lauren martinez, abc 7 news. >> now, abc 7 news has confirmed the identity of the federal officer who was killed. abc 7 i-team reporter dan noise is live with the details for us. dan? >> reporter: eric, in just the past 30 minutes i did get confirmation from both his family and his friends his identity. he is 53-year-old david patrick underwood. he went by patrick to his close friends at work he was underwood. he is from california. he studied at contra costa community college. he went to the high school. his sister late today posted on her facebook page that her brother was murdered in oakland,

california, last night while on duty during the riots. she said this violence must stop. i reached out to several of his coworkers. i reached one russell hoover who told me patrick underwood worked for the same agency about nine years. many years at that federal building in oakland. he was a protected security officer. he told me he was an all around nice person, he liked to enjoy life as much as possible. just laid-back and happy. he said he would do anything for you. patrick underwood worked for it same company for 9 years as a contractor to the federal government. he said we just called him underwood i and again, he said he was such a great guy. the sister was too distraught to actually talk to me persony. she says she will be putting out a statement tomorrow but through a close friend. that friend confirmed to me this is in fact that family's

terrible loss is being felt all around the bay area and in southern california where his sister now lives. david patrick underwood 53 years old who passed away last night after being shot there on the job at the oakland federal building. >> what a senseless killing. we appreciate those details about him and his dan noyes, many thanks. the protests started out as peaceful before the demonstration moved to highway 101 and several drivers as you see here had their windows smashed. the police department says eight patrol cars were also vandalized. one officer was taken to the hospital and several others suffered minor injuries due to rocks and bottles being thrown at them. the san jose mayor said if protests continue today people should stay home for their safety. >> mayor lacardo joined volunteers cleaning up graffiti downtown today.

abc 7 news was at the elementary school on santa clara street. some volunteers were out as early as 5:00 a.m. >> we had a few protesters from last night join us and said, hey, we want to show this wasn't what the protest was about. we're part of this community and we don't like seeing this either. >> the mayor also recognized a community member who said he couldn't help because he was on his way to work but he did drop off pizzas for the volunteers. >> san francisco mayor london breed had a conversation on her facebook page about the murder of george floyd. actor jamie fox spoke about the p protests. >> it continues to go back to there, and hopefully once we can get past this unfortunateness which has to happen, we can now start healing in the way of having rodney speak and say, hey, let's change this language so we can get to a better place.

francisco. what we saw for the most part has been peaceful today with the protests starting at around city hall around the noon hour. they've made their way to 17th and valencia. here we will continue following their path and updating you as the evening progresses. demonstrations in cities across the country following the death of george floyd. you can see hundreds gathering in los angeles, a city that's now under curfew to protest the 46-year-old black man's death while in police custody. abc news reporter has details from the heart of the protest in minneapolis. >> reporter: protests continued this weekend in cities across it country following the death of george floyd while in police custody. the outrage erupted after derek chauvin the white former minneapolis police officer was seen in this difficult to watch video of floyd's arrest. according to prosecutors the defendant had his knee on mr. floyd's neck for 8 minutes, 46 seconds in total.

3 minutes 53 seconds of this was after mr. floyd was nonresponsive. police are trained this type of restraint in the prone position is inherently dangerous. three other officers involved in the arrest were also fired and could still face charges. >> the outrage of our national community about what happened to george floyd in minneapolis is real and legitimate. accountability for his death must be addressed and is being addressed. >> reporter: minneapolis under a mandatory curfew, but officials say they don't have the resources to contain the protests. the minnesota national guard is now being fully mobilized and the pentagon saying active duty army military police yubts are now under prepare to deploy orders for minneapolis. overnight at least 150 people arrested in new york city as protesters clashed with police. protests continuing today.

in austin, indianapolis and denver. in wilmington, delaware, police headquarters surrounded. and in philadelphia hundreds flocking to city hall where they kneeled for nine minutes in memory of floyd. abc news, washington. >> we talked to a cal state east bay professor who said the violence in these protests is something of a manifestation at time of the frustration protesters are feeling. >> if you look at the beforehand of people protesting police officers are using rubber bullets. they are hosing people down. that's for a peaceful protest and you're not being heard. so how -- it's a frustration. how else are you going to get your point across this is not okay, so you resort to this idea of we have to be louder. if they're going to push back, we're going to push back also.

to the latest news news coronavirus outbreak now. a memorial day weekend partier in the ozarks has tested positive for the virus. governor andrew cuomo has sent new york city's reopening date for june 8th citing tremendous progress. and locally san mateo and mirin county will open more businesses monday as a phased progression. outdoor dining opens while churches, stores and beaches will open with restricts in san mateo county.

>> the sonoma county mayor says he will not if force the health ordered. earlier this week the public health officer halted further reopening of the economy because of coronavirus outbreaks at three workplaces. the da's office says the sheriff's position is at odds with other law enforcement agencies and that charging decisions lie with the da. the office released a statement saying, quote, we are tired, scared and worried but we are resilient and we must be vigilant. rather than arguing about rules and orders let's keep the focus on saving lives. >> time now to get a check of the weather with drew tuma forecasting from home. and what a change in the past few days, drew. >> yeah, we went from that record heat to now tracking thunderstorms over the past 24 hours. rather intense especially earlier this morn [then a second round of thunderstorms moved into the east bay this afternoon. live doppler 7 right now is showing you just a cup of light

sprinkles around ucaya. much of the bay area has really quieted down compared to a few hours ago. i want to take you into the east bay. you saw some pretty vicious thunderstorms pop up, yet heavy downpours, numerous lightening strikes, even some small hail reported. thankfully those thunder showers have now departed and moved off to the east, and we are much quieter. we go back even farther in time early this morning, lot of you were telling me on social media between say, 3:00 and 5:00 a.m. you saw lightening strikes, you heard numerous thunder showers. look at 3:30 in the morning. we counted about 140 different lightening strikes happening in just a 15-minute time framemism you can see this morning it was rather active, numerous thunderstorms moved through northern california. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you an area of low pressure that essentially just moved right over the bay

area over the past couple of hours, brought tons of lightening to northern california. thankfully that storm's now pushing off to the north and east. and we will find dryer conditions over the next 24 hours. so out there right now we're at 68 in nevado. and it still feels very humid out there. it is muggy, we still have a lot of moisture in the atmosphere. 68 in fremont, 69 in san jose and palo alto about 72 degrees. future weather showing you later on this evening 7:00 p.m. a couple of light sprinkles around ucaya and that's about it. the cloud cover will hang on but the showers are out of here. we'll call it mostly cloudy out there over the next 12 hours. we are drying out and numbers falling into the low and mid-50s, but it is still muggy out there. and the 12-hour planner on our sunday we'll hang onto mostly sunny skies, temperatures mainly in the low 60s to upper 70s.

abc news consultant is with us. how do you view the situation the way it's unfolding in city after city and the difference between a place of capacity like new york and columbia, south carolina, columbus, ohio, salt lake city -- how do you look at what the challenge is to allow the free exercise of the protests and keep the community safe? >> yeah, terry, as i listen to everybody who was on tonight, we really are in the midst of a perfect storm. we have -- people around the country, young people of color who are understandably upset at what happened with mr. floyd and angry, angry because it's part of a pattern of incidents involving police, people of color that have occurred over the last several years. we are also in the midst of a pandemic, which is disproportionately impacting immigrant and minority

communities, and it's not only impacting them from a health perspectivi perspective, but an economic perspective as it continues its way through the country. we are also hearing from the department of homeland security and others that the federal government -- anti-government extremists, anarchists who see these protests as an opportunity to accelerate their objectives which is to incite racial violence, create a race war amongst our country. we are hearing calls for people to target police and police are reacting to any perceived threat aggressively as one might expect them to do we're even hearing reports that foreign governments like russia may have taken to social media and are seeking to inflame the passion surrounding this debate and
