>> more protests erupt in violence over the death of george floyd. the mayor of san francisco responding to the vandalism with a curfew that goes into effect tonight. the looting continues at businesses that are shut down because of coronavirus. overnight people ran into store after store grabbing anything that they could and running out. good morning everyone, it is sunday, may 31st. i'm liz kreutz. we have much more on the protests overnight here in the bay area. i apologize for that there, we could hear our director for a second. we have the mic open but we know we have a lot to get to this morning with these protests overnight happening here locally and across the country. before we get to that, let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning, lisa. >> liz, good morning to you. hi, everyone. it was kind of exciting yesterday with the thunderstorms, but this morning, much quieter with the cloud cover, and looking at that cloud cover lingering throughout much of the day. starting out with temperatures in the 50s. here is a look at live doppler 7. visibility is okay and as we look out live this morning,

you'll notice that in the south bay, yes, it is pretty gray. 57 san francisco, 56 in san jose. this is santa cruz, mid-50s here, going for a high of about 70 today, with overcast conditions. elsewhere around the bay, upper 50s, popular number with mid-50s in livermore. so we're cooler this morning, anywhere from five to about eight degrees cooler and as we look out towards the south bay, you'll notice that the overcast, it's going to stay with us this morning. it mixes out the low clouds and we have mid and high-level clouds for numbers in the lower 70s inland, 60s around the bay, cool at the coast, breezy late day today and inland valleys staying dry but wonder where we'll see the sun. june starts tomorrow and looking brighter and warmer. details in a few minutes. liz? >> thank you, lisa. san francisco responds to the looting and vandalism. mayor london breed saying the city will start implementing a curfew at 8:00 tonight. >> if you are home, please stay home.

if you are in our city from other places, please go back to the city that you live in. >> people are expected to stay home between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. the national guard is on standby and mayor breed said she understands the anger and frustration people are feeling after the death of george floyd. the unarmed black man who died in police custody in minneapolis but says the violence like you see here at saks fifth avenue in union square in san francisco, that is not the answer. >> what can we do now? how do we come together? how do we mobilize? how do we change things for the better? because i know people are sick and tired of being sick and tired. i'm sick and tired of being sick and tired. >> mayor breed pointed out a protest outside city hall yesterday was peaceful. she says the city will continue to allow peaceful protests. san francisco police chief bill scott also addressed the community last night. take a listen. >> as an african-american man and as the chief of police, i

can relate to what people are feeling. i can relate to it. for the officers that are out there working their behinds off to do a job right now in the most difficult times, in most of their careers, if not our life time, i can relate to that, too. >> chief scott says he understands people feel the need to get out and express themselves and he says officers will do their best to protect peaceful demonstrators, and says violence will not be tolerated. looters targeted several stores here in the bay area. overnight, the action picked up really as the sun went down last night. we saw multiple stores hit in emeryville, including best buy, uniqlo, h&m and several others you're seeing on the map, at the powell street plaza shopping center, also, protesters went there. there are no indications vandals had anything to do with the protest, so that is important to point out as well. look at the video outside the best buy, people can be seen running out with tvs and other

electronic devices in hand. massive looting happening there at the best buy. law enforcement officers arrive later and they did make some arrests. it's unclear how many people were taken into custody. as of right now we're just getting info from opd there were three arrests made overnight by opd. now to the bay street shopping center in emeryville, where people grabbed piles of clothing from h&m and seconds later moved to the store next to it, uniqlo. here in san francisco a peaceful gathering started at noon yesterday. the protest turned from peaceful to violent when officers were getting in their patrol car there away from the crowd, as you can see a tense gathering there of officers, some protesters with signs and then at some point, as this car starts driving away, i'll let it play out so you can see it, a

protester is going to take a rock and throw it at the car. it smashes the back of that police vehicle there. a little bit of a dramatic scene there of course. this next video around 8:30 last night a crowd of protesters on market street. police surrounding the area as looters broke into stores like swarovski crystals and main entrance on the westfield shopping center. other stores like cvs and walgreens along market street were also hit by looters and the stores were initially boarded up maybe because of coronavirus or maybe because of anticipating the protests but it did not stop people from entering and looting. demonstrators in san francisco tell abc 7 news they protested in hopes to see a positive change towards the african-american community and an "end to police brutality." a lot to get to as well. this is very important news, a lot of you are messaging me about it yesterday a federal investigation is under way after that federal officer was shot and killed during the protest in

oakland last night. abc 7 news has learned now the officer has been identified, 53-year-old patrick underwood. he lived in pinole. the shooting happened near the ron dellums federal building near 12th and clay streets. another fbi officer was wounded and investigators are calling it domestic terrorism. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez has more on this story. >> reporter: friends and family are mourning the loss of 53-year-old patrick underwood of pinole, a source confirmed with abc 7 underwood was the federal officer shot and killed friday night. >> an assassin cowardly shot two federal protective service contractors as they stood watch over a protest. >> reporter: the shooting happened at the federal building off clay street in oakland around 9:45. patrick's sister, angela jacobs underwood posted this on facebook "my brother, dave

patrick underwood, a federal officer, was murdered on 5/29/20 in oakland, california, while on duty during the riots. this violence must stop." a friend that knew patrick from middle school tweeted "his name is patrick underwood and he also went by dave. he was a kind, compassionate, empathetic soul with a smile that could light up a room. pat, this world is gonna miss you." a senior dhs official told abc 7 news the shooting of the two officers are related to the protests over george floyd's death, but the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. >> it's likely that there was a targeting of uniformed officers to the extent with which they were involved with our demonstration, we're really not sure. >> reporter: the dhs is calling the deadly shooting an act of domestic terrorism. >> when someone targets a police officer, that is an act of domestic terrorism. >> reporter: federal officials say they're seeing more violence during peaceful protests. >> we're interested in all

groups, all violent groups, all extremist groups that are going to take advantage of individuals exercising their first amendment right to do that peaceful protest, and turning it into something else. >> reporter: lauren martinez, abc 7 news. new video shows oakland police officers setting off flash-bangs and using tear gas to disperse crowds as you can see, this was the scene at telegraph and 16th street last night. you can see dozens of people there running on the streets, a protester on the ground, someone being tackled to the ground there. it's unclear what happened that led to this. oakland police made three arrests for burglary, assault and illegal possession of a weapon. police say no protesters were hit with gunfire. the oakland damage friday night so widespread, everything from businesses to cars that got hit during the chaos. the mercedes-benz towed away yesterday afternoon and windows were smashed and businesses looted. now comes that cleanup for some

frustrated owners. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard has that story. >> i'm very saddened and sickened to talk about the events of last night. >> reporter: mayor libby schaaf stood alongside oakland business owners apeeling for calm and denouncing violence friday night. >> we are sickened to wake up this morning to the destruction and the violence of our beloved oakland. and we want to make clear that this will not be tolerated. >> reporter: a sea of shattered glass covers much of downtown oakland. the cleanup almost overwhelming, businesses big and small were targeted by vandals. the demonstration began peacefully on friday, to protest the death of george floyd, while in police custody in minneapolis, but it quickly changed. fires were set, and windows smashed. vandals set fire to a car inside the showroom at mercedes-benz of oakland. the service manager says seven cars heavily damaged. >> we're already struggling with

all the coronavirus that's going on. the business doesn't need this. >> reporter: windows were smashed at this walgreens store, looters rushed in to grab what they could. the chase bank across the street had its windows smashed along with dozens of other storefronts. check out this target store on broadway, it was trashed, suspected looters were still inside on saturday morning until police arrived. >> to me, it's sickening. it's sad. >> reporter: oakland resident homer stafford was upset about the damage and the message sent by some protesters. >> all these cops are not racist cops. you know, we got a lot of racism, we're going to live with it the rest of our lives, but come on, man, enough is enough. >> reporter: we found these neighbors scraping graffiti off the front of a bar on broadway. they believe the damage was not caused by locals. >> most of the time it's not people from oakland. it's people taking advantage of a situation that is completely super serious right now.

>> reporter: this is the honda dealership on auto road. 12 of inwin dose were broken. across the city, damage could be in the millions of dollars. mayor schaaf urging everyone to stay home in the future at this point, oakland police department says it has no plans to enact a curfew across the city. in oakland, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. in the south bay, 38 arrests were made as protesters clashed with police on friday. the protests started out as peaceful before the demonstration moved on to highway 101. several drivers had their windows smashed. eight patrol cars were vandalized, one officer taken to the hospital and several others suffered minor injuries after getting hit with rocks and bottles. san jose police have arrested a woman accused of intentionally driving her suv into a crowd of protesters friday night. investigators say 26-year-old blanco orosco was taken into custody yesterday. a san jose police officer was able to record the suspect's

license plate number and officers located the suspect and her suv at her home. >> several videos including this one were posted on social immediate yarkts media, shows an suv barming through a crowd of protesters at sixth and santa clara streets downtown on friday night. one deputy fired a shot at the vehicle when the suv turned toward the protesters and deputies which officials say caused her to stop and turn around. two men were injured and have non-life-threatening injuries. san jose mayor sam liccardo joined volunteers cleaning up the graffiti left over from downtown. abc 7 news was at horace mann elementary school on santa clara street some volunteers out as early as 5:00 a.m. cleaning up. >> we've had a few protesters from last night join us who said hey, we want to show this wasn't what the protest was about, we're part of this community and don't like seeing this happen either. >> the mayor also recognized a community member who said he couldn't help because he was on his way to work but did drop off

pizza for the volunteers. very nice. the national coalition of police unions including san francisco, oakland and san jose is calling for peaceful protests. police unions across the country released a joint statement saying what has happened does not reflect who we are as a country. the statement says that george floyd's death was contrary to everything they have taught and abc 7 spoke with the president of the san jose police officer's association who says violence and destruction is not the answer. [ bleep ] >> we support peaceful protests. we always have. we always will. what we witnessed yesterday in san jose started out peaceful, but it absolutely became violent and was a riot. >> he said that in order to have a dialogue, police need to be at the table. target is closing stores all across the nation now because of these protests over the death of george floyd. the company says the closures are temporary. in the bay area, more than 20

stores are listed, including the store in walnut creek. there is an asterisk by one in oakland because it was the one that was heavily damaged during friday's protest and that one will be closed until further notice. let's get a check of the weather with lisa argen. it's going to be a little bit drier today than yesterday. >> yes, we started out with the southerly wind that kept us mild to start yesterday. sunday morning, trending cooler, cloudier, and usually we mix out this low cloud deck. we will, but there's more clouds to replace the low clouds. a pretty sunrise from mt. tam. temperatures a little cool to start the week. we're going to change that and warm it up for the first week of june. my accuweather seven-day forecast is next. >> thanks, lisa. also ahead, watching protests unfold all over the nation over the death of george floyd. what many cities are trying to do now to stop the violence. and down in southern california, the plea from the police chief of l.a. for residents there. we'll have that coming up.

this was the scene in atlanta last night. protesters kneeling in the streets as it grew dark. atlanta is one of a dozen cities under a curfew. this morning the associated press reports nearly 1,700 people in 22 cities have been arrested since thursday, all connected to the protests and the outcry over the death of george floyd. abc news reporter karina mitchell shows us the protest and the violence that led to the cracking down. >> reporter: fury and frustration on full display in the wake of the death of george floyd. demonstrations erupting into chaos across much of the nation. overnight curfews affected in more than two dozen cities including minneapolis where floyd, an unarmed black man, died at the hands of a former police officer. the national guard mobilized in at least 13 states in washington, d.c., including in minnesota for the first time in more than a century. police in minneapolis confronting protesters out after curfew, firing tear gas into a

group of marchers. >> no justice! >> no peace! >> reporter: on the streets of new york city, tension and violence, protesters and police clashing in brooklyn. this police car set ablaze. >> we appreciate, respect all peaceful protests, but now it is time for people to go home. >> reporter: earlier saturday, after witnessing the launch of a spacex rocket in florida, president trump denouncing the violence. >> i stand before you as a friend and ally to every american seeking justice and peace, and i stand before you in firm opposition to anyone exploiting this tragedy to loot, rob, attack and menace. healing, not hatred, justice not chaos are the mission at hand. >> reporter: later, while the president was inside the white house, several hundred protesters gathering outside chanting. >> black lives matter!

black lives matter! >> reporter: in salt lake city projectiles were thrown at police in confrontational exchanges. at least four officers injured in ferguson, missouri, overnight during protests. the chaos all stemming from this disturbing video showing derek chauvin pushing his knee into floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes. >> please, please, i can't breathe. >> reporter: chauvin now charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. three other officers involved in the arrest still under investigation. meanwhile, mayor sylvester turner is saying floyd's body will be returned to his native houston. karina mitchell, abc news, new york. in violent protests also erupted overnight in sacramento. here is a look at some of the chaos in downtown sacramento. you can see a crowd of people gathered around a fire there, looters broke into stores. there were also peaceful protests. here a group of demonstrators seated with their hands up there in front of police and if you're familiar with the area, this is

just a few blocks away from the golden one center so right in the heart of downtown sacramento. one of the cities placed under a curfew is los angeles, where national guard troops are being deployed. protesters were back in the streets yesterday. mayor eric garcetti asked governor gavin newsom to send 500 to 700 members of the guard and late last night, newsom approved it. crowds of demonstrators have torched police cars, vandalized and burglarized stores and clashed with lines of officers. the protesters made their way through beverly hills on to famous rodeo drive with all those luxury stores. l.a. police chief is calling for peace. >> work with us. encourage us to find ways as a community to go through this discord in a manner that's peaceful and a manner that may be, you know, unfiltered, but doesn't involve violence and doesn't involve the type of structure we're seeing around us. >> governor newsom declared a state of emergency in los

angeles county. coming up on "this week" chief anchor george stephanopolous goes one on one with speaker of the house nancy pelosi. watch that full interview on watch that full interview on 8:00 a.m. right here on abc abc 7 news spoke with a cal state east bay professor who 7. >r p a l a lt in the bay area and across the country. we'll get a check of the weather. lisa, it's going to heat up a little later this week. >> we're following the same trend we did last week, the four-day event starting tuesday and wednesday. this week it looks to be shorter, talking tuesday and wednesday again for the warmest temperatures and not just going to be inland but the warming trend will be much, much more modest, closer to the shoreline, means that onshore flow is going to stay with us. that's always some good news, if you like it cooler. here is a look at live doppler 7, a lot of cloud cover, low clouds impacting the bay area. we're not talking about fog as we widen the perspective. there is the system to the south and west that will continue to allow for high and mid level clouds throughout the day today. so that's why we're calling for

a cloudy sunday, and then by tomorrow, looking at brighter conditions. our roof cam with a outside our studios, 56 san francisco. 61 in oakland. mid-50s redwood city and san jose. it is 51 in gilroy and 54 in pacifica, and you can see the clouds stacked up here from the golden gate bridge, where today will be a cool day, cooler than average, normal highs upper 70s for you up in santa rosa. right there it is 57. 58 in petaluma, with upper 50s in napa. 56 in livermore, and a little sun for you here in santa cruz, where we're in the mid-50s, a high today of about 70 degrees. so some filtered sun, parts of the south bay today but overall, more cloud cover, but we will stay dry, mostly cloudy day today and getting pretty hot as we get towards tuesday and wednesday. the entire bay area does warm up, but we'll continue the persistent onshore flow. here is a look at what you can expect for your sunday, as we go

through the day, not only do we have the low clouds, here we are at 11:30 but through the afternoon you can see the continual trend of the varying amounts of cloud cover into your monday, though, looking partly cloudy and a little bit more north wind, that's going to allow for some drier conditions allowing for sun and temperatures coming up to 80s monday afternoon. tuesday a warmup, 80s around the bay are even a few 70s coastside. warmer day of the week should be wednesday, topping out over 100 degrees, in our inland valleys, mid and upper 80s for the bayshore communities and the 70s remain, but by thursday, heat relief is on the way, today a lot of cloud cover, temperatures held down, 60s to low 70s for you in napa. about 75 in livermore and at cue weather seven-day forecast we have the coolest day today for some of you with the cloud cover. notice the other end of the

chrissing teeingen is donating $200 to post bail for protesters across the country. the model and cookbook author originally pledged to give half as much but a twitter user called the protesters rioters and criminals and teagan doubled her pledge. in subsequent tweets she had harsh words for the president and encouraged people to keep this same energy when they vote.

still to come, president trump is sending mixed messages about the protests, why the mayor of d.c. is calling his words an attack on humanity and black people. plus the sonoma county sheriff does not plan to enforce the health officer's latest order. how the d.a. is now stepping i we're all doing our part by staying at home. that could mean an increase in energy bills. you can save by using a fan to cool off... unplugging and turning off devices when not in use... or closing your shades during the day. stay well and keep it golden.

areas with some 60s. oakland 61, 56 san francisco. it's 51 in gilroy and mid-50s in san jose. there's where we go next, you can see the sun coming up, upper 50s santa rosa, petaluma, and 58 in concord. it's going to be a cloudy day today, this morning, without that south wind, we are two to seven degrees cooler and 10:00, still the 60s and the sky cover looks like it wants to clear but by 1:00 low clouds have departed but mid and high-level clouds replace them and that's why we're a little bit cooler than average. 6:00 tonight, mostly cloudy evening. so we're going to brighten it up tomorrow, talk about warmer weather to start the week, and getting hot midweek. liz? >> thanks, lisa. developing news following a night of protests and looting in the wake of george floyd's death, san francisco will enforce a curfew between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. starting tonight. the national guard is on standby. >> to be clear, this is the last thing that i want to do as mayor.

i want peace. i want protest, but i don't want the kind of violence and crime we see playing itself across the streets of our city to continue. and we have a responsibility -- >> mayor london breed says she feels the hurt and pain of the protesters who call for an end to the police killings of black men but says the looting and violence will not be tolerated. mayor breed says the city will protect peaceful protesters. mior breed's public safety press conference came after looting and vandalism that had already started in the city. we are recapping, there was a crowd of protesters on market street. police surrounded the area as looters broke into stores like swarovski crystal, shattered glass doors at the main entrance of the westfield mall and this is new video overnight of looters breaking into stores in san francisco's chinatown. you can see a crowd standing around someone who then throws an object to break through the front door. you can see them breaking that

door, going inside, this is in chinatown. other stores like cvs and walgreens along market were also hit by looters last night and we can see that they were initially initially boarded up. that did not stop crowds of people from looting and going inside. in the east bay, several stores were looted in emeryville throughout the night as well. people were coming out of best buy, stunning video coming out of best buy with electronic devices, boxes of them and one of best buy's vehicles was set on fire. looters hit the bay street shopping center, a uniqlo, h&m, ross, they were all looted as well. oakland mayor libby schaaf says the violence she saw friday night from protesters that that crossed the line and she did urge people to stay home. in the north bay, we showed you some video earlier of protests in santa rosa, also turned violent. police stopped crowds from entering the downtown transit mall, but you can see glass window panes on stores were broken. officers there used tear gas to disperse the protesters after

police were getting rockets and bottles thrown at them and last night santa rosa police advised businesses to close early and for residents to avoid the downtown area. no word yet from the police department on how many people were detained or arrested. oakland police released preliminary information about incidents during the protest. totals from friday and saturday nights from this whole weekend, now we know as of now, 21 people arrested by oakland police. ten people arrested by outside agencies, six oakland police officers injured, seven officers from outside agencies injured. all the injuries to law enforcement happened friday night. opd says as of now they do not know of any injuries to law enforcement last night. to washington d.c., president trump tweeting unleashed a warning what may be coming. rachael scott has the details.

>> reporter: president trump sending a mixed message, on one hand discouraging the violence erupting on american streets. >> i stand before you as a friend and ally to every american seeking justice and peace, and i stand before you in firm opposition to anyone exploiting this tragedy to loot, rob, attack and menace. >> reporter: but continuing to use violent rhetoric. first tweeting a message to protesters in minute yep place writing "when the looting starts, the shooting starts." later saying he didn't know its racist past. >> i've heard that phrase for a long time. didn't know where it came from or where it originated. >> reporter: he singled out antifa and the radical left. even as state officials say groups could also include anarchists and white supremacists while seeming to send a crypted message to his supporters, tweeting "it's maga night at the white house." >> i have no idea with f they're going to be here. by the way they love african-american people, they love black people.

>> reporter: protesters beginning to gather at the president's door. you can see some of the damage from this weekend's protest but this is blocked off the area to get into lafayette park, the closest the protesters will get to the gates of the white house. some turning violent throwing bricks, rocks and bottles at secret service, ripping down barricades. the white house put on temporary lockdown. the president said he watched every move from inside, warning "if those protesters breach the fence, they would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs, and most ominous weapons." the mayor of d.c. calling his words an attack on humanity and black people. >> to make a reference to vicious dogs is no subtle reminder to african-americans of segregationists who let dogs out on women, children and innocent people. >> reporter: rachael scott, abc nws, washington. now to the coronavirus, the

supreme court has rejected a challenge to california's limit on large church gatherings. a san diego area church argued state rules infringed on its religious freedom. all coronavirus testing centers in l.a. closed yesterday afternoon amid worries over the third day of protests over the death of george floyd and a missouri man tested positive for the coronavirus after a memorial day weekend party at the lake of the ozarks. the viral videos you probably saw showing large crowds and very little social distancing. now there is a case of coronavirus, they have to go back and do contact tracing and also a concern demonstrations. in the middle of a pandemic and not a lot of social distance happening. a free walk-through coronavirus testing site opens at 10:00 in this the tenderloin neighborhood at the tenner doloin recreation center at ellis near high street. you need a gmail account to get tested and registered.

welcome back. a bay area couple has become one of the first to be married by video conference in san mateo county. thomas and klee baxter wanted a traditional cambodian style we hadding this year, after their destination wedding in costa rica. before it could take place the pandemic hit. the couple couldn't wait because they want to file adoption paperwork so they said their i do's online instead. they got 24 hours notice and put together a ceremony in the living room. the county official brought his laptop into a chapel to give them a wedding vibe. pretty cool. congratulations to them. lisa, what's it going to look like this week, a little warmer sunday. >> that's right. today we're starting out on the cooler side than we were yesterday, with the southerly winds ahead of that system that brought the wild afternoon thunderstorms. right now, peaceful look at santa cruz, where we're in the 50s, some filtered sun later on

both the 49ers and warriors are speaking out following the death of george floyd. the warriors released a statement "we condemn in no uncertain terms racism and violence perpetrated against members of the black community and we can call on all people to channel their justifiable anger into creating a more justice and equitable society." 49ers owner jed york released a statement that reads "heinous acts have been committed in recent weeks. before we are able to realize impactful change, we must first have the courage and compassion as human beings to come together. and acknowledge the problem. black men, women and children and other oppressed minorities

in just a few hours, two nasa astronauts are expected to reach the international space station. >> three, two, one, zero. ignition. liftoff of the falcon 9 "crew dragon," go nasa, go spacex, god speed. >> so amazing to watch that yesterday. doug hurley and bob behnken were on board for this historic launch at cape canaveral, the first time the astronauts launched from the u.s. soil in nearly a decade. they used a spacex falcon 9 rocket which released the "crew dragon" spacecraft. the naughts are inside that spacecraft and they are expected to dock at the international space station around 7:30 this morning our time. very exciting. did you watch it? >> the computer, the tv, yes, it was very exciting. today this morning, it's a calm look at santa cruz. we're in the mid-50s and temperatures are going to make it to about 70 but it's going to be overcast today, not only in the central coast area but right along the bay area, the coast, the low clouds and the high clouds today, mostly cloudy throughout the morning hours and high clouds throughout the afternoon so temperatures as a

the fbi is investigating the shooting of two federal officers during the protests in oakland on friday, one of them has died. he has been identified as a 53-year-old man from pinole, and at this time investigators are not sure that the shooting, they at first weren't sure it was connected to the protests but now it is known that there is a connection between what was happening at the time and these, this incident and a national coalition of police unions including those in san francisco, oakland and san jose, they are now calling for peaceful protests but again, this is the dramatic video over the past few days unfolding in the bay area like so many scenes we've seen across the country, looting, violence and outrage over what happened to george floyd in minneapolis. that's the recap. we'll follow more on abc7news.com and the abc 7 news app. thanks for joining us on "abc 7 mornings." i'm liz kreutz along with lisa argen. abc 7 continues at 9:00 amg.
