country. but first let's start with a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. >> good morning to you. it's a dry but cloudy start to the day. we will hold on to some of this on the day. high and mid-level clouds moving in this afternoon. mild 63 in oakland, 57 san francisco and low 60s in san jose. gilroy checking in at 60 and santa cruz with a little sun there. 67 out by the delta. nicely framed view of our waterfront here. looking at the cloud cover throughout the day, 70s around the bay and fog tonight, it's going to be a shallow marine layer for monday. that means we get more sunshine and start our warming trend. detailed look at how hot we get in a few minutes. and an hour for now the

mayor is set to address the public after a night of looting over george floyd's death. this as san francisco prepares a curfew for 8:00 tonight. we're live at union square this morning with a look at the damage. good morning, cornell. >> hey, liz, we are seeing a lot of damage and a lot of cleanup going on in union square. we're just really taking it all in right now. check this out. this is the swarovski crystal store here. you can see all of the glass is broken. looters ransacked this store overnight, taking really all of the merchandise. there's truly nothing left here. it is a shambles. we have volunteers here, in fact, cleaning up a lot of the glass. they don't even work here. they were doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. a lot of people are outraged over how it happened. on post street, saks fifth avenue store, we have video of

it being looted. witnesses say there were hundreds of people on the street last night. roughly 20 to 30 stores vandalized from market street to powell street to geary and post. it was a night of peaceful protests, is which descended into violence, according to the mayor. the mayor said she understands anger and frustration over the death of george floyd but violence in the city of san francisco won't be tolerated. >> this is the last thing that i want to do as mayor. i want peace. i want protests. but i don't want the kinds of violence and crime we see playing itself across the streets of our city to continue. >> she's instituted a curfew, which begins at 8:00 tonight. as you can imagine, people who live near union square were

certainly concerned. police officer going by us right now. obviously concerned and a little bit frightened about what they were hearing and what they were seeing. angela is one of those people. angela, you want to stand right here for us. angela, you live near union square. what did you hear and see last night? >> i do. i live two blocks from union square. it started off with what sounded like bullets but for the whole day people were banging brick blocks together, like distracting noises, but it sounded like shooting and then it sounded like explosions and maybe fireworks in big cans or maybe buildings. then we started to hear the glass break. my block is mostly residential. glass breaking on my block was probably the most frightening thing to hear. i have a security camera. i didn't go anywhere near my windows last night. coming out this morning and seeing san francisco's tradition

of civil disobedience had been turned into an opportunity to destroy and loot for personal gain. this isn't about the topic it started to be about. >> we appreciate your comments. thank you very much. good luck to you. we've just got a statement from the union square business improvement district. and it's hard. it says san francisco's union square has long been a celebratory heart of san francisco. i'm reading here now. and it's played witness to many historic moments and protests. last night's vandalism and looting has broken that heart. we were already on our knees, just beginning to get up from covid-19. this has knocked suss down again. all san francisco, all san franciscans peace officers and citizens understand how to take part in peaceful demonstrations in ways that move us forward, not backwards. last night was not one of those times. liz mentioned mayor london breed will hold a news conference

later this hour. we will carry that live. we're live in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> very scary, thank you, cornell. we will check in with you later in the show as well. we're live at union square where just like yesterday morning, we saw the afternoon and destruction from looting and vandals throughout the city after the night of protests, and some people are saying riots. san francisco police bill scott also addressed the community last night. take a listen. >> as an african-american man, and as chief of police, i can relate to what people are feeling. i can relate to it. the officers that are out there working their behinds off to do a job right now are in the most difficult time in most of their careers, if not our lifetimes. i can relate to that too. >> chief scott said he understands people feel the need to get out expense themselves. he said officers will do the best they can to protect

peaceful demonstrators. he said violence will not be targeted. looters targeted several stores here in the bay area. the action picked up as the sun went down yesterday. we saw multiple stores hit in emeryville, including the best buy, h&m and others as you see on the map here around powell plaza street shopping center there. there is no evidence the vandals have anything to do with the protests specifically but this is all coming after the major unrest over the death of george floyd. you see at best buy people running out with tvs and other devices in their hands. law enforcement officers arrived later didn't make arrests. we can see how many people are in there taking all of the electronic devices out of that best buy. it's unclear how many people fully were taken into custody but we do have updated numbers from oakland pd we will get to in a moment. now to the bay street shopping center in emeryville where people grabbed piles of clothing from h&m.

seconds later moved on to the store next to it. that was emeryville. meantime, i want to get to the demonstration under way for a federal office killed in the protest last night, early saturday morning, late friday night. abc7 news learned the officer is 53-year-old patrick underwood. he lived in pa knoll. this shooting happened near the federal building, 12th clay street, friday night. the fbi said another officer was wounded and they're calling it domestic terrorism. abc7's laura martinez has the story. >> reporter: friends and family are mourning the loss of 53-year-old patrick underwood, the officer shot and killed friday night. >> an asasssassin cowardly shoto contractors as they watched the protest. >> reporter: the shooting

happened around clay street in oakland around 9:45. underwood's sister posted this on facebook -- my brother, dave patrick underwood, a police officer was murdered while on duty during the riots. this violence must stop. they said miss jacobs would issue a statement about her brother's passing sunday. a friend from middle school tweeted, his name is patrick underwood and he also went by dave. he was a kind, empathetic soul with a smile that could light up a room. pat, this world is going to miss you. a senior dhs official told abc7 news the shooting of the two officers are related to the protests over george floyd's death but the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. >> it's likely that there was a targeting of uniformed otherwises to the extent with which they were involved with our demonstration, we're really

not sure. >> reporter: dhs is calling the deadly shooting an act of domestic terrorism. >> when someone targets a police officer, nas that is an act of domestic terrorism. >> reporter: officials say they're saying more violence during peaceful protests. >> we're interested in all groups, violent groups, extremist groups that are going to take advantage of individuals exercising their first amendment right to do that peaceful protest and turning it into something else. >> reporter: laura martinez, abc7 news. new video shows oakland police officers setting off flash bangs and using tear gas to disperse crowds. this was the scene at telegraph and 16th street last night. you can see dozens of people running on the street. there's someone on the ground there, protester there. unclear what led to that. oakland police said they made three arrests for burglary, assault, and illegal possession of a weapon. police say no protesters were hit with gunfire. in the south bay 38 arrests were made as protesters clashed with police on friday. that protest started out as

peaceful, before the demonstration as we showed you moved to highway 101. eight patrol cars were also vandalized. of one officer was taken to the hospital and several others suffered minor injuries after getting hit with rocks and bottles. san jose police arrested a woman of intentionally driving her suv into a crowd of protesters friday night. she was taken into custody yesterday. they say a san jose police officer was able to record the suspect's license plate number and officers located both the suspect and her suv at her home. several videos, including this one, which we shows you yesterday morning, were posted on social media showing an suv barreling through a crowd of protesters at sixth and santa clara streets downtown friday night. one deputy fired a shot at the vehicle when the suv turned towards the protesters and deputies say caused her to stop

friday night's looting was really widespread. you see a mercedes being towed away. and windows smashed and businesses looted. now comes the cleanup for so many frustrated owners. abc7's cornell bernard has that story. >> i'm very saddened and sickened to talk about the events of last night. >> reporter: mayor libby shaft speaking alongside business owners appealing for calm. >> we are sickened to wake up this morning to the destruction and violence of our beloved oakland. and we want to make clear that this will not be tolerated. >> reporter: a sea of shattered glass covers much of downtown oakland.

the cleanup almost overwhelming. businesses big and small were targeted by vandals. the demonstration began peacefully on friday to protest the death of george floyd while in police custody in minneapolis. but it quickly changed. fires were set and windows smashed. vandals set fire to a car inside the show room at mercedes-benz of oakland. the service manager said seven cars heavily damaged. >> we're already struggling with all of the coronavirus that's going on. the business doesn't need this. >> reporter: windows were smashed at this walgreens store. looters grabbed what they could. the chase bank across the street had its windows smashed along with dozens of other store fronts. check out this target store on broadway. it was trashed. suspected looters were still inside saturday morning until police arrived. >> to me, it's sickening. it's sad. >> reporter: oakland resident homer stafford was upset about

the damage and message set by some protesters. >> all of these cops are not racist cops 67. we have racism. we will live with it the rest of our lives. but come on, man, enough is enough. >> reporter: we found businesses scraping graffiti off the front of a bar. they believe damage was not caused by locals. >> most of the time it's not people from oakland. pz people coming in to take advantage of this is completely super serious right now. >> reporter: this is the honda dealership here on auto road. 12 windows were broken. across the city damage could be in the millions of dollars. mayor schaaf urging everyone to stay home. at this point the oakland police department has no plans to enact a curfew across the city. and governor newsom declared a state of emergency in los angeles county. the curfew was lifted this morning. the associated press reports 7,200 people in 22 cities have

been arrested since thursday. national guard troops are being deployed in los angeles and more than a dozen other cities after another day of violent protests. abc news matt gutman has the latest. >> reporter: overnight, fiery unrest coast to coast. demands for justice erupting after spasms of rioting and looting from new york city, where east cruisers were set aflamed to los angeles, where mass looting tooks place and dozens of cities in between. in nashville, historic city hall set ablaze. the national guard called in to try to tame the unrest. in los angeles saturday, the demonstrations beginning in downtown and sprawling across the city. >> you're not going anywhere! >> reporter: one of them going to the symbols of privilege in america, beverly hills rodeo drive. an intense standoff. they're starting to fire using shotguns which appear to be

pellets or bean bags of some sort. they're trying to move the crowd back. >> honest to god, we made our point. >> reporter: honest to god, authorities telling abc news they were mostly civil but squirmishes gave way to looting. on rodeo drive, looters smash into luxury stores. that's a target back there. you can see them hauling out a big-screen tv. no police in sight and seemingly everywhere police overwhelmed. in seattle two ar-15 rifles taken from a police car, a quick-thinking security guard grabs one rifle and removes the magazine. raising the bridges, clashes breaking out there and one group of people seen on camera beating three officers before other protesters put themselves in harm's way to stop the violence. in indianapolis that situation turning deadly amid escalating violence that gunfire breaking out killing at least one person, and on the east coast, dozens arrested after a violent night in atlanta.

crowds facing off with authorities. police saying an over hit by an atv speeding through the streets. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. senator kamala harris is weighing in on this l.a. protest. in an interview with cnn she said what we are seeing now is a repeat of history. >> this is what happens when whole communities of people have not received justice, and the pain is real and it's legitimate. in the strips of los angeles, 30 years ago, looked the same way in terms of the protests around rodney king and not much happened since then to really change the circumstances. >> a lot of people making that comparison. senator harris said she does not condone vandalism or violence, and people have the right to feel pain and anger. she actually joined a protest in front of the white house yesterday afternoon. the senator said to stop excessive force in the u.s., bad law enforcement officers must be punished and there needs to be independent investigations.

and violent protests also erupted last night in sacramento. this is a look at some of the chaos in downtown sacramento. not too far from the golden one center if you're familiar with the area. you see a crowd of people gathered around the fire. looters broke into several stores. there were also peaceful protests. here you see demonstrators seated with their hands up in front of police. let's take a quick break to get a check of the weather. lisa, it will be drier today than yesterday. >> a lot drier. yesterday a couple hundredths in the north bay but where they had the thunderstorms, three quarters of an inch of rain for the diablo range. that was pretty extreme. we also had the hail but this morning just the stable air with us. how clouds and fog. here's a look at live doppler 7. as this sort of mixes out, we'll get a few peeks of sun but more clouds are on the way. you see widening the perspective, there's an area of low pressure off to the south

and west and that will allow for high and mid-level clouds to stream in later on today. but we're also going to see a shallow marine layer come into play tonight. that's going to work in our favor for a warmup beginning monday, the first day of the month. here's san rafael. cloudy out there. 62 in san jose and gilroy and at the airport with the clouds, we're in the mid-60s. petaluma, 67. fairfield, 64. good morning, livermore, 60 for you. here in the east bay, mostly cloudy skies. few peeks of sun but with more clouds this afternoon, temperatures trending a little cooler than they should be for this time of year. our warmup begins tomorrow with the much, much warmer weather arriving tuesday and wednesday. here's a look at the day today, where we've got a good deal of cloud cover through 5:00, 6:00. notice the onshore winds allowing for perhaps a little bit of a breeze later on today in the east bay. as we wake up tomorrow morning, notice the clouds are beginning to peel back with that shallow

we're here in front of the westin st. francis, where a lot of the windows -- in fact 16 of them, are being boarded up as we speak. we are seeing a lot of this happening and a lot of boarding of windows powell street, where windows were shattered. we're showing the swarovski swa store, where looters ransacked horribly overnight. almost nothing left signed. we have video of the saks fifth avenue store on post street being looted. witnesses say hundreds of people were on the street last night. roughly 20 to 25 stores vandalized from market street to powell to geary. talked to a few minutes who saw what was happening and said it was very upsetting now that the sun has come up. >> it's sad to see for our country. it's really sad to see.

mare breed's public safety press conference came after looting already started in the city. this is video of looters breaking into stores in chinatown. you can see a crowd hanging around and someone throws an object, there it is, to break through the front door. other stores like krcvs were hi by looters. but it did not stop people from breaking the boards down and looting. and emeryville, people were coming out of best buy with electronic devices. one of best buy's vehicles was set on fire -- there it is -- and looters hit the bay street shopping sinter, h&m and ross was hit. a colleague of mine said nordstrom rack was impacted. a lot of stores impacted there. oakland mayor libby schaaf said the violence she saw last night crossed the line and she urged people to stay home. oakland police -- i want to show you this -- they released

preliminary information about incidents during these protests. these are the totals from friday and saturday night from oakland pd. they say in total from two nights now 21 people were arrested by oakland police. ten people were arrested by outside agencies. and six oakland police officers were injured. seven officers from outside agencies were injured. no injuries to officers happened this past night. all of those injuries were friday night into saturday morning. now in the north bay, protests in santa rosa also turned violent. police stopped crowds from entering the downtown transit mall. you see glass window panes were broken. officers used tear gas to disperse the protesters after police were getting rocks and bottles thrown at them. last night they advised businesses to close early and residents avoid the downtown area. there's no word yet from the police department how many people were detained or arrests or if there were any injuries.

let's go national now to washington, d.c. where protests raging outside the white house. inside president trump on twitter threatening to retaliate with, in his words, vicious dogs and ominous weapons. cecilia vega has the details. >> reporter: overnight, that chaos erupting just steps from the white house, but i show of force by the president's make america great again supporters did not happen. earlier in the day the president essentially inviting those supporters to show up tweeting, tonight i understand is maga night at the white house? he later denied he was stoking racial tensions. >> by the way, they love african-american people. maga loves black people. >> reporter: and in a tweet that critics said evoked images of civil rights, police siccing dogs on protesters, the president said nobody came close to breaching the fence. if they had, they would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs and most ominous weapons i had ever seen 6789 also in the president's line of fire, d.c.'s democratic mayor.

he accused her of not letting local police intervene in the protests outside the white house but that false claim was quickly contradicted, not just by washington officials but also the president's own secret service, who said d.c. police were indeed very much part of the response. >> what used to be heard in dog whistles we now hear from a bull horn. >> reporter: while president trump said he did speak with george floyd's family, floyd's brother is now speaking out too, saying in that conversation he couldn't even get a word in. >> it was so fast, he didn't give me the opportunity to even speak. it was hard. i was trying to talk to him but he just kept like pushing me off, like i don't want to hear what you're talking about. i just told him, i want justice. >> reporter: cecilia vega, abc news, washington. and san francisco congresswoman and house speaker nancy pelosi has a message for our country in crisis. >> let's come together. let's be prayerful, especially on sunday morning, about how we can put our differences aside

crude, we had to blur most of it out. this is just the tip of the iceberg. >> it started off with generic graffiti and got more racist. >> reporter: dennis has been documenting the hateful graffiti in dozens of photos since last year that show phrases like china disease, go home, china, and more. he's disheartened to see it in areas frequented by children. >> it's right by the stop sign. everyone on the street has to stop here and has to see this. >> reporter: giving the time of recent tweelts from the president targeting china, they're afraid of what could happen next. >> it's very unfortunate. it emboldens the people on the fringe who are secretly racist. now they feel more power to be more open about it. >> reporter: san mateo police have been responsive getting the graffiti cleaned up within a matter of days after it was reported but residents want to know what's being done. >> we're increasing patrol

breed's live press conference is scheduled to begin at 10:15 live. we will bring that to you live. this is following the demonstrations following the death of george floyd. police arrested 1,700 people nationwide. to recap, san francisco will implement a curfew starting at 8:00 tonight to prevent looting and violence. the city said it will protect peaceful protesters. the fbi is investigating the shooting of two federal officers during the protests in oakland on friday. one of them has died. officials say the shooting is related to the demonstrations. a national coalition of pieolic unions, including san francisco and san jose, are calling for peaceful protests. that's a wrap on what we know now. let's just get a final check of the weather. we're going to see a lot of clouds in the north bay. from san rafael to napa, temperatures climb into the 60s and settle in the mid-70s. elsewhere around the bay, warmer in the east bay. upper 70s and mid-70s in san
