protests. today you can help to make a difference. good morning, everybody. checkie before we get to the stories, because, mike, you said we are expecting a mini heat wave. is that what we are calling it? >> yeah, i think so because it will be a two-day heat wave unlike last week where it was a four-day heat wave. so we will call it a mini this time. i will check the latest on the heat wave coming up, the official heat advisories for tomorrow. today we kind of set the stage. you can see the calmer conditions out there, the sea breeze, the refreshing air-conditioning gone and just a few high clouds trying to move across our skies, so it's 69 in the east bay hills. let's take a look at temperatures. 52 to about 60 this morning, and hanging on to the mid to upper 60s at the coast this afternoon, and 87 to 94 at 4:00, and still in the 80s in most neighborhoods at 7:00. be prepared for a little harder

sleeping weathe the next two nights. back to you. >> thanks, mike. new overnight, a driver led vallejo police on a chase for about 20 miles before being captured with items that could have potentially been looted. here's video chase. officers got reports of looting at a cvs store on sonoma boulevard. the pursuit ended at a business park in richmond and this is when you see what officers discovered here, mannequins and wigs in the back of the suspected car, and that could have come from a salon in vallejo. police have been involved in several chases overnight. and then video shows looting at the mall. you can see a cherry-picker crane being used to break into the best buy. police sent an alert last night warning people of looting at the

mall. in the south bay, some protesters made their way on to 101 in palo alto. this was yesterday afternoon near the embarcadero spit. exit. >> people gathered for a peaceful protest outside of san jose city hall. two groups of police were staged nearby. cleanup efforts continue this morning in san jose. abc7 news reporter, julian glover is live with more on that. >> good morning, reggie. the first night of the curfew being in place in san jose, 55 people were arrested and sjpd reporting there was damage to many local small businesses in the area, so today the mayor along with many residents in the city will be out there helping clean things up. you are lookingmonday, and you working hard to clean up damage done by vandalism.

president joe biden promising to address institutional racism. today he's in philadelphia to address the unrest in our country. biden met with leaders of the african-american community yesterday, and he said if elected he will set up a police oversight body during his first 100 days in office. an independent autopsy commissioned by the floyd famild it notes that floyd had other conditions and had drugs in his system, and both autopsies ruled his death a homicide. minnesota's attorney gennow han but says he must proceed with

want to get to. i want to bring up the graphics for everybody, if you are headed southbound on 880 you will run into a major backup, and at one point all lanes were blocked and it's specifically southbound 880 by alvarado niles. the cars have been moved off to the right-hand shoulder, but injuries have been reported and first responders are there, and looks like only one lane is closed right now. heads up to you on that. and people that rely on mass transit there are changes due to the curfews in place. az transi announced they will suspend service from 7:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and that will go until june 5th. and san trans, service sus from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and no changes to bart but bart has

the sister of a fallen security guard will speak to reporters in southern california today. this comes as the abc7 news i-team learned more about pat underwood that was shot to death on friday night at the oakland federal building. he grew up in the east bay and built a lot of friendships at pinole high school, and one of his friends is pastor vazquez. >> it's devastating. the family is broken because we know what kind of person pat was. pat would not hurt a fly. >> he was very close with his family and very close with his friends. he would do anything, really,

for anybody. >> the fbi and oakland police believe people inside this van open fire on underwood and his partner. a surveillance camera recorded this image but it did not capture the van's license plate. we are hearing from a san jose man that rushed to help an injured police officer. video captured the whole thing. it was at friday's demonstration, but later an officer ended up shooting tim harper, that man in the video, with a rubber bullet when he was defending a teenage boy. harper says he recognized this officer, jared yuen, as the one that fired at him. >> i just said, hey, you just shot a kid in the head over here, what the heck is wrong with you guys? the neck thing i know, an officer walked between two officers and shot me and stepped back. >> i am not happy with his actions, and i will tell you i know jared who is a good kid

they issued a statement of the black lives matter movement. the music industry is calling today blackout to draw awareness to racial injustice. apple music shows the message to the page for you, and it's calling on people to speak and act against racism and injustice. artists including mick jaggar and quincy jones are also participating on blackout tuesday, and many are #theshowmustbepaused. just as they are beginning to reopen with covid-19 restrictions easing, merchants raced to cover their businesses with plywood last night, and many reacting after receiving an

a highway patrol trooper walking up to this woman, hugging her. she was grateful. >> i love you, man. >> in new york's times square, an officer that was kneeling, raising his arms, a demonstrator then shaking his hand and the two then hug. you can hear the cheers erupting in the crowd. genesee county sheriff in flint, michigan, who told the demonstrators there, we are here for you and what can we do? when they said march, he did. >> the only reason we are here is to make sure you got a voice. that's it. don't think for a second that he represents who these cops are from all over the county and around this nation. we are out there to help people and not do that nonsense. we want to be with y'all for real, so i took the helmet off and laid the batons down. i want to make this a parade, not a protest.

getting ready for 90s returning to some areas today. good morning to you on this tuesday, june 2nd. thank you for being with us. let's see what we have in store today with mike. hi, mike. >> thanks for being with us this tuesday morning. the mini heat wave begins today and starts with live doppler 7 showing clear conditions other than a few high clouds roaming in from the south, and that's exactly where the warm air is invading. here's a look at the east bay hills camera, and it's 69 degrees. here's a look at our temperatures. mid to upper 70s along the coast, into san francisco, proximity of the water keeping you more comfortable than the rest of us. mid-80s to near 90s around the bay, and mid and upper 90s in our east bay valleys. today is day one, and tomorrow is even hotter. i will show you the newest numbers and the chance of rain coming up this weekend in the accuweather 7-day forecast.

here's jobina. at the live desk vallejo police shot a man that broke into a walgreens and that led into a confrontation with another person that rammed into a patrol car and then that person led officers on a high-speed chase. according to the "san francisco chronicle," police were responding to, quote, riot-related criminal activity around 12:30 this morning, and the police shot one suspect on redwood street and then asut ar leading police on a chase. no officers were hurt. curfews are still in effect all across the bay area. can you see the locations and the times on this map we're going to show you. most of them extended for a few more days, but some will be in effect until further notice. in walnut creek police ended up using tear-gas on protesters that did not go home after curfew last night. abc7 news reporter, amy

hollyfield is live in walnut creek. >> reporter: good morning, kumasi. the curfew took affect here last night at 7:00, and that's when trouble started. the protesters marched on 680 and shutdown traffic on the interstate, and police used tear-gas on the crowd when a protester through a ro protester threw a rock at them. in the downtown area, we also saw protesters taking off and getting out of the area. they did clear the freeway by about 6:30. before the situation turned tense, there was a peaceful protest downtown walnut creek to show support for george floyd and the black lives matter movement. we checked the downtown area, any damage and broken windows, we don't see any problems, nothing like what happened to broadway plaza on sunday, we

just see a lot of boarded up buildings, and a lot of business took proactive measures to thei. >> thank you, amy. oakland police arrested 100 people overnight and 80 of those arrests were involved in the curfew, and 20 were for other crimes where police recovered guns. this video shows police officers putting zip ties on multiple people last night, but earlier in the days students organized a george floyd solidarity march. thousands of people marched from oakland tech high school towards city hall and oakland police headquarters. students stressed the eventroste th giant crowd filled broadway avenue and marched 40 blocks downtown. as you can see, that event drew

hundreds of people cheering them on as they walked by, and health care workers at kaiser hospital were cheered on, and there was support shown by ringing bells, and it's estimated 15,000 people gathered. >> in the north bay, police arrested 27 people. this was mostly people who had violated the curfew order. police say one person was arrested in santa rosa for shooting business windows with . nobody was hurt. this comes after hundreds of people gathered for a peaceful protest yesterday. some said they refused to let two nights of violence and looting detract in the demand for change in the wake of george floyd's death. they are sad some people are turning to violence to show outrage. >> i don't think it's the best way to go about anything, in in situation we are fighting violence and trying to end that situation for our community and we should not be inflicting it. >> she turned her words into

action and organized the peaceful protest at the square, and the police chief showed up and took a knee with the crowd. conflicting george floyd have conflicting information. >> protests demanding all four officers in the death of george floyd be arrested and charged. peaceful protesters working from setting themselves against the violence is hoping this does not overshadow their cause. >> this was opportunists looking for trouble. >> in denver, thousands frozen on the ground for nine minutes. in new york, peaceful protests early in the day, but storefronts later shattered and tempers flaring and bunches

thrown. in philadelphia, counter-protesters armed with hatchets and other weapons facing off with demonstrators. in >> if a city or state refuses to take actions to defend the life and property of their residents then i will deploy the united states military and quickly solve the problem for them. >> meanwhile the president of the minneapolis police union is facing fresh scrutiny for saying the four officers involved were, quote, terminated one-out due process and he's trying to help them fight for their jobs. abc news, washington. a bishop in washington, d.c. says she's outraged that president trump visited the church without permission after clearing out peaceful protesters with tear-gas.

visit, and president trump has threatened to deploy thousands of armed soldiers to break up the rioting, looting and vandalism across the country. governor newsom is staying away from directly responding to president trump. at a black church in sacramento yesterday the governor offered support for protesters but ses violence will not be tolerated. newsom says society has to do more to end systemic racism. >> we have to own up to some very difficult things. the black community is not responsible for what is happening in the country right now. we are. we are. our institutions are responsible. we are accountable to this moment. >> the governor gave a 20-minute emotional speech but did not offer up any specific policy solutions. broken glass and broken hearts in oakland. coming up next, a business owner

still finding hope despite the looting. right now we are taking a live look at the big board, at the new york stock exchange. right now we're up about 83 points. plus, one community coming together after weekend demonstrations. how you can help this morning. first, a look at our weather and mike nicco. >> i am hydrating already knowing it's going to be in the 90s later on this afternoon. hi, everybody, the heat wave starts today. we will start with comfortable temperatures, if not cool along the east bay shore, and we have 50 at santa rosa, and san carlo, 61. mid to upper 60s around brentwood and antioch. most of us in the 50s this morning, so a big warming trend this afternoon, up to 30 to 40 degrees compared to this morning -- excuse me. the bay bridge toll plaza, you know what that means, it's just beating the heat today will be

one of your obstacles weather-wise. we will hang around the low 90s for the afternoon hours. in the north bay, 65 at 8:00. 87 at noon. low to mid-90s for the afternoon hours. by 8:00, we're 83. our hottest temperatures in the east bay valley, 71 at 8:00 and 88 at noon and mid to even a few upper 90s. i think these temperatures may be a little under done this afternoon. still 86 at 8:00. so today is day one of two, and tomorrow will be even hotter. i will show you that coming up and a chance of wet weather and below average temperatures this weekend in the accuweather 7-day forecast. first, here's jobina. good morning. how are you? >> good morning, mike. i am doing all right, thank you very much. hello, everyone. i have a couple things to get to here. first off bringing up the graphic so i can let you know the sig-alert we were following in union city has now cleared but the backup is still rather extensive all the way past the bridge there, look at that, and

this is southbound 880 around alvarado niles. the speed is up to 25 miles per hour now, and that's a big improvement from the 2 miles per hour we saw earlier. and then mass transit updates due to the curfew. ac transit, no service between 7:30 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., and that will go until june 6th. san trans, service to and from san francisco will be suspended from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. due to the curfews. bart has been closing stations because of the protests so keep up on social media and their app. these students have endured more than any of us could imagine and we want to make sure they recognize all of their hard work and efforts, and we want to recognize and say

i drive my van five days a week. i'm the only one touching the van, but i'm still gonna take the time to wipe everything down. i recently took a break cause my girlfriend and i just had a baby. in the middle of this pandemic, you know, having a kid, there's something different. when i came back, amazon completely changed.

inland neighborhoods. the heat pump here, look at the heat being funneled through the central valley to the inland neighborhoods, and i will have those numbers coming up next. first, let's get over to jobina and a live desk update. good morning, everybody. we have breaking news at the live desk right now. san francisco based company stitch fix announced it's laying off 1,400 employees, and that's 18% of the company's workforce. and the retailer will move 2,000 jobs to cities like austin and minneapolis where the cost of living is lower. employees that don't want to relocate, will get a serceltndep finding a job. >> thank you, jobina. san francisco's public defender wants to overhaul policies that allow police to use force after video emerged of

an officer pressing her knee into the neck of a black teenager, and this was a few months back. the images reminded a lot of people of george floyd's death in minneapolis. a "the chronicle" is reporting that one official thinks officers should be fired for using this technique. and then shops are preparing for whatever is coming next, vandalism or looting, and we were sent pictures of business after business putting up plywood. if you are not familiar with this area, 4th street is west of downtown and the uc berkeley campus. crews will be back at it today cleaning up damage left behind.

abc7 news reporter, julian glover is live with more on that. >> good morning, reggie. those residents will be teaming up with the san mateo mayor, and he will be out there helping clean up the city. you can see a couple hundred people came out on monday, working hard to clean up the vandalism and damage done by vandals, and the mayor says he doesn't want to calls for justice to be lost by the actions of a few, and he wants to make sure small businesses can bounce back from this and the pandemic. >> i have a budget that will be coming out next week, and we will have a small amount of funds to try and help small businesses get back on their feet in this very difficult time, and we will do everything we can to simply hustle with them.
