>> increasing winds. i'll have latest coming up. >> that breaking news in the south bay. multiple fires believd to be set intentionally sent people running from their homes. fire crews are on the scene. flames came dangerously close to homes. >> police detained one person looking for other suspects tonight. the fires broke out in the foothills in south san jose. we're in the news room with the latest. >> what sa night it has been. the mandatory evacuations were dropped within the last 90 minutes. it doesn't appear any homes burned. flames came close. and we're at 20% containment. >> fire crews battle flames into the night near the foothills of san jose. crews doing what they can to save home frs the ground and

air. >> we have a large response. tier two response. which includes ten companies and dozers and full air support. >> 7:30 thursday night 25 acres burn ds and the battle was onto put it out. flames and smoke dangerously close to homes. a air tanker dropped fire retardant. some landed on homes in the area. some crews fought from above. others on the ground. cutting away dry brush. the fire came close to a large water tank in the area. 80 acres burn ds by nighttime. an arsonist maybe to blame. >> these were multiple spot fires. potentially purposefully set. we have a suspect we're interviewing and witnessed in the act. >> neighbors were evacuated during the fire fight. as of thursday night the

demonstrated solidarity with the protest kp rallies over the killing of george floyd. in livermore 200 people gathered peacefully in the park. several dozen people took part in a rally at city hall. they marred to headquarters. high school students held a rally in the neighborhood. >> also in san jose for the seventh night in a row people rallied outside city hall. a sizable turn out. people had drinks and snacks to hand out. curfew expired at 5:00 this mrning. meaning there's no curfew tonight. >> in san francisco there was a mobile protest. caught up with the caravan of cars that drove through the streets hor streets honking for all to hear. >> car after caroz upon dozens lined up in td park for the start of a caravan protest. motorcycles lined up too.

next to the protestors who had a message to share. >> police station the caravan through the city to make sure they drive by all the local precincts. >> we have to have a voice. it's for them. for my son. the world has to be different for them. >> most cars were filled with families and young children. >> everybody should have rights to do what want to do. >> black lives. >> i felt like we couldn't maintain social distance and still do something peaceful. >> families gathered along the route. through miles of san francisco steets. we caught up with the organizer. who said the turn out is much bigger than expected. >> we need to have our voice heard. >> it's mixed emotions.

a man swimming in very rough surf in san francisco died this evening. life guards battled high tides to rescue the 31 year-old. he died in the hospital. firefighters say he was taken to the hospital in stable condition. >> a hate filled rant targeting peaceful demonstrators including children has shaken a north bay community. we take you where neighbors rallied together for peace. and send a message racism will not be tolerated. >> don't write all over our streets and let the kids see there's hate. >> the viral video from the community of is uncomfortable to watch. >> why do black lives matter all lives matter. all lives matter. >> it shows a man going on a

even if your friends or family aren't. >> it's a mistake to think this virus is gone. it's around. we're still seeing infections in the bay area. we will see a surge if we're not careful. >> we continue to see new covid-19 cases. in every county. there are areas of concern. in alameda new cases have increased over the past three weeks. and hospitalizations have increased over the past two weeks. 27 new cases on wednesday. that's the second high etc. single day rise in two weeks. just five new cases wednesday. health officials there are saying there's been a rapid increase of covid-19 cases in low income communities. in san mateo just 17 cases wednesday. the lowest single day rise since may 17. but the lowest number of tests in two weeks were taken on that day.
