>> announcer: now from abc 7 live breaking news. right away that breaking news coming out of ben loam obd which is in santa cruz county just about 35 miles south of san jose. santa cruz police have only said it is a shooting investigation. the boulder creek volunteer fire department posted on facebook reports of multiple deputies and officers injured. a little over an hour ago we saw officers running from a scene and a chp helicopter landed on a baseball field. the santa cruz sheriff's office tweeted at least one suspect is in custody but people are being told to avoid the area of

highway 9 and alba road because the investigation is still ongoing. we have reached out to both the sheriff's office and police department for more information but so far we have no details yet on any injuries. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dion lim. >> i'm eric thomas. a black lives matter rally on the golden gate bridge became much more than organizers intended and left some drivers stopped in their tracks. abc 7 news reporter chris reyes is there now and has the story for us live. chris? >> reporter: good afternoon. organizers believe this was the first black lives matter march across the golden gate bridge. from 12:00 to about 3:00 p.m. this afternoon they marched, they cheered, they were peaceful. we talked to the 17-year-old activist who helped put it all together. this is sky 7 over the scene at around noon on the golden gate bridge. a peaceful march and a powerful turnout. one that tiana day, the 17-year-old co-organizer behind the protest, did not expect at all. >> literally this came together in less than 24 hours.

my friend made flyers and we just kind of pushed them out. >> we posted them all over social media. >> it just blew up. >> reporter: at one point the crowd filled the road, stopping traffic. >> honestly all these protests really inspired honestly. i feel like the whole youth as a whole, this whole generation, like we are really speaking out and speaking up for each other and fighting for equality and that is a beautiful thing. >> no justice, no peace! >> reporter: on the ground our own liz kreutz was on the bridge and noticed? drivers getting out to cheer on protesters. >> it was awesome. the energy was crazy. like people were just united, same going, we want to end police brutality, but also like we want systemic change. you know? >> black lives matter! >> if getting from point a to point b is more important than preventing like countless people of color from dying, from being wrongfully imprisoned, you know, from -- just excluded from financial progress, then you know, you need to think of

priorities. >> reporter: dozens of police officers were present but no confrontations. >> we're here to fight for justice. we're not here to fight. >> reporter: tiana day, who also organized this with her sister, was there with her dad. they are serious about systemic change. they told me they plan to start a non-profit, raise money for scholarships for black youth. in san francisco kris reyes for abc 7 news. >> it is remarkable it all got organized so fast. kris, many thanks to you. now, union members from around the bay area took a knee this morning in front of the former san francisco 49ers stadium. members of the seiu local 1021 and other unions held the position for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. that is the same amount of time george floyd was held down by a police officer before he died. 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick gained national attention for taking a knee during the national anthem to protest racism. nfl commissioner roger goodell now says the nfl was wrong for not listening to players

earlier. to the north bay now, where thousands of people filled the streets of mill valley to protest police bruteality and systemic racism. abc 7 news was downtown where that march began and continued down miller avenue. people we spoke with had the same sentiment, it's about time. >> it's long overdue. i think it's great to see people stepping zpup stepping out of their comfort zone. >> black lives are in danger under this justice, judicial system. and i am just enraged. >> reporter: one person we spoke with said she was pleasantly surprised to see so many people showed up. the city of santa clara and its police force are taking action. the city's mayor and police chief posted a video this morning announcing they're going to look at making changes and they invited the public's input. >> we are committing to four actions. first, we will review our police use of force policies. >> second, we will engage our community in the discussion.

>> third, we will report our findings and seek feedback from our community. >> fourth, to redefine public safety we will reform any policies necessary. >> earlier this week the mayor signed an initiative led by former president barack obama to review and revise use of force policies. san leandro police will no longer be using the carotid restraint control hold. this is the same hold that was placed on george floyd before he died. the technique is designed to cut off blood flow through the carotid arteries. san leandro has seen a number of protests and riots within the past week. meanwhile, governor newsom is also working to legally ban the hold in california police departments. while people are protesting across the nation, a memorial was held today for george floyd in north carolina. that's where he was born. abc news reporter rena roy has the story. >> reporter: it was a somber day in rayford, north carolina as friends, family and complete

strangers honored the life of george floyd. >> it's very painful. i don't know george floyd but i feel like i do because i see my brother in him. i see my nephew in him. i see my husband in him. >> it's sad that it took this for people to wake up and see what's happening in the world now. i'm glad that everybody here and paying their respects. he deserves it. >> reporter: long lines of mourners gathered to pay their respects after the 46-year-old father was killed on may 25th by former police officer derek chauv chauvin, who held his knee on floyd's neck for more than eight minutes. >> there's a lot of wonderful officers out there. but we can't afford to have not even 1%, 2% of us doing this for the wrong reason. this has to be changed. we've got to get this right. >> reporter: as his casket rolled in, hundreds held signs and chanted his name. >> george floyd. >> reporter: with thousands across the nation doing the same for days now. >> says his name! >> george floyd! >> reporter: in a desperate plea

today's headlines from the coronavirus pandemic. the graton resort and casino in rohnert park will reopen on june 18th. since it is run by a tribal government, the casino is not subject to state or county regulation. san francisco recreation and parks began registration today for its summer camp programs. next friday the state is going to allow day camps to start reopening. and the bay area now has more than 15,000 confirmed case of coronavirus. california has reported over 125,000 cases. abc 7 news is committed to help building a better bay area, focusing on your health, education, workplace and economy. and today a move to help boost the economy. three bay area counties continue to ease pandemic restrictions. here's what's allowed starting today in the north bay. in napa county wineries can reopen indoor tasting rooms with social distancing. reservations are encouraged to avoid overlaps. servers must offer customers clean glasses every time they

try different wine. bars may also reopen. in sonoma county many businesses including hair salons can reopen. restaurants can serve dinners indoors again, and tables will be spaced six feet apart. people can also attend indoor religious services. speaking of that, abc 7 news was at st. elizabeth seton catholic church in rohnert park, which is resuming services now. we watched yesterday as father thomas diaz used tape to mark the pews for social distancing. father diaz told us he's going to conduct a normal service but without music. sonoma county's health order allows for a maximum of 100 people inside a building for religious services. the third county that is relaxing restrictions starting today is on the peninsula. san mateo county now allows for outdoor sit-down dining at restaurants. libraries can reopen for curbside pickup. and you can schedule a pickup online at any of the 12 county libraries. and charter boats will be allowed to operate once again. more reopenings are just days away.

governor gavin newsom says next friday schools, day camps and campgrounds can reopen with specific modifications. however, counties will need to meet certain metrics when it comes to these next three. bars, gyms, and pro sports have the green light to open next friday as well. california will be giving specific guidance in the days ahead. it's also expected to spell out rules for hotels, zoos. double duty for some police in san jose last night. this sideshow just one of two simultaneous events that had officers on the move. just ahead, a look at a moment of solidarity during a tense encounter. also we're learning about pg&e's multibillion-dollar deal that's part of the utility's next step to get out of bankruptcy. it's been a blustery day. in fact max gust speeds of 60 miles per hour in the altmont. right now you can see still some very strong gusts around tamalpais, even close to 40

in the east bay hundreds got active together at lake merritt for a peace and wellness run. people wore black as a symbol for the black lives matter movement. organizers say the run wasn't only to promote mental and physical health but also to honor george floyd and other black people killed by police brutality. to the south bay where san jose police declared an unlawful assembly to break up a large crowd overnight during sideshows. those sideshows about the same time protesters took to the streets outside city hall yesterday.

officers say people threw fireworks and other explosives at them. >> we were seeing the sideshows, the cars spinning donuts. it's not a safe situation. we still have a responsibility to keep the public safe. and that includes everybody out here at city hall. even if you're protesting. you know, we wouldn't be able to justify just sitting back and watching while those cars spin donuts and maybe hit somebody and run somebody over and kill them. >> there were no reports of any injuries or arrests. during the protests some officers took a knee with demonstrators to show their support. pg&e is preparing an $11 billion deal that could put it on the path to getting out of bankruptcy according to a report by the "los angeles times." the package could be pitched to investors as early as next week. it's a complex deal with a mix of bonds offered by several banks and a long-term loan of 3/4 of a billion dollars. pg&e filed for bankruptcy in january of last year after being linked to numerous wildfires that have devastated northern california since 2017. the utility has to get court approval of its plan by june 30th so it can tap into a state fund that would help pay for any

only pay for what you need. ♪ liberty. liberty. liberty. liberty. ♪ weeks after filing for bankruptcy jcpenney has announced it will close 154 locations nationwide including eight stores in california. none, though, are here in the bay area. this all comes as the store was starting to reopen its nearly 500 stores that had closed during the coronavirus stay-at-home orders. the company says they will now focus on online sales. closures will happen over the next 10 to 16 weeks. getting back to normal.

off the grid will once again offer delicious food at one of san francisco's most popular areas. starting monday off the grid will launch the fort mason center food spot. but they're starting small. according to the "san francisco chronicle," it will start with five food trucks, capello's barbecue, el pastor poppy, peruvian, caribbean and izzy's cheesesteaks. that's by the end of june off the grid expects to have similar versions at more than 20 different locations throughout the bay area. all right. tossing it now over to weather. and eric, it's been nice to have francis in studio with us. >> i know. it's like the band's together kind of sort of. >> it's so weird so see people in person. >> let's look at doppler 7. it's pretty quienet terms of cloud cover. up toward chico there are quite a few thunderstorms. and i want to take you up to the satellite radar image to show you what's going on. we have this area of low pressure that's been bringing a lot of rain to washington, portland, oregon, the medford area. we're at the south end of it. an that has been allowing the winds to really whip through the bay area. so we've had gusty winds.

right now winds are anywhere between 30 to even 36 miles per hour. the strongest winds are in san francisco, novato, also concord. even napa close to 40 miles an hour. and wind advisory still in effect through tonight, until about 11:00 tonight, for parts of solano county. so be careful through the carquinez strait and the delta areas. gusts could reach up to 40 miles per hour and that could make it difficult if you're driving there, we could see some blowing debris and even some downed tree limbs and possibly even some power outages because of the wind. as they take you outside you'll see the wind blowing the trees here. along the embarcadero. temperatures have been on the cooler side of course. in san francisco it's 61. oakland 68. san jose 66. gilroy, though, at 70 degrees. and this time we're looking from emeryville out across the bay. you see the wind causing ripples across the water there. but clear blue skies. and temperatures are in the 70s and 60s. santa rosa 71. petaluma 69. low to mid 70s through napa, fairfield, and concord. livermo

livermore's dropped down to 67. here's what you can expect for tonight. temperatures will mainly be in the upper 50s. we'll still see the breezy and windy conditions especially along the coast. mostly clear conditions. and up toward the north toward ukiah, cloverdale, we could even see a few sprinkles overnight into tomorrow. now, tomorrow's temperatures will still be on the cool side. the gusts will pick up again, especially along the coast. we could still see up to 30, 35-mile-per-hour westerly winds along the peninsula coast. most temperatures in the 60s and 70s. san francisco 5:00 san rafael, richmond and oakland even san jose 7 o'degrees. the warmest spots will be antioch about 75. i quickly wanted to show you what you can expect. we're a little bit below average. we will be very warm tuesday and wednesday as high pressure builds. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. another windy day for us tomorrow. but notice the winds shift. it will be lighter on monday. high pressure builds. temperatures really climb up. it's going to be heating up tuesday and wednesday will likely be the warmest day, maybe

>> announcer: now abc 7 sports with chris alvarez. nba fans hoping to see kevin durant return to the basketball season, you're just going to have to wait until next year. he's not playing for the restart that's coming up in orlando. the former warrior and current brooklyn nets star says his season is done. he said he didn't think he was ready to play with the type of intensity needed when the league will ramp back up in july. durant of course hasn't played since tearing his achilles in game 5 the 2019 finals. k.d. signed a four-year $164 million deal last summer after leaving golden state. the warriors finished with the worst record in the nba, but is the season really over? espn reports the eight teams that did not qualify for the league's restart in orlando have proposed ideas for a regional mini summer league camps or organized team activities. the warriors are among those eight teams, but there's no indication of their interest level. the next nba season is scheduled to begin around early december.

espn also reporting the wnba is proposing a 22-game regular season at the img academy in bradenton, florida. the league was set to have a 36-game regular season in may, but that of course was altered due to the pandemic. walnut creek's sabrina ionescu was the first-round pick of the new york liberty in april. she's hoping to suit up. positive sign there could potentially be fans at the pga championship in harding park in early august. the memorial tournament of ohio set for middle of july will allow for a limited number of fans after the state governor approved that to happen. golf's first major is set to tee off in san francisco august 3rd through the 9th. we'll have our fingers crossed for that. san jose earthquakes got the okay from santa clara county to begin individual workouts this coming week. yesterday the team held a blood drive to help their community. 50 people donated at the drive. that followed expanded safety and sanitation protocols. good stuff there from our friends at earthquakes. broncos gm, former stanford star john elway said he's not going
