>> announcer: now from abc7, live breaking news. >> in my 32-year career, this is the worst day that i've ever experienced. >> our breaking news is in santa cruz county where a sheriff's deputy is dead after being shot in what investigators say was an ambush attack. they say along with guns, the suspect had improvised explosive devices. good evening. i'm eric thomas. thanks for joining us. this happened in ben lomond in santa cruz county south of san jose. the deputy was married, had one young child and another on the way. abc7 reporter lauren martinez is live in santa cruz county with more on guthwiller and the suspect who was caught. lauren? >> reporter: eric, the last time santa cruz county lost one of their own was in the early 1980s.

they said the sergeant was a beloved figure in the department. they are grieving his loss. now, the district attorney's office and the fbi are now investigating what happened this afternoon. >> today we lost one of our own and he was a true hero. >> reporter: the santa cruz sheriff's office are mourning the loss of 38-year-old sergeant damond guthwiller. a person reported seeing a van with guns and bomb-making devices. while the sergeant and another deputy began investigating the van parked in ben lomond, they were attacked. >> as deputies began investigating, they were ambushed with and improvised sf inland valleys. >> officer down at 1430. >> reporter: the sergeant was shot and taken to the hospital where he died. another deputy was either shot or struck by shrapnel from the bomb. investigators say the suspect is

steven carillo of the ben lomond. taken down with the help from neighbors. >> my daughter went after a guy being tackled. >> reporter: the sheriff says he was caught during the arrest. >> he survived and will be in the hospital. he'll be arrested for murder. >> reporter: for residents of ben lomond and surrounding communities, they've never seen so many different bay area law enforcement agencies at once. >> nothing like this ever happens here. ben lomond is a very quiet, sleepy place. >> reporter: the sheriff says this is still a fluid situation. as the department goes through this investigation, guthwiller will be deeply missed. >> in this era we're in, what you want to see in a police officer, compassion, caring, somebody who truly loves his job, who wants to help people, that's what damon was. >> reporter: now, abc7's

learned he is 32 years old, an active duty u.s. air force sergeant based out of travis air force base in fairfield. officials did not confirm if they are looking for another suspect tonight. tomorrow a vigil will be held here at the flag out front at 2:26 in the afternoon, the time that the call came in that an officer was down. reporting from santa cruz, lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> lauren, thank you very much. we were sending alerts like this one all night long as we learned new information about the shooting. if you want breaking news alerts like this in the future, the abc7 news app is free in the app store. other news now, several fires broke out around the bay area today including the quail fire burning southwest of winters. the willow fire in concord and the gulch fire south of petaluma. cal fire says the quail fire doubled to 1200 acres and is only 5% contained. we know at least 100 structures are threatened and evacuations

are underway. evacuees can go to the three oaks community center in vacaville. the willow fire was reported near east road in concord at 5:00 p.m.. the fire burned near residential neighborhoods and blocked access to highway 4 temporarily. fire crews stopped fire on 137 acres. they are keeping a close eye on the gulch fire. it started on stage road. crews contained the 200 acre fire. much joins us with a look at conditions. frances? >> that's been the toughest thing for firefighters. we'll look at conditions near the quail fire which is only 5% contained. this is just south of the ates out the gusts, up to 24 miles an hour, just changed to 18 miles an hour. it's also on the down sloping part of the hills. it's a dryer air as well.

and firefighters are going to deal with these strong gusty winds the next few hours. gusts will be over 20 miles per hour until 6:00 in the morning. tomorrow the winds relax a little bit, but then they're going to be dealing with a warm offshore flow with temperatures peaking mid week and even dryer air. eric? >> all right, frances, thank you. a black lives matter rally on the golden gate bridge today became much more than organizers intendeds. it left some drivers stopped in their tracks. abc7 news reporter kris reyes has the story. >> reporter: this is sky 7 over the scene of around noon on the golden gate bridge. a peaceful march and a powerful turnout. one that tiana day, the co-organizer behind the protest, did not expect atlly, t came ter in less than 24 hours. my friend made fliers and we media.ind of pushed epte one poi crowfill stopping ne all tse protesters really inspired,

in the north bay, thousands of people filled the streets of mill valley to protest police brutality and systemic racism. abc7 was downtown when the march began -- continued, rather, down miller avenue. people we spoke with had the same sentiment. it's about time. >> it's long overdue. i think it's great to see people stepping up and stepping out of their comfort zone. >> black lives are in danger under this justice -- judicial system. and i am just enraged. >> one person we spoke with said she was pleasantly surprised so many people showed up. cy oflar its police force are taking action. the city's mayor and police chief posted a video this morning announcing they're going to look at making changes and they invited the public's input. >> we are committing to four actions. first, we will review our police

use of force policies. >> second, we will engage our community in the discussion. >> third, we will report our findings and seek feedback from our community. >> fourth, to redefine public safety, we will reform any policies necessary. >> earlier this week, the mayor signed off on an initiative led by former president barack obama to review and revise use of force policies. pg&e is preparing an $11 billion deal that could put it on the path to getting out of bankruptcy, according to a report by the los angeles times. the package could be pitched to investors as early as next week. it's a complex deal with a mixture of bonds offered by several banks and a long-term loan three quarters of a billion dollars. pg&e filed for bankruptcy in january of last year after being linked to numerous wildfires that have devastated northern california since 2017. the utility needs to get a court approval of its plan by june 30th so it can tap into a state

fund that would pay for any future wildfire claims. tonight research by mark zuckerberg said facebook should not be letting trump spread misinformation. at leading research institutions they wrote zuckerberg to ask him to consider stricter policies. the author wrote the spread of misinformation goes against their research. this comes after zuckerberg's decision to not flag posts in response to the george floyd protest. if you were near the golden gate bridge yesterday and you heard some musical tones, your ears were not deceiving you. that was the privilege starting to sing. the 83-year-old golden gate bridge has been undergoing retrofitting to protect it during high winds. the handrails on the west sidewalk have been replaced with vertical slats to allow more air to flow through. during high wind days like

they're gusting up to 41 miles per hour, mt. diablo still at 36 miles per hour, and we'll see the winds stay with us for another day, bringing us temperatures a little bit below average in some spots. here's a live beautiful shot, though, as we look out towards the bay bridge and the moon and winds have calmed a little bit. temperatures are mainly in the 50s. san francisco 55. oakland still hanging onto 60, though, and we see some upper 50s in redwood city and san jose mid 50s and gilroy and pacifica. i'm taking you across the bay to look at the bay bridge in san francisco. we have mostly clear skies, but notice the camera bouncing around a little bit. so we're still going to deal with those winds for another day. more temperatures for you also in the 50s. 53, santa rosa, petaluma, mid to concnd livermore. parts aai i want to show you the forecast pelong the cor 20 to 30 miles per hour.

it dies down a little bit in the after, early morning and the afternoon to evening and picks up again. and check out the winds at point reyes. 43 miles per hour. even half moon bay and san francisco, want to fly a kite, it might be a good idea to head to the beaches and do that. it will still be breezy inland around the bay near 20 to 30 miles per hour in some areas tomorrow afternoon. so tonight's lows will be dropping into the 50s. we could even see a few sprinkles, up through clover dale and ukiah. lake port. this is due to a system in the north that brought us the breezy conditions as well. and highs tomorrow will be mainly in the 60s to low 70s. san francisco 65. again, windy conditions all throughout the day at the beaches. san rafael 70. oakland 70 as well, as well as san jose. the warm est inland areas will hit the mid 70s tomorrow afternoon, like fairfield and antioch and mostly clear

conditions with plenty of sunshine. in fact, we're going to get a lot more sunshine through the rest of the week. so here's an example. in concord, our high will be 74. we're going to be in the mid 90s by wednesday. so tuesday, wednesday, thursday will be the warmest days of the week. that's because the winds will ease. high pressure will build. and we'll get a weaker on shore flow. so mondays when we start to see the lighter winds and the temperatures warm up, we really heat up inland on tuesday, hitting the 90s. the warmest day will be wednesday, mid 90s inland, around the bailo 80s. and at the coast mid to upper 60s. then the cooling begins and we'll see a cooling trend into next weekend. eric? >> frances, tnk ahead on abc7 n 11:00, bay area union members took a knee at candle stick park.

the bay area took a knee this morning in front of the old demolished candle stick park, the former home of the san francisco 49ers stadium. members of the seiu local 1021 and other unions held the position for 8 minutes 46 seconds. that's the same amount of time george floyd was held down by a police officer before he died. 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick gained national attention for taking a knee during the national anthem for protesting racism and racial violence. nfl commissioner roger goodell was wrong for not listening to players earlier. time now for sports with chris alvarez. >> coming up in sports, kevin durant says he's season is over, why the former warrior will not play for brooklyn this season. and could we see the warriors on the court sometime this summer? the report that suggests the the report that suggests the teams that didn't make the nba's

the next nba season is scheduled to begin in early december. espn reports the wnba is proposing a 22 game regular season in bradenton, florida. they were set to have a regular season start in may. that was altered due to the pandemic. the first overall pick by lady liberty in april. there could be fans at the pga in harding park in august. tournament set for july 16 through 19 will allow a limited number of fans after their state governor approved. golf's first major is set to be in san francisco august 3rd through the 9th. we've seen nascar racing for weeks without fans. indy car got their season started at the texas motor speed way, of course, with no fans. let's go to the first race of the year. you can see the new windows on those cars. nice safety measure. they held practice earlier in the day. rookie renus vekay with spin out

>> announcer: live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> good evening. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines, a sheriff's deputy is dead, killed in what santa cruz county investigators say was an ambush attack. 38-year-old sergeant damon gutzwiller and another deputy were investigating a suspicious van when they were attacked with gunfire and explosives. the suspect was caught and is expected to be charged with

assembly to break up a large crowd overnight during side shows. those side shows came around the same time protesters took to the streets outside city hall late yesterday. officers say people from fireworks and other explosives at them. >> we were seeing the sideshow, we were seeing the cars spinning doughnuts. it's not a safe situation. we have a responsibility to keep everybody safe, even outside city hall if you're protesting. we wouldn't be able to justify sitting back while those cars spin doughnuts and hit somebody and kill them. >> there were no reports of any injuries or arrests during the protest. some officers took a knee with demonstrators to show their support. in the east bay, a church in dublin hosted a prayer service this morning for peace, justice and safety during these difficult times. dozens gathered at the valley christian center parorti for blley for the violencduring for safe

delicious food at one of san francisco's most popular areas. starting on monday, off the grid will launch the fort mason center food spot, but they're starting small. according to the chronicle, it will start with five food trucks. by the end of june off the grid expects to have similar versions at more than 20 different locations throughout the bay area. snoop dogg says he plans to vote for the first time in 2020 to cast out president trump. the 48-year-old rapper says he was under the mistaken impression he couldn't vote because of his past felonies. his record has been expunged and h wants to set an example by voting in the fall election. even though he's not out in the streets protesting he's using his platform and music to spread the message. let's get one last check of the weather with frances lawson. >> it will be another great day to fly a kite. a look at doppler 7 skies, the winds are clear but winds have been gusty. they have died down a little
