>> mike, thank you. this morning, more businesses reopening in solano county. amy hollyfield live in benicia with what you can expect. hey, amy. >> hey, reggie. it appears this caught some businesses off guard. this health and fitness center in benicia says it is not ready to reopen yet even though the county of solano has given gyms permission to go ahead and reopen. take a look at this list of businesses that the county says can reopen. gyms and fitness centers, wineries, bars and breweries, family entertainment centers, zoos and museums and hotels. as long as they meet the requirements set up by the state. now, this comes as a surprise because the state has said these businesses can reopen friday. solano county originally said that, too. but now says go ahead and reopen if you are ready and have met the requirements. gyms we have checked on this morning are closed. including this one. so, be sure and check with the

business you're wanting to go to before you head that way. just make sure that they're ready and that they're open. this gym is saying they're ready and they're going to open on monday. let me know your experience. if you find any businesses you're going to go to today hit me up on twitter i'd love to hear from you and hear about your experience. reporting live in benicia, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. long held the hardest hit santa clara county is starting to see a new rise in covid cases coming from public health director dr. sarah cody. >> we're beginning to see a little bit of a uptick in the hospitalizations which reflects the easing that we did in the middle of may. >> that point coming in last night's county board meeting. dr. cody didn't elaborate on the data, but according to our partners at the "mercury news" hospital declines but have risen since last sunday. the county currently has 73

infections. and coronavirus cases continue to spike in at least 20 states, including california. abc news reporter andrea has more information on that and what goes against what was first thought. >> reporter: this morning coronavirus cases on the rise in 20 states, plus puerto rico. in arizona, the state's largest health system has reached capacity for patients needing external lung machines. >> would you say the situation right now in phoenix and arizona is dire? >> yes, it is. this is the time when we need to be speaking out. >> reporter: the state seen a record 1,500 new cases in a single day. two weeks after reopening. texas now open for more than a month also seen a steep increase in new patient admissions with nearly 2,000 hospitalized. south carolina reported nearly 550 new cases monday, the highest since the pandemic began. north carolina is seeing its highest number of

hospitalizations so far. more than 700. this upward trend prompting doctors to urge people to wear a face covering in public. >> there are a lot of nurses. the icu is very busy. so, the amount of equipment, noise, staff that is helping to take care of oour patients is more than i've seen in my 22 years of working here. >> reporter: and this morning, new information on the virus. contrary to earlier thinking. the world health organization now saying that spreading the virus when you're asymptomattic is very rare but some doctors are questioning that data. >> we do know that there is a very small percentage of patients that at the time of testing and testing positive, that they are without symptoms. so, although the risk is very low, it's not zero. so, what we still recommend is appropriate social distancing. >> abc news, new york. the oakland police department expected to provide an update today on the deadly

officer-involved shooting. the chp opened fire on a vehicle saturday night that killed a man and also shot his pregnant girlfriend. new video shows the moments right after. >> turn the car off! no, it's not. turn it off! >> this was near 96th avenue and cherry street. erik salgado died. his pregnant girlfriend was shot in the passenger seat and is now in and out of a coma. the oakland police department said salgado's vehicle is one ie vehicle stolen from a dealership. his family is demanding answers. >> if it can be preventable. 40 shots while he's in a car is pretty excessive. other ways that could have been donetleed the names of the chp officers involved in the shooting. area.

there were several peaceful events happening yesterday. people socially distanced in san francisco glenn park neighborhood. dozens showed up for a protest in richmond and also saw a rally in antioch and the public defender's office teamed up for a black lives matter march to the courthouse in martinez. in washington, a battle is brewing over how to prevent police brutality. the phrase defund the police is a rallying cry for protesters but not for lawmakers. jobina is at the live desk with more. hi, jobina. >> hi, liz. president trump and former vice president joe biden and nationwide protesters have been calling for this. demanding they are stripped of their budget to divert to other social programs. senator kamala harris appeared on "gma "this morning and says she wants to make police more accountable and invest in communities. >> you know how you create more

safety? you fund public schools and it wouldn't be the case in america today two-thirds of our public school teachers come out of their own pocket for school supplies. the way you create more safety is people have access to health care and it's affordable the way you create more safety is the jobs in the community. and economic opportunities and access to capital. >> harris went on to say lawmakers need to reexamine what they're doing with taxpayer dollars. senator harris was also asked if she agrees with a former joe biden's stance on rejecting the defunding of police department. senator harris said she went on to say reforming the police system, which joe biden does, as well. back to you, reggie. >> jobina, thank you. the private funeral service for george floyd is going to be held today in his hometown of houston. yesterday thousands of people arrived to show their respects. >> could be anywhere in the world but you're all here with us right now. this is a blessing. and this is bigger than george

so, metering lights came on at the bay bridge toll plaza around 5:55 this morning. we'll check in with a live look there and it being 5:55, we're inching closer towards a normalish commute i'd say. because before the shelter-in-place order we were seeing them and the earliest we've seen the metering lights come on since more people have begun to return to work. coming up today at noon, muni will stop all service for eight minutes and 46 seconds to honor at'sowglect on the lifefl polis pice chauvin used his knee to pin down floyd on his neck. muni operators will pull over when it is safe and allow passengers to observe the moment of silence or deboard. muni understands this will cause a delay but the agency wants to stands in solidarity with the black lives matter movement. liz and reggie? >> all right, thank you, jobina. the owner of "bon

into providing their social security numbers and health and financial information. ral contact tracers would never ask for any of that info. the cdc says some people are misusing bleach to try to fight the coronavirus. it surveyed more than 500 people. about 39% admitted to incorrectly using bleach and other cleaners and disinfectant solutions. this includes washing their food with bleach and using it on their skin. 4% said they drank or gargled bleach and other disinfectants and the cdc says using disinfectants like this could negitantly impact your health. in april the president talked about injecting disinfectants into people. do not drink bleach. >> no, don't put it on your apple. >> just don't do it. >> do you know what, if you have a question about bleach, go ahead and just put it to the side.

even warmer tomorrow and i'll show you those newest numbers coming up next. here's liz with more news. thanks, mike. new this morning san jose police are investigating a crash that put a teenager in the hospital. it happened around 10:15 last night near 33rd street. officers say a car hit a 17-year-old girl. she was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. the driver called police and is cooperating with the investigation. happening today, the san jose city council will discuss police use of force at a city council meeting comes amid the growing calls across the country to defund the police. the san francisco police chief announced some serious changes with more. hey, julian. >> good morning, liz. yeah, back lash against the san jose police department in response to some of the force used that we saw in the recent protests and now the department, as you mentioned, is announcing some changes to its policy and response to that and also the

deadly force we all saw the officers used in george floyd. now just last night chief eddie garcia of the san francisco police department announcing the department is banning the use of kneeling on someone's neck to subdue a suspect. intervene when they experience excessive force and rubber bullets are no longer going to be allowed to be used for crowd control. in today's meeting the san jose city council will consider if any of those changes are substantial enough as calls grow louder for cities to consider defunding budgets and allocating services that would try to address the root causes of crime. san jose's mayor sam liccardo made it very clear he is against the idea of defunding the police department. >> we've got to recognize that the path forward is through reform, not to defund the police. what i hear is the overwhelming call in every neighborhood meeting i'm in for more police patrol, not less.

>> he also went on to say that defunding the police would, in fact, hurt the ver that some of these changes are trying to help. mayor sam liccardo says the police department is already rather lean when compared to other police departments across the country. he is exposing expanded authority of a police auditor. that meeting set for 11:00 this morning. julian glover, abc7 news. >> julian, thank you. happening today, san francisco leaders will call on the city to ban police from using things like rubber bullets and pepper spray. hillary roanen andllce a otest safely act. it would ban certain crowd control methods used by law enforcement in response to recent black lives matter protests. the legislation would also ban any other chemical agents, as well as any other military vehicles. doctors from a major bay area medical center are joining calls to ban rubber bullets by

picture right now. you can see the fountain of praise church where it will get under way at 9:00 our time. floyd lived most of his life in houston. more than 6,000 people showed up yesterday for memorial to pay their respects to george floyd. two weeks after he died. for many, an emotional farewell to the man who has become the face of a movement and overnight people gathered for a candlelight vigil at his high school. his family says they are grateful for the outpouring of support. >> he was told, he was told he would have to sacrifice his life to bring the worth together and knowing him, knowing to he would have did it. >> he changed the world. you have to come. >> meanwhile, the former minneapolis police officer charged with murdering floyd appeared in court yesterday. the judge set derek chauvin's bail at $1.25 million. floyd will be laid to rest at

the houston memorial gardens next to his mother. liz? >> thank you, jobina. live coverage of the private service and the celebration of life for george floyd. abc news anchor david muir will be in houston. coverage is set to begin at 9:00 this morning. you can watch it here and our abc7 news app. because of the coronavirus pandemic, abc7 news is concentrating our efforts to build a better bay area into four areas. health, education, our changing workplace and the economy. starting friday, some people in california will be able to go to a movie theater. the state says theaters can open on june 12th with county approval. theaters will be limited to a quarter of cupaucity or a maximum of 100 movie goers. theaters are encouraged to take reservations. state officials also suggest they use disposable or washable seat covers andhed to keep guests at least six feet apart. require people to wear face masks when they enter and leave

the theater and at the concession stand. you wouldn't be required to wear one while watching a movie. hair salons and barbershops will reopen next wednesday. the county also says indoor dining, bars, churches, gyms, museums and hotels can reopen july 1st. on friday, the county opened up outdoor dining, swimming pools and dog parks. san francisco bar owners are pleading with the city to let them reopen earlier than scheduled. >> we're asking the mayor to allow us to open the same time restaurants do because it seems only fair. also our economic future is in the balance here and we need help. >> the sf bar owner alliance wants to let bars reopen on july 13th. right now bars that don't serve food can't have customers inside until mid august. the bar owner alliance is approximately 350 bars in san francisco did not serve food and they're, quote, teetering on the edge of professional and personal financial collapse. a road map to reopening

s reopen ahead of the state schedule. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live outside the gym in benicia with more on that. >> hi, reggie. we thought we would come here and find a bunch of sweaty people but instead the benicia health and fitness club is not open yet. they are not ready to meet all the state's requirements and they need more time. solano county has decided these businesses can open as long as they meet state requirements. that includes gyms and fitness centers and wineries and bars and breweries and zoos, museums and hotels. there was some confusion on the date. the state has said these businesses can open this friday. and solano county originally said that, too. now, the county has said businesses are ready and they meet the requirements, go ahead and reopen. call first before you show up just in case they haven't opened yet like this gym which says it plans to open on monday.

see. here's a look from yosemite 46 right now. absolutely gorgeous. as is this view from the east bay hills which is from grisly peak and about a mile from where the earthquake was and gettinga few reports on social media. people felt a quick jolt but thankfully nothing i've heard damaged so far from a 2.7 normally doesn't happen. sunny and warmer this afternoon. that's your first accuweather highlight. cooling sea breeze and warmer again starting sunday. a temperatures. today two areas of high pressure. we doubled our fun with the high pressure and added five to ten degrees on to our highs because of that. mid to upper 80s and 90 around morgan hill and gilroy and 78 in millbrae, one of the milder spots. we'll have mid to upper 60s along the coast and mainly the upper 60s and then mid to upper 70s downtown south san fran acio and sausalito and not as breezy as yesterday but it will be at the coast and that's why you're 20 degrees cooler with mid to upper 60s.

a trial is under way right now in san francisco fighting to remove fluoride from our drinking water. nearly two-thirds of americans drink water that has fluorite in it and it is supposed to help tooth decay. according to "the chronicle" some consumer groups according the fluoride network argued that recent studies show pregnant women drinking water with fluoride can harm their children. the group says it can lead to neurological damage and reduce iq and adhd. testimony began yesterday in federal court. a key part of building a better bay area is keeping care of your health. one local eye clinic is speeding up how it does exams during the covid crisis. during the stay-at-home order many are not requiring the checkups they would require. they are crucial to avoid lasting vision damage. the ucsf are bringing it to their patients with a drive-by test. >> i thought, great.
