welcome to a very special edition of "the tamron hall show" from my house. 2013, the cofounder of the black lives matter movement gave us the phrase black lives matter. three women alicia garza, patrice colors, thank you. i know a lot of people have thought that phrase was alienating, but somehow it meant that other people did not matter. and perhaps the deliberate misunderstanding of that phrase is how we got here. can you hear me now? you might remember that commercial, it was all about can you connect while talking. we now know the connection and discussing the issue of race and police brutality, somehow interrupted over and over again and now we know we always knew -- that it was a matter of
1:37 am
life and death. it's been the silent and sometimes loud plea from black people, when will you hear me, can you hear me now, how do i get your attention? that was unheard, then we saw this incredible vision over the past few weeks, a sea of young people from all backgrounds who said collectively, we are going to break through the noise, the 24/7 rightful concerns of covid 19 and economy all stuffed because the revolution would be televised and we would have to watch. there is a generation of kids that watched the towers of 9/11 fall, many of them suffer from ptsd and anxiety attacks because 19 years, imagine they watched the images of the towers fall. some of them had parents there, they learned about it in school, they watched tv 24-hour news cycle and it tore at their core.
1:38 am
the cycling of the images of the tower falling had an impact. i compare that to what black children have had to watch for many, many years, 425 years images of people dying on camera. and i was a kid, we had a photo is often shown to me till, his mother said show their body so they will never forget what happened to this child, an innocent victim of a hate crime. that was something i always grip with, now you have young kids under the age of 30 who are constantly seeing these images. recently, they saw the beginning, the middle, and the end of a confrontation involving a black man george floyd and they watched his life and on tape. what does that do to a child?
1:39 am
what does that create in one's heart? and what does that create as it relates to the change that they want? well, it created a revolution. this is a long, hard road to change. we know that. there have been so many inspiring videos that i'm sure you've shared, i have seen them, i've shared them with my friends and family. let's be real, there has been some gut punches. i saw a video this morning of two white men mocking the death of george floyd, one pretending to have his knee on the neck of the other. that is an example of why the road to change continues to be long, and it is painful. we know that. i wanted to hear from these young protesters that we have been seeing in the streets. they will be the barricade, they will be the new road to change. so were going to dig into their hearts and hear from them. take a look.

thank you all for joining me, leslie let me start with you. you heard me, i compared this, to what kids experience watching 9/11. you are at ground zero of this latest crisis of police brutality, so i think about all the videos and captured on tape that you have been exposed to all of these years, and some without consequent as of black people being killed on camera. did you ever imagine that something like this would happen where you are? >> i am unfortunately not surprised, i think black people in america, white supremacy has always been an issue for us. i think if you were asleep or has been elite, maybe you have become comfortable enough to know that this was not of a reality, the people who are still on the ground and very much affected by the melanin that they have, i don't think
