well, we do have a lot of cloud cover out there, and in fact a system is to the north of us. if we look at live doppler 7 you'll notice a few returns. this is probably in the upper levels of the atmosphere so not falling to the ground so you could see a few sprinkles throughout the extreme north bay today. but as we look further to the north there's the system and that's going to keep that onshore flow and cool temperatures with us today. it is 56 in san mateo, 54 in santa rosa. and those winds very breezy. surface winds anywhere from about 6 miles an hour to almost 15 miles an hour. upper level winds much stronger. mix of clouds and sun to low 60s. and today cooler than average. we're in the low 70s well out towards the delta by 1:00. a lot of that yellow shading stays with us. that means we're in the 60s to about 70 for the warmest locations. we'll talk about a warmer sunday in a few minutes.

>> thank you, lisa. happening today a protest o follows a hateful threat against one bay area family. protesters are rallying around them to speak out against racist behavior. it starts this afternoon. that is where a man seen here in this surveillance ilage threatened a family wearing a black lives matters shirts with violence last sunday. the family had just attended a protest in san francisco, and this is what they told us when the man approached them. >> banged the table, slammed his hands on the table, looked directly at my son and said black lives matter, he said "f" black lives, blue lives matter. "f" you "b," i'll effen shoot you. >> i'm really upset the kids were exposed to that and the effect it's going to have on them. >> the san mateo county police

are still investigating the incident and have not made an arrest. here's a look at some of the other protests happening today. at 12:30 black lives matters protest on mission bay at 4th street. a car caravan starts at 1:00 p.m. at the kaiser convention center. and at 3:00 a bay area blackout march in san francisco from mission high school to city hall. and in the south bay hundreds showed up to the san jose mayor sanlocardo's home. in this case people wantedlocardo to hear from the families of those killed by law enforcement urging him to divest in the police and invest in the community. one problem, the mayor wasn't home. abc 7 news reporter amanda del castillo has the details. >> reporter: hundreds marched and joined a sit in outside mayor san lacardo's home in san jose. their message and redirected into t coun n ise t tim we as a community we bring it to him,

not for him to speak but to listen. >> reporter: but the mayor punt home. he was at city hall on meetings and facebook live addressing his push to ban the use of rubber bullets and also responding to demands he defund the police. >> defund doesn't work in san jose. maybe other cities have tried it and it may work in those places, but let me explain why it doesn't work in the city of san jose. first, police already in san jose are defunded. >> if he was a suspect that didn't call for a death sentence i would have rather been visiting my nephew and her visiting her son behind a glass if that wasn't the case. >> reporter: relatives say these names, these 17 people have been ignored by lacardom they say recent footage of the mayor kneeling with protesters didn't

feel right. >> when took that knee that's a slap in our face because it's happening in our own backyard and you're not acknowledging the people in this community who have losted loved ones, too. >> reporter: the group's push for change continues. >> we don't want another family to walk in our shoes and want another child to grow up fatherless and not have the support services so they can grow up and be happy and thrive. >> reporter: we reached out to the mayor's office, a spokesperson said they didn't expect to release an immediate sfa an fda peaceful protest on the steps of city hall. young people coming together demanding an end to systemic racism pushing officials to make a change. abc 7 reporter luce pena has that story. >> reporter: these are the faces and voices behind this movement. >> a lot of times youth are scared and i hope this eliminates the fear and shows

that when we unify and come together we're unstoppable. >> reporter: the youngest is 11-year-old joshua peterson. a essay to describe the first time he experienced racism in school. >> he said to me, no, i don't play with black people. i felt unwanted and hurt. >> reporter: stories that resonate with many in this crowd leading the i just want to live rally is 17-year-old laura with 11 others with the naacp youth council from san francisco and oakland. >> so at my school they didn't have policies that advocated for students of policy and that was a culture that tolerated racism. >> we are the future. >> reporter: these images reminding many of thein them hope. >> what's different today is i think the conscience of america is starting to wake up. >> reporter: they demand police reform. >> diversion of funds from sfpd

towards a reparations program for the black community. our second demand is diversion of funds from sfpd towards a mental health program inclusive of the black community. and our third demand is a restortive justice program. >> reporter: and overall. >> respect. >> reporter: and these two days they're planning to come back here to the steps of city hall next friday and march from here to justice, their goal to end systemic racism. in san francisco luce pena, abc 7 news. dozens of people took to the streets of alameda to show their support for a man who was arrested for dancing in the street. we told you about that last weekend as well. this is video of the dancing yesterday in front of the alameda police department. body camera video was released last week of five police officers detaining 44-year-old

molly watkins last month. watkins says he's not angry about the arrest and wants to focus on reform. now, a group of activists protested against facebook and amazon in menlo park on behalf of the black lives matters movement. they accused tech companies of profiting. last night's protest delayed drivers near the facebook campus. and a crowd of a couple hundred people rallied at the b.a.r.t. station last night calling for police reforms. some denonetheless what they say increased state violence against people of color. many in the group protested the fatal chp shooting of eric salgago last week on saturday night. now to the focus on coronavirus. wave been keying in on industries reopening, getting our economy back up and running. it's one of several issues we're paying close attention to during the pandemic as part of our efforts to build a better bay

area. in san francisco this weekend that will be the first time to see the return of outdoor dining as many want to get out to enjoy a meal alfresco. one behind me here of some not too socially distanced groups in haze family and north beach. >> we're fighting to support and save our smallbeds in san francisco. >> mayor london breed in bay view yesterday to visit cafe envy, and this morning abc 7 news reporter kate larson shows you how other spots are ready to open back up. >> it feels exciting to finally get out. >> it's a little bit back to business as usual. >> reporter: friday night in san francisco is on. velvet ropes around tables on north beach, disposable bar ware is the go to. >> this is the first time out in probably 90 to 100 days. >> reporter: a party of six. the max table size allowed

during this new phase of outdoor dining unless you're with members of your own household. >> when they finally moved up the date it's nice to see people come out to these restaurants that need these patrons that live around here to support them. because i live here and i don't want to see them go. >> reporter: they're working hard to keep their staff and customers safe. >> we're used to these big crowds and so it is going to be a challenge. we added security to ensure that guests who have forgotten about the social distancing piece really understand they either have to have a seat or they need to move on. >> reporter: san francisco restaurants are now allowed to apply for permits to serve and dine in the public right-of-way like in the middle of the sidewalk or new parklets that have popped up in parking spots. s cis to gard and we u that parking spot to make what you see. the owner in pacific heights. >> today is bet r than yesterday

when we were just doing take out. >> reporter: but like many restaurant owners he's still concerned. >> now with the restriction we have to kind of reinvent ourselves which is not ideal. the city is not really giving us too much to work with. i don't know how the next few days are going to be. >> reporter: fortunately, san francisco appears ready to eat out. are you going to be out all weekend? >> yes, i definitely will. >> reporter: kate larson, abc 7 news. >> next friday i'll be able to dine outdoors in every bay area county. religious capacity services will also be allowed and all retail businesses will be able to open again indoors and outdoors. all right, focusing statewide california's clearing the way for several more businesses to reopen also next friday in a highly anticipated one on the list is nail salons. of course this is if your county says so. the bay area has been more conservative. there will be several new rules if they do reopen. nail polishes, for instance,

killing a san jose sheriff's. also charged with attempted murders of four other officer and a civilian. melanie woodrow details his first day in court. >> reporter: stephen carillo speaking over videoconferencing during his prosecutors say they are still deciding whether to seek the death penalty. carillo is charged with the murder of santa cruz sheriff deputy damon gutzwiler. >> the initial ambush of the officers was just that, an ambush. this individual then waited, other officers arrived at the scene, ambushed them by shooting at them and literally came up behind their car and ambushed them and tried to murder both of those individuals. >> reporter: neighbors helped take down carillo.

>> my client charged with these heinous offenses, this case is . >> reporter: carillo's attorney confirmed he was an active duty air force sergeant and has suffered personal family loss and a traumatic brain injury which he says was not service related. >> i am not aware of what impact these things may have on the case. i'm simply pointing out that there are more colors to mr. carillo and what his possible motivation and what his involvement is. >> reporter: he also said carillo has expressed sadness over what this has done to the community and families involved. they wouldn't comment on carillo's connection if any to the federal officers shot in oakland. carillo's arraignment was put over until july. investigators say they're still looking into what if any connections carillo may to other groups. the biggest question of all. >> why would someone do this the. >> reporter: for the i-team, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news.

>> the fbi released a brief update on their investigation. it said the fbi's evidence response team has completed processing the crime scene and two white vans in ben lomond and cleared the scene. a crucial piece of our four main focuses in building a better bay area through this coronavirus pandemic your health and the key to ensure we all get back and healthy. this morning a new stanford university study says testing yourself may be just as effective as one from a medical professional. patients were tested from self-swabbing samples they collected themselves with that kit you see right here. they were again tested again at a community test site. and as we know covid-19 is creating new puzzles for businesses trying to think of new opportunities to grow through the crisis. as part of abc 7's effort to

help build a better bay area this morning we focus on the changing workplace at one factory that's been carving out t.roundbreaking project made thee out of recycled cardboard and old newsprint. >> reporter: the bottles come in a ranges of sizes and shapes around a thin plastic liner, a big change from traditional bottles. >> we use between 60 and 95% less plastic. >> reporter: oakland entrepreneur the founder. we first told you about her eco friendly bottles a couple of years ago. now we're back to see how this startup is adapting in the era of covid-19. >> what we had to do was become more flexible. >> reporter: packaging companies like eco logic are considered essential businesses. but it still took some twists and turns to keep the factory running. >> it's unfamiliar territory.

>> reporter: first there's social distancing. the factory now has a redesigned work flow to keep workers apart, but it's not always possible. >> one of the challenges around the new social distancing ruleicize we have equipment that wasn't designed originally to have people 6 feet apart. >> reporter: so in those cases eco logic has installed plexiglass barriers to help protect work mfrers. >> then its sanitation. break rooms people have to be sitting 6 feet apart. >> reporter: eco logic's business is booming. >> the demand for certain products is four times what they were from the same period last year. this is a time of massive transformation. you're seeing more and more brands convert to natural products. >> reporter: and as people get more home deliveries there's more cardboard than ever that needs recycling. >> there's not a better business than taking waste like this and transforming into something of value. >> reporter: and now these cardboard bottles have another

selling point. recent studies show the covid-19 virus can last three or more days on plastic, glass or stainless steel but just 24 hours on cardboard. it's using so much cardboard that would have otherwise gone to landfills it's qualified for $5,000. >> we've defied. we have a very thriving plant here. >> reporter: dan ashley, abc 7 news. >> and those eco logic bottles are now sold in ten countries and 20,000 stores around the u.s. there have been no confirmed cases of covid-19 at the factory. all right, nursing homes across the country have been hit hard with covid-19 but a small facility in minnesota is turning tragedy into triumph. families gathered yesterday for a special ceremony to honor their loved ones who beat the virus. one by one residents made their way out to the front to see their families for the first time in months.

areas of green here. there's a weather system to the north of us so you could see a few sprinkles in the north bay throughout the day, but the main activity in the pacific northwest, and for the bay area the cloudy skies to start out with and then scattering throughout the day today. so high pressure to the north and west of us, and with this area of low pressure this brings in that steady and persistent onshore flow. the sea surface temperatures very cool, and so as a result we'll get that maline layer forming throughout the afternoon and those west winds picking up from time to time. here's a look right now from walnut creek where you'll notice the cloud cover. 55 in san francisco, also in the mid-50s in pacifica, and looking at our roof camera here with some cloud cover temperatures will be once again cool in the cities.and thg ptt

fast this morning. we go up in height and you'll notice how gusty it is from about 15 miles an hour at the oakland hills reading but up to 35 miles an hour for mt. diablo, and you can see out towards mt. tam. here's san rafael. so cloudy and breezy this morning, cool and breezy this afternoon, a mix of clouds and sun. but we get into sunny and warmer conditions tomorrow as the system to the north and west of us slides over to the east of us, and we'll get behind it, and that's going to bring sunnier conditions. so a look at the winds throughout the day today. i notice they're as we'll look at them from the west. here we are noontime about 15 miles an hour. up at the coast really not as will pic u s yesterdayspite ths as we get towards the early part of a look at that system

looking at that very light rainfall. as we get into the afternoon we'll clear out the skies. the clouds come back tonight, that marine layer and getting into your sunday starting out with the clouds and finishing with the sun. as we look at monday temperatures rebound to the 70s and 80s as we get towards tuesday, that summer spread, 60s at the coast. near 90 inland. the warming continues on wednesday and even into thursday. so highs today, coolest out of the week with the low 60s in the city, upper 50s half moon bay, 71 in free empty. 73 in livermore. that's certainly cool this time of year and the accuweather seven day forecast shows that steady warming trend taking us through wednesday and thursday, erdo we'll0 grs or inland valleys, something more typical for this time of year. >> this is my kind of weather. brand new b.a.r.t. destinations in the bay area. its first passengers walking through the gates this morning.

low clouds and also mid and high level clouds. that sun coming up at 5:47 so already light out there. you can see the city beneath there where it is 55 in san francisco, 60s in oakland with 40s in gil roy. low clouds, mid-level clouds and high clouds. mid-50s for most there. 58 in concord. wi t onshorelo it's going to be cool and breezy today. in fact you can see that color into the east bay getting a little gusty in our east bay valleys. 10:00 a mix of clouds and sun. look for upper 60s to low 70s for most of our warmest temperatures. notice to the north more clouds. that's that system. could see a few sprinkles well into the north bay today. and so your cooler saturday shapes up like this, but your sunday is warmer. the warming trend continues for part of the week ahead. we'll talk about it coming up.

liz? >> thanks, lisa. this morning the cdc out with a grim new warning predicting as many as 25,000 more americans could die from the coronavirus between now and the fourth of july. this, of course, as multiple states see covid-19 deaths and hospitalizations on the rise. abc news reporter careena mitchell has the latest. >> reporter: as streets and businesses once again fill up so are many of the nation's hospitals. a new abc news analysis finding daily deaths from the coronavirus increasing in 13 states. hospitalizations on the rise in at least eight states including texas. according to the governor's medical experts the sharp increase there may be attributed to memorial day gatherings and packed protests. >> some people don't know that the coronavirus is not gone, and they're treat tg like i>> rep h ficial near houston saying reopening was not their idea. >> the reopening was happening faster than what we locally would have liked. >> reporter: the cdc now with a sobering warning that as many as

140,000 americans could die of the virus by independence day. the institute releasing new guidelines telling people if they attend large events to check beforehand if staff will wear masks, and if you're attending a cook out they suggest bringing your own food in addition to wearing a mask and social distancing. dr. anthony fauci stressing any crowded place is risky when asked about the president's upcoming rally and ongoing protests. >> the best way that you can avoid either acquiring or transmitting infection is to avoid crowded places, to wear a mask whenever you're outside. >> reporter: his warning coming as a second visitor from one of these massive memorial day pool parties in the ozarks now test positive. and as cases around the country are going up so are cancellations. the new york state health commissioner canceling summer sleep away camps fearing social distancing will be difficult. oregon pulling back from easing restrictions after cases jumped.

their governor delaying reopening applications by one week. >> we don't make the time line. the virus makes the time line. >> reporter: and as an added precaution the department of transportation now distributing 100 million cloth face masks to airports, transit agencies and amtrak in an effort to keep passengers safe. nbc news, new york. and in san francisco the christopher columbus statue has been vandalized again. you can see where vandals painted over the statue's hands and face with red paint. the statue has been vandalized numerous time over the years. others representing figures with questionable pasts have been vandalized or toppled around the country this week. of course this debate over controversial figures comes in the midst of the larger fight for equality and racial justice. now some 1,700 monuments around the u.s. are in question. here's abc's marcus moore.

>> reporter: the battle over symbols of the confederacy sweeping the country. >> out of an abundance of caution we are taking down the statue. >> reporter: pulling a confederate statue nicknamed johnny reb to the ground. also in virginia this week protesters taking a sledgehammer to the head of this confederate monument, another symbol of division, christopher columbus. statues of him vandalized in miami, even beheaded in boston targeted over the explorer's treatment of indigenous people. >> this stud is important for us, for our kids. >> reporter: across the country more than 1,700 confederate symbol still stand. the mayor announcing he'll relocate these statues to commemorate juneteenth. jacksonville going one step further ordering all confederate

statues removed. this over the fight of renaming military bases named for confederate soldiers continues. the president dismissing the idea, but some republicans breaking ranks. >> if you want to continue to name forts after soldiers there have been a lot of great soldiers that have come along since the civil war. >> reporter: city officials here in dallas are asking the court to remove the monument you see behind me and move it to storage. marcus moore, abc news, dallas. and thousands of protesters in seattle are hoping to re-claim their message of black lives matter since police boarded up and retreated from a police station. some say too much focus has been on the station and police instead of their movement. protesters say arsonists are taking advantage of the demonstrations to set fire to the station, but organizers are helping to put those flames out by carrying fire extinguishers and even weapons. >> yeah, because i'm peaceful, not harmless. >> so show us what you've got

strapped to your leg. >> washington is an open carry state. protesters say they only started taking their guns with them once they heard that white supremacists were also showing up. happening today president trump set to deliver the west point draesds. meanwhile the president is returning to the campaign trail next week. he announced his rally will be moved from june 19th to the 20th, so it does not coincide with the juneteenth holiday. it's a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the u.s. and in tulsa, oklahoma, just blocks away from the site what is believed to be the deadliest incident of racial violence in american history. senator kamala harris tweeted this isn't a wink to white supremacists. he's throwing them a welcome home party. interesting to see what happens next week. all right, hard to believe but some out there are using puppies to exploit the pandemic, but next 7 on your side attacks what's going on. we look into that.
