business owners who are frustrated. >> reporter: plywood is going up outside mark's paint mart on telegraph avenue where six win des were smashed friday night by vandals. >> makes no sense. >> reporter: his family-owned business started in 1973, has never been targeted. >> we're just back open and getting busy again, and now this happens. it just, it makes no sense. >> reporter: oakland police say groups of vandals are responsible for the damage. . paint store security camera capture add group outside the store setting fires on the street. they were scraping paint off the floor after vandals broke in, dumping paint inside the store and out. >> basically, they just va vandalized the street, sidewalk, broke the glass and paint everywhere inside. >> reporter: at least a half-dozen businesses were

shoveling glass. which includes a business proudly supporting marches and demonstrations. >> i know there's a lot of anger, and it's sort of a perfect storm right now. it's understandable and foref f forgivable. >> reporter: neighbors were helping clean up the damage. >> especially if you support what's happening, right? like the movement in the country, black lives matter. >> reporter: the cleanup could take days. one oakland city councilman tells me he has toured the damage, calls it unnecessary and counter productive. >> does not help the cause at all. it distracts from the cause and harms local businesses. >> reporter: police are ivestigating. meantime, the big clean up goes on. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. thousands turned out for a black lives matter rally in the east bay today. >> no justice, no peace!

no racist police! no justice, no peace! no racist police. >> a coalition joined forces to march from the b.a.r.t. station to the plaza. the seiu organized the event to protest systemic racism they say is plaguing the workforce. protesters chanted the names of people who have been killed recently by police, including brionna taylor and george floyd. >> we recognize the responsibility to make sure what happens in this country stopped yesterday. gor george floyd was the last one. >> they are calling on them to be more civiledredruirect funding. . bay area blackout began with a peaceful rally at 3:00 p.m. at

mission high school. the group then marched to city hall. organizers called on students, educat educators and community leaders to join in the march. all were encouraged to wear black. this is one of four organized rallies. civil rights attorney john burris is leading an event honoring shawn montrosa.montros. this a an officer shot and killed him earlier this month at a looting sko scene at a walgreen's. they say he had dropped to his knees, and had a hammer in the waist band that an officer mistook for a gun. the family of george floyd is planning to file a lawsuit against the four officers who were there when he died. died.

they were asked about derek chauvin receiving of pension benefits. he could receive more than a million dollarsna be in benefit he is convicted. meanwhile, a police chief in atlanta resigned. the shooting happened during a confrontation where a suspect reportedly grabs an officer's taser. the mayor says she believes this was an unnecessary use of deadly force. new developments this afternoon. people will have a lot more options in san francisco for in-store shopping starting monday. west field san francisco center on fifth and market street announced it is reopening this monday. masks are required at all times.

the mall will limit capacity and have crews clean more frequently. shoppers will also notice hand sanitizer and hand washing stations. the chronicle reports that stones town galleria will also reopen on monday. leaders in san mateo county are pushing for a faster reopening in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. supervisor david leading the charge. much of california has moved into phase three of reopening. san mateo was one of the first to implement shelter in place orders in march. they say residents have changed behaviors and now they're ready to bring back the economy, including restaurants. >> we have to make sure that the restaurants survive. we know the revenue is down 60% to 90%. if they don't dine out, they

will die out. >> now if governor newsom gives san mateo county the green light, restaurants could reopen for indoor dining. so could hair salons, movie theaters and gyms. dentists in the east bay are getting help with safety equipment as they head back to work. the alameda county dental society is distributing equipment. they gave out masks and gloves and face shields to dentists in san leandro. the ppe was donated by the office of emergency services and fee fema. >> we're 14 inches away from a patient. and that is our normal working space. so we get a lot of stuff that can come off of patients, and a lot of stuff can get onto a patient. we have to make sure we keep everybody safe and healthy. >> ppe materials will be given out tomorrow to dentists in emeryville and oakland and

alameda. the cdc now says as many as 25,000 more people could die by independence day. the cdc has published new guidelines, urging people to wear a mask and maintain social distancing rules. avoiding large, in opini-person gatherings is also important. florida, washington and arizona are seeing huge increases in positive cases. utah and oregon have put reopening plans on hold. texas is still moving forward, even though the state's hospitalization rate has jumped 42% since memorial day. >> some people don't know that the coronavirus is not gone. and they treatin' it like it's gone. >> nearly 115,000 people across the u.s. have died from the coronavirus. tonight, arson -- >> well, arson -- it

welcome back. governor newsom gave a commencement speech to graduates of his alma mater, santa clara united states. this was provided to abc 7 news by santa clara united states. he shared his words of wisdom virtually, joking that it was very different from what his graduation looked like. he also spoke about the foundational principle that we are of many parts but one body, something we desperately need to recognize. >> dr. king picked up on that, so we're all bound together by a web of mutuality. the work thaw dt you did to get this point shows that we're all

project in 2000, and a couple tax measures have been passed since then to bring the system to san jose. now here are the two new stations offering service. this is the milpitas station off mont gu expressway and a couple blocks blocks from 680. this is just about halfway between 680 and highway 101. the next phase is expected to start in 2022. and turning our attention to weather. it was so wind ey yesterday i could barely walk. a different story today. >> thankfully, the winds not as strong. it's breezy, but yesterday was certainly the windiest day on the forecast. live doppler 7 showing you most of us have sunshine in our sky, however. you could see in the north bay, from santa rosa points to the

north towards clover dale and ukiah, a lot of cloud cover, even isolated drizzle associated with an area of low pressure that's going to skim through here overnight tonight, bring us increased cloud cover and the chance for early morning coastal drizzle. you can see the latest information, more than half of the state is in some category of drought right now. you can really see northern california is hit the hardest. as we zoom into the bay area, you can see a majority over the reasonable, either in moderate if not severe trout rigdrought . this is coming off a winter below average and theumrtime well don't a ooksike we're we've already seen small brush fires, numerous ones over the last several weeks. an onshore wind is keeping our temperatures only in the 60s and 70s. 22 the current wind.
