video of a deadly officer involved shooting. thank you for joining us. >> abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez was at today's protest and has more. >> reporter: protesters invested their saturday afternoon marching to the vallejo police department where family members listed off the names of their loved ones they say died at the hands of vallejo police. >> this is the pain that they've caused. can you hear us now? >> reporter: vallejo police shot 22-year-old sean monterosa after he dropped to a kneeling position outside a wal-mart tuesday. his sisters demanded release of police footage. civil rights attorney john burris say they have 45 days to d so but the public and had family have a right to know what

happened. >> i met their family, the mother and father. this is shocking to them. if they saw the video they may have a different view about all this. because the cameras themselves can be helpful to them. they can be hurtful, too. and see for me i'd like to know. >> reporter: burris says since the death of george floyd there have not been fewer confrontations with police. he's currently handling two shooting cases. >> what i want the police to understand is we are human. what if it was your child, your daughter, your son. >> reporter: impassioned protesters marched back to city hall, later in the evening gathered for a vigil at the walgreens where he was shot june 2nd. an officer thought he saw the butt of a handgun. that turned out to be a hammer tucked into the pocket of sean's sweatshirt. >> the last text he sent out was to get people to sign a petition regarding george floyd. so he was a young man cognizant of the social

that unbeknownst to him moments later his legacy was going to be part of tchanging police violence. >> reporter: earlier in the evening the vallejo police officers association posted this on their facebook page. it reads, quote, it should be concerning to people that small children are brought to protests with open air marijuana smoking, foul, vile language, screaming angry mob mentality and profound anger directed at the police. how to have a civil discussion is what adults should be teaching children. now, it's not clear if they were referring to the protests today. thank you sore new at 11:00 tonight a san francisco man has filmed the latest viral video. a white couple confronted him about a blackte message he'd stencilled in chalk

she knew this would wash away in the rain. >> and you don't know if i live here or this is my property. >> reporter: but it turns out james juanillo does live here. his neighbor who owns the property where he lives says he doesn't know this couple. >> she just claims she knew the owner of the house. well, she doesn't know me. >> reporter: juanillo said he felt attacked and encouraged the couple to call police. >> they recognized me, i recognized them. they did not even get out of the car. >> reporter: birch box make-up subscription company has confirmed the woman in the video is the ceo of -- skin care. in a statement they condemned her actions and cut ties with the company. are you willing to speak to her about what happened? >> absolutely. i'd ask her why. did dog rt >> reporter: juanillo says he hopes this video helps the community come together against racism. he says the couple returned a

second time after this incident. >> i was standing right here when they showed up and i did one of these, and i waved at them and they took off. >> reporter: we tried to contact lisa alexander and have not heard back. ensan francisco luz pena, abc 7 news. thousands turned out for a black lives matter rally in the east bay today. a coalition of labor and community leaders joined forces ridge b.a.r.t. station to the e siorzedhees for s r plaguing the work force. protesters chanted the name of people who have been killed recently by police including

breonna taylor and george floyd. >> george floyd was the last one. >> union leaders presented a list of demands to police departments around the bay area. they are calling on them to be more civilized and to redirect funding to community and social services. small business owners in another part of oakland spent today cleaning up after vandals left the path of destruction overnight. it happened in the district along telegraph avenue. police say a group of about 100 people blocked the street with trash cans and set them on fire. as officers tried to move in some people started hurling rocks and bottles at them. abc news reporter cornell bernard spent the day talking to ed.iness owners who are >> reporter: fplywood is going p where six windows were smashed friday night by vandals. >> makes no sense. >> reporter: co-owner chris says his family owned business

started in 1973 and has never been targeted. >> we're just back open, and we're getting busy again and now this happens. it makes no sense. >> reporter: oakland police say groups of vandals are responsible for the damage. the paint store's security camera captured a group outside the store setting fires on the street. staff at kelly moore were scraping paint off the floor after vandals broke in, looted dumping paint inside the store and out. >> basically they just vandalized the street, sidewalk, broke all our glass and then paint everywhere inside, destroyed. >> reporter: at least a half-dozen businesses were shoveling shattered glass including non-profit east bay depot for creative reuse which proudly supports recent marches and demonstrations. emily andthere's a lot of angee

james chen were helping cleanup the damage. >> especially if you support what's happening, right, like the movement in the country and black lives matter. like especially if you support that and you're impacted in this way i think that's really tough. >> reporter: the cleanup here on telegraph could take days. one city councilman tell uzhe has toured the damage, calls it unnecessary and counter productive. >> it does not help the cause at all. it distracts from the cause and harms our local businesses. >> reporter: police are investigating. meantime the big cleanup goes on. in oakland cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> oakland police are asking for help identifying the people responsible for vandalizing businesses. they want store owners who lost merchandise to submit a report online through the city of oakland website. business owners who may have video or photos of the damage are asked to e-mail them to oakland police. they're also asking store owners to register their security cameras through the city so they can potentially access footage

abc news reporter rina roy has more. >> reporter: authorities in georgia are scouring through videos of a violent struggle that turned deadly outside a wendy's in atlanta friday night when officials say police shot and killed 27-year-old rayshard brooks after he allegedly resisted arrest. >> i don't want anyone in any circumstances to rush to any form of judgment. it's very easy to do ipthen the cases on either side. we realize there's a tremendous amount of emotion. >> reporter: officers were called to it parking lot around 10:30 p.m. with complaints of brooks asleep-in his car blocking the drive-thru. police claim he failed a sobriety test and when they tried to arrest him he resisted and was able to grab an officer's taser. in this surveillance video you can see him running away and then appearing to point the taser at the officers. >> at that point the atlanta officer reaches down and retrieves his weapon from his holster and discharges it,

strikes mr. brooks there on the parking lot, and he goes down. >> reporter: today atlanta police chief erika shields stepping down after calls for her resignation as protesters demand police reform and racial justice. >> chief shields has offered to immediately step aside as police chief so that the city may move forward with urgency in rebuilding the trust so desperately needed throughout our communities. >> reporter: demonstrators gathering near the fast food restaurant, their rally cries even louder now. >> it fueled a fire, a worse fire. we've been doing all this peaceful protesting and in the midst of that you guys are still killing us. >> reporter: meanwhile cities all over the u.s. are seeing their third weekend of mass protests over the death of george floyd. tensions rising in places like nashville and seattle where demonstrators have seized control of some areas claiming them as autonomous zones.

the georgia bureau of investigation is working with atlanta's district attorney's office to determine if improper force was used. reena roy, abc news, new york. a mendocino county native is under arrest tonight accused of using bear spray in an apparent hate crime. the attack happened this morning in bodega bay at the pinnacle gulch trail. he sprayed an asian man and a hispanic man in the face with bear spray. deputies tracked him down. the mendocino county sheriff's office and ukaya police were wee investigating two similar incidents. meantime b.a.r.t. is up and running in the south bay. b.a.r.t. celebrated today's opening of two new stations with a time lapse video showing the train taking the route. the milpitas station is near interstate 680.

it's either calm or winds are less than 10 miles per hour. winds are not an issue tonight. 62 still currently at oakland. 58 right now in the city. you're at 58 in palo alto, 61 though in san jose and 59 that current temperature in san ramon. live doppler 7 along with satellite right off the california coast you can see a little bit of a spin in the atmosphere. there's an area of low pressure right off our coastline that's going to scoot by us to the south overnight tonight. and what it will do it will add a few more clouds into our sky. so tomorrow morning we will wake up with a mixture of sun and clouds. in fact, future weather showing you as we go hour by hour tomorrow morning by about 7:00, 8:00 in the morning you can see that marine layer right along the coast, partly cloudy skies elsewhere. however, we will get a fair amount of sunshine to finish out the day tomorrow. overnight tonight we'll find partly to mostly cloudy skies. could see even a bit of isolated

drizzle right along the immediate coastline as our marine layer comes back to life. temperatures in the low to mid-50s for the most part, so not too chilly this time of year. very few spots will get into the upper 40s. break down the day tomorrow. really a transitional sky. first thing in the morning you find partly to mostly sunny skies at 5:47 a.m. and then throughout the day we'll find those clouds really breaking down for some afternoon sunshine. so by noon we'll call it partly cloudy out there, and by 4:00 we'll call it mostly sunny. and temperatures responding nicely. a little bit warmer tomorrow than we were today with spots going into the mid-70s to mid-80s. so highs tomorrow, morning clouds and after sunshine, a little bit of a breeze in the afternoon but not nearly as strong as it was earlier today. we'll hit about 79 in san jose, 74 in oakland, 68 in the city tomorrow. a little bit below average for this time of year.

well, it looks as if the negotiations between the players association and major league baseball have stalled out, but the good news is the players say they want to play in 2020. and in a statement released by executive director tony clark of the mlbpa he said it's in the goal to play since march. negotiations he says has fallen on deaf ears and now it's time to play ball just let him know when and where. now, unless something dramatic changes we're looking at potentially a game schedule of 48 to 50 games as imposed by commissioner. golf now, third round of the charles schaub challenge. jordan spieth had four birdies on the front 9 including a chip in on 2. but one over on a back 9 puts

utah and oregon have forced their governors to push back their reopening dates. texas, arizona, and florida have seen a record increase in cases within the last week with miami beaches reopened this weekend and the mayor is concerned. >> i always said when we started opening there were two paths. the path of responsibility and the path of irresponsibility, and unfortunately we're starting to see behavior that concerns me deeply. >> now, amid this uptick the cdc has published a new list of guidelines. they include wearing a mask, avoiding large gatherings where people travel from outside local areas and maintaining social distance whenever possible. goverr pointed out earlier today wearing a mask means wearing it properly. >> i also say especially to my young friends this is a mask, this is a chin guard. nobody told you to wear a chin guard. wear a mask.

>> governor cuomo is also asking everyone who attended protests to get tested. new york saw 32 covid-19 deaths yesterday. the lowest number of deaths in the state since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis. new developments tonight. people will have a lot more options in san francisco for in-store shopping starting monday. westfield san francisco center on fifth and market street announced it is reopening this monday. masks are required at all times. the mall will limit capacity and have crews clean more frequently. shoppers will also notice hand stones now galhand washing. rort reopen. only abc 7 news got a look inside at the variety of changes designed to protect customers health and make them feel safe. here's abc 7 news reporter chris

allows customers to go online to see how many people are on site at any given time. >> technology should make it easy on people or offer more choices and more convenience to people. and i think we're trying to accompany that movement. >> reporter: the acceleration of shopping mall innovation putting more people at ease. >> as we release restrictions we want to be smart about it, follow public health guidelines, but i think when the malls open up, other things open up it gives people hope that we're going to come out of this okay one way or another. >> reporter: in san jose, chris winn, abc 7 news. santa rosa is taking an aggressive approach to reopening restaurants and bars. starting on june 26th it plans to shutdown a three block stretch of fourth street in the downtown area. this will give pedestrians and customers more room and allow businesses to setup sidewalk and curbside seating. the closure is expected to run through october 15th.

leaders in san mateo county are pushing for a faster reopening in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. supervisor david canipa is leading the charge petitioning governor newsom for a health order variance. it would essentially put san mateo county in line with much of california that has moved into phase three of reopening. san mateo was one of the first counties to implement shelter in place orders back in march. the supervisor says residents have changed their behaviors and now they are ready to bring back the economy especially restaurants. >> we have to make sure that our restaurants, they survive. we know that the revenue of restaurants are down 60% to 90%. if they don't dine oute die out. >> now governor newsom gives san mateo the green light, restaurants could reopen for in door dining and so could hair salons, movie theaters and gyms.

one big city airport is unveiling new technology to help prevent the spread of coronavirus. houston's george bush intercontinental airport launched a facial recognition feature this week. now, instead of handing out a boarding pass or a phone to a gate agent a computer will scan your face and compare it to a government database before letting you board the plane. it's being used at two international gates right now with plans to expand. >> by the end of june we're going to implement it in three additional gates for a total of five. and then the plan is by october expand it to 15 gates for our international travelers. >> only one bay area airport uses facial recognition technology. mineta san jose unjailed its program a few years ago. it's used for passengers going through customs on international flights. still ahead on abc 7 news at

two tragic stories coming out of southen california tonight. the death of a black man found hanging from a tree in victorville is under investigation by the san bernardino county sheriff's department. deputies say the body of malcolm harsh was discovered on may 131st near a homeless encampment. foul play is not suspected. meanwhile the city of palm dale has released a statement officially supporting thenvesti into the death of robert fuller. the 24-year-old was found hanging from a tree near city hall earlier this week. deputies initially suspected his cause of death to be suicide. family members at a rally today say it just doesn't make sense. >> this is really crazy to all

the administration faced backlash just over a week ago when peaceful protesters were rumoved for a photo-op outside of a church near the white house. president trump today used west point as an example against racism stressing the nation's core values of unity. >> in brothers and sisters pledging allegiance to the same timeless principles to protect our country and defend our people and to carry on the traditions of freedom, equality and liberty. >> meanwhile more than 500 west point alumni from classes spanning six decades have signed an open letter reminding the 2020 class of its commitment to avoid partisan politics. all right, turning to the weather now and, drew, really starting to feel like summer. >> yeah, and it will officially be summer one week from today. and as we head towards summer we'll see some warmer numbers ove the next couple of days.

governor newsom gave a commencement speech to graduates of his alma mater, santa clara university. this video was provided to abc 7 news by santa clara university. governor newsom shared his words of wisdom virtually joking it was pretty different from what his graduation looked like way back in the day. >> dr. king picked up that we're all bound together by mutuality. there's no leak on your side of our boat. >> at the end of the speech congratulating the class saying leadership is needed now more than ever. you can get anybody. this was great stuff. >> yeah, it's a big get. and it's funny i was trying to think who my commencement speaker was. it's been a long time and mine was john carry.
