>> reporter: well, we're outside the walnut creek police department, and right now there are actually officers outside staged in tactical gear in case the protestors move toward the civic center and it gets out of town hoff o-- out of hand. but in the past hourhe protestors have actually been up the hill in a neighborhood in front of the walnut creek mayor's house. let's take a look. all right. and you can see, actually, the protestors about 150 to 200 of them, according to the walnut creek police, were outside the mayor's house in the area of her driveway. there is also video of what appears to be a burning blue lives matter flag. the walnut creek police department anticipated the group was going to walk down to the walnut creek police department, but so far they have just been in the neighborhood. this is after seem cryptic social media messages were sent

around today which actually started to concern a number of the businesses because walnut creek police alerted the businesses that it was possible that there was going to be looting late tonight. so here is the mayor, who we spoke to -- dan ashley spoke to her about what she had to say. >> i believe that black lives really matter. i believe that this is a turning point in our country's history, and if the protestors can manage to stay peaceful, then i am hoping that it will actually do some good. >> reporter: so, we are here on main street right now, and there's busiss, w blockhe st the.when arrivedhith weoag u. take a look. many of them had just reopened this week and they were there nailing their windows back up in case this protest turned to looting later this week. a lot of people concerned after

what happened in walnut creek about 2 1/2 weeks ago. i spoke to some of the business owners about that today. >> took our boards down just today. we are putting them back up to be safe. i'm so 100% behind the black lives matter movement, but i'm trying to stay grounded, but i am frustrated that i've worked so hard to save my business over the three months of the pandemic and, yes, to just get reopened and then have to be boarding myself up several times since reopening in ten days is a little overwhelming. >> it's just surreal. it's hard to believe that we're living in a time like that this is actually happenin,u ow i unrsndls reallsad.ar t r cont happen. >> reporter: there are also walnut creek police officers staged at the broadway plaza shopping area tonight. i've seen them there all night. there's also a number of security officers and police officers inside the apple store, for example, all very concerned,

but so far we know that these protesters have stayed in the neighborhood. we'll be keeping an eye out on this and letting you all know what happens. we do know right now police are also shutting down parts of ignacio valley boulevard as the protesters are still in that area. for now, that's the latest here live in walnut creek. i'm kate larson, back to you. >> all right. kate, thank you for that update tonight. we have seen hundreds of rallies across the bay area and the nation in support of black lives matter. tonight, however, hundreds rallied in napa to show their support for law enforcement. abc 7 news reporter j.r. stone is in napa and hasoforceme c frm esy ening in napaor an event called "we back blue" in support of officers and deputies. >> what happened to george floyd was wrong. but to say we're going to defund

though -- >> i support the police and fire department. >> reporter: -- the crowd here was dominated by support for law enforcement. in napa, j.r. stone, abc 7 news. ♪ ♪ and tonight in oakland, an event billed as a black and brown solidarity march. the youth-led march went from mosswood park to city hall where there were also some performances. organizers are calling for defunding the oakland police department, among other things. in the north bay sk was o theoulerd ramp to 580. police kept an eye on things. the protest comes as more than 5,800 people have signed a petition to rename the boulevard due to drake's connection to the slave trade. abc 7 news is working to build a better bay area every day, and one thing we are following closely is the economy, of course, as the bay

area starts to reopen for business, we are here to navigate the new rules and new realities of this strange time. in san mateo county, unexpected news in the middle of the afternoon. effective immediately, most businesses were given the go-ahead to reopen. today's surprise announcement really did catch many off guard, and as abc 7 news reporter amanda dell castilio explains, the rush is on to back to normal. >> reporter: effective immediately, salons, bars, barber shops,asinos aor get the green t reopen. but is everyone ready kwsh this casino still closed. staff says it's working to reopen. others are in the same boat but thrilled they have the option. >> it gives people the ability to move forward. and then at the same time it gets people back to work. >> reporter: in daly city, new chairs just arrived at black an waitg toays the news moves up his reopening timeline.

now the rush is on to get back to business. >> the date that they told us was july 13th, so obviously we're trying to get stuff ready. we bought new barber chairs. we've been clearing out our waiting area and everything is appointment only. >> reporter: at lisa's mexican restaurant, customers can finally sit down for a meal. >> people come in and say, i see the restaurant different, and are you ready to open? i says yes we are. >> reporter: mario santa cruz says part of operating safely is opting out of table dedoor. the return to ready fit in san francisco means much smaller class sizes. reopen guidelines require businesses to implement social distancing and to develop health and safety plans. >> we just got to position ourselves with the mandates and the criteria. >> reporter: by wednesday evening about a dozen people were back working out. rrd out coming into the istancel gym. and that's why we're trying to make it as safe as possible. >> reporter: family entertainment in fitness

centers, hotels and museums can also reopen. in san mateo county, abc 7 news. it's going to be a busy week all around the bay area. on friday in adam-- sonoma county will reopen to tourists on friday. that means hotels will be operating. people can book vacation rentals and camp grounds will be available for overnight stays. personal case businesses in solano county can open on friday. nail salons, spas, massage therapy and tattoo parlors as well. in the south bay, the santa clara county sheriff's office is now investigating recent threats against the county's top public health official. she has been criticized to taking a cautious approach to reopening. she's not alone. statewide, seven public health officers have quit since the start of the pandemic. the president of the santa clara board of supervisors says she understands the challenges faced

she is pregnant. she and the sergeant also have a 2-year-old son who received his father's badge today. >> i pray for the investmestren raise the amazing children he would have raised. thank you to our community, the community that damon loved so much. and died defending. >> very emotional day. gutzweller was 38 years old. he'd been with the sheriff's office since 2006. he was killed and another deputy injured on june 6th in what investigators say an ambush attack. one suspect was arrested and facing charges. developing news hours after a fired police officer was charged with felony murder after shooting a black man in the back. the department says it's exeriencing an unusual high numbers of call-outs. cnn reports atlanta police officers aren't responding to calls inhre gh the department s. 11 charges were announced against officer garrett rolfe. he shot and killed rayshard brooks after police say he

resisted arrest, took a taser from an officer and then appeared to pointed it at police. >> i don't know what i would have done if i had seen it for myself, but i felt everything he felt just by hearing. >> rolfe's lawyer says his client feared to his life after hearing a sound like a gun shot and seeing a flash. the second officer at the scene devin brosnan faces three charges, including aggravated assault. new developments. people are placing messages on a tree where at least one rope described as a noose was found yesterday. messages include much love, stand together, treat us the way you would like to be treated, and black life not only matters, it is essential. paper was left at the bottom of the tree,ng w inructions. the tree has also been painted. there has been so much emotion about this and confusion. because of the ropes over the and while mayor libby schaaf has called for a hate crime investigation, those who put the ropes in the trees say they were

there for exercise. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony has the story. >> these symbols are symbols of racial violence and it's incumbent on all of us to have that sensitivity, to have that knowledge. what a privilege for those of us that don't feel complete fear and terror when we see a rope in the tree. >> reporter: oakland mayor libby schaaf is so alarmed by the video she saw of a rope that looked like a noose in a tree at lake merit, she's calling for a hate crime investigation. >> the intentions will matter with regard to whether or not this is prosecuted as a hate crime, but intentions don't matter when it comes to izg the. >> reporter: porsha is the woman who shot the video of the rope and posted swinging, it caught my eye. caught me off guard. >> reporter: but this man, victor, told us the rope is part of a rigging used by him and his friends as part of a larger

swing system. he each shared this video of it in action with a.bc 7 news. >> out of the hundreds and dozens and thousands that walked by, nobody thought it looked anywhere close to a noose. folks use it for exercise. you know, it was really a fun addition to the park. that we tried to create. >> reporter: he told us this small piece of rope still up in a tree is all part of the same system. still, for many people the image of anything that looks like a noose stirs up intense emotion. >> these are acts of hatred and our country is experiencing that right now, but oakland is about diversity and equity. >> but it's unfortunate that a genuine gesture of just, you know, wanting to create a good time got misinterpreted into something so heinous. >> reporter: in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. new at 11:00, ebay says it's updated its list of offensive material that can no longer be sold on its website, and that

includes racist, anti-semitic or otherwise demeaning portrayals like aunt jemima memorabilia or lawn jockey statues. major corporations are now committing to changing product branding that's based on racial sereotypes. that includes aunt jemima, uncle ben and mrs. buttersworth. >> black history experts say the rebranding of longtime food brands is long overdue. >> quite honestly, the first thing that came to my head was it's about time. >> reporter: karissa is an associate professor of history at chapman university. while she applauds the companies for making progress, it's surprising for this to come long after the abolishment of slavery, the civil war, the civil rights act and jim crow. >> these events in the last couple of weeks for companies to wake up and say, oh, perhaps our current product brands are

feeding into an ongoing stereotype and understanding. >> reporter: cal state fullerton associate professor anthony sparks is also a show runner and executive producer on the show "queen sugar". >> it speaks to this moment that is an undeniable moment about forward movement and forward conversations. >> he says these caricatures have become a part of pop culture, showing how imbedded they are in society. >> what does it mean that we have been so okay overall as a society with placing these images out there? >> reporter: the quaker oats company, a subsidiary of pepsi co-announced the move today, saying we recognize aunt jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype. while work has been done to update the brand in a manner that is appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough. mars incorporated wrote, as we listen to the voices of consumers, especially in the black community, and to the voices of our associates worldwide, we recognize that now

is the right time to evolve the uncle ben's brand, including its visual brand identity, which we will do. and late today, another famous pancake syrup brand announcing it is reviewing its packaging. the makers say they stand in solidarity with black and brown communities and acknowledge their packaging, which is supposed to evoke images of a loving grandmother may be interpreted in a way that is inconsistent with its values. mars incorporated says it doesn't know the exact changes for uncle ben's or the timing that comes with those changes. as for aunt jemima, pepsico says changes will come as early as october and a name change announced after. now your accuweather forecast with sandhya patel. >> hi there, everyone. temperatures came up today and it's going to be even warmer tomorrow. takea look as to why. high pressure is building. and with that ridge building, sinking air underneath that area of high pressure is keeping our skies clear. so tomorrow do expect the

a fire burning at a recycling plant near the port of oakland and jack london square is under control tonight. it broke out at 4:00 this afternoon. firefighters say there were no injuries. the cause is still under investigation. san francisco police are warning of another mountain lion sighting. around 7:20 tonight they tweeted the big cat was spotted in the east cut neighborhood. police say the animal is likely confused and lost. we can't be sure if it's the
