will get left behind. president trump temporarily ban foreign workers in an attempt to make more jobs available for americans. but silicon valley leaders say this will undermine the tech industry. >> foreign-born workers make up 60% of all tech workers in silicon valley. so, this represents a very serious threat to the workforce. >> the concern is that talented workers will go to companies in other countries. the ban on new visas is an extension from the one thatid i april. it is temporary. the plan is to have it in place now until the end of the year. reporting live in san mateo, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you. some stunning numbers from governor newsom as he is addressing the record high numbers of new covid-19 cases. he says more than 46,000 californians tested positive in just the past two weeks. that's more than a quarter of all known cases since march.

cases. abc news reporter alex presha has more. >> reporter: with 2.3 million cases and 120,000 deaths, the nation's top health experts are warning the coronavirus pandemic could get much worse. dr. anthony fauci and other experts will testify before the house today stating covid-19 activity will likely continue for some time and if there is covid-19 and flu activity at the same time, this could place a tremendous burden on the health care system. utah is dealing with a burden of its own after partially reopening a state public health official is warning that a new surge in cases could force a complete shut down. the virus is rising in 23 states and puerto rico. 12 states have hit records nobody wanted. their highest levels of coronavirus ever. texas is one of them. the infection rates have doubled there, so have hospitalizations. >> we are moving very fast in the wrong direction. >> reporter: the governor's

a middle school in san jose is back aer months of being closed because of coronavirus. sunrise reopened schools for summer school. there are no more than 12 students allowed in each room. usually the school's summer program includes field trips and outdoor activities and this time around students will be kept inside for the most part. students get to leave to wash their hands for lunch, but they will eat their meals in classrooms. speaking of school, four of them in san francisco could be renamed because their namesakes are now under scrutiny. you see them here on this map. we'll start with june muir and then george washington and john muir elementary which may be renamed for maya ang lieu who became the first and francis scott key and an official name change resolution could be filed at a school board meeting next

month. the ft. bragg city council has voted not to put a measure . instead they decided to form a committee to further discuss this. last night people on both sides of the debate expressed their frustration. >> and if you don't change the name, i will swear to you, i will run for city council and i will fight for the name change. for the indigenous rights and for the rights of the people of color and the rights of minimum wage workers. >> we have more serious problems than thinking about changing the name of this wonderful town. i didn't even know who the hell braxton bragg was until 2015 when everybody started bringing him up. >> the city council rejected the same idea in 2015. all right. let's take a look at what is

going on. start with neighborhood temperatures and go down to the south bay where we have few clouds streaming in and temperatures low 60s. san jose right there at 59 and 61 in cupertino and mountain view for the warm spots. and else where we have 62 at redwood city and you can see pretty much mid to upper 50s everywhere. brentwood one of our warmer spots. here's a look, again, at some of those clouds as you look northbound. that's where the clouds are coming in from as they spill into the bay, once again. your activity planner just caution. smallcraft advisory breezy and choppy out on the bay and better for walking the dog, especially in our hotter neighborhood today and exercising is going to be seasonal, too, if not hot. especially in the east bay and the south bay. some of our milder temperatures the peninsula barely getting up to 80 this afternoon for a couple hours. a lot of mid to upper 70s with sunshine this afternoon and a few clouds this morning to start the day. here's a look at the east bay. 62 at 8:00 and already 70 at 10:00 and hang out in the mid to upper 70s from noon through 6:00 but check that out.

the summer spread shrinks as heat relief for our inland neighborhoods. here's a look for our summer spread. i ink the it's about the same as yesterday. it's about 2,000 feet. it's going to go away just as quickly and maybe stay along the coast a little longer where we had a few breaks in the sunshine yesterday and that's it as far as your fogto upper 80 tough mof the south bay with 86 today in cupertino. we have 80 in redwood city and palo alto and that's as warm as it gets on the peninsula. 61 to 64 on the peninsula coast and 66 in downtown and 68 in south san francisco and low to mid 60s and sausalito. look at that upper 60s to low 70s through the north bay and the southwest breeze does not make it to cloverdale or ukiah. 92 to 102 there. keeping richmond, oakland and berkeley comfortable. we have upper 70s to low 80s else where and as you move inland, how about low to mid 90s.

yes, that is the hottest temperatures. tonight back in the 50s in most narnd neighborhoods. let's talk about what is going on with the accuweather seven-day forecast. couple degrees warmer wednesday, thursday and by friday we reached the peak with summer sizzle and heat starts to moderate and for the rest of us sunday and monday. >> mike, thank you. in the east bay, a warning about a robbery spree. thieves are following people home from banks in alameda. police say the latest incident happened on kauffman parkway near shannon circle. the victim was in the garage when the two robbers approached. they described them as men but that is it. no details released so far. momolicios was found in oakland. it was stolen in emoryville. about 30 minutes later, someone took the truck. the owners didn't give specific details about where the truck was found in oakland, but they did thank police for their help.

i'm going to look ahead to the weekend because we have big changes from friday, saturday to sunday. friday could be one of our hottest days. look at those 90s, especially in the east bay and south bay. mid 90s there while we have 70s and 80s around the bay. the 90s are almost gone saturday and sunday even a little bit cooler as temperatures hit the low to mid 60s and the coast into san francisco and low to mid 70s around the bay and just a few 80s inland. so, after five to six days of some really oppressive heat and microclimates, it will get nicer this weekend. reggie?

"the chronicle" is reporting that county health departments has reported more than 6,000 new cases as of last night. the previous record was 4,415. governor newsom warns that the state could revert back to a strict stay-at-home order if there is a dramatic surge in coronavirus. he said california recorded and that's when reopening expanded in many communities. san francisco is planning to speed up its reopening plans. the city is asking the state for permission to let hair salons, nail salons and tattoo parlors welcome back customers on monday. museums and zoos can also reopen with state approval. san francisco also wants to let outdoor bars and outdoor

toddler at yogurtland. watch the right side of the screen. the woman approaches, pulls down her mask and then coughs in the baby's direction. the incident happened friday. police say the woman was upset because she felt the mom wasn't maintaining proper social distancing and that woman, if they find her, could face assault charges. some people who have gotten sick from coronavirus say it's taking them months to recover. there are people who aren't sick enough to go to the hospital, but they're also not well enough to go about their daily lives. they call themselves long haulers and they have connected on facebook for support after many doctors told them they don't know why their symptoms remain. this morning on "gma" dr. jen ashton explains what many doctors suspect is happening. >> the theory has to do with the fact that we think covid-19 causesicture that we're calling an infectious vasculitis. an acute infection and then there's an inflammation stage that occurs in the blood vessels and depending on which blood
