we are still in the middle of the first wave. before you start talking about what a second wave is, what we would like to do is to get this outbreak under control. >> coronavirus cases continue to rise across california and the u.s. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> california has added 5,019 cases just in the last 24 hours. its highest daily increase since the start of the outbreak. abc7 news report he chris reyes is live. i understand the numbers are not spread out evenly across the state. >> that's right, liz. when you map out where the surg clear the problem hot spots are all in southern california. >> as of june 23, california now has 183,000 plus confirmed cases of covid-19. but it is a tale of two states

really. northern california and southern california. here are the rankings. >> here are the rangings. the top five counties all in southern california. l.a., riverside, san diego, orange county, san bernardino. that's 71% of all california's cases. meanwhile the cabrera counties of santa clara,al need, a san francisco, san mateo and could notra costa county only make up 9% of the cases. >> it is hard to say why and some of it is luck but we have to sewell it has more to do with behavioral differences. whether people are out and about more or not wearing masks. >> for example in orange county, the health officer was criticized so badly for not having mandatory masks she ended up quitting. while in the bay area there hasn't been any public outcry. l.a. has more than a combined

population of all the bay area counties bat 7 million. there are some differences when it comes the outdoor recreation culture. so cal beaches have been making headlines for being pakds. in san francisco it was one of the first in the country to page zding circles in their parks. >> what the people of the bay area did, they took it seriously and they're continuing to take it seriously. i believe most people this southern california are doing the same but i see reports of people being less careful than they should. >> what would you say to our colleagues there? >> i would say, people in southern california, let's continue to be ridge is handle. if things are going in the wrong direction, we have to redouble our efforts. to northern california, the minute we say look how good we are, and we start getting a little complacent and smug about it, that is minute we'll get more dangerous. >> so another thing worth noteding, despite the differences in numbers in the bay area, the counties in

southern california, testing is pretty spread out across the state. the doctor said the covid-19 cases are going up faster than the testing in so cal counties. >> we cannot get smug, right? just because we don't have as many cases. but there is another factor about the cases in southern california. >> that's right. the risings numbers of patients in hospitals. in l.a. county, it outnumbers every other county in california with about 1,500 plus. as a point of comparison, alameda has 78 cases in hospitals. santa clara has fewer. we're about to hit a t coro today is the 99th day of the shelter-in-place order in the bay area. santa clara county is seeing its number of virus cases rise. today county reported one of its largest increases in a while during a county board of supervisor's meeting.

the doctor had this warning about the uptick. >> we said before that covid-19 is like a wild first. if you contain it when it's small, you can keep it you understand control. but when it begins on accelerate, it is very, very difficult to contain and to slow down. and i think that's what we're seeing in many parts of the country. >> the doctor noted the county has seen a lot of outbreaks of construction sites ever since work was allowed to resume. she said it is too early to tell what is behind the increase. on the national level, dr. fauci addressed covid-19 at a congressional hearing saying america's responses has been a mixed bag. >> in some respects, we've double very well. the new york metropolitan area which has been hit extraordinarily hard, has done very well in bringing the cases down. however in other areas of the country we're seeing a disturbing surge of infections.

one thing is a community spread. >> all four officials testifying, they told lawmakers, they were never told to slow down on testing. contradicting comments by president trump at his rally in tulsa on saturday. and then again today. dr. fauci reiterated, he's optimistic that a virus vaccine will be available by the end of the year or perhaps early 2021. >> we're getting our first look at what could be the new normal for classrooms in the bay area. sunrise middle school is welcoming students back to campus for the first time since the pandemic. julieian glover hast e chs. >> 97.5. >>o waiting in line six feet apart to get their temperatures checked to start their day at sunrise middle school in san jose. they arrived at staggered times based on grade and everyone including staff is checked. >> somebody take your temperature this morning?

>> reporter: they even checked my temp. after that, one of several sinks where students take turns washing their hands. the first step of the temporary normal for the students enrolled in summer classes. >> i think they're would understandering, is this all really necessary? >> reporter: the director of the charter school said the school is taking all the necessary precautions to keep students safe. no more than 12 studens per classroom, spaced out six feet apart. masks are worn by everyone at all times. how do you get the students to understand social distancing in these hats with pool noodles. if they touch another student, you're too close. students tell me they're okay with that if it means they can get back to school and see their friends again. >> it felt like. >> i felt like i was in a box all alone. >> the lunch room will remain empty. student will wash their hands before and after they eat their box lunches, delivered to their

classrooms. the school has the summer program figured out at this point but fall instruction is still underworks. the principal tells me she's spoken to many parents in the school system. they don't want half days. most work full time and they're concerns about their kids being home for such an extended period of time. the principal says she's trying to accommodate while making sure her students are safe. >> the california agricultural industry is expected to lose up to $8.6 billion this year because of the pandemic. the report by an economic could be subtling firm looked at 15 different sectors using data on projection and price points through early may plus interviews and surveys of businesses. the greatest projected dollar loss impact is to the dairy industry with at least 1.for yol industri saw increased activity, but the losses far outweigh the isolated benefits.

investigation. amy hollyfield has reaction from the track. >> reporter: it is quiet here. all events have been canceled because of the pandemic. the front office is not commenting on what happened but did put out a written statement saying, on saturday, a sonoma raceway staff member discovered a piece of twine tied in what appeared to be a noose hanging from a tree, on raceway property. our staff on site business ten ans and local law enforcement have been contacted and asked to share any information they may have. the incident is under investigation by the sonoma county sheriff's department. sonoma raceway takes this incident very seriously and is dedicated to operateding a facility that is welcoming to everyone. we did get an updata short time ago. a raceway tenant remembered seeing the roam hanging from the tree about seven to eight years ago but it was not tied in a noose at that time. the violent crimes detectives

are looking through footage for leads on a suspect. no charges are pending from the noose in bubba wallace' garage. it had been there since october. that was from video confirmed by nascar. wallace was assigned the garage just last week. wallace is the only black driver at nascar's top level. he successfully pushed the stock car years toys ban the confederate flag at its convenient use earlier this month. fires done significant damage to the woen statue. when firefighters arrived, the goldsworthy spire was in flames. several other spot fires were put out quickly. that spire is made of reclaimed wood. it was built in 2008. the cause of the fire still under investigation. pride celebration. things are a bit different this

livermore. it's pretty sizzling. inland heat starts building up again tomorrow. that writes the increased rigs of fires and heat-related illness. cooling relief will come this weekend. before that happens, we have this. a heat advisory that will end tonight at 8:00. solano county is under a heat advisory until 8:00 p.m. saturday. that probably means we can expect a lot of intense heat. look for fog to expand across the bay locally inland. this will be a lot of fog lierush in again tomorrow evening. overnight, low temperatures will be generally in the upper 50s. even milder as you go inward.
