from coronavirus. santa clara county has the highest number of deaths. alameda yesterday became the first in the bay area to top 5,000 cases. sandal mateo county has the highest rate of cases and deaths when calculated per capita. just the last 24 hours or so, california has added 5,019 new covid-19 cases. the highest daily increase since the start of the outbreak but the numbers are not spread out evenly across the state. that's important to note. check out this graph here. the yellow line on this one is the rate of coronavirus cases per cam at a across the entire state. the blue lines represent individual bay area counties and they are all lower than the state average. who is higher? chris reyes is live to explain. >> good evening. when you ma'am out covid-19 cases across the state, the divide is very obvious. the hot spots are all in southern california.

this is a tale of two states. northern california and southern california. here are the rankings. the top five counties with the highest number covid-19 cases all in southern california. los angeles, riverside, san diego, orange county, san bernardino. that's 71% of all of california's covid-19 cases. meanwhile the bay area counties make up just 11%. so how do you explain the divide? >> it's hard to say why. some of this is luck but i think we have to assume it has mostly to do with behavioral differences. >> in orange county, the public health officer was criticized so badly for enforcing mandatory masks, she ended up quitting. in the bay area there happen been any major outcry against

mandatory masks. >> i don't think we're in any danger. we need to keep a close eye on it. if we have to, shut it down a bit. >> here are a couple major differences. l.a. county's is 10 million. there are some differences, too, when it comes to outdoor recreation culture. so cal beaches with the hotter temperatures made headlines as early as i am a for drawing early crowds. bay area beaches have been crowded, too. some had to shut down though san francisco was praised for installing social distancing circles in public parks. >> the bay area people took it seriously and continue to take it seriously. i believe people in southern california are doing the same but i think people are doing less than they should. >> they said rising numbers could be due to more testing and hospitalization rates are stable. >> what would you say to your peers and colleagues there as we hold our numbers? >> i would say, to people in

southern california, let's continue to be vigilant. if things are going in the wrong direction, we have to redouble our efforts. to northern california, the minute we star thinking, look how good we are, we start getting complacent and smug about it. that's the minute we start getting more dangerous. >> the other metric is the number cases in hospitals. last county has more than 1,500. as a point of comparison, santa clara county has 47. >> really interesting to see these breakdowns. how much did the increase in cases have to do with an increase in testing? >> well, he made it very clear that testing rates don't really tell whole story of the surge. in many counties, he added the number of cases are going up faster than the number of people getting tested. >> thanks. chris reyes reporting. santa clara county is seeing its number of coronavirus cases rise. today the county record one of

the largest increases in a while. during a county board of supervisors meeting, they said this morning about the uptick. >> we've said before that covid-19 is like a wildfire. if you contain it when it's small, you can keep it under control. but when it accelerates, it is very, very difficult to contain and slow down and i think that's what we're seeing in many parts of the country. >> she noted there have been a lot of covid cases at couldn't instruction sites. she said it is too early to tell what's behind the increase. the state requires every person to wear a mask. how do you get people to understand the masking importance to protect themselves and others and to get the economy in opening mode? leslie brinkley looked at the mask dilemma. >> the more we move around in california, the more we are at risk. the california department of public health issued a striking

warning saying, unless we want to see more suffering and go through another round of closures, i think critical to wear a face covering when you leave the house. how do you make people wear masks? and what do you do if they don't? >> i walked into a restaurant in down walnut creek to pick up a takeout order and the employee handing never bag refused to put on a mask saying, it's my choice. at funerals last week in santa cruz, many in attendance did not wear face coverings, even inside a theater packed to capacity. >> we don't expect to police to go out and enforce that and give tickets. what do we do? it's about education. >> reporter: abc7 news checked if with bay area police and found there are no citations being issued for not wearing a mask. oakland, concord, san jose and berkeley all said they have thus far issued zero citations, asking instead for voluntary compliance. in a reopen shopping district in walnut creek, about a quarter of

learned why the state attorney general's office is declining a request from the solano county district attorney to conduct an independent investigation into a reason fatal officer involved shooting. on june 2nd, an officer shot and killed this person. they voted to have the criminal investigation elevated to the attorney general's office. well, yesterday solano county district attorney told abc7 news the attorney general's office had declined the invitation. today ig's office tells i-team that the district attorney did not provide the department of justice with information indicating her office was not capable of conducting a thorough and fair review. rather than the request with the doj pointed to a quote, lack of community trust in the process she oversees. the attorney general has offered the doj personnel could be of stance in aspects of the investigation. the ag's office is undertaking

vallejo police department's policing policies and practices. a funeral was held today for rayshard brooks, the black man shot and killed by atlanta police. the closed service was broadcast from a screen outside the church and online as well. mourners are demanding change to the criminal justice system. >> he lost his life running from a system that too often makes slaves out of people. this is much bigger than the police. this is about a whole system that cries out for renewal and reform. >> brooks was shot after he resisted arrest for dui and took an officer's taser. the officer who shot him is facing a murder charge and ten other counts. another officer is facing criminal charges. meantime, a louisville officer has been officially fired for his role in the shooting death of breonna t

taylor. they said he wantonly and blindly fired ten rounds into her apartment on march 13th while she was sleeping. police were executing a no knock warrant which will now be banned in louisville. the fbi says a noose found hanging in bubba wallace's garage at talledega's super speedway was not a hate crime. the noose was there since last october. wallace is the only black driver at nascar's top level and was assigned to the garage just last week. nascar is continuing its own investigation into how and why a rope in the garage was made into a noos sonoma valley is investigating a noose found. it was found hanging are a tree. they remember seeing the rope happeninging from the tree years ago but said twaum tied into a noose. detectives are looking for surveillance footage for leads on a suspect. a climbing coach is going viral after she recorded a video explaining how of two her young

black students were called the "n" word by a white woman. luz pena spoke to the coach. >> at ten years old, there's so much pain. >> reporter: this is the moment emily taylor broke down and reflected on what two of her students experienced at indian rock park in berkeley. they came running to taylor in shock after a white woman allegedly called them "n" word. >> four little girls impacted at summer camp by this one woman who comes by and calls them a [ bleep ]. >> taylor, the founder of brown girls climbing, recorded this video last week. a day after the incident. ever since then, it has been viewed more than 12,000 times. today we caught up with her. >> that's also with systemic racism does to black people. it numbs us. >> i was horrified. >> brerk berkeley's mayor said it is under acceptable.

hayward and 31 miles per hour. looking at the 24-hour temperature change, you can see it is two to six degrees cooler than many locations this time yesterday. so let's look at some specific temperature changes. oakland, 66, 80 in gilroy, and a cool 59 at half moon bay. on we go to some other locations. 73 at santa rosa, petaluma, 75, 71 in napa and mid 80s in fairfield, can you please cord and livermore. you can see, it is pretty warm inland and slow to cool down. these are our forecast features. it will be heating up inland. increased risk. fires and heat-related illness. and there will be cooling relief over the weekend. we still have a heat advisory until 10:00 at night for lake and

there will be a prolonged period of intense heat. you can see the fog expanding from the coastline across the bay. there will be lots of it hanging around. it will burp back quickly to the coastline. giving us another soinl day over the bay and inland. another partly foggy day at the coastline. overnight lows in the upper 50s. expect a relatively mild temperature. low 60s at the coast to maybe a couple low 80s at the shoreline. mabel mid 90s inland. farther north, upper 90s in cloverdale and ukiah. as we look at the forecast, you can see that after four days of very warm conditions inland, thursday and friday will be the warmest days. we'll see a slight cool down on saturday but a more significant cooldown will occur sunday and monday with windy conditions on sunday. winds a little lighter on

doing the 4:00 news on the other side of the studio. when i come in, i sit here. and we're separated. i have hand sanitizer back there and anti-bacterial wipes. she has the same here so that's it. sports, larry is doing it from home as well. if you look here behind the set, you can see we have a station. which we have hand sanitizer, rubber gloves, and wipes. this is where the producer would sit. this is plexiglass was not here. it was put here to separate employees and better protect them. here's another bit plexiglass. kurt, our wonderful director, is on the other side. we've had to change how we operate. peopl this particular room. we had a producer, a back-up

village. many pride celebrations are online as well. the city will not hold a pride parade this year. this marks the 50th anniversary of san francisco's pride parade. however, something new will happen this year. 2,700 pink l.e.d. lights will form a giant triangle. >> my hope is that this acre of pink light will be from the east bay, a twinkling light of equality. >> it's important to have something live for pride. so much has gone virtual. this will be one of the few live events. >> it will replace the pink sail cloth that has been a fixture on twin peak for 25 years. the pink led lights are the same as the ones on the bay bridge. one of the biggest draws, the nonprofit is taking a real

economic hit. since the pandemic forced the cancellation of the parade. plans to expand the museum are now on hold. >> the pride flags may be out in san francisco's castro district but the doors are locked at the historical society and archive. the nation's first stand-alone muse he'll of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender history and culture. but the plans to expand into a larger space have been put on hold because of the economic impacts of the coronavirus. at just under 1,600 square feet, the museum is small. the current exhibit tells the 150-year history of lgbt san francisco. items ranging from gold rush photos to the jacket harvey milk was wearing when he was killed. just 1% of the museum's courage holdings are on display. this year would have marked the anniversary of the san

francisco pride parade. it was expected to bring in as many as a million people to san francisco. n have thousands of people coming through this small museum during the month of june and throughout the summer. >> the crowds would have been greeted with news. a larger location at market and castro streets. a space nearly seven times larger than the museum. >> when covid hit, we were in the midst of negotiating a lease for a much larger museum space right here in the castro. >> the plans to expand are now on hold. >> the public funding fell through. clearly, we're in a recession right now and we weren't in a position to launch a capital campaign. >> reporter: they are now re-evaluating the future. disappointed that plans are on hold did you telling the stories of people. the museum is still open with

that will expire for headache county and mendocino county. overnight, look for an increase in low clouds and fog from the coast across the bay and locally inland. overnight lows in the 50s. it will be a rather mild overnight period. upper 90s in the far north at clover dale. only in the low 60s tomorrow. and mild to warm around the bay shoreline. still warmer in hot spots but not quite as warm as tomorrow. on friday, the heat holds on in all those locations. after four days of rather hot weather, look for a cooldown all across the board on sunday and monday.
