up at night, they are disturbing the animals in local zoos. >> building a better bay area, for a safe and secure future. this is abc-7 news. developing news. the confirmed cases of coronavirus are exploding in san quinton prison. on june 14th there were 48 cases, by this past friday, the number was up to 499. >> and right now, there are 523 active cases among inmates. at least 73 employees at the prison have tested positive. abc news reporter j.r. stone talked with multiple inmates, some who have tested positive. >> i want to start by saying for safety purposes we are not revealing the names of the inmates that i talked with. they have been convicted of serious crimes, yes, but are now involved with their own heah ba. vid-19 cas on the rise at san quinton state

prison. they are soaring according to inmates that i spoke with. and in an interview thursday, they said only five cases and then it went to 15 and then to 25, and now, we are at over 500. there have not been any confirmed covid-19 deaths in san quinton state prison. but richard stitley has died. he covid-19 symptoms but a cause of death is not released. what is most alarming to the prisoners believe that the rise in cases could be prevented. it boggles my mind that they would take prisoners from the most infected prison and bring them here. guards are being rotated from infected areas to uninfected areas daily. there's a surge of cases on death row. an prison ve times. each time they are being

transferred to the medical area. i wear masks in the cell, wash my hands and still somehow, my tests came back positive. i never felt any symptoms. there's been mixed reaction to news of the san quinton outbreak. critsina bell saying i feel bad for the guards. i hope the prisoners experience the same hell inflicted on others. they acknowledged the opinions, saysing they know they are not here to be -- they are not here to be tortured on a daily basis. >> for safety reasons i'm not identifying the inmates that i spoke with. these are people with family members here in the bay area and family members who are very concerned about them. they are hoping for additional help. j.r. stone, abc7 news. >> all right, j.r. thank you. the data from the prison is

chris funk said there's not been enough activity to warrant having officers in the schools. last year, there were 31 citations and dozens of people, including students joined the virtual meeting to talk about why they wanted the officers removed. >> in my 12 years, a cop has never positively impacted or empowered me to be the individual that i am today. as a community member, i ask that you commit to removing the police, not only in the coming school year, but truly forever. >> those strong feelings were echoed at the union school district board. to cut ties with the police. 140 people petitioned the board to eliminate officers? schools, a board member added an item to keep police off campus even if they are trying to interview a student as part of an active criminal investigation. >> there's more developments for push for police reform. democrats have passed a ban on

closed for the past 100 numbers. and the folks that work here at the zoo are concerned about the barrage of fireworks disturbing the animals and the community around the bay area thave benoe e lrn that th wil life and the pets are not reacting so well. >> last night, it caught my attention. >> reporter: the oakland zoo said the explosion of fireworks has been scaring their animals and sending n ining them in to . >> it's a response where they kind of take off across the exhibit. the baboons, we call a fear bark, and you know, they are making that, you know, fearful vocalization. it's an alarm call. >> reporter: the zoo animals

were sensitive to the noise. and this faint boom in the distance forced them to fly away. some of the noiseoineambient noise in the background so that that, you know, loudness doesn't come out of complete silence. that's what people can do at home too. >> reporter: they say there's a silver lining to this unusually long fireworks season. >> the fact that there's been so much leading up toyot-- up to i will probably not have as much much of a reaction as we do on the fourth of july. more businesses and that includes san francisco's zoo. mayor brooed announced the popular attraction will reopen monday. there will be changes of course, including buying tickets online for a specific time period, practicing social distancing and

wearing a fight covering. and it's not just the zoo. hair salons, nail salons and tattoo parlors will welcome back customers on monday. museums and outdoor swim meet pools will reopen with planning. and they could allow for indoor dining and real estate open houses. >> santa cruz county is set to reopen beaches as coronavirus are set to be rising. the county health office is now admitting it's clear that people don't want to be governored about it anymore. she added police are having a hard time enforcing restrictions. at midnight. 32 miles of beach-s will reopen to the public. that includes state, county and city shorelines, visitors have mixed reactions. >> i think my kid will be excited. we made a trip out here for a surf camp that happened at the last minute. >> i'm happy in one sense, because i like to surf and my son would like to use it.
