the people inside were not wearing masks. a new study is out this morning on the kind of face coverings that are most effective in stopping coronavirus. also this morning, a new strain of swine flu has been found in china. earlier i spoke with dr. ryan ribeiro about each of these headlines but we started with the new warning about coronavirus. i want to start with the big headline today. dr. anthony fauci warning we could see 100,000 new covid-19 cases per day. that is a significantly high number. is our health care system ready for that? >> i think we may very well already be at 100,000 cases a day because we're confirming 40,000 to 50,000 a day. there's a couple of things to remember here. one, there is a lag time to reported cases so you should look at that curve, look at where it's going to be three to four days from now, and that's probably where we are right now. we'll have to watch closely in the next week if we see a big increase in hospitalizations then we know the health care system will be struggling. >> a new harvard study says
4:19 am
we're only testing 500,000 people per day nationwide and researchers say we need about a million tests per day and found only 17 states are doing enough testing. how much of a problem is the testing process right now? >> this really is a huge problem and really in particular a robust testing system is necessary for us to really take the next step here, which is contact tracing and isolation because if you're really not able to identify a significant proportion of the sick patients, then none of that system is going to work. we really might not be able to turn the corner into the next phase of this until we can get on top of that. >> there's some important information about the kind of face masks that are most effective in stopping droplets that carry the virus. let's look at the results of a new experiment. researchers found without a mask droplets can travel eight feet, droplets can travel three feet through a bandanna, 15 inches through a handkerchief and you see a stitched mask is clearly most effective. does any of this change your views about social distancing or safety? >> i'll say the big takeaway for me was there are a lot of masks that can work really well. without a mask sometimes
4:20 am
these droplets are traveling eight feet. sometimes they're traveling 12 feet, and so for me i think what that says is that staying six feet away from someone is not enough. masks are critical. >> finally, staying on that topic, the new strain of swine flu that's been found in china. officials now warning there is a potential for another pandemic. what are you hearing and should we be worried? >> at this stage i think what dr. fauci said is appropriate. he said, this is something that we need to keep our eye on. you know, has concerning features for sure but definitely not another coronavirus yet. in fact, i don't believe it's really infected another person as far as we're aware. we should all be well aware that something that is china's problem now could become our problem in the not so distant future. >> our thanks to dr. ribeiro. a new york judge has temporarily blocked publication of a tell all book by president trump's niece. they claim it violates a n nondisclosure agreement. the judge will consider a long-term ruling. another streaming service
