that trump campaign senior adviser and top fund-raising official, kimberly guilfoyle, tested positive for covid-19. and this comes as three-fourths of the country is seeing a rise in coronavirus cases. for more on that, we turn now to trevor ault in new york. trevor, good morning. >> reporter: well, whit, good morning. you know, we're starting to see a lot more families file in here at rockaway beach, but this is anything but a typical fourth of july. the vast majority of parades and fireworks shows today are canceled across the country, and as huge sections of the u.s. are seeing a resurgence to the virus health officials are really worried that these holiday parties or gatherings can lead to more cases and possibly more deaths. this morning as america battles an intensifying pandemic, americans are celebrating the fourth of july like never before. holiday travelers now hitting the road, many joining these long lines of cars heading to packed beaches as covid-19 cases rise in three-fourths of the united states with half the country seeing increasing hospitalizations and 13 states

reporting rising deaths. many beachgoers around the country like the 100,000 converging on myrtle beach this weekend now required to wear masks, but in florida amid surging cases, closures have left usually packed beaches eerily empty with some cities enforcing curfews. in texas, masks are now required after governor greg abbott initially resisted a statewide mandate. hospitals in the rio grande valley in south texas overwhelmed with patients now diverting them to other hospitals. and massive parties like this one friday at missouri's lake of the ozarks have health officials gravely concerned. in georgia, two ymca camps north of atlanta shut down. multiple staff and children now testing positive. in california, icu admissions have already climbed nearly 50% in recent weeks, and as america celebrates its birthday, we're also thinking about america's pastime, baseball. in the first round of major

league baseball testing its players, we have learned 31 players tested positive. many are now saying that they're uncomfortable with the possibility of returning to play and the league has now canceled its all-star game for the first time since world war ii. eva. >> all right, trevor ault, thank you. tonight, president trump will speak at the "salute to america" being held in washington after last night's speech at mt. rushmore. for more we turn to rachel scott. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: hey, eva, good morning. yes, fireworks and flyovers here on the national mall. 300,000 face coverings will be on hand, but wearing it will be optional, and as health experts caution against those big crowds, president trump held his third large-scale event in the last two weeks at mt. rushmore. thousands packing in there. no social distancing. many seen without a face mask and the president railed against those protests that have brought some controversial statues and monuments toppling down. >> our nation is witnessing a merciless campaign to wipe out

up something hot for dan harris. thank you so much. >> watching janai stroll on to set one morning eating cheetos and dancing. >> yeah. she does love her snacks. >> and cheetos. >> and her men apparently, mostly her husband. all right, janai, talk to you soon. now to our "gma" cover story. we're going to shift gears here a little bit. parents nationwide are facing a huge challenge, how to juggle working and parenting as workplaces re-open but camps and schools don't. let's go to abc's stephanie ramos with more on that and, stephanie, you know i know that struggle is real. >> the struggle is real. we have been through it. we are still in it. during covid, whit, it was challenging for many families who were trying to manage work and the kids while they were out of school for months. for my family we still don't know what school in the fall will look like. this mom, debra perelman, she writes about these uncertainties and she says at first she was hesitant to write about their struggle since her family didn't have it particularly hard, but

she knew other families had to be going through the same challenges. she's the food blogger and cookbook author behind the delicious dishes on "smitten kitchen" but beyond crafting recipes, deb perelman and her recently laid off husband alex have also been dealing with the challenge so many parents are facing right now, how to be a good parent and homeschool teacher for their kids, 10-year-old jacob and almost 5-year-old anna, while meeting expectations at work. >> we have it good in many ways, however, it's still been a real challenge. >> reporter: in a "new york times" article titled "in the covid-19 economy you can have a kid or a job, you can't have both," perelman writes, it should be obvious but a nonnegotiable precondition of getting back to normal is that families need a normal to return to as well. >> we're not burnt out. there's policies that are crushing us and the wheels of the economy are crushing us as schools are closed, camps are closed. there is nothing safe to do with children, and yet we're supposed

to be re-opening the economy and going back to work. >> reporter: and with no clear path to re-opening schools at full capacity this fall, she says the long-term effects for working parents will be immense. last year 72% of all mothers with children under the age of 18 were working or looking for work, and perelman says there's no telling how many women will have no choice but to give up their careers to take care of their children full time. >> child care has always been a struggle. it's never been easy for working parents to figure out what to do with their kids all day. >> reporter: for now families have found unique ways to adapt to the covid economy like inviting relatives to move in to help take care of the kids, nanny sharing or creating family bubbles where groups of parents trade off taking care of multiple kids together while the others work. >> everyone has to be on the same page, like how often will they go out? how much interaction will they have with the outside world? where has the sitter been hanging out when she's not at

wrap it around. go really quick. and then you take your flatiron, have it heated up and just tap, tap, tap a couple times and let go, and, look, there you have it. isn't that cool? this works so well. we were both so shocked at how well this works. it's really fast. it works easily but the one caveat, if you have a lot of hair like harlow does here, she has like rapunzel hair, it will take some time. so definite thumbs up on this one for me. >> the longer the hair the longer it will take you probably. >> yes. >> so the next one you have for us is for the lips. >> yes, so it was all about ulta lip oil on tiktok. it's been all over and i have to tell you, i was hesitant about this one because i'm a gloss girl through and through but i tried this and i loved it. so if you can see from our pictures here, i really love this. it was moisturizing, it was hydrating, it really lasted long. i drank, i ate and it really

stood the test of time. i love this and it's better than a gloss i think because it's not sticky, and it's different from a balm because a balm has wax that seals in the moisture. so if you want that extra moisture lock, my pro tip would be to exfoliate your lips first, put on your oil then put on the balm to moisturize and let everything marinate and soak in so this is another thumb's up for me. again, you don't have to use the ulta. any lip oil will do. i prefer a nontinted one. >> our makeup artist camille has me using the tinted lip oils because they're stupid-proof. you can't screw them up and get them all over your face. finally you have -- >> they are so good. >> yeah. finally, you have a makeup tip for us. >> okay, so the reverse makeup trend, so this has been around for awhile, but it's gaining traction on tiktok these days and essentially what it is is taking your makeup routine and just flipping it around to the reverse. so you start with the moisturizer generally anyway but then instead of putting on your primer first, you're essentially

putting it on last and it's flipped around. you'll see how the normal makeup routine is. you are put your primer, translucent powder, setting spray the normal way but they're flipping it around. so i tested this out. i put the translucent powder on before my primer. it didn't work well for me because when i put the primer on top of the translucent powder, it got really pasty, and it created this whole situation that didn't have a great base to put my foundation on. i didn't feel like my foundation stayed on well. i felt like there were lines, there were wrinkles. it was not good for me, so this is the thumb's down for me. i'm going to stick to my basic makeup routine. >> this doesn't make any sense to me either. why would you put powder on and then put liquid on top of it? that just seems like a disaster to me, but i guess it's working for some people. >> yes, i totally agree with you. did not work for me at all. >> all right, well, thanks, melissa. we appreciate it. dan, back to you. >> i have told you, eva, a

happy fourth, everybody. happy fourth of july, lots of sunshine here from downtown san francisco. we will see temperatures slightly warmer this afternoon in the city. about 70 with our typical sea breeze. low 90s inland with lower 80s all right, now to pandemic party planning. if you're organizing a summer get-together, "good housekeeping's" lori bergamotto is here with smart ways to be the host with the most while keeping yourself and your guests safe, of course. lori, good morning to you. i'm playing the role of party guest with the folding chair. but, of course, we're keeping social distancing in mind. the rules are different this year, six feet apart, masks. considering all of that, how should we be planning our parties this year? >> well, happy fourth of july, whit. you look very comfortable even in your suit. what i would say is keep it

small, and make sure you're inviting people over the phone. now, since it is a small group of people, this shouldn't take too long, but clear communication is safe communication, and following cdc guidelines, you want to be sure you're communicating that to whatever small amount of guests that you're inviting over. let them know what the layout is going to look like, that you expect social distancing. let them, you know, know all of the rules because we do want everybody to party safely. another thing to keep in mind is that masks and hand sanitizers make really practical party favors. i see that dan is manning a little bucket, if you will, of hand sanitizers and masks and really thoughtful things that you want to be able to give out to your guests. dan, i may sneak in a copy of "ten percent happier" for my guests, but these are things you want to encourage that your guests are bringing. by, you know, laying them out there for them, there's no

mistake. everybody will be safe. do you agree? >> definitely agree. >> absolutely. yes. >> and no party would be complete without food, but you say this year, ditch the buffet. >> yes, you want to rethink the potluck, eva. i understand that you're up against a beautiful table of some single serve cupcakes and a fruit salad. you want to remember that instead of byob, right now in the summer of 2020, everything is byoe, bring your own everything. so encourage guests to bring a plate of their own so that they can feast on their own food. but if you are going to host, you want to keep things really simple and single. so you can see here i have some of my go-to favorites, caprese skewers, steak bites, these are things that somebody can just take, eat, finger foods, throw away. you don't want serving spoons shared. you don't want any double dipping.
