>> and i'm jr stone. eric thomas has the night off. happy fourth of july to ya. the fourth, here, in the bay area, is looking much different this year due to covid-19. most parade and firework shows have been cancelled. but, for many, the independence day spirit is still bright. just, a little subdued. abc 7 news reporter cornell co barnard. cornell, i notice your jacket is now on. >> yeah. it's just a little bit chillier than it was at 5:00. happy fourth to you, as well, jr. the weather has been beautiful today, here, at ocean beach. but, as you can see behind me, parking lots are closed. city officials are hoping folks just stay home. but a lot of people did come out, as you can see. but there is a lot of social distancing happening today. but, far from the crowds we've seen on past holidays. to hg a good fourth of july this year. >> perry freedman and her two

sons are lugging gear to the beach at chrissy field because parking lots are closed. by the looks of it, many people stayed away. ach, no matter what, today. e p, >> with covid infections on the rise, san francisco officials have urged folks to stay home this holiday. the parking lots at ocean beach are off limits. the beach is open, but not as crowded as a traditional fourth of july. >> this year, we asked everyone to stay home. >> pacifica closed all the beaches in her town. >> large groups of people, as we know, is one of the top causes of the spread of the virus. so we want to make sure our prabop o o s kept safe. acul fourth.kserut dt.

most have been cancelled. no patriotic parades, either. normally, where you can find a big parade on the fourth, today, the streets are silent. barely, a hint of red, white, and blue. >> today is a little gloomy. it's not the same. you don't see acotions out. >> ginger trask says her chocolate store might have been selling ice cream and drinks to parade goers. >> it's less fun m customers. also, for the owners of the store, it's worse because they don't make as much money. >> for others, celebrations may be hard to find but the spirit of the fourth is still bright. >> we're still patriots, right, leo? we still love the united states of america? yeah. >> and the message from san francisco officials this we stay safe and stay home. i got to tell you. we have been checking the horizon all day long. wouldn't you know it, no fog,

anywhere. tonight might have been the perfect night for a fireworks y 7 news. >> many thanks to you both. well, gillroy is the only bay area city that has a firework show tonight. but comes with a modification. so to be in compliance, the mayor is asking people to stay home and watch from their yards. fireworks will go higher into the sky this year. and anyone within 2 1/2 miles should be able to see it. the show launches at dusk from a field at gillroy high school. roads around the school and nearby parks will be blocked off to prevent crowds. >> foster city went virtual this year for its fourth of july celebration. it's been a day of online games and performances. streaming live through foster city's facebook page. families played bingo this morning, and trivia this

afternoon. children singer and songwriter andy z hosted a concert. vocalist tony lindsey will perform tonight. the celebration will wrap up with video of a fireworks show that was previously recorded. foster city's lions club helped put on the event. danville went virtual this fourth, as well. bringing the town's annual parade to people online. it included marching band performances from years past. but there were new, live elements, too. like a flyover from danville's memorial squadron to honor our military. the live stream included shoutouts from the police chief, firefighters, and community members. kiwanis club hosted today's event. now, if you have plans for the fourth of july weekend, we've put together a guide on what's allowed and what's not. you can find it at abc 7 news.com. share it with yourthat c all le. for at least three fires

overnight in contra costa county. fire crews say they battled 14 fires, since last night alone. and in concord, firefighters say there were four early-morning fires in the span of just 30 minutes, includeing the one you see here. most were grass fires, including one in richmond. three involved buildings while two others involved vehicles. that is according to an official with the east bay regional park district. that fire started about 3:00 this afternoon. no one was hurt. to the south bay now where a restaurant in morgan hill that's been serving customers outside for a month now, is ordered to stop by the state. and that order could affect every restaurant in santa clara county. >> i really have no idea why the state is doing this. >> these dramatic surveillance pictures provided by the owner of ladera grill show members of

alcohol beverage control abruptly shutting the restaurant down friday night. >> when we were visited by these two armed officers, everybody was very worried. wondering what was going on. >> the closure caused confusion and outrage at the restaurant, which had been open for outdoor dining since june 5th. the city police chief saying abc told him the county did n he apoval froni odoors. moanng a a news briefing saturday, vowing to find a solution. >> we wan to do the right thing. we think we are doing the right thing. and if we're not doing the right thing, somebody needs to tell us what we're doing wrong. >> while no citations were issued, abc informed us they visited numerous establishments, and explained that santa clara county had not received variance to open and was technically in vielg violation of california's stayat-home orders. >> i was up till 2, 3:00 in the morning. i see nothing that would be

directive that we could no longer have outside h they odol eltein-pce oeran. say they'll continue, until otherwise stated by governor newsom. >> i find this reprehensible. and i am not going to comply unless i get a clear directive. now, we did reach out to santa clara county about not having a variance from the state for outdoor dining. we are still waiting to hear back. a woman seen on surveillance video appearing to intentionally cough on a 1-year-old child at a san jose yogurt land has been fired. the oak grove school district confirmed today to abc 7 news, the woman is no longer an employee. she was seen, on video, walking over to the baby's stroller, pulling down her mask, and then coughing. police say it appeared to be some sort of dispute over social distancing. at last check, the woman had not been arrested. the faa is investigating, after

died in the coronavirus outbreak at san quentin prison. dewayne carey died from what the department of corrections says is complications, likely from covid-19. he was sentenced to death in 1996 for a murder in los angeles

county. he is the third death row inmate to die, in just two days. at least five have died in the outbreak that has seen nearly 1,400 prisoners get infected. pandemic is creating a toned-down fourth of july this year. most fireworks displayed are cancelled. and some states, like california, are closing beaches. professional sports are, also, being affected by the virus. here is abc news reporter trevor alt. >> this year's fourth of july celebrations are looking a lot different, amid the coronavirus pandemic. nearly 80% of fireworks displays have been cancelled. but some local leaders are defiant. >> this is america and it is our birthday. and it is the worst year that we have ever experienced. the only thing that will stop it is handcuffs. >> in lieu of fireworks, some cities along the east coast were treated to a military flyover. planes from the air force and marine corps flew from boston, to new york, and on to philadelphia. beaches closed in virus hotspots, like texas, florida, and california. >> i don't think the beach

some bay-area families are getting a helping hand as the coronavirus pandemic continues. the city of freemont partnered with the six for humanity to put on a donation drive today. 500 families in the tri-city area received supplies. that includes fremont, newark, and union city. they got things like face ma, hander,ocieme. a dre-thru, soecipies uld liritest is being held at oakland's lake merit right now. folks were asked to dress all in black to show their solidarity with black lives matter. organizers, also, prepped 2,000 meals to serve, for free. asking only for donations in return. protest was supposed to end at 6:00 tonight.

multiple protests were held across the bay area today. over in the south bay, artists are using their talents to help san jose stand in solidarity with the black lives matter movement. they painted the words, black lives matter, on the road near the park. this is at 15th and empire street in north san jose. the group called today an angel-versery in honor ofz o ll. protestors are calling foro redl all right. shifng gears now. tossing over to drew. and i have to say you look very festive. look. you have short sleeves on. enjoying the holiday and all the weather that comes with it. >> you really have to dress nice today because it's warm weather out there. shorts and short sleeve, certainly, on the agenda. and we are going to keep this warm pattern for another day. tomorrow, it's equally as warm. live doppler 7 along with satellite. we have high pressure in

remainshext 2 hrs the reason why. in the desert southwest right now, we have high pressure. with that clockwise flow, it is pumping in, not only warmer weather but, also, dryer weather. and that high pressure will be the muscle maker of our forecast tomorrow as well. so tonight, we will have plenty of stars out there. it's a nice night. numbers are really going to be slow to cool off. without the marine layer to help influence us with that cooler air, numbers will gradually fall into the 50s. 53 overnight in san francisco. 55 in oakland. 56 for san jose. 51 in santa rosa. 58, that overnight low for concord. so, without that fog first thing tomorrow morning, it is sunshine, from start to finish, on the 12-hour day planner. sun's up here at 5:53 in the morning. starting in the 50s. but will quickly warm. it is a bright day, again, and temperatures very similar to where we were today. so close look at highs on our sunday. it is a warm one, again, going back into the 90s.
