i'm j.r. stone. eric thomas has the night off. >> and i'm deon. firefighters have been racing to keep up with the fires mostly started because of illegal fireworks. more on this story and you can even see the remnants of last night, cornell. >> reporter: for sure. firefighters on the run this weekend, chasing fires blamed on illegal fireworks. check it out. this is san pablo where this hill caught fire briefly last night. and just feet away, remnants from fireworks. fireworks lit tim skies over san francisco on july 4th. but it's a show firefighters didn't want to see. illegal fireworks caused large grass fires like this one. and this fire less than a mile

away. >> we were virtually working nonstop. from one fire to another fire to another fire. >> he says his department responded to 108 fires, all started by fireworks. at one point, fire crews came under attack from a barrage of fireworks. >> reporter: two small kids were injured after they got too close to fireworks. in oakland, neighbors were helping clean up lakeshore avenue where lots of debris from fireworks was left behind. after a big loud show in the sky. >> it was the best fireworks show of my life. and i wanted to come out here and help clean up. >> reporter: but others thought would it never end. >> seven hours. >> reporter: in contra costa

county, crews responded to fires most started by fire works. at one point two dozen homes were threatened. firefighters say not a single one was lost. >> significant amount of illegal fireworks activity. almost to the point where the noise was continuous. each one of those is a potential ignition. >> reporter: yeah. with conditions so dry, firefighters urged people not to use fireworks. despite that, we have heard booms from fireworks all day long. firefighters expected to be busy once again tonight. abc7 news. >> all right. much appreciated. thanks. home owners in san jose say illegal fireworks caused damage to their home and set a nearby palm tree on fire. the firemen said fireworks are to be blamed for a total of 23 fires including two building fires. you're looking at time lapse video of the illegal fireworks. the city received nearly 6,300

complaints and issued five citations. >> reporter: investigators are working today to determine if fireworks sparked a wildfire that is burning in the south bay. it is in effect for areas including morgan hill, san martin and gilroy. that's due to the so-called park fire burning in the anderson lake area. 80 people living near the fire were evacuated from their homes. many of them now at live oak high school. fires now 50% contained. the fire crews say they are keeping close track on the winds. >> the northwest winds, we do have concerns that it may head to the south. we're trying to get around that this morning with some of our bulldozers and our hand crews to hopefully box that in. >> the fire started around 11:00 last night and has now burned 343 acres. right now, firefighters are battling a fire burning northeast of gilroy. that has rapidly exploded in

size. this is new video. look at the flames racing up the foot hills. fire has burned at least 600 acres. according to cal fire. mandatory evacuations are in place in the area of cruise road near oak spring circle. water dropping helicopters and planes with fire retardant have been called in to help with this firefight. cal fire says two structures are burned and others are threatened. the fire started around 2:30 this afternoon. we want to get a quick trek with meteorologist drew about those weather think the. >> it is dry and windy out there. it is growing. live doppler 7 will show you that the smoke plume is get go picked up by radar. that's smoke coming off the cruise fire right now. it is moving away from much of the bay area. we do have an air quality

advisory for parts of the south bay. that would include gilroy and morgan hill today and tomorrow, for smoke from nearby fires. it is impacting air quality. we have to remember that the current drought monday or the does have much of the bay area under severe drought conditions. vegetation is very dry and it will remain that way for the next three or four months. we're tracking cooler weather and we'll have that in the forecast. >> all right. we'll see you in a bi. thanks. illegal fireworks weren't just a bay area problem. the sacramento fire department was busy. this is one of the fires they've responded to. you can see and certainly hear the fireworks going off in the distance. firefighters stopped a small grass fire. the department responded to dozens of fires including ones in a least 12 buildings. and a similar story in los angeles last night where illegal fireworks lit up the sky. on a typical day, dispaxers say

they can handle about 1,000 calls. last night it was nearly double that amount. the last county fire department said it responded to multiple tree, brush and roof fires. marin county is putting the brakes on indoor restaurant dining because of the worsening covid numbers. it goes into effect at 11:59 tonight. outdoor seating, takeout service will not change. marin county gave the green light to indoor dining on june 29 but several days later, it found itself on the state's watch list for an infection hot spots. part of. has 22nd the outbreak at san quentin. school will look different when students return to the class in palo alto. the district's plan was officially approved on friday by the palo alto board of education. elementary school students will be taught in person primary, while middle schools and high schools will be taught at home.

there will be activities for small groups on campus. the school start times could be changing at a later date. parents and students at slept will be asked if they want their children to learn remotely or in person. parking prices will go up and time limits will be end forced wublgs again, starting tomorrow. they lowered rates to 50 cents an hour and eliminated time limits when the shelter-in-place orders went into effect. meters will be priced at 50 cents below the previous rates. warnings and then with actual citations later this month. the mta expects the changes to free up more metered space in commercial areas. fourth of july celebrations have some health officials concerned as the number of coronavirus cases continues to rise in dozens of states. hospitalizations are also going up with some nearing capacity. here's aibls news reporter alex.

welcome back. a 6-year-old boy was shot and killed in san francisco last night. san francisco police said they responded to a shooting on engles street just before 11:00 p.m. that's when they found the victim. a second person was also shot but is expected to recover. no arrests have been made. >> the army has identified the remains of missing ft. hood soldiers vanessa guillen, according to the attorney. the army investigation has yet to confirm the i.d. she was a ft. hood army specialist missing since april. her family said she disappeared after she said she was being sexually harassed by a superior but didn't report it out of fear of retaliation. a group of protesters demanding justice for her caravanned from concord to san francisco today. you can see there at least 100

the press democrat reports that the city has formed a commission to consider the issue. the meant scene over coast town is named after a confederate general and slave owner from 1857. the ft. was established to subdue the tribes. members of the committee are deciding whether it should rename the community. there he goes. an eruption of cheers as protesters in baltimore yesterday pulled down a christopher columbus statue in the city's little italy neighborhood. you can see there, it broke to pieces which protesters dumped into the inner harbor. the statue was dedicated to the city of baltimore in october of 1984. this demonstration comes during a nationwide call to remove confederate monuments and statues of other controversial historical figures. the 23rd international aids conference begins tomorrow in the bay area.
