my name is anthony anderson. this is my second night in a row guest hosting the show. i actually do a lot here on abc. i'm on "black-ish," "to tell the truth," and for the past 11 years, i've been playing the role of george stephanopolis on "good morning america." i have to be honest, i'm feeling a little sentimental tonight. we looked it up, and this is my 41st appearance on this show. it was sweet, the staff gave me a cake today with candles and everything. but then i blew on it and we had to throw it away. y'all could have let me eat the damn cake myself. this is the worst summer in recorded history and continues to roll on. i remember the old days when having a bad summer just meant you sat in poison ivy. in 2020, itchy ass is your best case scenario. remember that movie, "i know what you did last summer?" they should make one about this

summer. only this time, the killer is the one not wearing a mask. and he doesn't use a hook, he kills people by sneezing at costco. i really don't get why people still won't wear masks. i guess not everyone takes the threat seriously. but here's what you need to know about the coronavirus. it's tiny and it's everywhere. it's the kevin hart of diseases. for the past few months, i've actually been working on a big primetime television special about the pandemic. it's finally premiering this weekend, and i'm excited to debut the very first promo for it tonight. take a look. >> a country in lockdown. a global pandemic surges. and one man will put it on the line. to -- get -- his -- mail!

please welcome the great d.l. hughley. >> what's up, man? you look so dope right now. i want to buy insurance and a financial plan. >> anthony: okay, for those who may not know or have known about it, you are a survivor of covid. >> right. i got, i had the covids, baby, i had it. >> anthony: as my mama calls it, the cobra, she's like, don't touch him. he's had the cobra. can we talk about your symptoms of covid? we all saw the footage of you passing out on stage during one of your sets. >> right. >> anthony: can we talk about that instance and how you were made aware that you had contracted the disease? >> i'd only, you know, i'd been dehydrated, i knew that i was burning the candle at both ends,

and i knew i was running a little low, so i wasn't really shocked when i passed out. i was shocked when i got to the hospital, and if you go to the hospital for anything nowadays, you are going to get a covid test. they told me i'm dehydrated. they told me my electrolytes are low, oh, and you got covid. i'm like, what? i didn't have any of the classic symptoms. the cough, the fever, the shortness of breath. what i had was passin' the hell out. that's what i had. >> anthony: well, we're glad that you were able to overcome that. and for those of you who might want to know what d.l.'s nickname is amongst his good friends, his nickname is called "outbreak." >> that is better than contagion. >> anthony: so let's talk about your book, "surrender white people." what does the title imply? what does the title mean?

why did you entitle your book that? >> obviously, it's a provocative title. it means surrendering your privilege, surrendering the notion that because all us believe we're entitled to things, but when you have privilege just abound, we have a nation that was built on the premise that some people should have this and some people should have less based on the fact that we're supreme, superior. we're in the process of becoming a majority minority country. my solution is to kind of write a peace treaty while the getting's still good. we're getting blacker, browner, higher. so i decided to take the comedic vantage point and write a peace treaty. with a peace treaty, they get to feel not horrible and we get some things we want.

>> anthony: now your book may have come out a week too early. because had you waited another week, you could have had a whole chapter devoted to bubba wallace. what's your whole take on what's going on with our next guest tonight? bubba? >> well, it's interesting, because you expect, i expected basketball and football to come along with the black lives matter matter, because without black people, the nfl would be rugby. so, but, but when nascar did it, and i saw bubba wallace riding around black lives matter, of course i know he'll never win because the keep will keep pulling me over. >> anthony: they retired aunt jemima off the pancake box. >> right. >> anthony: does that mean we've won? >> you know, it's hilarious to me. i heard people making this

argument. black people have always been in white people's cupboards, just cleaning them, usually. around a racetrack at over 150 miles per hour, in traffic, but he stands up for his beliefs, and got the confederate battle flag banned from nascar events. from the nascar cup series, please welcome bubba wallace. >> what's up, my man, how's it going? >> anthony: i'm all right, brother, how are you? >> i'm pumped. i'm a huge fan. just want to let you though. >> anthony: thank you, brother. i'm a huge fan of yours. >> thank you. >> anthony: especially of yours now. how did you get the name "bubba"? >> that's been a popular question as of late. my sister gave me that nickname the day i was born. we don't know why. i don't know if she'll ever admit why. we think she couldn't say "brother", but she's too embarrassed to admit that. ever since i was born i've been known as bubba. >> anthony: my brother, sterling, who's no longer with us, he couldn't pronounce sugar

when he was a baby, he was like, mama, i want some tugga. that's how we got the name "tugga." having the name bubba, you can do two things, play golf or be a race car driver, how did you choose? >> i get mixed up with bubba watson. especially as of late as well. i chose this path, when i was racing go carts at the age of 9. i didn't know what the set path was going to be. i had no aspirations to be where i am today. it just kind of happened. we were having fun, going through all the ranks. one thing led to another. w one door closed, another opened. here we are driving the iconic 43 car for richard petty motor sports.

it's been a heck of a journey. ups and downs, rounds and rounds, mostly left turns, but it's been a fun part of the process. >> anthony: now tell me this. because i know, as a kid growing up, not once did you ever think that you would gain the attention of the president of the united states of america. in a positive or negative way. >> yeah. >> anthony: what are your thoughts on how he's come after you in the media? in the press, and on social media because of what's transpired so far? >> yeah, you know, when i first read it, i was like, man, there's so much more things that are going on in the world that i feel like he should be worried about. but it's hard to get people to understand, especially when the facts are delivered on the table, and they've been there for two weeks now, to be late to the party is one thing, and to be wrong on the factual information is another. but all in all, he did get one thing right, the great officials that continue to stand behind me, nascar drivers and officials

that continue to stand behind me through it all. he got that part right. a great sport that i'm proud to be a part of. >> anthony: for those who may be confused because of the misinformation that's out there, can you explain to our viewers what exactly happened? and i can say this, correct me if i'm wrong. you weren't the person who brought attention to the noose that was in your garage. >> you are correct on that. it was brought to me after the garage was already closed. it had rained sunday, all day, postponed our race till the next day. i was about to go get a bite to eat with fellow competitors, and the president of nascar, phelps had brought it to my attention about 6:30 that night. most of my team, most of the garage, most of the industry was already on a flight back home. so the first person i thought of when it was brought to my attention that there was a noose

found in my garage was a crew member who happens to be african-american on my team. i texted him right away. i said hey, man, are you all right? and he had played it off. he was like, "yeah, what's up"? and i called him and said i guess you haven't heard about what's going on? and he's like, actually i'm the one who found it. i didn't want to tell you and have your mind messed up before the race. i wanted you to have a clear head. it wasn't brought to my attention, it was brought to my attention hours later after the investigation was going through and i woke up monday morning to find out i could potentially be talking to the fbi about it. because it was in their hands now. not once did i report it. i didn't even see the picture of the noose, the garage pull until tuesday after the race, after i'm already home, after my second phone call with the fbi. did not report to. just was told about it and next thing you know, one thing led to another. >> anthony: you know anytime something like this happens

amongst teammates and the brotherhood in any type of sport, we all galvanize around one another, as individuals, as professional athletes, as brothers. how did it make you feel when you saw your brothers of nascar surround you and your car and walk you out? >> yeah, that was a powerful moment there. obviously, you can see the emotion. i tried to walk out before that moment. i had, you know, just a ton of positive energy. i felt like, and then that moment there broke me. and just totally put me in my feels. and it just showed the power and the unity, the love, compassion, understanding that we all have for one another. on any given weekend we're competitors and kind of give each other that look, bragging rights look, like we want to beat each other. in that moment there everybody

let their guard down or let themselves be a human being and show their human being side. i thought that was pretty powerful to show the world that our sport can come together, the sport of nascar, where a lot of people have their doubts about that we show this type of unity and love and understanding and that everybody can do the same thing, so i thought that was so strong and so impactful. >> anthony: i don't think of a better way we can end this interview with you tonight, bubba wallace, than your eloquent answer just now. thank you very much. we all support you brother, and we'll be right back with more "jimmy kimmel live." bubba, i didn't want to make light of the [ bleep ] situation, but you have the second fastest time or you came in second place, the only african-american to take second place and third place. if you're the only african-american in the sport, you're the only african-american who's going to place, bubba! >> that's right, i love it! place that you laughed aboutbad
