warmer for the weekend. i'll have that updated forecast coming up. we know parents all over the bay area are struggling to make school plans for the fall. education is a critical part of building a better bay area. and this morning, marin county's public health department is recommending distanced learning for students and that may make it not as critical a planned proes. amy hollyfield is live with the details. >> reporter: the district was getting a lot of pressure from parents not reopen and just last night, district officials announced that they had changed their mind. the announcement just coming from marin countyffialshat shou to start the school year distance learning, the kids should not plan on being in the class room. marin's public health officer said with the current spike in covid-19 cases, they need more time before bringing kids back to school. officials say that they still hope that they can eventually

bring students back, but now is not the time. it was looking like marin was going to have in-person classes at the start of school, about you concerned parents formed a coalition to push back and even scheduled a protest for this morning, it is set for 10:00 this morning at district headquarters. we're here, it will be interesting to see if they to show up or if they are satisfied with the new decision.to show up or if they are satisfied with the new decision. we'll keen you pop you posted. and in san francisco, school leaders say all 54,000 students will be getting their education online when classes resume next month. the superintendent says the decision was made after reviewing evidence from health officials as well as getting input from staff, students and families. we spoke with the school board president mark sanchez about how difficult it would be to meet the social and emotional needs. >> when i'm on zoom, there is only so much that we can do. at least i can see them and they

100,000 people. remember the goal is 1.8 per 100,000. the virus's reproductive rate in the city now has an infected person passing on the virus to an average of 1.3 people. the acceptable number is 1. >> 1.3 doesn't seem that difference from 1, that far from 1, but if we did not do better, we are looking at major problems by late august and september. >> because of that, hair and nail salons, museums and some other businesses will remain closed indefinitely. when it comes to protecting our health, napa county has tightened up enforcement of the mandatory mask rule and the possibility of getting a fine. and it is not police or deputies who will be in charge of the tickets. wayne freedman found out who is. >> reporter: the urban landscape has begun to look like an operating theater these days.

and it seems to be very agreeable for a lot of people. so glad to hear that because i keep repeating news you didn't want to hear, that bt would be good. let's take a look at what is going on. hazy sunshine today, seasonal high temperatures. sleep well again tonight as more of the same, clouds and temperatures in the 50s roll back across our neighborhoods. still trending slightly warmer as we head into the weekend. here is a look at your cloud forecast. you can see by noon most of the cloud cover is back to the coast. coastal valleys will still be socked in and of course the golden gate will still be pretty foggy. by 3:00, we could see about as much sunshine as we'll get because by 7:00, you can see it marching back to the east for tonight. so that smoky sunshine will help keep us in the low to mid-80s through most of the south bay, about 80 to 84. we do ha87 in morgan hill. and mid to upper 70s most of the peninsula. further north and you've got millbrae at about 71.

department's alleged destruction of evidence from a deadly officer-involved shooting. this is body camera video of the shooting of seaniscod that the windshield of the police vehicle the officer fired through was destroyed and then this car was put back in to service without permission. the city already requested that the so solano county county the shooting and now they want the destruction of evidence to be included in that investigation. the city says an unnamed police department employee has been placed on administrative leave. we did reach out to the vallejo police department for comment but we have not heard anything back. alameda county has permission from the state go beyond the governor newsom's guide lines for reopening. so that means that outdoor dining gets the green light along with the zoo. >> we're so thrilled that we got so much support from alameda county and the state turned it

around within 24 hours. >> the zoo was facings possibility of permanent closure because of a lack of income. only the outdoor areas of the zoo will be open and there are additional safety precautions in place. >> at the zoo you will be outdoors and with just your family group. and you will just briefly pass people. if you add on to that masks and social distancing, it will be a very safe environment. >> so the oakland zoo will open to the general public on wednesday july 29. i should add the san francisco zoo just opened yesterday, you do need reservations. starting today, san mateo county will allow in-person visits to long term care homes. each facility has to apply for permission and they have to verify that they have enough ppe on hand and adequate access to coronavirus testing. under these guidelines, friends and family can do socially distanted and masked outdoor

visits. care facilities have been hit hard and a lot have been closed to visitors since march. santa clara's pop-up testing sites will be open again today. they are testing people with no appointments, no doctor's notes, and you don't even need to have symptoms. you can get results in two to four days. but in many areas of california, the waits are much longer. >> some of the backlog is not in all of the sites where people get tested. they are mostly in the commercial labs that are being used by the state. >> the state is testing a record number of people, more than 108,000 every day. two local doctors say they don't think that the backlog will get any better until there is a national testing strategy. happening today, mark

county near coalinga. satellite shows that it pulsed up a little bit during the overnight hours. so there may be more smoke out there this morning. it scorched more than 14,000 acres and is only 15% contained. and we also have the coyote fire burning just north of it and it has blackened about 1400 acres and is 20% contained. we do have an air quality advisory, but not a spare the air alert. overall levels are supposed to remain on the healthy side. but there could be a few small pockets especially in the south bay and east bay where it could pulse up. here is a look at temperatures under a cloudy sky in san francisco, 52 to about 56 degrees. a lot of mid-50s to low 60s, temperatures really close to where we were yesterday within a degree or two. northf th badg throu the this afternoon.

walmart and best buy the latest major retail toers require shoppers to wear masks. walmart says customers have to start wearing them beginning monday and that also includes sam's club. best buy says shoppers are required to wear their face masks in their stores immediately. now to a reality check on masks.
