we don't know which sports they participate in. so we do know that so far 125 student-athletes have returned to campus in preparation for voluntary outdoor conditioning workouts, berkeley officials, they gave the green light to allow these outdoor practices exactly a month ago. a public health order in the city allows those small groups of 12 to weight train outdoors. and other big name schools like stanford cancelled 11 sports in the fall leaving some skeptical. >> i'm a bit sports guy. i would like to see it. at the same time, you have to make sure these athletes are safe, the people that possibly could attend are going to be safe. >> reporter: "usa today" reporting this morning that student-athletes on 50 college campuses have now tested positive for the coronavirus and analysts and executives we spoke to last night in regards to the uc berkeley story, they are questioning if we will see college football happening this

season at all. julian glover, abc 7 news. happening today, governor newsom is expected to make an announcement on whether or not schools are reopen in person for the fall. up until now, those decisions have been entirely made by the local school district. it is not yet clear if the governor will offer recommendations or strict rules on which districts can reopen. the white house has threatened to cut funding if schools don't fully reopen. >> the president has said unmistakably that he wants schools to open. and he means open in full, kids attending each and every day at their school. the science should not stand in the way of this. >> and you can watch the governor's news conference at noon right here on abc 7, coverage begins at 11:00 a.m. with midday live. many places across the u.s. are pausing or rolling back

coronavirus. i'm caylkaylee hartung, abc new los angeles. uc berkeley officials say it has admitted the most diverse freshman class in more than 30 years. asian americans lead the way, they represent nearly 45% of the class. latinos make up more than 24% of admissions. followed by white with just over 20%. african-americans make up more than 5% of the class. that is an increase of 4% from last year. the chancellor says that the numbers are an indication of efforts to build a campus community that truly represents the state we serve. all right. and look at this, these are brand new images that show what scientists say are the closest views ever captured of the sun. nasa and the european space agency unveiled the images yesterday. and among other things, they show small solar flares that you can see which are called

continues to set record highs. amy hollyfield was the first to find out about the governor's big announcement and she is live in danville with more on this. >> reporter: we're at the san ramon valley school district, these officials have spent a lot of time on this issue this week. last night was their second meeting on this issue and their second vote. earlier in the week, that first vote that they took, they decided that they would have a hybrid method that they would start school with some distance learning and some in-person learning. a combination with kids coming to school a couple days a week. but officials say that new information and word about the governor's announcement caused them to change their mind. and last night they voted on starting school with distance learning only. it is a tough spot for local officials, and some hope the governor will make it easier for them with this announcement today.

and school district will continue efforts to provide computers and also high speed internet access to all students in the city. a network of privately funded security cameras are now operational. all across san francisco. the aim is to make the city safer. chris larsen says that he grew frustrated with the crime he witnessed on russian hill. larsen began funding these community businesses and installed a network of cameras. the more than 1,000 security cameras added an extra level of privacy concerns for some. >> for instance you might not want somebody to know that you are seeking mental health help or that you are seeing immigration attorney because you don't know who will get that footage on the other end. what they will do where it. >> that is where these can be more pro privacy than let's say every house randomly putting up a ring door camera from amazon.

so all clear on our roads something that we worked on yesterday looking at the rate of normal traffic on our bay area bridges. if we zoom into the bay bridge here, we're at 81% of normal traffic for the area, which is interesting. you look at the antioch bridge, we're at 85% of normal traffic. and when i say normal traffic, that is pre-pandemic. so 77% for the benicia bridge. and if we move over to the richmond-san rafael bridge, 77%. but what is interesting here, san mateo bridge, only 61% of normal. and then all the way down to the dumbarton bridge, 54%. and officials believe that is due to people working from home and those southern bridges there not seeing that flow of traffic. now a live look at the bay bridge which is our busiest bridge in the bay area right w.

burning north of advantavacavil. it is burning around 10,000 acres. we'll update you as soon as we learn more. and cal fire just announced that last year's huge fire in sonoma county was caused by electrical transmission lines owned by pg&e. the power lines have long been suspected as the cause of the kincaid fire which started with strong winds and dry vegetation last october. that time lapse shows you how quickly it exploded when it started this geyserville. the fire burned 374 structures. cal fire sent its report to the district attorney's office. part of abc 7's effort to build a better bay area focuses on promoting health in our communities. mark zuckerberg talked about the pandemic with dr. fauci. this was yesterday on a one hour long facebook live. and they talked about how the u.s. responded to covid-19 when the pandemic emerged during the
