we might know you better than you know yourself. 7-eleven. always open. in san francisco we spoke to a single parent who says distance learning is just not working for her kids. >> several summits are reacting to governor newsom's plan on reopening schools in the fall. >> a sweet surprise. an unexpected baby shower spread across an entire community. bringing the heat this weekend. i'll have the temperatures coming up. abc7 news at 11:00 starts right now. >> civil rights hero and congressman john lewis has died. the 80-year-old had been battling cancer for seven months. >> he stood shoulder to shoulder with the legendary dr. martin

luther king jr. in the '60s and continued to fight for equality on capitol hill. a look back at lewis's iconic life. >> reporter: john lewis was born outside troy, alabama, in 1940. the son of share croppers. as a teenager he was drawn to activism surrounding the montgomery bus boycott. in the 1960s he was at the center of nearly every major mole in the civil rights movement. organizing sit-in demonstrations at segregated lunch counters, he was one of the first freedom riders. this shows him with a bandage on his head after he and other riders were beaten, just the beginning of what would be many arrests for the civil rights activist. >> we must all cry together. we want our freedom and we want it now. >> by 1963 at the age of just 23, he was dubbed one of the big six leaders of the civil rights

movement who helped plan the historic march on washington. >> let us not forget that we are involved in a social revolution. >> reporter: he helped spearhead one of the most defining moments of the era, leading more than 600 peaceful protesters across the bridge in selma, alabama in 1965. it was known as muddy sunday. he was struck in the head, suffering a fractured skull at the hands of the police. >> i was the first one to catch the blow. >> reporter: lewis was elected to congress in 1986. he served as u.s. representative of georgia's fifth congressional district where he continued to get into what he called good trouble. >> i got arrested 40 times in the '60s. since i've been in congress, another five times. >> reporter: he was awarded the congressional medal of freedom, the highest civilian honor.

represents. because he could be on both sides by his presence. and he had a humility. as gras it a man as he was, he had this humility that few members of congress have. and i just loved him with all my heart. >> the former san francisco mayor willy brown had been friends with lewis since his activist work in the 1960s. he said young people could carry on his legacy after the death of george floyd. >> when the demonstrators took to the streets in america, if not all over the world, it brought a smile to john lewis' face. because for the first time, all the things that he stood for was beginning to make sense to everybody in the world. >> lewis visited san francisco

many times over the years, often to support charities. house speaker pelosi released a statement on lewis' passing tonight. it read in part today america mourns the loss of one of the greatest heroes of american history. congressman john lewis, the conscience of the congress. he was a titan of the civil rights movement whose goodness, faith and bravery transformed our nation. we sent this lealert on our app. we'll have more all weekend as more tributes come in. >> safety is foundational. safety will ultimately make the determination of how we go about educating our kids, as we move into the fall. >> most california schools will start the fall semester virtually. that was the north america made today by governor newsom. >> schools can physically open for in-person education when the county that they're operating in has been off our monitoring list

for 14 consecutive days. >> with the exception of san maeo, every county in the bay area is now on that watch list. san francisco was added today. this mandate applies to both public and private schools in the state. >> the one thing we have the power to do, to get our kids back into school. wear a mask. >> when schools reopen, children in grades 3 and up must wear a mask or a face shield. children in second grade and below are encouraged to do so but not required. there will be several other safety requirements. teachers and students must maintain six feet of physical distancing. schools must conduct daily temperature checks and school staff will be tested on a rotating basis. >> bringing you the very latest on plans for your child's education in the fall is part of our commitment to building a better bay area. >> abc news reporter lauren martinez spoke with several

school summits fperintendents fr reaction. >> they all agreed, they want to work with students directly. in this reality, they're glad to finally get some clear guidelines. >> great. we have some clarity and we have some structure so that we know exactly what the conditions need to be to reopen school. >> districts and counties on the covid watch list will only be able to do distance learning in the fall. and the summits feel it is about time they have direction. >> i totally wish it had come much sooner. i know that people at all levels have been working so hard.e a video to show they want to follow health guidelines and get back into the classroom. >> take the mask off by the strings and try not to touch your face. >> they're like, i want to go back to school. i'll do whatever i can. >> don austin says the governor's new guidelines offer a degree of certainty. >> overall, i would say like

most of my colleagues, grateful there's at least a metric to tie it to. >> in order to resume in-class instruction, a county must have been off the state's covid watch list for 14 consecutive days. >> we're not real excited about being tied to the outreaches of the county that may have nothing to do with palo alto. but at least it is something that is measurable and we all know what the anchor point is. >> kelly bowers is the superintendent for the livermore school district. >> some disappointment for our students and staff that we can't begin in-person instruction. >> every is districts are creating a plan for what comes after distance learning. >> the hybrid model will be subsequent and we have to go forward starting with distance learning. we've made sure with our imagine teams that there will be a seamless transition. >> the summit said it will be incumbent on communities to do

serious concerns. >> reporter: time to get ready for the mind set. this will impact 55,000 students in san francisco alone. >> i have to still do online work. but also i have to help my kids with their work which is kind of hard, too. one is in middle school and one is in elementary school. >> reporter: she is concerned about her kids' education. distance learning was brutal for them. >> reporter: do you think you learned in the last couple months of the school year? >> not really. >> reporter: they couldn't clueded more than 100,000 san franciscans do not have high speed internet access at home. >> the wi-fi didn't work for two days straight. if there's no wi-fi, they can't learn, period. so sometimes i have to go to another location just for them to complete their work. >> reporter: the school district

refreshing. you don't have to worry about it getting too hot. take a long at the temperatures. going from 86 tomorrow, san jose, oakland coming in at just 68 tomorrow afternoon. tracking the fog along the coastline. it hasn't quite made its push into the bay side visibility is good. it will be warmer tomorrow. the hazy sunshine for some of you and cooler weather early next week. air quality advisory continues through tomorrow. it is the smoke from the mineral fire in fresno county that will keep the air quality in the moderate range for santa clara valley. here's a look at the forecast.

the blues that you see here is smoke aloft in the upper layers of the atmosphere. you may not smell it initially but be prepared for seeing some haze out there. sunday, the winds will push some of the smoke out of the bay area. so better air quality is expected by then. the fog forecast will show you the fog foot print tomorrow morning. 7:00 a.m., many of you will wake up to the gray along the coast. for the afternoon, sunshine other than the beaches. temperatures will be in the 40s in places like santa rosa. watch out for some patchy drizzle. and for the afternoon, it is a beautiful day. in the south bay, i think we can get away with short sleeved weather. hazy sunshine, gilroy, 90 degrees on the peninsula. 82 degrees in redwood city. 65 in half moon bay. a pretty mild bay. down san francisco, 68 degrees. the temperatures coming up in the north bay.

the a's welcome the angels july 24th for the regular season opener. we're getting so close. the left-handed pitcher has been missing since battling coronavirus. the 22-year-old had missed all the summer camp and is so far spending quarantine in south florida. he was surprised he tested positive because he didn't have any symptoms. now he says he's happy to be back. >> probably the best day of 2020 for me by far.
