happened. he has led some across the edmund pettis bridge in selma where lewis and other peaceful demonstrators were beaten by police, known as bloody sunday. >> i would challenge any of us, who's more courageous than john lewis? he was arrested over 40 times. he was beaten many times. and yet always nonviolent. >> i feel like i have an obligation to do what i can to tell the story because i was a witness. >> reporter: in 2015, the georgia congressman spoke with abc 7 news about his front-row seat in the 1960s civil rights movement. >> you'll be sitting there in an orderly, peaceful, nonviolent fashion and someone would come up and spit on us or put a lighted cigarette in our hair or down our backs. that happened. >> reporter: barbara lee said lewis was a close friend. she said he was inspired by the black lives matter muchlt. he even posed for this selfie near the mural in washington, d.c. >> the civil rights movement,

selma, this was a movement of young people and john lewis saw our young people as a continuation in 2020 of that movement. >> reporter: mayor london breed honoring congressman lewis by having flags here at city hall lowered to half staff. tonight the building will be lit in red, white and blue, paying tribute to the civil rights icon. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> we sent this alert on our free abc 7 news app when we first learned of lewis' passing. we will continue to update our app and website all weekend as more tributes to the congressman come in. to developing news out of daly city where two people, including a child, are in critical condition following a fire this morning. it started just after 8:00 a.m. in a home on bismarck near mission street. firefighters saw flames coming from the kitchen and the house was filled with heavy smoke. they then found a man and child unconscious in a bedroom. the cause is still under investigation, but firefighters

emphasized making sure people have working smoke detectors in their homes. they say there was delayed detection with this fire. to the east bay where flames tore through a building that was once home to hayward's iconic holiday bowl. the building on mission boulevard has been empty since the bowling lanes closed in 2005. it had been a popular bowling spot since 1960s -- the 1960s, and was once the largest bowling center in northern california. the massive fire started at about 6:00 last night. fire crews remained at the scene this morning dousing hot spots. the cause of this fire is still unkno unknown. now to major headlines in the coronavirus pandemic. california's positivity rate, a key indicator of community spread, is trending upward in the 14-day average. that word today comes from the state department of public health. south bay congresswoman ana eschew is demanding to know why the cdc was removed from the

data collection process. the trump administration requires hospitals to report the data saying the cdc system was too slow. and marin county is set to decide on tuesday whether the county can fine shelter-in-place violators, including people who have gatherings. coronavirus cases are up 40% worldwide in just the last three weeks. here in the u.s., masks and in-person school are still big topics of debate. here's megan tevrizian. >> reporter: today the number of confirmed coronavirus cases rising around the country and the world. in the u.s., covid-19 cases up nearly 20% from last week. >> you have a choice. you can wear a mask or have a tube in your mouth. >> reporter: 28 states plus puerto rico and washington, d.c., now issuing mask mandates. more retailers like lowe's an home depot joining walmart, starbucks and cvs requiring face coverings at their stores nationwide. this comes as states like

in the east bay a display of art and activism at a pop-up event in oakland this afternoon, condemning police brutality and systemic racism. abc 7 news was inside the gallery where artist deandre drake showcased his work titled my skip is not a crime. the centerpiece features an air-brushed casket with writing reflecting the thoughts of the community. drake said he was inspired by daughter mentioned that her dad changed the world, so it just resonated with me. i wanted to do what i could and do my part in what i could do to change the world so i used my art as my attempt to make

change. >> the uncle of oscar grant, who was killed by b.a.r.t. police on new 09 ao shared his story. part of our efforts to build a better bay area include focusing on issues of race and social justice. today vendors and business owners in vallejo were urged to protest and promote the city at the same time. organizers called it a merch march. local vendors and business owners set up in front of city hall. organizers also set up a voter registration booth. developing news now, smoke from a wildfire burning in the central valley continues to affect our air quality. the fire started on monday in fresno county. flames destroyed four buildings and have scorched 37 square miles. evacuation areas are in effect in fresno county and evacuation warnings are in place in

monterey county. that fire is expected to be fully contained by tuesday. but today as meteorologist drew tuma tells us, we may notice some hazy air in higher elevations in the bay area and certainly, drew, the smoke has been a problem since wednesday. >> yeah, you probably noticed in our sky hazy sunshine thanks to that smoke coming from the mineral fire emanating from the north into the bay area. it will remain in our atmosphere both today and tomorrow, so we do have an air quality advisory in effect for the weekend and it's really that smoke from the mineral fire that is impacting air quality most in the santa clara valley and along the coast and much of the central bay. now, air quality does improve later this week with cooler weather moving in. we'll have that in the accuweather forecast in a few minutes, guys. another company is going through a name change in an effort to be more culturally sensitive. no more trader jose. coming up, the effort to get a supermarket chain to rename some
