millionaire." marcy dpgonzalez with a look at the legend's life. >> off sleeping problem, joanna. >> reporter: regis philbin's eclectic interview style, folksy banter, and self-deprecating sense of humor made him the talk show host others wanted to emulate. philbin was raised in the bronx. after a stint in the navy, he headed west to san diego, where he landed his first talk show, the regis philbin show. >> we'll be right back. >> philbin's sprint to talk show superstardom brought him next to los angeles, where he took over hosting duties from steve allen before finally bursting on to the national stage as the sidekick on the joey bishop show. >> the hottest thing on record, regis philbin. >> yeah, what is that?! >> it's live with rooemgs aegis kathie lee. >> he was back home in new york, sharing interview with kathie lee gifford. their show became a ratings winner, with the popular duo working together for 15 years.

york. >> regis made several stops in san francisco over the years. he and kathie lee gifford taped an episode of their talk show in front of a live audience in the marina district in 1989. philbin took part in an event in san francisco in 2014 to celebrate st. patrick's day. philbin, who's half irish, and his wife, joy, attended an annual luncheon featuring the who's who of the bay area and beyond. we first sent out the news of regis philbin's passing at 12:50 this afternoon through the abc 7 news app. it's a great way to stay on top of stories and breaking news as it comes to our newsroom. just be sure you enable the push alert feature. turning now to the coronavirus pandemic and california has once again topped 10,000 cases in a day. earlier this week, the state hit 12,000. another 151 deaths have been reported. another trend that is ticking upward during the surge. also concerning, the seven-day

positivity rate is 8%, which is the state's threshold. over the past two weeks, it was 7.5%. in san francisco, the city is increasing its effort to get the virus under control. expanding the mask mandate for people at least 10 years old to have a face covering. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is covering this for us for tonight and joins us live to explain all of the changes. cornell? >> dionne, new covid cases are surging here in san francisco. that's prompting new rules for wearing face masks, and that includes kids. >> reporter: david guccione was giving out free samples of cambucha, and you could get a free sample if you were wearing a face mask. signs reminding people to wear masks are everywhere in the park, but not everybody was playing by the rules. >> rather be safe than sorry. >> holly from san ramon is

spending the daughter with her daughter in delores park. new rules from the san francisco department of public health now require kids 10 and older to wear a mask in public. she is 7 1/2, but mom isn't taking chances. >> i will still keep her wearing one, even though she's under 10. she'll wear one until all of this is cleared up. >> reporter: mill valley pediatrician lisa dana says kids are still at risk. >> i think we have to be really careful about the transmission and we do know that children can transmit it, even when they have no symptoms. >> reporter: the new update requires face coverings for all food service workers and even if you're alone in common areas, like an elevator. dr. grant colfax says in a statement, substantial scientific evidence shows when combined with physical distancing and other health and safety practices, face coverings significantly reduce the chance of covid-19 spreading in the co. i a registed franciska pitney knows exactly how face face face

coverings are. >> i'm required in my job to wear mask and face shield. so when i'm out, i have to do the same thing. >> reporter: the bottom line, pretty much anytime you're out in public here in san francisco, you need to be wearing a face mask. the new order also says, if you have a medical exemption that says that you can't wear a face mask, you must be carrying a doctor's note to prove it. live in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. that we can get. cornell, thanks. well, one of san francisco's oldest restaurants has reopened, after closing for several months because of covid-19. customers can now enjoy outdoor dining and takeout service at the st. frances fountain at 24th and york streets in the mission districts. >> we opened up last week, during the pandemic. we're just utilizing the outdoor spaces required by law. it's been a bit of a slow

opening, but we've got a lot of positive reviews from people who have come by, saying we're glad to see you're opening up. >> st. frances fountain opened in 1918 and endured the spanish flu epidemic at the end of world war i. the diner's owner says he'll try offering limited service first, but he might close the historic restaurant if things don't work out. >> a specialty cake decorating and bake historic in the north bay is closing its doors after more than 57 years. abc 7 was in san rafael today for cake art supply's going out of business sale. loyal customers lined up down the block showing the family business its support. cake art offers specialty designs on cakes and sells cooking products. and they teach classes on cookies, candies, and even eyav lostost of their revenue through their classes. >> it's very sad. it's -- you know, it's just really, really hard after being here so long. we have people that come in that came as children and they're bringing their children back.

so, a big loss. >> collins hopes she'll be able to reopen again. next thursday is their last day. ahappening tonight, the oakland zoo is putting on an evening of entertainment to stay open. tonight's event starts at 7:00 on the zoo's website. it's call lollapalooza. the oakland zoo says it's been closed since march 17th and it will be the last major skzoo in the state to resume operations. it's set to reopen to the public on wednesday. this weekend, thousands of masks are being made new again thanks to the work of dedicated volunteers. ucsf dr. inor sawyer is reading a team called the scrappy strappers in refurbishing face coverings. today was part ii of a bill that started yesterday in danville. 6,000 masks were prepared on friday, and they hope to finish 5,000 masks today.

sanitizing, that is the easy part, where a team of doctors, engineers, and specialists also replace the straps. >> so what we did was, we did a process of sorting through, what are the best staples, what are the best processes for fixation. did a little strength testing with it, because an orthopedist and an engineer are just meant to do that. >> the team has finished 40,000 masks since forming the group. once completed, they are donating to non-profit groups. well, a second alameda county sheriff's employee has died of covid-19 complications. the department's second coronavirus death in 24 hours. in a tweet, the office says it was a civilian non-sworn staff member who died. they did not release further details. thursday night, a deputy who was a 25-year veteran of the force died. he was the last of the big six civil rights leaders. the celebration of the life of john lewis, congressman, and activist is underway this weekend. a look at the tribute in his

a series of tributes began today for one of america's greatest champions of civil rights. longtime activist and congressman, john lewis.

a military honor guard carried lewis' casket into a ceremony near his childhood home in troy, alabama. 800 people attended today's service. lewis' family asked them to wear face coverings while they reflected on his legacy, going back to crusading for racial equality, alongside martin luther king jr. in the 1960s. >> may his willingness to cause good trouble prevent us from tolerating injustice. may his example inspire a new generation. >> lewis will line le in state tomorrow. many colleagues called lewis the, quote, conscience of congress. and on monday, he'll receive the rare honor of laying in repose underneath the u.s. capitol dome. people demanded more funding for schools today during a caravan protest in san francisc francisco. >> organizers called it a day of

action for families to honor black youth. the group demanded the defunding of police departments and a stop to violence. the caravan started at candlestick park before making its way through nearby neighborhood. you're looking at a black lives matter mural painted on sevastopol's town plaza. about 250 people volunteered to help finish the project tomorrow. a group of young activists organized painting the mural after being energized by rallies and protests across america. and sevastopol's city council approved their plans earlier in the month. >> it was last month a fire damaged a famous piece of artwork in san francisco's presidio. and we have an update on the investigation, as to who might be responsible for causing this fire to go up in >> temperatures warmed up today with more blue skies and we have a beautiful picture as we look towards the bay bridge. we have another gorgeous day ahead of us and more typical summer weather.

we're learning that the fire that burned the wooden fire sculpture in the presidio was caused by a person. the fire department tells news that the fire is incendiary. investigators are not yet sure in the fire was intentionally set. the fire on june 23rd charred the goldsworthy fire that was built out of fallen trees in the area. texas is getting lashed tonight by hurricane hanna, which made landfall this afternoon. people have been asked to stay home and just ride out the storm. hanna picked up a little strength with winds now at 80 miles an hour, but that is not the biggest threat. meteorologist are worried about thrash flooding from all of the rain. its current track is taking it south of corpse krus christie a

into mexico by sunday. and it's these days that make me so lucky to think we're in the bay area. >> look outside and see the blue skies behind me. >> we are definitely lucky to be in the -- yes, we have got blue skies, our biggest concern is the fog and the marine layer. so not much to worry about. i want to show you live doppler 7 and show you what's going on right now. there were some thunderstorms going on throughout the reno area and parts of the sierra, but for us, we even see the clouds pull back from the coast, so we got sunshine even along the beaches today. here's a live view, though, from mt. tam, and you can see that the fog is going to pull its way back in, it's starting to do that right now and fill in overnight into tomorrow morning. current temperatures were also warmer, compared to yesterday. san francisco currently 65, oakland, 70 degrees, mountain view, 78, and san jose and gilroy in the upper 70s. pacifica at 63 degrees right now. as we look towards the east bay hills, though, you will see lots of blue skies with some high clouds there, as well.

and they are going to get nothing but sunshine all day tomorrow. temperatures there range from 70s to even 90s. santa rosa, 79. napa, 74. fairfield and concord and livermore are all near 90 degrees right now. and this time, as we look towards the roof from our kgo roof camera towards pier 15, you can see the flag blowing a bit there. what you can expect is a typical summertime pattern. we'll see mild temperatures at the coast to warm temperatures inland. and that means morning clouds, afternoon sunshine. you know the typical drill. there will be minor changes in the temperatures next week. we'll dip slightly on wednesday, and then come back again, up again for next weekend. here's a look at the forecast animation. so you notice tonight, the clouds will start to fill in through the bay and in parts of the north bay and it will pull back again to the coast. so more sunshine for everyone once again. if you like today, i think you'll like tomorrow, as well. we'll see temperatures on the mild to warm side. overnight lows will -- overnight lows will mainly be in the

mid-50s around the bay. san francisco, 55. oakland, 58 as well as san jose. and some milder spots like antioch and lakeport in the low 60s. and check out tomorrow's sunshine. mild, even at the beaches, half moon bay in the mid-60s. san francisco, 67. and then around the bay, we'll see t-shirt and shorts weather, mid-70s to near 80. oakland, 74. san mateo, 75. palo alto, 80 degrees. and the warmest spots will be in the low-to-mid-90s in some of the interior areas like fairfield, antioch, 94. also very comfortable in santa rosa and napa in the low 80s there. here's a look at the week ahead in concord. temperatures tomorrow will hover around 90 degrees and we'll stay that way wednesday it will dip, and then we'll have cooler and breezier weather again as the onshore flow increases and we'll climb back up into the low 90s. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. you can see a very similar pattern there, as well. so over the next few days, enjoy plenty of sunshine with
