topped 10,000 cases in a day. earlier this week, the state hit 12,000. another 151 deaths have been reported. another trend that's ticking upward during the surge. also, concerning, the seven-day positivity rate is 8%, which is the state's threshold. over the past two weeks, it was 7.5%. in san francisco, the city is increasing its effort to get the virus under control. it's expanding the mask mandate for people, at least ten years old, to have a face covering. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is following the story, and joins us, live, to explain the changes. >> dion, covid cases and hospitalizations are surging in san francisco. that's prompting new rules for face masks and that includes kids. david was giving out free samples in delores park. >> to me, it makes sense.

the more people in masks, the more safer we could possibly be. >> signs reminding people to wear masks are everywhere in the park. but not everybody was playing by the rules. >> rather be safe than sorry. >> holly from san ramon is spending the day with her daughter in delores park. new rules from the department of public health now require kids 10 and older to wear a mask in public. uriah is 7 1/2 but she isn't taking chances. >> even though she's under 10, she'll wear one until all this is cleared up and away. >> pediatrician says kids are still at risk. >> i think we have to be really careful about the transmission. and we do know that children can transmit it, even when they have no symptoms. >> the new health order requires face coverings be worn on sidewalks, parks, and for all food service workers. and even if you are alone, in common areas, like an elevator, dr. grant colfax said, in a statement, substantial scientific evidence shows that,

the st. francis fountain in the mission district. >> we opened up last week during the pandemic, we're just utilizing the outdoor space, as required by law. it's been a bit of a slow opening, but we've got a lot of positive reviews from people who have come by saying we're glad to see you opening up. >> st. francis fountain opened in 1918 and endured the spanish flu epidemic at the end of world war i. the diner's owner says he will try offering limited service, first. but he may close the historic restaurant, if things don't work out. >> cake decorating and bakery is closing its doors after more than 57 years. in san rafael today for going out of business sale. customers lined up and down the block showing the family business their support. they offer specialty designs on cakes and sell cooking products. they also teach classes on cookies, chocolate, candy, even gingerbread houses. the co-owner tells us they have lost most of their revenue

through the classes. >> it's very sad. you know, it's just really, o we have people that come in that came as children, and they're bringing their children back. so big loss. >> collins hopes she will be able to reopen again. next thursday will be their last day. happening tonight. the oakland zoo is putting on an evening of entertainment to help raise money to stay open. tonight's event starts at 7:00 on the zoo's website. oakland zoo.org. it's a fundraiser featuring talks with zookeepers, auctions, and a performance live from the zoo. the oakland zoo says it's been closed since march 17th and it will be the last major zoo in the state to resume operations. it is set to reopen to the public on wednesday. >> this weekend, thousands of masks are being made new, again, thanks to the work of dedicated volunteers. ucsf doctor sawyer is leading a team called the scrappy

strappers and refurbishing face coverings. today was part two of what started yesterday in danville. they hope to finish 5,000 masks today. sanitizing, that is the easy part. where a team of doctors, engineers, and specialists, also, replace the straps. >> so what we did was, did a process of sorting through, what are the best staples? what are the best processes for fixation? did a little strength testing with it because an orthopedist and engineer are just meant to do that. >> the team has finished 40,000 masks since forming the group. once completed, they are donating them to nonprofit groups. 14 petaluma firefighters are under quarantine tonight while one of their co-workers recover from covid-19. on south mcdowell boulevard is closed until it can be cleaned. the rancho adobe will help respond to emergencies while

a series of tributes began today for one of america's greatest champions of civil rights. longtime activist and congressman, john lewis. a military honor guard carried lewis's casket into a ceremony near his childhood home in troy, alabama. 800 people attended today's service, and lewis's family asked them to wear face coverings. while they reflected on his legacy, going back to crusading for racial equality, alongside martin luther king jr., in the 1960s.

>> lewis will be -- will lie in state tomorrow at the alabama state capitol. many colleagues called lewis the, quote, conscience of congress. and on monday, he will receive the rare honor of lying in repose, beneath the u.s. capitol dome. this afternoon, cars paraded down main street in walnut creek for the no justice, no peace march. participants covering their vehicles with black lives taken too soon placards. and you are looking at the mural painted on town's plaza. about 250 people volunteered to help finish the product yesterday. a group of young activists organized painting the mural after being energized by rallies across america and the city council approved their plans earlier this month. >> well, it was the last month of fire damage -- last month that fire damaged a famous piece of artwork in san francisco. and we have an update on the investigation as to who might be responsible for causing this fire to go up in flames.

we are learning the fire was caused by a person. the san francisco fire department tells abc 7 the fire is incendiary. ruling out things like an electrical issue. charred the golds worthy >> turning to the weather now. lots of blue skies out there. eric, we see it behind you. >> we do, indeed. francis. >> yes, we had lots of blue skies. temperatures warmed up today. but we are already starting to see the clouds return to san francisco. and it will separate inland overnight, once again. here is a look at live doppler 7. and you notice we have most of the clouds off to the coast. we even saw some thunderstorms, over the reno area and through parts of the sierra. now, as we take a look outside,

you see some of the coastal clouds making their way back into the bay area. current temperatures, right now, starting to cool down. san francisco, down to 63 degrees. oakland, 68. mountain view and san jose in the mid-70s as well as gilroy, pacifica. but over towards the bay, towards mt. diablo from the hills, we saw meant of blue skies today. and temperatures still hanging on to some of those upper 80s some some spots. like fairfield, 88. livermore, down to 86. and santa rosa, 75 degrees. i want to show you the forecast animation with the fog moving in. you will see, after tonight, it'll spread in around the bay. and parts of the north bay. and even across into the east bay. it pulls back tomorrow afternoon. mostly sunny conditions, with partly cloudy conditions at the coast. so temperatures will be mild, once again. overnight lows will mainly be in the mid 50s around the bay san

francisco, 55. oakland, 57. san jose, 58. and some of the milder spots will be antioch and lake port in the mid 60s. and also, overnight, for tomorrow morning -- or rather, tomorrow afternoon, we'll see mild temperatures at the beaches. mid 60s there. to mid 90s inland. so, around the bay, really comfortable weather. i think t-shirt and shorts weather. in oakland, san mateo, mid 70s. san jose, 83 degrees. san francisco, also comfortable at 67. and look for some low 80s through parts of the north bay. here is the kaccuweather seven-day forecast. hitting mid 90s in some of the warmer locations. and at the coast, 60s. the wide range of temperatures and this typical summertime pattern will continue over the next few days. but wednesday, you will notice a dip in temperatures with breezier conditions as this onshore flow increases. and then, high pressure builds, once again. we'll see warmer temperatures.
