after the trump administration sent federal agents to the city. good evening. i'm dion lim. >> and i'm eric thomas. the protesters marched from oscar grant plaza to lake merritt. you can see protesters holding up peace signs as they walk around cars, at one point fireworks were fired at the police department with black lives matter, and there were lasers being pointed and the building was also spray round 10:15 a small debris fire broke out at the alameda county superior courthouse in downtown oakland. firefighters put it out quickly. firefighters have not named the cause of the fire but in a tweet oakland police blamed it on, quote, agitators within the crowd of protesters. one more look at that protest tonight. again, most protesters have been peaceful. we'll keep you posted on any updates here and on our website

pena. >> reporter: at any given time sideshows like this one have been emerging all across vallejo. >> just barely a week and a half ago it was 3 1/2 hours as well and the police were called multiple times and they can't do anything. >> reporter: the vallejo police department reporting, quote, an overwhelming number of calls from residents reporting this illegal activity and hindering officers ability to respond to critical incidents. james is among those who say his family is highly concerned for their safety. >> it's scary. i mean, two weeks ago we heard over a hundred gunshots and the police never came. >> reporter: gunshots that according to this resident make his neighborhood sound like a war zone. >> this last one was like assault rifles back and forth. they're shooting at people back and forth in cars. >> reporter: vallejo police identifying these four intersections as the most problematic areas where tire

marks and burned tires are left behind. this is one of those problematic areas. vallejo police estimating approximately 100 vehicles and at least 300 people involved in these sideshows at any given time. this olice department now vowing to crack down on these sideshows and announcing a group of resources working together with salono county sheriff's office and the california highway patrol among with others and adding, quote, officers will issue citations, seize vehicles and if necessary make arrests. reidents now hoping this can bring peace back to their city. >> some designated areas they can do it where it's not endangering people. turning now to the coronavirus pandemic. california has once again topped 10,000 cases in a day. earlier this week the state hit 12,000. another 151 deaths have been

reported. also worrying the positivity rate is 8% which is the state's threshold over the past two weeks it was 7.5%. more on the coronavirus pandemic now, and california has once again topped 10,000 cases a day as eric mentioned. we are getting information right now of 14 petaluma firefighters under quarantine tonight while one of their coworkers recovers from covid-19. petaluma 13 will remain closed until it is fully clean. it is expected to reopen on monday. officials tell us the sick firefighter tested positive for covid-19ny 19 hes goodtind but right t petaluma fire department faces a challenge to fill shifts vacated by the quarantined firefighters. >> over 15 members out that's a significant portion of our department. with only three stations that means many of the other members

now currently on duty will remain on duty until other members are cleared and able to come back. >> the rancho adobe fire department will assist petaluma firefighters in responding to emergencies for the time being. governor gavin newsom praised two fallen california law enforcement officers, alameda county deputy sheriff oscar walter rojja and a los angeles police officer both dying from covid-19. he said, quote, the deaths of these two heroes is a very real and painful reminder the risks these men and women face every single day protecting the people of california. he also extended condolences to the families of the deputy and the officer. we're also learning more tonight about a civilian of the alameda county sheriff's department who died from covid-19. 61-year-old valerie joined the agency in 1997. the sheriff said, quote, we're truly heartbroken by your

passing. she leaves behind her three children a 13 grandchildren. as we cover the coronavirus pandemic here at abc 7 we are looking at ways it can kratransm the bay area. the economy is one of five topics we're honed in as we work to build a better bay area amid the pandemic. in an effort to help the economy san francisco opening up parts of valencia street in the mission district to pedestrians only. two blocks between 16th and 17th and 18th and 19th will be closed to traffic. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez has reaction now from business owners. >> reporter: a two block stretch of san francisco's valencia street is now open for pedestrians and closed to cars. >> it's getting business so it's helpful a r: los amigos restaurant opened in june despite the pandemic.

he was a fixture on television for decades. long time television host regis philbin has died at the age of 88 just one month short of his 89th birthday. he co-hosted live with regis and kathie lee which later became live with regis and kelly and hosted the abc show who wants to be a millionaire. a look at the legend's life. >> reporter: he was a television original, a talk show icon for six decades. when news came that he passed away the accolades came in from all corners. jimmy kimmel tweeting he leaves behind a beautiful family and a tv legacy that will likely go on

we're looking at the downtown area. temperatures dropping into the 50s and 60s. santa rosa currently 55, novato 67 and fairfield, concord and livermore in the 60s. clouds will move in and spill in from the bay and into the north bay and east bay, and then tomorrow afternoon it'll pull back. once again plenty of sunshine for everybody with partly cloudy conditions at the coast, but it's going to be a pretty nice beach day tomorrow. overnight lows will be typical as well. in the mid-50s around the bay, san francisco 55, oakland, and san jose 58 with the clouds as well coming into the north bay. santa rosa 53, and some low 60s out there and also antioch. and tomorrow look for the warmth to build once again. just gorgeous outside tomorrow with some party cloudy conditions at the coast. it'll be mild at the beaches, mid-60s there half moon bay, and

really comfortable around the bay with mid-70s to near 80s, san mateo, 75, palo alto, 80, san jose 83, and low 90s for some of the interior areas like concord and livermore. low 80s around santa rosa and napa so just be gorgeous to get outside tomorrow as well. here's a look at the week ahead. so temperatures will be near 90 degrees in concord, but notice on wednesday things really take a dip, and that's because we have a stronger onshore flow from a trough moving in. and this will provide breezier condition and cooler temperatures for everybody. but then that quickly moves out. then thursday, friday, into saturday things build up again as high pressure builds and warmth builds. hot inland tomorrow for some of the warmest areas hitting the mid-90s around the bay, just comfortable. so grab your sunscreen and sunglasses with your mask. at the coast mid-60s so the wide range of temperatures continues

once again, good evening. i'm dion lim. >> and i'm eric thomas. in the headlines tonight hundreds of people marched through oakland this evening in solidarity with protesters in oakland. at one point during the march fireworks were shot towards the police department with black lives matter above it. oakland police have reported some vandalism and a small debris fire they say was started by an agitator in the crowd. overall the march has been peaceful. the vallejo police department is vowing to crack down on-side shows by partnering with other agencies. neighbors say they are frequently plagued by the sound of screeching tires and gunshots late into the night. officers say the amount of calls they receive from sideshows prevents from from responding to more important calls. san francisco is opening up parts of the street to pedestrians only. two blocks between 16th and 17t1

anyt pli youed toe wearing a fa. and according to the health order if you have a medical exemption preventing you from wearing a mask you must have a doctors note to prove it. in san francisco cornell bernard, abc 7 news. this weekend thousands of masks are being made new again thank tuesday the work of dedicated volunteers. a ucf doctor is leading a team called the scrappy strappers in refurbishing face coverings. 6,000 masks were prepared friday and they hope to finish 5,000 masks today. sanitizing that's the easy part with a team of doctors, engineers and specialists replace the straps. >> so what we did was did a process of sorting through what are the best staples, what are the best processes for fixation, did a little strength testing with it because an orthopedist and an engineer are meant to do that. >> the team has finished 40,000 masks since forming the group. once completed they're donated
