firework displays in the interest of covid safety. so instead the people of los angeles did this. >> these are illegal fireworks going off in the city of los angeles right now. our helicopter's been flying for the last 10 minutes, 15 minutes or so, and there are massive fireworks going off in pretty much every direction that you see here. jasmine, our local fire departments and police departments have been begging people not to do this, but it seems tonight they are not listening to those calls. >> well, maybe they just can't hear those calls because an m-80 blew out their eardrums. you know, l.a. has a reputation of being full of rich people with dogs in their purses. but i was born here and that's the l.a. that i know. this weekend we saw lots of maskless people out partying as if they've never even heard of the coronavirus. and the scene at diamond lake in michigan on saturday was particularly infectious. ♪

really naturally. so, yeah, yeah. that's what i do. >> that's what you do? >> notice they didn't ask me to come in and guest host. so -- [ laughter ] maybe whatever my tactic is, it didn't work. >> no, no, no, no. they just know you're busy. they just know you're busy. now, how are you holding up during this quarantine time? what do you do to kill time every day? >> honestly, i've been really busy. i have pattern, that we had a launch recently for phase two. all of our styling products, pattern. it's been a lot of zooming, a lot of cooking. it's really interesting that cleaning, laundry, cooking, kimmel, calling your mom, like all these things are the same level. deciding on packaging, pitching a project. they're all the same level of importance. >> right. you mentioned calling your mom, which is something i have to do

almost every other day with my mother. both of our parents are from the same generation. is your mother technically savvy? can she facetime? do you guys do group facetimes and chats? >> my mom is actually great. she'll pop up on a zoom, and i'm like, why do you look so gorgeous? she's like what, i'm just in my sweats. she's like gorgeous. so my mom is really technically savvy. we have group family threads. my dad on the other hand, this is what doing a facetime with my dad. he's like -- can you see me, sweetheart? i'm like no, dad, i cannot see you. i can see you, sweethart. i'm like dad, just move the camera. so my dad on the other hand is not as technically savvy. >> my mother calls it facegramming and instabooking. she confuses the two. she confuses the two.

street in front of the white house black lives matter plaza, but just to be safe, in case trump didn't get the message, she had this giant mural visible from space painted there, too. please say hello to mayor muriel bowser. >> hi, anthony. thanks for having me. >> thank you for being a part of this. how are you? >> i'm doing fantastic. >> we're going to just jump right into the mural. and the renaming of the street. why did you do it? >> well, anthony, i think you saw, like so many americans saw, peaceful protesters in front of the white house after a horrendous murder witnessed by the world attacked by their government. and what we saw here in washington, d.c., was federal forces, national guards, police that were unidentified slowly moving onto d.c. streets, away from the white house and out

into our city, into local washington. we really felt that we had to push them back. we did all that we could, using all of our arguments and persuasion and going to the media. and we were able to push those guards back and reclaim our street in front of the white house, which was so important to us. sending an affirming message at a very pivotal time in the nation's history, we think, is also a good thing. >> now, this is your second term as mayor of d.c. has this been your most challenging year thus far? >> i will tell you, we didn't think 2020 would bring a global pandemic. and we certainly could have never thought about having to shut our city down and economy down, and businesses and so many people being out of work because of covid. sustained demonstrations, as well, have been very challenging. no, we couldn't imagine it.

and it has been incredibly challenging. but i will tell you, all the people who work for us in d.c., 37,000 d.c. government workers, our businesses and residents have done exactly what we've asked. we've been able to blunt the curve of covid. and hopefully that means we'll have a safe reopening of our economy in the very near future. >> okay. switching reels, let's talk about d.c. statehood. >> yes. >> let's talk about why it's so important for the district of columbia to become a state, and why has it taken this long, and hasn't happened yet. >> i'm so glad you're talking about this on late night tv so millions of americans will know that the residents of their nation's capital are not treated equally. they will know that our congresswoman doesn't have a vote. they will know we don't have two senators. and that's just un-american.

we pay taxes. we go to wars. we do everything that is asked of us as american citizens. but we're not represented. so the roots of our lack of statehood go back and we think are rooted in slavery. we know and we've heard from the highest levels of office in our land that people are against us becoming a state because they think we will elect two democrats to the senate. but we all know that our american citizenship is not based on whether we're democrats or republicans. and statehood shouldn't be based on whether we're democrats or republicans. just that we pay our full share and we want our full representation. >> and in saying you pay your full share, of your 700,000 constituents or residents of the district of columbia you guys pay more taxes than more than 22 states in the country.

and because you are not a state you've missed out on $750 million in the stimulus package that could have helped the district of columbia and its residents. >> right. so anthony, sometimes people think you're just a little district. the fact is, we have more residents than montana and vermont, and a similar number of residents, and we're a growing city, than two other states. and we give more to the federal government than we get back. so there's a misconception out there that everything that we do is paid for by the federal government. but the last time i checked my pay stub, i pay federal taxes. >> right. >> and that's the same for every taxpayer in the district of columbia. we pay our federal taxes, but we don't get our fair share back. >> okay. ladies and gentlemen, there you have it. mayor muriel bowser of the district of columbia, hopefully soon to be, and we're going to
