yesterday, we have very little fire history. we're talking up to 100 years of no fires in this area. all those fuels are being consumed because it was so decadent and heavily fuel loaded. that contributed to the massive columns. >> overnight the fire was only 5% contained. officials say it may be the result of two fires intentionally set. turning to the coronavirus task force we've entered a new phase because of how quickly the virus is spreading. the cdc is predicting more than 180,000 deaths in the u.s. by august 22nd. it comes amid growing concerns about schools re-opening. and pro sports resuming. we have the overnight developments. >> reporter: a new warning about the spread of the virus as the u.s. braces for 30,000 new deaths in the coming weeks. >> what we're seeing today is different from march and april. it's extraordinarily widespread.

the bus or subway to work may not be as risky as you might thing when it comes to getting coronavirus. i spoke with dr. shashank ravi. we talked about the debate of re-opening schools. we began with what's being called the new phase of this pandemic. dr. ravi, let's begin with that new headline from dr. deborah birx. she said we're in a new phase of the pandemic with the virus extraordinarily widespread. what did you take away from her statement? >> we're seeing the virus is it shows that we can't say that anyone is immune to the spread and as a nation we need to come together to work together towards the safety and precautions that can help limit the spread of the virus. >> there's new research out on public transportation. studies in europe and asia suggest that riding public buses and subways may not be a major source of transmission for this virus. your thoughts on this research?

>> it's a matter of relative risk. it's important to recognize the environment that the studies in europe and asia were done in. the ridership across the world is down, whether it's up to half of what normal ridership is. we don't know what the spread will be like when subways and buses are packed with people. >> we're hearing about more challenges when it comes to schools trying to re-open. a school in indiana saw one student test positive on the first day of classic. a high school in georgia is set to open today, but saw a player on the football team test positive. what are your thoughts on how various school districts are approaching this? >> no matter what we do, there will be a few cases that show up. the key is identifying those cases as soon as possible to isolate and limit the spread. >> our thanks to dr. ravi there. coming up the best way to write an email if you want a response.

sineesnd crche in san mateo county are close canned again. amy hollyfield is live in pacifica with the growing frustration there. good morning, amy. >> reporter: hi, kumasi. yeah, you can no longer work out inside. they could for a couple of weeks here, so it was a bit of a tease. but now they have got to close the indoor gyms. and some like this orange theory fitness are looking to the parking lot and seeing if they can possibly move class outside so they can still keep their business going. hair salons, nail salon, churches, gyms are all required to now shut down indoor operations. some of those businesses like gyms are looking to pivot and move outdoors, but one gym owner in san mateo told us that they are worried that this won't be enough to bring so i suspect that, you know, it will take a year, maybe two yars to get people's mind wrapped around this that they are not afraid anymore.
