it's nice. yeah. all right. i'm into this. mike nicco, what are you into this morning? >> i thought maybe it was all about football for kumasi there with the big shoulders on. i like that. yeah. i'm into wind. you know, a lot of people were talking about it yesterday. let's see what is going on with that wind right now. still 24 miles per hour in concord and 30 in fairfield and the rest of us a little calmer than that usual spots breezy this morning. the mist and drizzle we promised. it is out there and it is measurable in many areas. don't be surprised if you run into it if you have a decent commute or head through some of our higher elevations. that's the explor tatorium came and around 55 to 60 this morning at 7:00. notice temperatures mainly in the 60s and 70s this afternoon. up to 13 degrees cooler than yesterday and this isn't even our coolest day. i'll show you that and more drizzle coming up in the

accuweather seven-day forecast. here's reggie. >> thanks, mike. all this week abc7 news taking a closer look at education and how school districts are handling going back to school. the san jose unified school district says teachers will be required to actually teach from inside the classroom even though no one else will be in that classroom. abc7 news reporter julian glover is live with the details on this one. julian. >> boy, good morning, reggie. a big blow to the 1,600 teachers that teach in the san jose unified school district. they will not be given the option. they will be required to teach from inside their empty classrooms with their students continuing to learn remotely at home. this is the only district within the entire state of california opting for this requirement. the school district and teachers union announced the agreement late monday. now at a recent school board meeting, the district superintendent steven mcmahon

said teachers from teaching inside the classroom will give the faculty working technology and readily available support. the district is being slammed on facebook by current and former educators in the district who are outraged that teachers will be placing themselves in harm's way reporting to the school building daily with lots of other teachers and teachers don't have long to plan either. we know the san jose school district starts next wednesday. eight days from now giving teachers very little time to figure out child care. our news partners "the mercury news" is reporting that teachers will be allowed to bring their school-aged child with them in the classroom so they can learn while their parents teach. reporting live this morning, julian glover, abc7 news. >> julian, thank you. for many bay area families a new school year will look like nothing they've seen before. most districts are opting for distance learning because of the rise of covid-19 cases. teachers tell us this new method

fda commissioner dr. steven hahn says everyone within the trump administration is on the same page when it comes to confronting the covid-19 surges around the country. but dr. hahn is also saying here that once a vaccine candidate is ready for vetting by the fda, it will be science, not politics that will determine if it is safe and effective. here's part of his interview this morning on "good morning america." >> fda has amazing scientists and experts world class with respect to vaccine and other assessments of medical products. we will make that decision based upon the science and the data from the clinical trials that aron. reood news. we will use those data to make the determination. >> dr. hah says the fda can invoke the emergency use authorization. to get a vaccine faster to the american people that has not yet been decided. you can watch more of his interview coming up on "good

rook showing you the san mateo bridge. we are beginning to see traffic pick up there especially for people heading towards the peninsula. looks like around the 5:00 hour this is when we see the traffic in the area. more and more here. we do have a high the chp for t altamont pass and that's what we have going on in traffic this morning. reggie and kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. developing news with you right now. a new round of evacuations due to the largest wildfire in california. the apple fire in riverside county has now scorched nearly 42 square miles and it's 7% contained. a crew from walnut creek is helping on the front lines. investigators say a malfunctioning diesel vehicle started the fire last friday. every life matters to firefighters, even the four-legged kind. a group of orange county firefighters rescued this lost dog after discovering the aussie shepard near the apple fire. the crew says that they tended to the dog and they gave him water and a bite of their sandwich.

ramp. you can see that slow down beginning to build there. at least two lanes are blocked. number seven. the 49ers are back for campguines thghthe won't b any preseason games this year. the 49ers season opener is scheduled for september 13th at levi stadium. more airline job cuts are coming to the bay area. alaska airlines is planning to lay off 652 employees at sfo and its offices in burlingame. these cuts include flight attendants and aircraft technicians. several dozen employees will be cut in san francisco, as well. a heartbreaking story in vallejo. a couple who had been together for 35 years described as lovebirds by their family both died of covid-19 complications within just two weeks of one another. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone spoke with their surviving children. >> it wasn't until he woke up gasping for air that i said,

okay, we've got to take you to the emergency. we can't just treat it at home any longer. >> reporter: ebony hunter is describing her final in-person moments with her dad, keith robinson. a former u.s. postal worker who died due to covid-19 complication. tough, yes, but even tougher since it came just 11 days after her mother and his wife, guwendline worked at the veteran's home of california also died from the virus. keith who was 62 had diabetes. gwendaline had asthma and a blood cancer known as mds. both had been successfully living with those up until covid-19. they say they feel numb over what has happened but describe their parents as lovebirds who were together for 35 years. he called her bright eyes and she called him grisly. >> every weekend they were together. >> they would dress alike.

south bay and near 80 in los gatos. 70 to 74 through the peninsula and cooler in millbrae and near 60 along the coast today and with winds around 20 to 30 miles per hour that is kind of a bite in the air. mid to upper 60s downtown and south san francisco and sausalito 70. 78 to 84 through most of the north bay valleys. along the east bay shore upper 60s for richmond and berkeley and 70 t74 e where and inland 80 at san ramon to 88 in antioch and dzzle a temperatures in the mid 50 to 60. we can get up to another 0.5 to 0.6 tomorrow and that would be about what this august has averaged as far as rain goes. or drizzle. all right. so, temperatures up to ten degrees cooler tomorrow and a lot like today, thursday and then summer is back, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s inland.

last two weeks. the governor says positive covid-19 tests have fallen to 7%. that's down from 7.5% last week. he says we still, though, need to be vigilant saying if we get too confident, we could relive the spike we saw in june and july. when asked about whether schools can reopen soon, whether they should require teachers to go in the classrooms, he said this. >> i don't believe anyone should be forced to put their life and health at risk. period. full stop. and if people feel their lives are being put at risk and their health is being put at risk, it is incumbent upon us to call that out. >> the governor says we will be living with this virus until we get a vaccine saying it will not pea taking off labor day or halloween and we can't either. he says we need to do more of what we have been doing with social distancing, wearing masks

and jobina fortson is tracking that live for us. jobina? >> thank you, reggie. good morning. yes, packing winds of over 80 miles per hour. hurricane isaias made landfall in north carolina overnight and now downgraded to a tropical storm. but as you just mentioned, the effects are far from over, especially inland. isaias arrived in the carolinas about 40 miles northeast of myrtle beach and brought heavy wind and intense rain. evacuations were ordered for folks along the coast. hundreds of thousands are without power and the u.s. national hurricane center has warned people in the area. the storm surge could measure up to over five feet of rain in some spots. north carolina officials say powerful storm is the last thing that they want to deal with right now. they're one of the states dealing with a big increase in covid-19 cases. >> been here 35 years. we've never seen a situation like this where the hospital has
