presidential election. summer is over for thousands of students in the south bay. today is the first day of school in san jose and it will be all virtual for now. san jose, some teachers will be teaching from their empty classrooms. but there has been a last minute change that is allowing some of them to work from home. lauren martinez is live with more on this. >> reporter: as of last night, the district announced that they will give teachers the choice to work from home. this decision came less in an 24 hours before the first day of school. and one teacher said that it is too little too late. his name is paul sawyer. he is a special education teacher at willow glenn high school. and recently he put in for a 12 week leave under the families first coronavirus response act. jose unified school dist anunced that its teachers mustc.

more concerns have emerged about tiktok after a "wall street journal" investigation and amid calls to ban the app by the trump administration. the "journal" discovered tiktok's app improperly collected mac addresses of users for 18 months. those addresses serve as unique identifier of each device. both google's play store and apple's app store have banned the collection of mac addresses. tiktok discontinued the practice last november after facing mounting political pressure from the u.s. there is only one blockbuster store left and now it is listed on airbnb. it is located in bend, oregon and now could be a vacation rental. movie lovers can book a night for just $4 on either september 18th, 1'9" 9th or the 20th. this is in honor of their 20th anniversary. the listing says that the bookings open monday, but there

announcement. >> reporter: plenty of reaction this morning. president trump has already tweeted this morning about kamala harris. we're also hearing a lot of reaction here in san francisco where she got her political start. she was elected here in 2003 to become the district attorney of san francisco. she also served as the state's attorney general. now, critics say harris didn't do enough in these positions when it came to investigating police shootings of people of color. but some of those critics say they are now willing to join her supporters in backing her on the biden presidential ticket. her supporters are very excited about the choice. >> i've seen her grow and develop over the years, but also taking that same approach of trying to mentor young women, trying to lift up other people. >> what is unfortunate is that once again black people are in a position where we have toss o t clearly the lesser of those two evils are biden and kamala

didn't see a pattern in the backlog of nearly 300,000 covid-19 tests. he also wouldn't go into specifics as to why dr. sonia angell resigned as director of the department of public health. we'll bring you his update live at noon. frl . contra costa county health officials say two new testing centers should be up and running this week. the new testing centers will be at the county's north richmond center and at the richmond civic center. they are also providing additional equipment to make sure that they get the test results in one to two days and they are also looking the test samples. and as there have been long delays in gre emerging this morning about the safety of allowing schools to hold classes in person. and this comes as covid-19 cases have spiked in one georgia

it is up in the higher elevations. right near lakeview road is where it happened. so very sparsely populated area thankfully. and we get about 10,000 magnitude 4s per year, so not unusual. but it is one of the bigger ones we've had in that area in a while. and let's take a look at what is going on the next seven days. upper 80s to mid-90s. and starting tomorrow and going through next wednesday, that is how long the heat wave i think will last. average highs are right around 79. and east bay valleys, average high 87, but look at the strings of 100 degree days. we'll have much calmer conditions on the peninsula. temperatures in the low to mid-90s friday and saturday and sunday. and overalong the east bay, we'll have near 90 friday and saturday. and then we'll get back into the

>> reporter: the district said that they had to work under a tight time line to support everyone's needs. lauren martinez, abc 7 news.new. researchers at stanford believe there is a strong correlation between testing positive for covid-19 and young who either vape or smoke. a survey looked at more than 4300. and it examined tobacco users and those who don't smoke or vape at all. those who used ecigarettes were five times more likely to test positive for doifcovid-19. and that increased to seven times greater if they use ecigarettes or regular cigarettes. >> and there is some question of whether maybe there is coronavirus that the virus itself is being carried in that big plume of aerosol that you
