but we need a way to stay cool the next several days. from noon tomorrow through 9:00 p.m. sunday, an excessive heat watch. and here is a quick look at what to expect today and what you will notice the lack of clouds first of all from t at these temperatures, already 80 to 90 away from the coast at noon and mid to upper 80s to near 100 at 4:00 and still 70s and mainly 80s at 7:00. and temperatures won't cool off overnight. i'll explain why coming up. and developing news in berkeley, roads are still closed because of several water main breaks. possible overpressurizing may have called 11 lines to street. streets are still closed because

of the damage. east bay has crews at several locations and has been making road repairs all night. so here is just a few of the trouble spots. there is closure at edward street and dwight way because of road damage. and in emeryville, several blocks of hollis street are shut down. and today a court hearing could lead to uber and lyft temporarily shutting down in california. a bay area judge says a san francisco based company has to figure their drivers full-time employees and both companies are fighting back. lauren martinez is joining us from uber's headquaters. >> reporter: today they are heading to court on the issue. earlier this week, a judge ruled against rideshare companies to drivers as full time employees. some believe the threat to shut

pleasant hill is 59, so a little milder, but a lot of low to mid-60s out there and they will only get warmer from here on out. compare that to what is going on in the north bay, look at that, 49 in santa rosa, 50 in novato thanks to clear conditions. upper 50s to low 60s around the rest of the bay. so the east bay is already showing signs of the warming trend. let's take a look at the peninsula. if you don't have air conditioning today, try to get all that cool air into the house this morning. we'll hit the mid to upper 80s for several hours this afternoon. 75 as you head towards 8:00. for the east bay, we're at 65 this morning and then low to mid-80s this afternoon. and those clouds you see, those aren't low clouds and that is not the marine layer coming in to save the day, those are high clouds and the humidity will make it even warmer tonight. and for san francisco, we'll hit the low to mid-70s for several hours, but some 80s are in the forecast as quickly as tomorrow.

watching right now. those warmer overnight temperatures, that will be a real detriment to cooling off and that is why this will be possibly a very dangerous event. here is a look at that moisture comi you see thunderstorms out over the ocean. that is where the best chance for thunderstorms remains. hopefully we get some of that beneficial rain without the dry lightning that could spark fires. right now the threat is so low, we don't have a red flag warning, but that is something else we're watching. check out the numbers, 87 in cupertino, that is as cool as it gets in the south bay. 77 in millbrae and mid upper to 80s on the peninsula. look at the upper 60s along the coast, mid-70s downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. 89 in vallejo, 88 napa. barely intorimo oakland, everyb else low to mid-80s. and 95 to 101 in our east bay valleys. look at these temperatures, more

right now let's give you what we know for sure. it will get hot and a little humid and that is why we have the excessive heat watch and you can see it was expanded through more of the santa clara valley. noon tomorrow through 9:00 sunday, that is when the temperatures will be the warmest. 95 to 108. and the north bay was included. and here is one of the reasons why. look at this, no cloud cover this morning. no drizzle, no marine layer except for right near the coast. and as we head into the afternoon hours, we'll have some high clouds roll in, that is the humidity that will make it very warm tonight and lead to tomorrow's temperatures that will be even warmer than this which is 72 at san francisco to triple digits around fairfield and antioch. at the live desk i'm following a fast spreading wildfire in the angeles forest. and in southern california, it is continuing to threaten homes

and force evacuations this morning. the lake fire is at 0% containment right now. crews expected that number to change overnight, but they have not given an update so far. originally an evacuation shelter was not established because of covid-19. evacuees were told to stay in their cars. but overnight, a shelter was opened. it started north of santiaa clari clarita. the sheriffs department says the remote location and terrain is making ground efforts difficult. >> so there is a tremendous amount of fuel loading on those slopes and again with the remoteness and the terrain, it will be really challenging. arenin the sitti eve increbl vee received. there are more than 500 firefighters out there right now working to get this all under control. they are coming in from agencies across the state and outside of

california. it is back to school in contra costa county. a lot of districts start the new year with distance learning today as more classes resume around the bay area, education and keeping our kids safe is taking on a much bigger role as we build a better bay area. amy hollyfield is live with more on this. >> reporter: yeah, distance learning and getting it all figured out has been such a challenge that here in la fayette, they are starting schools two days later than originally planned. they took two teacher workdays scheduled for later this year, they bumped them up to this week so teachers could have more time to get ready for scadistance learning. distance learning is starting today in san ramon valley, orinda and la fayette. those districts have been sending out emails and tweets about how this will be different but they will get through it together. and administrators say this experience should be an improvement from the online learning that happened in the spring and that students will be

in a virtual school online 8:00 to 2:00 every day. >> in a given class period, we expect 50% to 60% of that time would be the teacher directly talking to the kids, instructing them, working with the kids. the rest of that time while kids are in class, maybe independent learning, group learning, one to one time. >> reporter: they do plan to adjust the online time based on age saying older kids will be in front of a screen longer than the younger wiggly ones. they know this is not ideal, but everyone is doing the best they can. and they will not be penalized for any technical issues. for everyone to just stay calm and be patient as they try to work it out. and they are expecting the first day to be a bit hectic as they work out all the new details. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. the school year is under way

for 30,000 students and teachers in the south bay. san jose unified school district returned to school yesterday. 10,000 chrome books and ipads had to be distributed ahead of time for distance learning. however there were a few glitches getting students signed on. >> i think that it is again the first day jitters and i think we're all excited but we're all nervous and we know that it will be a big learning curve for all of us. >> san jose unified says it spent around $3 million for professional staff to teach online and to provide social and emotional support. close to $5 million has pain invested chrome books and hot spots. that cost was absorbed by the district. and governor newsom is k3resing hok3res i %-po frustration. here is dan ashley. >> we are turning the corner on

and east bay where the 60s where more dominant. so we have a lack of clouds meaning a cooler morning for many area, but you can see the warmth creeping in from the south as the east bay is already showing signs of that with warmer tempertures this morning. look at the lack of clouds at the bay bridge toll plaza. no drizzle to worry about this morning for your commute and no choppiness on the water. no small craft advisory. so let's jump into the numbers. south bay, 86 at noon, low 90s for a couple hours this afternoon. and increasing high clouds and 79 at 8:00. a look at the north bay, from 62 this morning to 86 at noon, low to mid-90s for several hours this afternoon. still 81 with high clouds at 8:00. and we'll see increasing high clouds in the east bay also with temperatures breaking into the 90s by noon. upper 90s for several hours this afternoon. and still a warm 86 at 8:00. and those high clouds, that is

breaking news at the live desk, the u.s. labor department just released the latest weekly jobless claims and we're looking at these numbers and you may notice a big difference this morning, 936,000 unemployment claims were filed last week, slightly lower than the forecast, but that snaps a 20 week streak of new claims totaling more than 1 million. 56 million claims have now been filed since march 20th report when the country shut down because of the covid-19 pandemic. more than 15.4 million people are still continuing their claims just below projections. we'll see how investors react to all this when the markets open up in about 45 minutes. governor newsom says the state is pushing the federal government to pay for the unemployment funding that president trump has promised. the state is also working toward getting financial aid for businesses. >> the most urgent economic
