a planned shut off next week, but could you lose power anyway. >> equipment just doesn't have enough time to cool down when it is that hot for that amount of time. the equipment can't cool down and that is what causes power outages. and thousands of homes are still under threat from the lake fire burning in southern california. this is in lake hughes just north of l.a. and so far 11,000 acres have burned and it is only 5% contained. it started wednesday afternoon and just exploded in size burning parts of the forest that haven't seen a fire since 1968. scattered thunderstorms yesterday helped a little bit, but that could change because they are expecting that triple digit heat over the next few days. you can stay on top of the weather anytime with our abc news app. and it is free to download.

possible shutdown. both have been ordered to classify their drivers as full-time workers. yesterday a judge denied their request to extend the deadline. fighters who have been fighting to unionize for years say they are not biting the shutdown threat, but some don't want to be full-time employees and say their livelihoods would be devastated if a shutdown actually happened. >> people are trying to work and people need resources, they need to get to doctor's appointments and we're telling them that this is potentially going to be shut down. >> both companies say they will file another request for an extension with the court of appeals immediately. coronavirus vaccine, talk about their experience, some of the highs and lows.

and a few of the storms went stray over land and that is what we're seeing. and that is what we'll continue to see through the morning hours. we have our best chance of any sprinkles to thunderstorms this morning. and then you can see increasing sunshine. we'll start with the three hottest microclimates. today record warm lows are possible, look at that, 74 at 7:00 -- or 8:00 i should say in the south bay. you are 92 at nine, upper 90s for most of the afternoon. mid-90s at 6:00. and look at that, still 87 at 8:00. we'll start off with clouds up in the north bay, all the way through noon where we reach 94, but look at the string of 100s this afternoon. and still 91 at 8:00. and east bay valleys, we're in the 100s through you you at lea 7:00. and you think this morning is

warm, tonight going to be almost as warm. i'll show you that coming up. good morning, everyone. so in traffic this morning, i've been following a deadly crash in san jose. this is a look at the scene from earlier this morning. one person died there unfortunately. there were several vehicles involved in the crash. it happened around 1:30 this morning. the sigalert was canceled at 4:12, so now all lanes are open and that is the positive update. this is northbound 85 just before the camden avenue off-ramp. again, all lanes are open. and right here now, there is a pretty clear commute. so i'll show you the 880 at the coliseum. you can see the situation. those headlights making their way south this morning. of course i'll let you know if anything changes. investigators are looking into what caused two fires in danville. flames raced through the garage

of the home at the end of willow view court yesterday afternoon. and then a few minutes after that, a two acre grass fire broke out nearby. sky 7 shows you how close they were. firefighters were able to put both out in just under an hour. the state's moratorium on evictions will soon come to an end unless lawmakers take action. lawmakers have about 2 1/2 weeks to come up with a plan. assemblyman david chiu wants to extend the moratorium until the state of emergency ends or april 1st of next year, whichever comes first. and in the south bay, cupertino is about to launch a unique way to offer rent help. it partnered with a startup to provide 25 residents with interest-free loans. the program will pay out $2,000 over a four month period with repayment expected when that renter is back working.

injected with the experimental vaccine. neal was second in line for the phase one trial which took place in the seattle area. moderna tested three doses of the vaccine, each participant got two injections one month apart. ian received ten times higher and this jennifer and neal's. >> all i had was a little bit of arm pain where write got the shot. but after the second injection, i did have some more issues. for about 24 hours, i had a fever and a med and i cheadache. and a couple days later, it became clear that i had too much of an immune reaction to that high dose. >> reporter: ian says because of the side effects that he and a few others experienced, moderna is no longer testing that 250 micro gram strength. moderna chose to move forward with the 100 micro gram dose.

and judy stokes is ian's mom inspired by her son, she signed up for moderna's phase three trial. >> i really wasn't sure if they would want me. i'm 68 and i have heart disease and high blood pressure. but it turns out that is exactly who they wanted, they wanted a diverse group of people and those who were vulnerable to the virus. >> reporter: she got her first injection last week and does not know if she received the vaccine or a placebo. would you do it again if you could? >> absolutely. >> yes. >> i feel hopeful. this one or another one, i feel hopeful. >> reporter: kate larsen, abc 7 news. all this week, abc 7 news has been featuring a special series of stories and guest interviews exploring the way the bay area is taking part in developing and testing a

possible coronavirus vaccine. you can catch it on abc news, you are our app and website. a 14-year-old girl in san jose is making it her mission to help senior are dogs find a forever home kind of like she did when she was adapted. mena has received a total of $14,000 to help putville senior dog rescue. she herself was adopted from india. her parents say she's always had a love for animals and decided she wanted to help the dogs find homes. she came up with a plan to take care of animals around her neighborhood and donate the money she earned to muttville. >> for dog sit thing, walking, dog board, pretty much everything. i thought this would be a way that i could spend time with dogs and also help muttville. >> muttville says with the thousands that she's raised,

morning, record hot highs this afternoon, we could have the potential for poor air quality in the east bay and south bay. dangerous heat well into next week, so let's take a look at what is happening today. look for the asterisks, that is a record high. 98 in san jose, triple digits morgan hill, gilroy. record high 97 in redwood city. 87 in millbrae. look at the upper 70s along the coast. 86 in downtown san francisco, ties a record high. 101 in santa rosa, 97 in san rafael. record high 91 today in oakland. and as we move into the east bay valleys, nobody wants to see a record high of 107, but that's what you will have in concord. tonight 60s once again, 70s and 80s up in our hills. a quick look at future radar, and you see the best chance the models are still showing through the morning and the early afternoon hours across the

coast. a few of those may slip into our neighborhoods, but that would be the exception. so let's look at the 7 day forecast, look at that, 80s and 90s around the bay. 100s inland. we'll start to see some 60s by the coast. and there are also some new privacy concerns when it comes to amazon's signature smart device. and you can no longer download fortnite from the apple and google app stores. >> in today's tick bites, fortnite takes aim at apple and google. epic games has filed antitrust charges against both companies. they had kicked fortnight otherwiout of their app stores. a cybersecurity firm claims hackers could have used a link to access a user's voice history or their personal information. but amazon says it is not aware of any information being

let's take a look at what is going on. today is likely our hottest day, but tomorrow will also be warm. we'll still have 80s and 90s around the bay and 90s and 100s inland. and then it spills into sunday. but monday also. this is one of the longest and strongest heat waves we've dealt with in a long time. so each and every day your body will get weaker and weaker if you have to work outside in this, so make sure you listen to it. moderate risk of heat illness around the bay, high risk inland for the next several days.

stanford is scrapping plans to allow some undergraduates to live on campus. university is also canceling almost all in-person classes because of the pandemic. in a letter the university president wrote that we will not be able to invite first year, sophomore and new transfers to be in-residence for the autumn quarter as we had hoped. incoming freshmen we spoke with were upset but not surprised. >> i think we're all kind of getting used to being let down and knowing that we'll miss out on a lot of stuff that would normally be in person. >> students as well as those with special circumstances have been approved to return to campus. happening today, the as and giants will kick off the first game of the bay bridge series at oracle park. oakland heads to san francisco in first place in the a.l. west while the giants return from a ten game road trip in last place in the nl west. first pitch at 6:45 p.m. the as and giants squared off

just before the season opened. and they will meet again in oakland next month. oracle park food service workers are planning to picket prior to the game. and also stage a car caravan. the chronicle reports that the union representing the would ems has requested that the giants join labor negotiations between the union and bon appetit which is the subcontractor. but the giants denied that request. union workers would also like more financial aid from the giants who gave each worker $500 at the beginning of the shutdown. the protest tonight starts at 6:00 p.m. for the first time in bachelorette history, chris harrison is brief live handing over hosting duties because he is under quarantine after taking his son to college in texas. he is expected to return for the final episodes of the season,
