warmer than yesterday. so let's see where we have end this afternoon. we had a couple records yesterday in oakland, redwood city, and they will set record highs again today and also san jose at 98, concord at 107, 97 in san rafael, 101 in santa rosa. and i left the best one for last, or maybe the least, 86 record high in san francisco today. and we know the heat is going to complicate life that is already complicated during the pandemic. because businesses are struggling to stay afloat and also all of us are told to go outside, do some exercise, dine outdoors, do business curbside. but when it is this hot and you have to put on a mask, that gets kind of challenging. >> now here we add not only the covid, but now we've got heat on top of the problems we already had. so yeah, just another hit businesses are taking down here. >> the veterinarian hospital in

walnut creek is taking the heat very seriously. they have done curbside vet service with drgs and owners waiting in their care, but they have decided that today they are not doing that, they will be closing in the afternoon. spare the air alert is in effect today. air quality is supposed to be pretty bad from the heat and car pollution. >> when temperatures do increase, we want to make sure that we're taking that preventive measure and letting people know that we are expecting an increase in ozone levels and we're calling a spare the air day because of that. >> so here is the advice. avoid driving if you can. and if you are trying to exercise, try to do in the morning. this is the third spare the air alert issued for smog this year which is fewer than usual because a lot of people have been staying home during the pandemic. at the live desk, extreme heat is expected to make conditions worse for crews that are battling the lake fire in southern california right now. the fire has burned more than

11,000 acres with 5% containment. officials say triple digit heat and low humidity will create dangerous and erratic conditions. they warn that thousands of homes and businesses are being threatened, at least three buildings have already been destroyed. >> the neighbor's house was already engulfed when i left. >> there are over 1,000 firefighters working the lake fire. officials say that the rugged terrain in the area with drought stricken fuels are making it hard to contain right now. the new school year is fast approaching for a lot of parents right now and parents are concerned about what that will look like will that and today san francisco unified will give an update on what distance learning will be for kids in the city. education of course one of the five areas we're focused on as we look at ways to build a better bay area. and lauren martinez is joining us live from the district headquarters in san francisco this morning. >> reporter: and the supervisors

will host a public hearing along with the district and department of public health to update parents on what they should expect this upcoming year. san francisco unified now requires new educators must go through a program to help them teach from a distance. public schoolteachers have agreed to teach a minimum of two hours of live instruction per day, but they have the option of extending that time. we spoke to cody who teaches in san francisco, it is his first year and he is one of 74 new teachers who received extensive training online to get certified. >> the online courses were seven weeks long through the summer and, you know, we went at it from 9:00 a.m. until, you know, 3:00 p.m. and it helped me, you know, shift changes from what it is like to go into a physical classroom to go into a distance learning classroom.

>> reporter: the public hearing is at 10:00 this morning. 54,000 students are expected to return to class on monday. from san francisco, lauren martinez, abc 7 news. so that is what will happen in san francisco. and we already know what happened in san jose when they reopened on wednesday. and now we're looking at the numbers of how many students actually showed up for virtual learning. district officials report that 93% of students were there connecting online with teachers and their classmates. but now look closer. officials say the most vulnerable students had the highest rate of absence. schools with a high percentage of students from low income families had attendance rates as low as 6 7%. and schools in higher income areas, they had attendance as high as 99%. as most bay area kids now start the school year online, three counties are trying to get students back on campus.

the "chronicle" reports marin county will start distributing waiver applications. last week santa clara and sonoma counties put their wavering process online. they have to be approved by the county and state health officials. the state requires schools to have support of parents, labor unions and community groups. we dedicated an entire week to education. and all those stories are available at abc7news.com and on our connected tv apps. happening today, governor newsom will have an update on the state's response to the covid-19 pandemic at noon. it has been a month since newsom ordered counties to roll back their reopening plans and began adding more counties to the growing watch list. despite all of that, california just became the first state in the nation to exceed 600,000 positive cases. the number of hospitalized patients though continues to drop, about 5200 people are currently in the hospital. >> hospitalizations are actually

down in all nine counties in the bay area. and that is ranging from about 16%, 17% in san francisco to more than 30% in places like san mateo. so that is good news. >> and other news though, california is still seeing over 100 deaths every day. now to president trump's bold admission that he wants to block new funding for the u.s. post office because of mail-in voting. joe biden says this is an attempt to discredit the election. ines de la cuetara is in washington with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. neither the postal union nor the post master believes processing that expected surge in mail-in ballots will be an issue, but president trump insisted otherwise. as the debate over how to hold a safe election during the pandemic continues, president trump now telling fox news he wants to block billions of dollars from the u.s. post office to try to prevents democrats from expanding mail-in voting during the pandemic. >> if we don't make a deal, that means they don't get the money

william barr may reveal som somm those today. ines de la cuetara, abc news, washington. we're having fun issues after a power outage last night, but i think that we're getting everything back together. let's take a look at what is going on with our radar. live doppler 7, you can see right there is a few sprinkles possible near half moon bay and even around san francisco. and that is the threat of showers today. even some thunderstorms possible. we don't see any lightning right now out of this system. the best chances we talked about yesterday will be over te ocean with a few stray showers roaming our way especially during the morning hours. and that looks to be the case and that is what future radar will show you, the green mainly over the ocean through the 9:00 hour and then there is one spike of energy that rolls through right around the midday and you can see right there, a slight better chance of some showers.

and then we'll see increasing sunshine which is the last thing we need for today. here is a look at the excessive heat warning, all those areas in red until sunday at 9:00. and that includes the east bay and south bay where we could warm up to 108 in some areas. here is a look at the peninsula, mid-90s this afternoon. 84 still at 8:00. look at the east bay, 86 at noon, low to mid-90s from 1:00 to 6:00. still 81 at 8:00. and for san francisco, look at that, low to mid-80s today. in fact record high of 86 likely in downtown san francisco. we'll talk more about this hot weekend coming up. let's get back to you guys. so checking in on traffic here, unfortunately, we did have a problem spot in san jose that cleared just before 4:15 this morning. a deadly crash there on northbound 85. that has moved out of the way

and overall the bay area is clear now. so we'll take a live look in emeryville showing you the camera there, headlights making their way west. the metering lights came on a little earlier yesterday though that was due to an issue on the bay bridge. so i'll continue to watch those lights. checking in on the maps, you can see we don't have a lot of slow spots. just are coming out of tracy that is smaller than usual. tracy to dublin, 29 minute ride. and antioch to concord, 13 minutes. and san rafael to san francisco, a 16 minute ride. also this morning b.a.r.t. is testing new filters and all take violet lights in the ventilation systems that might trap and kill the coronavirus. the transit agency share this had video of crews installing the filters on the underside of a rail car. transit officials have laid out a 15 step plan describing actions b.a.r.t. is taking to ensure the health and safety of riders.

here are 7 things to know this morning. and number one, the heat. dangerous heat, the risk of heat illness soaring to high levels today as we reach possibly 110 across parts of the north bay. and the excessive heat warning also spills in to the east bay and south bay. 95 to 108. and that is not only today, but possible tomorrow and sunday. and i wouldn't be surprised if this is extended we would ll in week. and the heat will make it harder for businesses already struggling because of the pandemic. some in the east bay have put up shades to help keep people cool.

and san francisco unified school district officials will give an update later this morning to parents on what distance learning will look like. school starts on monday. number four, governor newsom will be giving another update on the state's response to the pandemic. he can watch it live at noon right here on abc 7 as well as our news app and abc7news.com. and lyft is alerting its customers about a possible shutdown. uber and lyft have been ordered to classify their drivers as full-time workers by next thursday. yesterday a judge denied their request to extend the deadline. number six, i have some positive news in traffic at least. things are looking clear across the bay area. as we take a look in walnut creek, it is pretty light for a friday. and the as and giants kick off the first game of the bay bridge series today. the first pitch is at 6:45.

after more than five weeks, a 10-year-old girl is back with her family this morning. that girl was stuck in the middle east alone due to unexplained visa issues. kate larsen was there for this emotional reunion. can. >> reporter: raghad saleh has been stranded unr til now.now. the 10-year-old is now home. >> she's so happy she is i nighted winight united with us. >> reporter: her visa finally came through. >> he is so happy, it is a moment of his life that he would never forget. >> reporter: raghad was stuck in egypt unable to immigrate with her family after her father fled yemen. five weeks ago, raghad's visa

officer who saved a man in the path of and on coming train. it is still hard to watch this video. the 15 second clip from her body camera has gone viral. she spot theed this man, he was struggling to free his wheelchair. and she pulled him off the tracks right before impact. >> it just came down to someone needed help and you go out and help them. everyone in the department would have done the same thing. >> the man's legs were badly injured, but he is still alive. and the department spokesperson says the outcome would have been much different had it not been for that attentive officer. >> so thankful for her. so wait until you see this. little kids can now join their parents who are working from

hills. record warm lows and highs today. that just is so unusual and so mind blowing. and it is a spare the air day. dangerous heat well into next week so our heat illness risk will remain high for several days. the heat advisory does not include san francisco and it does not include the coast, but it includes all those other areas that were not in the excessive heat warning. so let's talk about numbers. 94 in sunnyvale, 105 in 94 in santa cruz. 97 redwood city. look at the upper 70s along the coast and record setting mid-80s around downtown, south san francisco, sausalito. upper 90s to low 100s in the north bay, 97 at san rafael, 87 at richmond, 89 in berkeley. low to mid-90s along the east way shore. and 104 to 108, sadly it will be just as warm if not warmer tonight. 60s, 70s and even some 80s up in

our hills. the que accuweather 7 day forecast, we're still in the 70s at the coast, 90s and 100s inland just about every day. and in "first look," a surfer who fought off a great white shark is sharing his survival story and the decision he made that may have made the difference. here is matt gutman. >> in this morning's "gma first look," the surfer who fought off a shark with his bare hands and his board telling his story. >> massive shocks seeing that right in front of me. >> reporter: phil was surfing in western australia when a 16 foot shark chomped through his board and into part of his leg knocking him into the water. >> i grabbed the board and was just shoving it into its mouth just trying to hold it in there. figured if he was biting on the board, he wasn't biting on me.

temperature in san francisco. we have some record lows developing right now. look at that 75 in livermore. these are record warm low temperatures, 74 in san jose, 72 in concord, 70 in oakland. those would be record warm low temperatures. we're up to 16 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. so that tough sleeping weather will be back again tonight. and look at the record high temperatures this afternoon. 98 san jose, 97 in redwood city, 91 oakland.nd.nd. 97 in san rafael. we know that lot of people are already stuck at home during the pandemic. and on top of working at home and dealing with distance learning for your kids, now you will have to be looking for other ways to stay cool. a amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with more. >> reporter: good morning.

yeah, we're watching the temperature here in walnut creek, already in the 70s and the sun isn't even up yet. it is supposed to get over 100 degrees in several parts of the east bay today. so it will be extremely the hot, so be careful. officials say this is setting up as a double threat to health. they are worried of course about people overheating, but they are also concerned about people congregating in parks and beaches and for getting to socially distance and spreading the coronavirus. the advice is to stay inside, avoid outdoor activities that could cause you to overheat and to stay 6 feet apart. we talked to people about their reaction to this expected heat. >> i don't like this weather. i prefer the winter. i've always preferred the winter g . >> certainly not wonderful, but we'll make it work. >> i work from home and i get to be in all day, save some money and stay cool. >> mine it is what it is, but i wish it was cooler.

>> reporter: cooling centers will be open, but socially distancing will be enforced. so they aren't sure what to expect in terms of nulls and if they will have to turn people away. when you are outside and you are near people and it is very hot, it could be tempting to take your mask off. officials say don't do that, the virus isn't taking a break, so you have to keep your mask on when you are out and around people. so keep that in mind. maybe just stay indoor, drink a lot of water, take it easy. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. the state's power grid operator has issued a flex alert for today. the flex alert says that you need to conserve energy as much as possible between 3:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. today. pg&e is preparing for public safety power shutoffs in the event of dangerous weather conditions that could spark wildfires. a rep says that there will the

abc7news.com and also on facebook. the cdc has released a new forecast, it is r5predicting upo $200,000 deaths in the u.s. by labor day. and this is as parents and teachers get new guidance on how they can best keep their families safe. andrea fujii has the latest. >> reporter: and although fewer states are reporting increasing cases, 17 states are seeing an increase in hospitalizations and 21 states plus d.c. and puerto rico are seeing more daily deaths. this as many schools are still struggling with the task of bringing students back. dr. anthony fauci advising on the best way to reopen. >> you are in a red zone, i think that you really better be careful and try to get your county, your city, your state

down to a yellow or green. >> reporter: fauci also interviewed by maths new mcc mcmatthew mcconaughey. >> you want to open the bars or open the schools? >> reporter: in tampa, area schools now forced by the state to open or risk losing millions in federal funds. but for some schools that have already reopened, at least 2400 students and staff quarantined across at least six states. in mesa, personal protective equipment is being stored. >> we've been ordering all summer. >> reporter: and the american academy of pediatrics now recommending all children older than two wear masks. saying face coverings should be part of their new normal like seats belts or bike helmets. researchers say with fall approaching, the virus could spread fast in chicago, boston and baltimore. >> they only have weeks left before the nights get colder. and the transmissions may

worsen. >> reporter: and also forcing school sports to make big adjustment. ncaa announcing there won't be any fall championships this year because there aren't enough schools participating. andrea fujii, abc news, new york. at the live desk, we are a step closer to being without uber or lyft at least for a little while. what we're learning this morning is that lyft is alerting customers to all of this. in an email, they say there is a possible shutdown. both have been ordered to classify their drivers as full-time workers. yesterday a judge denied their request to extend the deadline. drivers who have been fighting to unionize for years say that they are not buying the shutdown threat, but not all feel the same way. some don't want to be full-time employees and say that their livelihoods would be devastated if a shutdown actually happened. >> people are trying to work and people need resources, they need to get to doctor's appointments

they shouldn't walk on it with their paws either. look at this, i'm trying see if this is making it to the ground, but so far nothing measurable. but you can see that there is a possibility of a few sprinkles this morning. so far in lightning with these storms. and as we talked about yesterday, the best chance is out over the ocean. but a chance of seeing those showers dissipate and head a little further to the west. now, by noon, look at that, one little spoke of energy will push the chance of a thunderstorm inland and then by the afternoon hour, we'll have increasing sunshine this means that it will be even hotter and brighter today than it was yesterday. south bay already 92 by noon, upper 90s through 4:00. still 86 at 8:00.

developed by massachusetts based company moderna and the federal government. on march 16th, jennifer was the first person in the u.s. to get injected with the experimental vaccine. neal was second in line for the phase one trial which took place in the seattle area. moderna tested three doses of the vaccine, each participant got two injections one month apart. ian received ten times higher and this jennifer and neal's. >> all i had was a little bit of arm pain where write got the shot. but after the second injection, i did have some more issues. for about 24 hours, i had a fever and headache, some nausea. and a couple days later, it became clear that i had too much of an immune reaction to that high dose. >> reporter: ian says because of the side effects that he and a few others experienced, moderna is no longer testing that 250 micro gram strength. moderna chose to move forward with the 100 micro gram dose.

all this week, abc 7 news has been featuring a special series of stories and guest interviews exploring the way the bay area is taking part in developing and testing a possible coronavirus vaccine. you can catch it on abc news, you are our app and website. a 14-year-old girl in san jose is making it her mission to help senior dogs find a forever home kind of like she did when she was adapted. mena has received a total of $14,000 to help muttville senior dog rescue. she herself was adopted from india. her parents say she's always had a love for animals and decided she wanted to help the dogs find homes. she came up with a plan to take care of animals around her neighborhood and donate the money she earned to muttville. >> for dog sitting, walking, dog board, pretty much everything. i thought this would be a way that i could spend time with dogs and also help muttville.
