nurse anesthetist and mom of two and learning how she dropped 65 pounds during quarantine. major morning motivation coming up right here. >> yeah, i know i need to see that as well. but first the u.s. postal service, the motivation -- >> you look great, by the way. you don't need to see that. >> positive motivation is always good, right? the u.s. postal service sounding the alarm with a dire election warning, the agency telling more than 20 states that mail-in ballots might not be returned soon enough to be counted. >> and this as more than 21 million people have now been diagnosed with covid-19 worldwide. here in the u.s., the number of hospitalized patients is falling but the number of daily deaths is up. 1,204 coronavirus-related deaths have been reported in the united states in the last 24 hours. the fda issuing new guidelines now warning against the reliance on rapid tests. abc's trevor ault is at a bronx testing facility with the latest. trevor, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. so here in the u.s. cases are

down, but as whit said, deaths are up, and still several months into this pandemic, some testing sites simply cannot keep up with the sheer volume of people who are trying to get tested. this morning, the onslaught of new covid-19 cases is slowing slightly but still slamming several areas. >> we just can't hire enough people fast enough to keep up with the demand. >> reporter: testing delays continue to be a rampant problem. in rhode island patients like tressie seymour are waiting as much as ten hours for a test. >> now it's going on almost seven hours that i've been in my car waiting to get tested for a rapid test. >> reporter: health officials and medical workers are learning more about the virus every day. new guidelines from the cdc say patients who have recovered from covid-19 don't need to quarantine or get retested for up to three months. as some schools and colleges return, the university of north carolina has reported clusters of at least five positive cases in two different residence

halls while the florida high school athletic association has voted to allow its schools to start fall sports later this month against the recommendations from medical experts. florida teacher william adams decided to retire at 52 instead of returning to his classroom. he says with diabetes and multiple health issues, he couldn't take the risk. >> it was one of the most difficult decisions i've had to make in my life. >> reporter: and here in new york city we're taking more steps towards re-opening. indoor dining is still banned, but museums and cultural centers are cleared to re-open later this month, and the state is expected to release guidance for gyms re-opening on monday. whit. >> and all of that because the infection rate remains low in the new york city area. thank you so much, trevor. we appreciate it. now to those concerns from the u.s. postal service about mail-in voting and whether it can handle the potential demand in the presidential election. abc's rachel scott is in bedminster, new jersey, where the president is spending the weekend. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: whit, good morning.

yes, and those concerns coming just 80 days out from election day, the u.s. postal service sounding the alarm that some mail-in ballots might not be delivered or returned in enough time to be counted, firing off a warning letter to more than 20 states in critical battlegrounds like pennsylvania and michigan, voters are able to request voters are able to request their absentee ballots a few days out but the postal service calling those state deadlines too tight and it comes as the president launched a campaign against mail-in voting pushing forward baseless and unfounded claims that it leads to voter fraud and even threatening to withhold funding from the u.s. postal service until democrats meet his demands on a coronavirus relief package. overnight former president barack obama had some strong words for the trump administration saying they are more concerned with suppressing the vote than suppressing the virus, but, guys, this is a dire warning as more and more states expand their mail-in voting efforts ahead of the pandemic. guys. >> a huge issue with something like 80 days left before the election.

aguilera but also images of the disney princess herself. of course, this is the second time the singer is lending her voice to "mulan." her recording of "reflection" for the 1998 animated movie was a breakout hit, so no surprise she's back saying on instagram, quote, a very nostalgic and special moment seeing as this started it all for me leading to a record deal and the rest of my career to follow. "mulan" premieres as a premium offering on disney plus on september 4th. i called her a pop icon in "pop news" because i think of myself as a pop icon. >> "pop news" icon. >> exactly. finally, dennis quaid has a new addition to his family, named dennis quaid. yeah, so the actor has adopted a black rescue cat called dennis quaid. dan, this is right up your alley. >> nice. >> dennis the human heard his 6-year-old namesake was at the lynchburg humane society in virginia and in need of a forever home reaching out to the

as "the new york times" reported. one mom came up with a solution and stephanie ramos has much more on that. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: dan, good morning. learning pods are becoming more popular now that many schools are shifting to online instruction because of covid-19, but not every family can afford it. one mom in pennsylvania says she is determined to get her kids the school help they need without having to quit her job again. when shy rodriguez chose virtual learning for her kids this fall, she knew she would need extra help. in the spring the single mom of two had to quit her job to help her kids with school. >> finding a balance without a support system seems pretty impossible. >> reporter: but learning pods where a small group of parents chip in and hire a teacher would be too pricey for rodriguez, running from $30 to $100 an hour. so rodriguez came up with a more affordable idea, kind of like a modern-day baby-sitting club. she calls it child-pooling.

a pod of about four families take turns having online school at their home so parents can go to work most days. so far she has two families that are interested. >> being a low-income parent, a single parent, it's not something that you have to set aside money for or, you know, worry about a bill at the end of the week or the month, and taking that stress out, that's like a big deal. >> reporter: learning pods have become an obsession among many parents of means, but experts say, as more parents scramble to hire at-home tutors for children, there is a widening gap among those who can and cannot afford the extra help. for those not in learning pods, there are ways to make the best of what you have at home. >> kids need to feel like the place where they're going to work is a serious place that they take seriously that they respect. >> reporter: parenting expert rachel simmons recommends letting your child decorate a designated workspace just like they may at school. >> another thing to do is to really think about how your

child learns best. if your child is a morning person, 4:00 in the afternoon isn't the best time to start with them on their schooling. >> reporter: and make sure kids get time with friends either in person or at least facetime. >> the bottom line is that we want to keep our kids feeling safe, feeling connected and feeling invested in their learning, and if we can do those three things, our kids will be very well off at a very difficult moment. >> reporter: rachel has another tip, she says parents cannot have the same strict expectations that we did before the pandemic. she says, loosen the reins and decide what the expectations will be before schools begin. dan. >> that's incredibly helpful. stephanie, thank you so much. let's get the forecast now, rob marciano out in norwalk, connecticut. hey, rob. >> good morning again, dan. i want to show you video of some new fires out in the west. we have been talking about california. colorado has had a few as well, and portions of i-70 shut

down for a time yesterday with this fire near glenwood springs, colorado, that's not far from aspen. some of the popular hiking trails have been shut down too because of the smoke. lake fire update, 17,000 acres burned. some evacuations lifted but they're obviously very close to some of the structures there and some of the homes. what we expect with this heat wave is potentially to be as bad as the one in 2006 for california. that is not good. we got red flag warnings up from the northwest to the southwest all the way in through texas and look at portland today, could see 102, 100 tomorrow. this is measured in the shade good saturday morning. here's the view from mt. tam. we can see a little bit of fog, increasing subtropical moisture today allowing for a little bit more cloud cover and a sea breeze kicking up today. but the heat wave continues through next wednesday. record breaking temperatures not

alum filled in for simon cowell on "america's got talent." the tweet, which has since deleted, references clarkson's recent divorce from husband brandon blackstock reading, now kelly is taking simon's place, no wonder her marriage didn't work. surprised she has time for her kids. not the good old country girl we fell in love with. >> kelly is the new host once again of the billboard music awards. she was the host last year and she also has a talk show. >> reporter: clarkson firing back, wow, shaming a woman who has a great work ethic, is a great mom and who steps up and fills in when a friend asks for a favor because that's actually what good old country girls do. this can't be who you are deep down. i have more faith in your heart. aim higher, please. ♪ and all i remember is you're back ♪ >> kelly is the child of a divorce, so she's really careful to be a good mom through all of this. >> and so the internet's response to clarkson's tweet was immense.

$3 week three, you'll have 1,300 bucks. how is that? >> baby steps is what you're saying. start small and work your way up. our next question is from eric in portland. he sent us this video. take a look. >> my wife and i were thinking of selling our home before the pandemic happened. now that the selling season is starting to slow down, should we wait until 2021, or do we still have time to put our home on the market? >> lynn, a lot of people asking the same question. >> yeah, well, right now home buying searches are up 950% on google, so if you're going to do it, move now. look at the trends in your area. get a market analysis, and then get to that house, declutter, remove things, get rid of the junk. get that home in move-in ready condition. you never know who is looking. >> all right. our next question here from brittany in minneapolis and, again, on video. >> money is tight for so many of us, and it doesn't look like it's getting any easier. what advice do you have about skipping credit card, mortgages and auto payments? >> lynn?

lose 65 pounds. >> amazing. wow. your story is so inspirational because a lot of people are struggling right now at home in quarantine. they're not eating the right way. but if they're looking for motivation now, what is your best advice for people out there to lose weight? >> so the biggest thing for me has been accountability. so at the beginning of the year i actually started a 12-week weight loss challenge, and it's helped keep me on track. i'm super competitive in nature, so that also helped, and i actually extended it another eight weeks, so ultimately after all this was done, i made a lifestyle change for myself, so it's been awesome. riding with a buddy or a group of people has really helped me, especially on those days that i haven't wanted to get up and get going, and i've actually been able to refer several people throughout this whole process, so that's been awesome. and i'd say secondly, find an
