and the possibility of more power outages across the bay area. hello. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. you are taking a live look right now at santa cruz beach, a popular spot, as temperatures soar into the triple digits in some cities. >> let's find out just how long this heat's going to be with us. i can confirm 106 where i live. here's meteorologist drew tuma. >> yes, it's another day of record-breaking heat as our dangerous heat wave rolls on. the official numbers just came in a few minutes ago. we had numerous cities set new records or tie old records. nine cities in fact from santa rosa to napa. redwood city to gilroy all seeing record heat today. 2 i sanow it's a very even a 98. it'san fransco. t next couple of hours, little in the way of relief from this heat. by 9:00 p.m. after the sun goes down we still have numerous 70s

to 80s across the bay area. and tomorrow morning it's a warm start to another very hot day. we'll have the latest on how hot we get tomorrow, how long this heat wave will last, and also a red flag warning that will go into effect. all the details in the acuweather forecast in a few minutes. >> we will see you then, drew, thank you. the heat is putting a serious strain on our state's power grid. cornell barnard joins us from the north bay. what do we know about the possibility of more power outages, cornell? >> reporter: well, eric,ges are possibility tonight through wednesday and customers should be prepared. well, it's super hot outside. there is relief, though, here at this new cooling center at the marin center in san rafael. take a look. there is water. there's lots of snacks. best of all, air-conditioning. and after last night with no power a lot of folks around here could really use it. >> we're going to survive it. >> reporter: richard evans was braving the heat on the vallejo

waterfront saturday, cooking up some tasty barbecue. >> it's going to be hot. i'm cooking. so i need a break every once in a while. dip into the shade. and usually no matter how hot it gets there's usually a breeze off the water. >> reporter: didi dominguez from fairfield found some shade and gave this advice. >> drink a lot of water. do your social distancing stuff. >> reporter: friday night several hundred thousand residents in the bay area lost power. california ordered rolling blackouts after the heat wave strained the state's electrical system. >> not only do we have heat but the heat wave brought in cloud cover in the desert areas where we have a lot of solar power plants. so that reduced our solar generation. and made our electricity supplies even tighter. >> we sweating right now out here. it's hot. >> reporter: darnell caffey had no water or power. power was out for about three hours.

>> it finally came back on. but hey, man, when it's 100-something degrees outside it ain't no joke. >> reporter: patty free nan, husband vernon and their dog cookie lost power in sebastopol when temperatures soared over 100 degrees. >> it was really a restless night. i was afraid power was going to go off again. and it was very, very hot. >> reporter: pg&e says more power outages are possible. the utility tweeted statewide heat wave continues, pg&e encourages customers to conserve energy through wednesday. rotating power outages possible saturday night from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. california's independent system operator told us this afternoon it's not anticipating any power emergencies today, but pg&e remains on standby. asking customers to be ready just in case. have flashlights ready, battery-operated lanterns, and keep your cell phone charged of course. by the way, this cool center in san rafael will be open every day thugy, 3:00 to

7:00 p.m., and come on down. we're live in san rafael, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> cornell, thank you very much. 50,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the oakland alameda estuary last night because of a power outage according to the east bay municipal utility district. the outage caused a failure at the main plant near the bay bridge. people are being told to avoid the water there for several days. >> it's a dilution issue really and we have to wait for a couple of days most likely. and we'll be testing the water. we'll be doing sampling along the estuary. and when the water is safe we will let the public know that they can go back in. >> east bay said it had no warning from pg&e that the power was being cut. pg&e has not commented. east bay mud said it's going to have to pay a fine for the spill. three teens have been rescued from san francisco's ocean beach within the last hour, and one is in critical

condition. abc 7 was at ocean beach this afternoon, where you can see plenty of people trying to beat the. san francisco firefighters tweeted they received a call saying three people in the water were distressed. when their crew arrived, they found one teen in need of immediate cpr. the boat even faced a riptide on the return trip and was forced to find a longer route to shore. meantime, power also went out in southern california. this is the simi valley just last night. the rolling blackouts lasted for about an hour for each outage group. parts of southern california are under an excessive heat warning through 9:00 p.m. wednesday. now, we do want to help you prepare for possible power outages. so you can head to our website, abc7news.com and click on the outage story there on our home page. there you'll find links to information on how you can get ready now for an upcoming outage. the abc 7 news i-team has learned about arrests linked to a scheme by san mateo county

jail inmates to obtain unemployment benefits intended for people affected by covid-19. sources tell the i-team that at least coty-owned computers to apply for benefits. some of those inmates face murder charges. the scam netted about $250,000. san mateo county sheriff's deputies and officers from other agencies arrested 21 people in three counties stretching from san francisco to the san joaquin valley. those suspects include girlfriends and friends of the suspected inmates. a man died this morning while being taken into custody by the sonoma county sheriff's office. deputies responded to a domestic violence call this morning and when they arrived at a home on river road a man and a woman walked out with the woman asking for help and the man holding her. escayim in handffs d he began ardimepeadly don't make us tase you. well, they tased him, and down he went. so he goes down but all that did

was aggravate him because the taser wasn't work. tom said stop resisting and he goes, "i will not stop." >> deputies eventually handcuffed the man and say that's when he had some kind of medical emergency and died. as part of abc 7's commitment to cover five major areas to help build a better bay area we now focus on health and the latest on the coronavirus pandemic. state health officials say there were more than 12,600 newly recorded confirmed cases on friday. that total is more than 4,000 cases higher than the previous day's number. the state says friday's total may include delayed test results. yesterday the governor said the state is caught up with its reporting of cases that were backlogged due to a data glitch. california reports 151 deaths, down 37 from the previous day. los angeles and riverside counties have the highest case countse. well, people out enjoying the weather in san francisco got a bit of free protection from covid-19. park rangers are giving a

face masks to people today at dolores park. rangers also handed out nearly 500 masks at the park yesterday. and they're making sure people are following the health order. protesters in the bay area today stood in solidarity with anti-government demonstrators in belarus. that nation's president also got a pledge of support with a neighboring country offering its help. that story coming up. and it now appears that one wildfire burning in california

drivers faced delays when a brush fire forced several lanes to close along a freeway in san francisco this afternoon. people saw smoke rising for miles away from the scene after the fire started along southbound u.s. 101. here is how it looked for drivers headed in the opposite direction. chp officers closed the three right lanes while firefighters attacked the flames. al lanes were reopened at about 2:45, 90 minutes after the fire started. developing news, a new round of evacuations have been ordered for the destructive lake fire burning north of los angeles. the wildfire has burned around 23 square miles. that's about the size of the city of palo alto. it's only 12% contained. extreme heat is fueling the

fire, which has destroyed at least 21 buildings and is threatening 25 ining 5,500 othe. the fremont and alameda fire departments have sent strike teams to help. investigators now say another wildfire burning in the angeles national forest was intentionally set. they've identified the suspect as osmin palencia who lived in a camp where the fire has started. he has not been arrestd and is considered violent. the fire started thursday afternoon and has consumed 2,500 acres. it is only 3% contained. in san francisco activists gathered to protest what they say is inhumane treatment of protesters in belarus. people held up signs at harry bridges plaza on the embarcadero this afternoon. ectn w riggedasy a m was during the demonstrations. many others were injured and thousands arrested. nw, this was a tribute held today in belarus's capital, where protesters later called

weekend but for the next several days this heat wave, it will continue. live doppler 7 along with satellite right now showing you some clouds to our south and east, but the majority of the bay area is seeing sun-filled skies. numbers right now we're coming off an afternoon that was record-breaking in terms of temperatures. nine cities tied or broke records earlier today. but it is still very hot out there. 103 in concord. we're at 90 in hayward. 98 redwoo city. 100 in santa rosa. even the coast. when half moon bay is in the 80s you know it's just an extremely warm day across the region. so it is for that fact we still have heat advisories and excessive heat warning still in effect for this evening. because of the hot temperatures there is the high risk of heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke. so remember to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in the shade if you have to be outdoors for long periods of time, and wear lightweight loose-fitting clothing if you have to be outside to stay cool

because we're not going to find much in the way of any relief overnight tonight. look at these numbers. as the sun goes down, the cooler weather's going to be very slow to move in here without the help of a marine layer. away from the coast you can see many warm cities in the 70s like 76 for the low in antioch. 72 in san jose. 70 in lakeport. even around the bay shoreline we'll stay in the mid and upper 60s overnight tonight. so here's live doppler 7 along with satellite. heat is one issue we are tracking. we are also tracking thunderstorms that have developed in southern california earlier today. and you can see the progression. they are rotating clockwise around an area of high pressure. and those thunderstorms are moving into northern california. and they do bring the risk of dry lightning overnight tonight. so it is for that fact we have a red flag warning that will go into effect at 11:00 p.m. tonight, and it's not for gusty winds. it's for the threat of dry lightning, potentially sparking new fires. that is a risk we will be

on abc 7 news at 11:00 tonight a south bay family has been without power for more than 24 hours. their food going to waste and their elderly neighbors getting anxious. their desperate plea to pg&e tonight. and she's lived through 20 presidents, two world wars, the spanish flu, and now covid. how the oldest person in the u.s. is celebrating her birthday this weekend. well, finally tonight, firefighters certainly have a lot to deal with when they are battling fires on the front line. and weather, rugged terrain, and the flames are just the least of it because how about this? a charging bull. >> no bull. there's a bull, actually, right there. ventura county fire department clearing a road as they battled
