the east bay, lighting up the oakland skyline and streaking across the south bay where it's blamed for sparking an apartment fire. >> it was intense, loud and unusual. >> yeah, you can say that again, eric. abc7 news drew joining us now. a wild weekend of weather is an understatement. >> yeah. what an intense way to start our sunday morning. before we woke up we had hundreds of lightning strikes across the bay area and they lasted for several hours. live doppler sufficient showing you much of the activity locally has calmed down but we are watching some thunderstorms that have developed in the sierra over the last couple of hours. why is all this happening right now? we have a couple of players in the atmosphere. high pressure in the desert southwest is bringing the heat. that is not uncommon for this time of year. what it is doing, there is a tropical storm well to our

south. it is applying a lot of moisture and sending it to northern california. when it interacts with the heat, it creates the thunderstorms and that will likely happen again overnight tonight. the red flag warning does continue until early tomorrow morning for the threat of more. we'll go hour by hour and show you the best chance of finding the storms tomorrow and the heat wave continuing. >> all right, thanks. now to developing news on all the problems caused by that severe storm. it knocked out power to thousands. but first to the fires including this one in san jose. fire crews say line started a fire at a six-unit apartment compx. one person was burned out but no one was hurt. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard where there was a grass fire. one has now grown to 300 acres.

>> a fierce summer storm packed a punch overnight bringing this. a nonstop line show to all parts of the bay area. amazing to see but firefighters say all that lightning combined with extreme heat sparked multiple fires. >> all six fires that we had this morning were all attributed to the lighting. >> those fires grew up into the deer zone fire. here's time lapsed video burning in the preserve near brentwood. brian bell and his family live on morgan territory road where residents are being urged to prepared to evacuate if needed. >> it is constantly a fire concern ty of dead vegetation. we do what we can to keep fire breaks around the property. >> reporter: in livermore, alameda fire county units worked to contain this fire in sycamore park likely sparked by line. the fire was stopped at 50 acres. cal fire said it responded to 11

fires. most were presumed to have started from lightning strikes. forward progress has been stopped on most of the fires. we're working the get more resources, stretched thin. contra costa firefighters need help, too. >> we need helicopters out here and everything right now, especially with what went on last in it and this morning, serving in short supply. >> in marin county, lime likely started this grass fire which came dangerously close to an apartment complex. ? we saw the line. the fire started right after that. and the wind and everything, it was a crazy, crazy combination of things. >> i grabbed everything i could and ran out. got out as quickly as possible. >> luckily everybody is there okay. here at the deer zone fire in contra costa county, firefighters expect to be here overnight. they hope to get more resources to fight this fomime tomorrow. abc7 news.

>> thank you very much. pg&e says customers in the bay area need to be prepared for rolling blackouts through wednesday evening. san mateo, and other areas could see outages tonight due to the heat wave still gripping much of california. california independent system operator has issued a flex alert asking people to conserve electricity today through wednesday from 3:00 in the afternoon through 10:00 in the evening. we spoke to pg&e to get a better explanation as to how the blackouts will work. >> this is a statewide issue, not just a pg&e issue. this is rotating blocks. like 200 to 250,000 customers at a time. but depending on how long the supply and demand challenge exists, it is multiple groups of 200 to 250,000. so one group will be out for an hour and then another group will be out for an hour, hour and a half. most will be relatively short. >> pg&e says the decision is squarely on cal iso and in some

instances, they're giving just a few minutes to cut the power. here's a look at the current power outages in the bay area. a spokesperson tells us there were several heat-related outages due to lightning. those labeled in yellow affect areas with 50,000 people with the largest outages are labeled in red. this morning a huge bolt of line was caught near the district train tower in concord. by the training coach, chris block. confire said they responded to several fires. they increased staffing during the storm. now, thunder, line and rain, you always check the forecast for where you live on our free abc7 news app. we'll send notifications on any power outages or breaking news. developing from american canyon where homicide investigators are looking for whoever shot and killed an 18-year-old safeway employee.

gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the supermarket on west american canyon road shortly after noon. the victim is identified as nathan gabriel garza. he lives in fairfield. the suspect escaped in a car. both the napa county sheriff and the police are investigating the killing. now to the coronavirus pandemic. the national number of covid-19 cases is going down while the latest concern involves students returning to college. abc news reporter kristine sloane has the latest. >> reporter: president trump mifk saying coronavirus cases are on the decline. >> nearly 85% of jurisdictions all across our country are reporting a very steep decline in cases. and that is despite the fact that we have the number one testing program anywhere in the world. we're up to almost 70 million tests, far beyond any other in the country. >> reporter: this as the cdc says more than 200,000 american lives could be lost by labor day. >> you can't run away from the numbers of people who died, the

number of people who are get go hospitalized, the surges. >> reporter: and many students returned to the classroom. more than a dozen students potentially exposed at this oklahoma high school after one of their classmates tested positive. but misunderstood quarantine rules and went to school anyway. at villanova university, police breaking up a large party. the school's president telling students, they'll believe sent home if they don't follow campus guidelines. while a spokesperson for the u.s. naval academy confirming, a number of midshipmen tested positive. the university of arizona testing students before they move in. those who are positive will be stone an isolation dorm for ten days. abc news, new york. grace cathedral in san francisco is holding a virtual memorial to honor people died from covid-19. it is the secretary time the cathedral has organized this since the onset of pandemic. ♪ hallelujah

developing news, house speaker nancy pelosi said she will call the house back into session this week so congress vote on a bill that would prohibit the u.s. postal service from changing its operators. the trump white house is trying to undermine the postal service as state's exhibit paneled their mail-in voting options. house democrats are expected to hold a conference call tomorrow. a vote may happen on saturday. neighbors have been allowed to return to their homes after a gas rupt you are in san bruno. it happened just a mile from the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. in this case, pg&e says a rupt

pg&e says there was no explosion. in the south bay, protesters rallied outside the santa clara main jail today in support of an ongoing hunger strike. a strike started friday in response to the death of george floyd. organizers of the protest are calling for changes to the county's justice system and greater oversight for the sheriff's office. the sheriff's office says they are working to address many of the concerns and in a statement, said, we take the health and welfare of our care seriously and we will work closely with custody health services regarding those who elect to participate. envelop things got a little wild today in the east bay. what do you think about the animals? >> awesome. >> awesome? >> as a stamp of approval, we'll take to you a zoo created

there were some wild encounters in the east bay today. there was a drive-through zoo in pleasanton billed as a safari adventure. visitors got to see a leemure, sloths and various reptiles from the comfort of their cars. families say it was good chance to get the kids out of the house. >> the little ones enjoy it. all kids love animals, right? they don't get to see these often. >> yeah. they're probably better seen from inside the car. tickets cost $thrive with the money going to help bay area wildlife groups. >> what a fun afternoon and day that must have been minus that it was probably pretty humid out there.

>> yeah. we've got a lot going on. now our heat wave rolls on. and even overnight, there is threat of more line moving into the bay area. live doppler 7 showing you any line we did have with thunderstorms earlier today. they have all moved out for the time being. certainly our skies have quieted down. as the cloud cover broke down, the sunshine came back. it is a hot day across the region. 90, the current temperature in san jose. knee, redwood city. 83 in oakland. you can see a little sea breeze. they are much cooler. a very humid day out there today. look at the dew points. they measure how many money is in the atmosphere. when those numbers climb to 60, where many of us are, it is

humid. earlier these numbers were above 70. it is almost air you can wear. they're typically in the 40s and low 50s. our heat wave rolls. on we have heat advisories rolling on. excessive heat warnings with that high related illness because of the hot temperatures we have and this does continue tomorrow as well. so again, overnight tonight. not much relief when it comes to any cool weather moving in. it is a pretty muggy night. low 60s if not mid 70s, our overnight lows for much of the bay area. there is the threat again for line moving in. we can see some moisture coming in from the south. because of the tropical storm interacting with the hot temperatures that could usher in more storms. so the future weather will stop the clock first thing tomorrow morning. 4:00 a.m. early in the morning

on monday. more showers and storms are likely to develop and they could contain line once again. and it looks like that window will continue through 8:00 a.m. i think the best chance to see more storms develop tomorrow morning is between 3:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. monday. so it is for that fact, our red nag warning does continue. we saw numerous fires starting early this morning because of the line strikes. and it is still there for more fires to start because of more line moving in tomorrow morning. so some line safety, nowhere outside is safe. remember, move indoors. lime can strike almost 12 miles away from a storm. another hot day tomorrow. 98 frt high in oakland. 98, san jose. 100 in santa rosa. so the accuweather seven-day forecast, we'll watch that a.m. storm threat tomorrow morning. the heat wave continues through at least wednesday before it begins slightly cooler air moving in. a good idea.
