round of lightning, fires across the region and looming threat of power outages. good evening, thanks for joining us, i'm dion lim. >> i'm eric thomas. right to busy abc7 meteorologist drew tuma with heat and lightning. >> ingredients still in place to see more lightning next 12 hours. was active earlier this morning. we saw the lightning and heard the rumbles of thunder for many hours. what we're watching now through the same pipeline is another round of moisture off the coastline. live doppler 7 along with satellite there, roughly 550 miles away from the bay area. but this moisture as it moves north and interacts with the very warm temperatures we have now at night, does have the potential to again produce thunders. future weather, hour by hour, before sunrise tomorrow, 5:00

a.m. to 7:00 a.m., best chance to again see more lightning move through the bay area. for that fact, red flag warning is still in effect for entire region for the risk tomorrow of lightning strikes to start new fires. seen numerous fires earlier this morning. threat is still real next 12 hours. not only fire and lightning threat but in midst of a dangerous heat wave. we'll have all the details in full accuweather forecast in a few minutes, guys. to the latest on the fires burning around the bay area. mandatory evacuation orders issued for people near cluster of wildfires in eastern contra costa tonight. deer complex fires burned 400 acres near mount diablo. four different fires in the area. and marsh creek road residents

under new evacuation orders because the fire has unexpectedly shifted directions. south of marsh creek in brentwood also under mandatory orders to leave. community center and safeway parking lot in clayton are centers. >> constant fire concern out here, plenty of dead vegetation. do what we can to keep fire breaks around the property. >> firefighters say incredible lightning storm and extreme heat likely touched off the fires. ri ntghow containment is 0%. trio of fires east of milpitas, mandatory evacuation orders for ten homes on welch road. 0% containment at this point. mandatory evacuations for a wildfire sparked by lightning east of salinas.

2,000 acre river fire started this afternoon and grew quickly. flames jumped pine canyon this evening. middle school evacuation center in salinas. firefighters were inundated with calls for fires caused by downed wires. worked to contain this vegetation fire in sycamore park. lightning started this fast-moving grass fire that came dangerously close to apartment complex. >> saw the lightning and fire started right after this. wind, a crazy combination of things. >> cal fire said earlier it responded to 11 fires since 1:00 a.m. in santa cruz and san mateo county, most presumed to have started from lightning strikes. if fires weren't enough, pg&e says customers need to be

prepared for rolling blackouts through wednesday evening. customers in san francisco, san mateo and contra costa countys were told to expect outages tonight but warning wasn't necessary. heat wave has people blasting air conditioners and fans. issued alert asking people to conserve 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. spoke to pg&e this afternoon how the blackouts would work. >> it's statewide, not just bay area or pg&e issue. it's rotating blocks. 200,000 to 250,000 customers at a time. but depending how long, it's multiple groups. one group out for hour, another hour, hour and a half, most

relatively short. >> decision is on cal iso and some instances, given just a few minutes to shut down the poufrmt this is the outage map. many outages this weekend have been heat related. labeled yellow or orange, affecting most people. outages started friday evening and by tonight, many have had it. for some it's a matter of life and death. lauren martinez live in south san francisco with more. lauren. >> reporter: dion, we spoke to people who are not only losing food in refrigerator but having to make serious and costly decisions. bay area residents were warned they could lose power sunday evening in one of pg&e's rolling blackouts which has some concerned.

county community. 18-year-old safeway employee was shot and killed, store off american canyon road. luz pena was there. >> we're getting multiple callers, three shots heard in the parking lot. there's a subject down on the ground. >> reporter: on the ground, 18-year-old safeway employee, nathan garza. delivering groceries to a customer in the parking lot. >> it's very wild for the area. nice community. >> reporter: took place around noon, investigators asking witnesses and customers to report any information about the suspect who got away. >> never heard of anything like this here, kids go to school here, everything. nothing. this is really shocking. >> reporter: tonight american canyon's mayor garcia confirming this is unprecedented in this

"san francisco chronicle" insider and abc news contributor is reporting that 23 sworn officers have resigned, 19 took jobs at other law enforcement agencies. officers gave many reasons for leaving, including the high cost of living. others are frustrated by expected budget cuts, calls for pay freezes and more defunding. read phil in the "chronicle" every sunday and tuesday. more than 620,000 people have tested positive, 78 hnz more than yesterday, 77

additional deaths due to coronavirus. tomorrow the governor says he'll break down the number of cases per county, tell us which counties remain on the watch list and which can come off. it's been frozen since a data glitch was discovered july 25th. turning to the weather, drew, a wild weekend and busy few days. >> heat wave continues another day tomorrow with excessive heat warnings and advisories still in effect and lightning coming in next couple of hours. live doppler 7 was busy this ac ofrng in lightning strikes movi through the bay area. right now it's quiet but widen out the picture and add on satellite, there's a cluster of storms, moisture moving from the south that will move into northern california likely around sunrise tomorrow morning.

that's our next chance to interact with the warm weather we have to bring more lightning strikes in the bay area. temperature-wise, another mild night on tap. 83 in concord, 75 in san jose, 82 in cloverdale. gilroy is warm 81 degrees. and you felt the humidity throughout the day. especially earlier this morning. dew point measures how much moisture is in the atmosphere, when they climb above 60 it's humid. that's what we have in a lot of cities right now. we have a lot of moisture in atmosphere that could also aid in creating thunderstorms early tomorrow morning. dangerous heat wave upon us. advisory still in effect, excessive heat warnings still in effect for tomorrow. risk of heat-related illness remains high. again a warm night. 60s to mid and upper 70s next 12 hours, and really what we're

watching closely is the threat for more lightning. future weather. hour by hour, looks like storms will approach 3:00 to 4:00 a.m. off the coastline. 5:00 a.m. expect some development in storms. with the latest guidance, 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, storms likely develop mainly in the north bay. they can shift north and south a little bit but north bay has best chance of seeing lightning in their neighborhoods. remember lightning safety, nowhere outside is safe when thunderstorm moves through. move indoors or into a car outside. lightning can strike as much as 12 miles from a storm. wait 30 minutes after the storm moves through before it's safe to go outside. red flag warning still in effect for threat of more lightning to create new fires. that will last until 11:00 a.m.
