it'spaun. the massive hennessey fire growing in size, prompting evacuations. >> rotating power outages did not happen here in the bay area tonight, but some are still very upset. the stifling heatwave continues. find out when we'll finally get a break, coming up. the san jose teacher now on administrative leave for appearing shirtless sends an email to his students. tonight parents demand answers and actions from the school district. abc7 news starts right now. >> now from abc7, live breaking news. >> and that breaking news is in napa county where hundreds of firefighters are battling a wildfire in wine country. >> the hennessey fire this morning exploded this afternoon. it's burning to the east of st. helena and rutherford, and has grown to 2400 acres with zero containment. >> evacuations are in effect in that area, but some homeowners

are choosing to stay. cornell bernard is in napa county tonight. >> reporter: a fast-moving wildfire in wine country, igniting acres of dry brush in the hills above st. helenhelena. sky 7 was over the hennessey fire late monday as the blaze exploded in size, burning through rugged terrain. cal fire attacking the fire from all sides, including precise air drops of flame retardant. hundreds of firefighters staging near hennessey ridge road. this fire possibly started by lightning strikes. monday's weather certainly didn't help firefighters. >> when you have these hot conditions, it's not favorable for fighting fire. and then with the little storm fronts we had coming in throughout the day, that brings a little wind in the front of those which gets fire pretty active. >> we know the fire son our property and it's moving towards us. >> reporter: mandatory evacuations have been ordered in the area, but jeff is staying,

ready to save the winery that's been in his family for 130 years. >> we're a little winery, but we have a big family, and there are about a half dozen of my cousins around right now, and we're kind of at the ready if the fire gets a little closer. we have the hoses out and ready to make a stand. >> reporter: right now the fire is burning at the top of this ridge. lots of smoke here. it is too close for comfort for the folks who live in this >> i and my property. >> reporter: phillips is watching the fire creep over the ridge near his home. he's got a sprinkler system wetting down the roof. >> we're going to stay here as long as we can. it gets unsafe, we've leave and leave the sprinklers run and hope for the best. >> reporter: several hundred homes are threatened. firefighters doing all they can to save all of them. in na coty cornell bernard, abc7 news. another wildfire is raging tonight in napa county. the gamble fire remaining out of control near berryessa knoxville

road. cash crike casino is just to the south. abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the current conditions for firefighters tonight. >> and the heat that is just blanketing the bay area, it is so extreme. sandhya? >> yeah, dan and ama, and the heat is not going away, tleegs not tomorrow. here is good news. near the hennessey, it is 83 degrees. the relative humidity has come up, 49% and the winds are light. hopefully the crews can make progress during the nighttime hours. tomorrow as you look at the temperatures, they soar, in the extreme category. 104 degrees near that fire. although we are expecting a brief cooldown here wednesday, thursday. there is going to be heat building again as we head into the weekend. we do have the dangerous heatwave continuing. excessive heat warnings in effect for all areas other than the coast, and there is a heat advisory for lake and mendocino counties. so this hot weather continues.

how hot today? believe it or not, those temperatures came down today. well still had triple digits with humid conditions inland in livermore, fairfield along the coast. 70s and 80s. live doppler 7 is quiet right now. but some of those fires were sparked by thunderstorms. i'll let you know if there is any other chances coming up. ama? >> all right, sandhya, thank you. that lightning sparked a number of fires yesterday including the river fire. mandatory evacuations are in effect for areas south of salinas. the fire has damaged at least five buildings. cal fire says four firefighters suffered heat-related injuries. flames have charred 2800 acre, and the fire is 10% contained. in the east bay, four fires burning near alameda and santa clara counties make up the marsh fire. fire crews say air drops help beat back the flames today, and mandatory evacuations in the kilcare canyon area have been revised to a warning. mandatory evacuation orders are in effect for ten homes on welch creek road.

nearly 1800 acres have burned with zero containment. a cluster of fires in far eastern contra costa make up the deer zone fire. 1,450 acres southwest of brentwood near deer valley road. evacuation orders are in place. there is no containment. >> well, this heat has meant a lot of electricity use, but cal iso lifted stage 2 emergency declaration saying conservation helped the power grid tonight. take a look. the turquoise line shows the demand today. the peak usage hit 45,169 megawatts. right now it's at about 35,000 megawatts. meanwhile, the statewide flex alert expired at 10:00 tonight, one hour ago. it will go into effect again tomorrow and wednesday from 3:00 p.m., and again stretch until 10:00 at night. state grid operators say they are pleading with the public to lower our usage. >> i know that it's going to be highly disruptive to people, and i truly, truly wish that there were other options.

in our case, supply and demand always have to be equal. when there is more demand than supply, you can eventually crash the system if you don't take steps which is what our operators are doing. >> to do your part to save energy, set your air conditioning to 78 degrees. turn off unnecessary lights and avoid using major appliances from 3:00 in the afternoon until 10:00 in the evening. the rotating blackouts didn't happen tonight, but there were still a loft outages for a number of other reasons. jr stone is live in the newsroom. jr, some people just got their electricity tonight after being without it all weekend? >> yes. we're talking about people who didn't have it for 60 hours. more than 60 hours but tonight they did not have to issue statewide blackouts for two reasons. temperatures cooled and people conserved. >> it's just ridiculous that we're already stuck in our house. and now what are we supposed to

do? >> reporter: monday fears of more rotating power outages grew across california and here in alameda where cynthia zurnic lives. uses a sleep apnea machine and says there is no excuse for enduring outages like thinking and it's hot and the air conditioning goes off and we're stuck here with five kids, not having anything to do. >> reporter: the state called off the rotating outages late monday, saying temperatures stayed cooler than they had been, and people conserved. the governor even taking blame for energy shortages during his monday press conferences. >> we failed to predict and plan these shortages, and that's simply unacceptable. >> mariana serrato of san jose says what she had to endure this week was terrible. she lost electricity friday during the rotating outages. it came back saturday. and then 30 minutes later, it was out. pg&e couldn't talk to the specific case, but says the extended blackout was not due to

rotating outages, putting the blame on the weekend weather. >> the only thing that we would get is that map that said pg&e is assessing the problem. well, stop assessing and start fixing it. >> reporter: garcia serrato got her electricity back on noon monday, and now doesn't know what to expect. >> in the next few days, and actually any time soon simply because i -- i don't trust that the power will come back on. >> and that woman you saw there lost her power for more than 60 hours. now this flex alert is in effect for tuesday and wednesday. so it's possible we could see rotating power outages on either tuesday or wednesday night. the governor did sign an emergency proclamation monday, allowing energy reserves to be used. jr stone, abc7 news. >> all right, jr, thank you. in the san jose, sam liccardo is pushing back after pg&e said the shutoffs have

cabral, identified in these shirtless photos taken during a special education math class friday. he was put on paid administrative leave. >> it doesn't state why he is leaving. it doesn't state oh, i'm sorry for my actions. he doesn't say anything. he very vague. >> reporter: about a brcabral'ss it looks like i will not be teaching you for an indefinite period. i hope to resume as soon as possible. >> he was suspended, shouldn't his access to these kids be terminated as well? what are his intentions now? >> reporter: we tried cabral's email monday. delivery failed. a prompt reading the address couldn't be found or is unable to receive mail. after our original story aired, we heard from a parent. rachel garza says she called over her 13-year-old daughter. is that your teacher and she said yes. he didn't have a shirt on yesterday in your class? and she stopped and she said no. and i'm like why didn't you tell me? you have to tell me these

things. that's important. >> reporter: she searched for a note from the district explaining the incident. >> instead, we opened my daughter's email and got an email from him. >> reporter: we reached out to the district, superintendent chris funk writing back he is not to be in contact with any of his students. there was a timing issue on friday issuing his notice. i will not be commenting any further during this investigation. both mothers wanting answers and action. >> there is probably parents going on their whole weekend, not even realizing that their children were involved and affected by something like this. >> reporter: another teacher is expected to lead the class on tuesday. i'm amanda del castillo, abc7 news. in the north bay, an 18-year-old shot and killed in american canyon is remembered as a kind hearted baseball player who dreamed of going pro.ie ton during a vigil for nathan garza who was shot and killed yesterday at the parking lot of a safeway where he worked. earlier his mother spoke with abc7 news. >> he was the youngest. he had six older sister, and he

was our only boy. and he filled the room. he filled our life. >> the napa county sheriff's office says it has arrested christopher roly young from martinez for the shooting. let's turn now to the coronavirus pandemic where for the first time in two weeks we saw movement on the county watch list. counties that land on it have to roll become reopenings and schools cannot reopen until a county is off the list for 14 days. >> we go from 38 counties to now 42 counties. >> reporter: california finally lifting the freeze on its county watch list, now that the backlog of tests has been cleared. it added five, including mendocino county, but took one off, a county just south of the bay area can think about reopening businesses once again. >> santa cruz on friday was removed from the list. >> reporter: the list may see another county drop off in the coming days. another 6400 coronavirus cases were reported today.

that's well below the seven-day average that had spiked the state processed hundreds of thousands of tests held up by a technical problem. the 14-day positivity rate is now at 6.5%, and hospitalizations dropped below 5,000. >> those case numbers are high, but they are trending in the right direction. >> they be trending in the right direction, but california, keep in mind, still has the most coronavirus cases in the nation at more than 628,000. new at 11:00, several people have tested positive following the most recent san francisco police academy graduation. first a class member tested positive on friday. and then members of the staff. more tests have come back positive since then, and those who are infected are self-quarantining. there are two other academy classes in session. they have been tested. so far no positive test there's. in the east bay, a show of defiance by salons that opened today despite state and county orders to remain closed. a number of salons opened their doors, but didn't offer

services. many salons have been shut down since march and said they're nearing financial collapse. rewaxation reopened for business. >> it was a matter of reopening against state orders or losing our businesses and our employees having to find jobs elsewhere. it came down to a matter of just surviving. >> some salons say they intend to stay open all week. on our website, we keep a running tally of counties that are on the state's watch list. we've even made an interactive map so you can look at individual counties and see how long they've been on the list. you'll find it on abc7news.com. new developments. all csu students will now be required to take an ethnic studies course. governor newsom signed the bill into law today. student vass to take at least one three-unit class in native american, african american, asian american, or latino studies. this new requirement goes into effect for students graduating in the 2024-'25 school year. all right.

let's return to the blistering heat, ama, and when it might end. >> yeah, if it's ever going to end. meteorologist sandhya patel is there with that answer for us. sandhya? >> we will see brief. typically the heatwaves in the bay area last three days and break. this time around it has been an extended period of hot weather. from our emeryville camera, a combination of the smoke and the haze created this sunset. 7:59, it was absolutely gorgeous, but obviously we're paying a price with the fires that are burning right now from those thunderstorms. air quality sim packed. so it was smoke, air quality advisory for smoke from the wildfires. will continue to impact us tomorrow. moderate air quality for all parts of the bay area. now a look at live doppler 7. patiently the computer is stalled. there we go. live doppler 7 showing you the thunderstorms that rolled across the bay area, earlier lake and

mendocino. this is all in association with an area of high pressure. the moisture just wrapping around this area of high pressure and getting pulled up. so we had leftovers from tropical storm fausto that got drawn in along with the intense heat. and that's why we saw the active weather. dew points are up there still because of that tropical moisture, in the low 60s. that's uncomfortable for us. 61 in hayward. temperatures across the region right now are cooled off nicely along the coast. and around parts of the bay, thanks to a breeze. but inland areas, you're still in the 80s. here is a live look from our bay hills camera, looking back towards san francisco. and visibility is terrific. dangerous heat the next two days. relief arrives on thursday, and then a warmer pattern is setting up again this weekend. hour-by-hour forecast, 8:00 tomorrow morning, it's going to warm up quickly inland, 70s, 80s, by lunchtime. we're talking 90s away from the coast. this is really going to end up

new developments with gap. the san francisco company is closing its main store on market and powell stores in union square because of the coronavirus pandemic. that's according to the chronicle. this brings the total to three with the stores at embarcadero center and stone's town galleria also closing for good. the only gap store still open in city on chestnut street. a dim sum institution in san francisco is closing. after 42 years ton kiang in the richmond district will close on august 31st. the owner says he was thinking of retiring and the pandemic sped up the timeline. his parents opened the first ton kiang in 1978. it is currently offering food to go. but closing its doors sadly in a couple of weeks after a very long run. all right. let's turn things over, talk a little sports, ama. >> yes. larry is here with that. larry? >> giants and the a's both had games end in walkoffs.
