pescadero. fire erupts in san mateo county. look at the walls of flames burning out of control. this fire was sparked by line on sunday and it has just exploded today. firefighters are making a stand, as you can see. a wide shot from sky 7. a plume of smoke. this is live. right now, residents are on stand by ready to evacuate. thanks for joining us. i'm larry biel. >> and i'm kristen sze. evacuat right now in napa county due to the hen see fire. that fire has burned to 2,700 acres. it is 0% contained. wayne is following the fire, he was there yesterday, back again today. what's the latest up there? >> this is the day that began with hope the fire had not grown much overnight. we're saying 2,700 acres but it

is much larger. you can see it over my shoulder. the hen see fire is moving. it didn't have air support today. those resources had to go to other areas that need the help even more. first came the smoke. then a few licks of flames. then they served notice. after a quiet note, this would be a day for moving and moving fast. neil and his wife kathleen knew all about that firsthand. >> looked down at the window and there's a small area of fire. it was rapidly increasing in size. >> they live a few yards from the lightning strike that started all this. >> it was thunder and lightning all evening. it really got loud. >> what had been one fire yesterday became three this morning. with the gamble fire and now the 15-5. >> yesterday toward the end of

the day, 15-5 and gamble were a couple hundred acres. overnight they yue to 4,500 and 5,000, respectively. >> from 60 known line strikes yesterday. >> there are all little spots, smoking up there. even some trees in the crotch at the bottom where they come out of ground. there are little flames there. >> reporter: little flames that with a puff of wind can turn into big ones. one big complication. no air support to fight the flames. it was all diverted. the fires burned to the wild lands unabated. what had been a line of flames barreled down the mountain. for a while they threatened but never did cut off highway 128. firefighters could do little more than watch and monitor. and that just one small drama among many today in a state that feels inundated by flames. >> a few moments ago, we mentioned the evacuation orders.

let me give you the information less than an hour ago. in the community of circle oaks, to wooden valley road. in theate las peak area from bubbly wells pet cemetery and from loma vista road. all those areas now under mandatory evacuations as the fires continue to move. wayne freedman. abc7 news. now tom breaking news in san mateo county. near la honda and sam mcdonald park are closed because of the flames. an evacuation warning has been issued, meaning people may have to flee their homes at any moment. luz pena is live on the scene there. luz in. >> reporter: yeah. we've spoken to several residents who are now packing up

and gearing up to evacuate. you can see the flames raging right behind us. the white smoke expanding through the ridge. you can see flames raging as they approach a community of 200 to 300 people. we're flying over the fire. you can see the flames and pagd throughout the area. cal fire confirmed, this fire is directly imtwo major communities. loma mar. it is presumed it started sunday morning. firefighters responded to 22 fires throughout this region. many residents have been documenting the size of the blaze since sunday. here's one of the residents, thomas marks. >> judging by that, at least twice from last night, a little more than that. and that is substantially larger.

>> reporter: 60 homes, their power went out around 2:30 a.m. on sunday and they just got it back around 2:15 today. this community is pretty tight knit. they've been communicating through radio. they're trying to stay connected and tell each other to evacuate. they're not feeling safe around here. we spoke to several who had their kids in their cars gearing up to get out of the area. luz pena. abc7 news. >> thank you so much. we're just looking at all that smoke rising behind you. air quality already bad with spare the air. let's check in with spencer christian and take clos mentio increase in particulate matter because of the extended heat wave. we had a spare the air today and now we have it extended until tomorrow because we have the smoke from the fires. so we expect the air quality in the inland east bay and the

santa clara valley. that could change with more smoke billowing into the atmosphere. let's get a look at the conditions. our computers have been a little slow. you can see in the area of the fire near la honda, dangerously low, the wind is generally light there. even though it is up to six-miles-per-hour. the smoke is basically lifting directly upward. meanwhile, in the north bay, those two fires, relative humidity, 23% with 11-mile-per-hour gusts so the winds there is a little stronger. also stronger gusts in the fire, near st. helena with gusts to 17 miles an hour. even with the resultly brisk wind breezes around the bay area. i'll give you a look at surface winds. it is quite breezy generally. the winds is coming out of various directions. breezy and variable. the smoke is going to continue to lift into the area and drag

the air quality down so long as those fires are burning. i'll have more later. >> all right. thank you. evacuation orders remain in place for the deer zone fire on the east side in contra costa county. it is one of several fires sparked. people who live along marsh creek have been told to leave. this fire has burned more than 1,400 acres. the river fire has grown to more than 4,000 acres. six buildings have been destroyed and evacuation orders are still in effect. four firefighters have been hurt. the injuries are due to the intense heat wave that has been gripping california. cal fire said lightning sparked sunday morning. it is 10% contained. now to coronavirus and our effort to build a better bay area and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. obviously a huge issue today. dr. anthony fauci, the face of the federal government's virus response team, gave an update

community leaders in san francisco's china town expressing concern over a report in spike in covid-19 cases at single room occupancy buildings there. >> from june 3 into august 13th, we increased more than ten times. so if you follow this theory in the future, we don't know. we are looking at this. the numbers come following an investigation of the single room occupancy groups by a local chinese newspaper. leaders are calling on the city to provide more funning and engagement with the community to help battle the virus. we've reached out to the health department but have yet to hear back. each us have had to cope with the pandemic in our own way. part of our focus building a better bay area, david louie outlines who is coping well and

the race to save the postal service is sweeping the nation. leaders from all over the country held events today and it seems their rally worked. the usps has reversed course saying it will back down all potential changes until after election day. abc7 news reporter chris reyes has the story. >> today we're having a day of action.

perk up. >> michael finney is here to talk more about the refunds. >> this is really a restitution to about 4,000, 4,500 small businesses being ripped off. the federal trade commission is the one sending out the checks. this is very good news. they said telemarketers called small businesses, claiming to be on behalf of google. the business would be delisted if a field is not paid. now the businesses will receive about $160 each in restitution. we've been spending more money on our homes during the pandemic. . of that on do it yourself projects. homes at home depot stores were up 25% with the company racking in more than $38 billion last quarter. that's nearly $8 billion more than the same quarter last year. now, some of that money certainly came from those
