containment tonight. >> some evacuations have been ordered. we have a complete list on our website abc7news.com. we'll begin our team coverage tonight with abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard who's in napa county. >> reporter: intense flames burning through dry brush in the hills above saint helena ploeks edding in size overnight. this is the hennessy fire, one of three big fires burning in napa county likely caused by lightening strikes. >> we're all packed out and ready to head out of here. >> reporter: workers were hosing down roofs at the treatment plant near lake hennessy. >> it looks like the winds have picked up which is never a good thing beingw. that's not a good thing either. >> reporter: neighbors say this home was destroyed by fire. the family living here had evacuated. almost 2,000 homes remain under

threat. firefighters scored a huge victory today. this historic family winery was saved. >> i think it's a miracle. >> reporter: phil is thanking cal fire crews and his cousins with water hoses for saving his family's winery. look how close the fire got to one of california's oldest winery built in 1980. >> this redwood could survive this kind of fire when everything else is total destruction. >> reporter: firefighters say they need more resources to fight these fires which pose so many challenges. >> biggest challenge is terrain, accessibility getting crews into those areas to fight that fire, really steep, rugged terrain, a lot of thick brush. fire consuming a lots of that thick vegetation in there. >> reporter: the fire fight starts again wednesday morning. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> the 13-4 fire has forced numerous evacuations tonight in

northwest sonoma county. it's burning west of healdsburg near the austin creek state recreation these schools have been canceled tomorrow. this video was taken late this afternoon. you can see the column of smoke just billowing into the sky. it was so thick the sun there looked more like a glowing red doan abc 7 news vie wert. in windsor took these pictures of the fire to the east of where it's burning. people there are preparing to evacuate. we spoke to cal fire just about 30 minutes ago. it's encouraging people to follow orders. >> residents in the vacation order area we hope you heed the warnings and move out of the area especially in a lot of si roads. we need those individuals evacuated out of the area so our firefighters can move in and out easily and not haveor to about traffic. >> cal fire says the 13-4 fire has burned at least 500 acres

and there is no containment. new evacuations issued tonight meantime in a series of wildfires burning the peninsula and south bay areas. cal fire grouped together the fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties. there are both evacuation orders and warnings in both counties in place. and tonight the fire really dramatically jumped in size. jr stone is live in san mateo county with the latest there. >> reporter: dan, tonight i can actually smell that smoke and that's much different because i couldn't smell it earlier. also the wind has picked up tremendously in the last hour or so. big time concerns out here in the la honda area. i know it is dark out here but we're going to do our best so you can see some of that glow up in the air on the skyline ridge, open space preserve. the glow of a fire that is still

burping in the hills of san mateo county and is now on the way to burn santa cruz county. >> it's unbelievable to see how fast moving this is. >> reporter: winds are not very strong but that's not stopped this august lightening complex fire from burning at least 7,500 acres, injuring at least two people and threatening at least 1,200 structures. >> flames, fireballs against the dark sky, and that was when i said, okay, that's -- i'm not comfortable in that. because it's onlyeik l 3 miles away. >> reporter: that was monday evening. don and debra borne then packed up the pets and left tuesday night. cal fire says this fire started early sunday morning. residents are furious that air support didn't come until tuesday. >> you know what? it's cal fire's job to manage the fires in california, isn't it? >> this could have been saved. it's very shameful to know that the leadership and management was so poor. >> we are the sixth largest

economy on the planet. come on. >> reporter: many didn't realize how big the fire had grown until they arrived home evening. >> just a little bit smoke over there. >> the winds changed. i mean look at it. >> reporter: now just a hope that the hundreds of firefighters will soon get the upper hand. >> so unworldly. you'd never think you'd be in this sort of a strange situation. >> reporter: and backut tried t there but it is dark. it's hard for our camera to pick up, but that orange glow can be seen if you're actually standing out here and looking into the distance. the glow coming from the other side of the hilltops. and we saw a lot of flames on this side of the hilltop so obviously this fire is moving, and now 7,500 acres in size with no containment. jr stone, abc 7 news. >> yeah, frightening.

j.r., thank you very much. very eerie pictures. all the fires are sending smoke and ash drifting across the bay area. that's affecting air quality. here's a live look at the website purpleair.com which monitors particulate matter in the air. you can see the worst is currently along the peninsula in la honda where j.r. was reporting live. ls say the air quality isn't impacted affof now. meteorologist sandhya patel is tracking the smoke and fire and weather conditions. she joins us now with more. sand hu? >> yeah, dan and

and homophobic rapt caught on camera. the melt down happened at a marshals in campbell when one man refused to wear a mask. even more surprising the man behind the tirade is known for his work with the lgbtq community. you're looking at the first of several homophobic slurs and racist language caught on camera. this confrontation happened inside this marshalls in campbell on monday. witnesses say employees had asked the man to put on a mask or. that's when the man challenged workers saying doing so would be a health code violation. beyond offensive language the man is also captured unzipping his pants. >> what's your name? what's your name? >> reporter: a primary concern according to captain ian white with campbell pd.

the virus is state is already looking ahead to flu season. and top health officer is urging parents to get their children vaccinated. >> we don't feel like we're moving in the wrong direction. >> dr. mark was a ray, ray, ray, counties come off and he points to the bigger picture. cases dropped with more than 4,600 reported today. hospitalizations did goe up slightly. >> overall the state picture is coming down and stabilizing some. >> reporter: also looking huhead to the fall and the potential we could be dealing with more than just the pandemic. >> this year together flu and covid make us particularly worried. >> he's encouraging people to get vaccinated. california running at two thirds of the vaccination level right now compared to the same time in 2019. >> we want to make sure that kids are protected against

common childhood illnesses and vaccine preventable illnesses. >> and he's also echoing what governor newsom is saying and said on monday. the state has cleared its backlog of nearly 300,000 tests. muny is going to be expanding service starting on saturday, restoring service on some bus lines while adding to others. the biggest change will be the return of muny metro. some of the light rail routes are being altered to avoid causing congestion in tunnels. the hours will be similar to bart's. good evening, everyone. take a look at the time lapse from our mount tam cam. you know that the smoky skies have been pretty thick across parts of the bay area. this is time lapse capturing just how bad the smoke layers were as we were getting closer to sunset. you can see just how heavy, how thick. it has impacted our air quality. as a matter of fact, it is the

worst around the peninsula. i want to show you a satellite picture of the smoke. as you will notice these are the fires gnat are in the north bay that have urning, puttg out a lot of smoke. hard to see the one near point ridge because of all the high clouds overhead. we're going to continue to see the impacts from the smoke. here's a look at the forecast. tomorrow morning the smoke settles a little bit and tomorrow afternoon you start to see the wind will beus our south and east. and winds will begin to pick up. the sea breeze will begin to push some of that smoke out of the area. it will not completely disperse but will get better towards the end of tomorrow. air quality will be impacted as a result of the wildfire smoke. as a result a poor air quality alert is in effect.
